Jimmy Gnecco interview podcast 8/17/19

I haven't listened to all of this yet (people talking at my work makes it hard, so I often pause frequently, sometimes for a long duration of time).

But there's a lot of good, brutally honest information and opinions Jimmy tells about.

He talks about why he's not on Social Media and why he remains quiet given the way the Music Industry is, and has been for a decade or more really.

Very similar to the approach Daniel Victor and Neverending White Lights have been.

And he reitrates how he wrote some 200 Songs over the course of the last decade or more, and with New Age Heroine II, Spectacular Sight III and several other projects/albums yet to be released, only like 40% of those will be recorded and released.

I don't have the time to spill my guts about how I feel about this, but just to say why I have been a loyal fan and lover of his music and way of doing things.

Those songs will all hopefully be released down the road, and the new single this Friday along with Spectacular Sight III are to be incredibly excited about.

But it just goes back to how much music there is from this man to be heard, and it frankly shouldn't matter if NOBODY EVERY CATCHES ON. WHICH IS BAFFLING AND PATHETIC, BUT KEEP BEATING THAT DEAD HORSE AND EVENTUALLY SOMETHING MAY CHANGE.

IN THE MEAN TIME, THE MUSIC IS GOING TO BE THERE FOR US FANS WHO DO GET IT (ALREADY).

Daniel Victor interview (Neverending White Lights) on the Audio Judo Podcast

This is a new interview that Daniel Victor did with the Audio Judo podcast.

It's a little over an hour.

Very good interview and good to hear Daniel talk about things with Neverending White Lights, the current status, some of the history, etc.

I really love a lot of NWL music, and totally support Daniel with whatever he does musically.

He's a very talented songwriter who is very ambitious and unique.

The stuff to take from this interview being that he's written and demo-ed music for a large sum of songs. He said Act IV for the 3rd incarnation, is all written, and he's written enough other songs for half of Act V.

He of course is staying with the NWL approach to having different singers for different songs. Although if I recall correctly, at one point for Act III or it may have been just after, he said he may not always do that. I wonder if a lot of that was due to time, or he found he wrote many songs that the other singers were not required, aka he would sing on them only, or maybe they would be instrumental tunes? i forget, that was many years ago of course.

I feel his frustration and experience about the Music Industry, label, and success being found and then not found with a follow-up.

And the gap in years since Act III being 8 years, as a fan, I both feel the frustration with him, but also only want what is best. The music to be released in the best way possible.

Because he says if things with the Music industry and label didn't go the way they did, he likely would have released 3 or 4 more albums this decade. He had like 100 songs written.

he also repeated what I remembered with the 1st incarnation of Act IV being lost due his place being flooded and the hard drive with it being lost. I suppose his feeling of that it wasn't meant to be makes sense, but the NWL fan in me likely will always wonder about that music.

But Act IV will come at some point hopefully. It does remind me a bit of what happened with Close to Edge from Yes.

But he does say towards the end of the interview, how Acts I and II will be added to Spotify soon and his website and albums will be revamped, maybe also on bandcamp? they are there anyway.

And likely in 2020, he'll at least be releasing a new song. As far as Act IV? maybe it's worth not assuming any time frame. I wonder if part of it is having the singers come on board. He mentioned Matthew Good whose a fellow Canadian musician whose friends with Daniel. I know him, liked some of his music from memory.

I can't help but wonder if some of the others could include Jeff Martin from The Tea Party and Dan Moxon of Bend Sinister. He mentioned knowing The Tea Party and they being from his hometown of Windsor, Ontatrio.

Evan Konrad (Bed of Stars) - Long Way Out [1B] (2019)

New song from Evan Konrad released under his own name. I'm not sure what it means for "Bed of Stars" but Evan Konrad signed with Lava Records recently.

Musically? this sounds more dense and almost electronic sounding, compared to the Bed of Stars stuff.

of course Daniel Victor I would say would be 1 of if not THEE one who sort of "discovered" him. And Evan appears on 2 songs on the last Neverending White Lights album from 2012.

Anyway, when more comes up, I'll have to add more or post something new about it. Good for Evan!

Happy New Album Season 2018-2019

Not a lot to throw out there just yet, other than obviously today, November 1st, is the 1st day of the new album year/season 2018-2019.

I of course have the 2017-2018 Albums of the Year in the works. I'd estimate it'll be up within 2 weeks, but it may be sooner (possibly this weekend even, time allowing).

And I often add the next year's anticipation of course, which I may, but I also have an anticipation list already cookin'.

Also I think it was now 5 years ago when I started this change/process of November 1st to Halloween and I can't say overall it was a bad idea. December continues to be aloof for the most part with new albums, and the November albums always feel crammed/rushed, even if some good ones come out every year.

Will it continue? indefinitely as far as I can tell.

Names for 2018-2019 (which I am predicting will be deep a little like 2009 (2008-2009) was.

of1000faces - Sleeping's for Dreamers ft JIMMY GNECCO [1B] (2017)

Good lord, this is dreeeeeeeammeee as all hell! Shit, this is the Jimmy Gnecco I know and love. It almost reminds me of Mew.

Jimmy Gnecco seems to guest appear on a bunch of artists records every year or 2, and almost always has excellent tracks. From Neverending White Lights, to the Spiderman 2 Soundtrack (with Brian May), to Weathervane, to the Transformers Rollout Video Game soundtrack last year.

This is another example of the brilliance of Jimmy and I suppose credit this band of1000faces who I've never heard, but now mean to. Whose Bandcamp Page has a couple other things, but seems like they are just getting going in a lot of ways.



I'll have to check them out on the Social Medias and see if this is just 1 part of something else coming soon.

I just wanted to share this as I saw Josh Rundquist post this on FB (maybe others have as well?) maybe being Part 1 of a list of the songs that bring me to tears. I added some that give goosebumps and sometimes tears. I suppose I may make another list for that. Time and discipline permitting.

The Woods Brothers - The Woods Brothers (2015-2016)

So this somewhat long awaited debut album from Southern California-based musicians Chris and Nick Woods finally was released last week. And I ordered my copy from CDBaby linked below and finally got it in the mail yesterday.

Of course Casey Crescenzo was pretty extensively involved with this along with a number of other musicians. The song "Terra Firma" came out last year and Casey does sing vocals on it along with some other things. And I won't lie, that track is very strong and still remains right now my favorite.

But I can say there is a lot of great stuff on here beyond it. With the extensive amounts of guest vocalists, it does remind me of a Neverending White Lights album (or the last couple of Battles albums? Ayreon? among some others). And the songs do vary, yet Casey and The Dear Hunter's influence/presence seems pretty apparent at points.

I guess musically, beyond TDH, I hear bands like Bend Sinister or The Reign of Kindo or even Timmy Sean, namely with the piano and synth-driven sections and drum work.

I do anticipate giving this album a good amount of time in the coming days/weeks, but at least I can say I'm already enjoying it and impressed with its flow, production (Casey has a knack for this), and consistency. And because of that it does add some intrigue for what they may do in the future.

Random Artist Feature: Ours

This video, as a 2nd attempt, came out good in length (11 mins, relatively). It was a 2nd draft per say, largely because on the 1st attempt I gave more details about the backstory, etc.

That is kind of the issue or 1 of some issues with making these, as there's a lot to tell, details, anecdotes, etc.

Anyway, it did get me thinking of wanting to do just album feature videos at some point, which some might be rehash, some may not. I dunno. I often get the sense with doing just an album, I don't have a lot of specifics to talk about with each song, beyond 1 or 2 words, but that may all that is needed, even if it's an amazing, favorite song, etc.

But I do plan to continue to just make these for awhile now, and once I've sort of gotten through a lot of my favorites, I may then restart doing videos and try and do album reviews specifically. But not likely in series per say. I dunno, I guess I'll see.

In 2005, City and Colour released debut indie album, Sometimes, the beginning of a journey that would go on to establish Dallas Green as a world-renowned singer/songwriter. During that same time period, Canadian producer Daniel Victor was working on a new collaborative project called Neverending White Lights with the goal to feature a special guest artist on each track. The album’s debut single, "The Grace", featured an unforgettably powerful & emotional performance from Green whose vocals were the perfect affecting counterpart to Victor’s brooding and climactic music. The track instantly resonated with fans and shot to #1 on the Rock Chart, #3 on the Alt Chart and was the 6th most spun song on Canadian Rock Radio in 2006. Its memorable video dominated the top of the video charts for weeks, and the track went on to win SOCAN’s No.1 Song Award in 2006. 

The Woods Brothers - Terra Firma [Single] (2014-2015) (ft. Casey Crescenzo of The Dear Hunter)

This is the debut single from The Woods Brothers, and they were fortunate enough to have the services of Casey Crescenzo sing on this song.

I was introduced to them and the fact Casey was guesting on this song a few months ago per The Dear Hunter's fans forum.

Honestly, even without Casey, this is would be a pretty tasty track, but it sounds awesome with him.
What I'm not clear about is, is this the only track.

edit: okay in re-reading the topic here Casey is quite involved in this upcoming record, but he may not be singing on any other tracks, But there are other guest singers, including Thomas Erak from The Fall of Troy and some others, 1 may be Cedric from The Mars Volta even.

Also the Facebook page below has some nice footage in the studio with Casey.

I made a comment a few months ago about this being a little like Neverending White Lights with many different singers, etc. I'm curious how cohesive and even conceptual The Woods Brothers debut album may be.

Regardless, this 1st single is excellent, (even with Casey's vocals I suppose being a big part), and it adds intrigue to the full-length which from that topic, could be coming this Fall sometime.

Now I kind of wish I had contributed to the Indiegogo, but I'll likely pick it up regardless.

I'm again not going to go into great detail as this is another case of a record/band I slept on this past Season, but knew about, and didn't finally give the attention it probably deserved until now. And I still need to give it more time, of course, but I will only add the vague amounts of observations about it in this initial posting. Maybe an edit coming later?..I know how I habitually do that.

But this band from Lexington, KY and their new album Heretics is definitely a nice blend of modern progressive rock, some retro or classic rock, and post rock.

I did read a fair amount about them among progressive rock forums and rateyourmusic.com this past season, which is how I even knew and became curious about them. I recall 1 or 2 reviews saying there was a lot of good moments on this album, but it was a bit lengthly. Which I wouldn't disagree with, but I don't find it drags as much as I suspected it would.

The singer, sounds like a few different singers I enjoy, but like the singer from Grimus, he sounds probably most like Jonah from The Velvet Teen and maybe even more, Evan Konrad of Bed of Stars and whose sung with Neverending White Lights.

Favorites: probably the track "Elizabeth" stands out the most. Rather epic and a climax that really works well.

But I'll confess, it'll end up the hopefully soon to come Season Ending Countdown, but definitely higher than I would have put it a week ago. I feel bad though, like with iamthemorning's album, I slept on it all season, and thus I didn't get to experience it during this/its season of release, but so be it.. As I said aboiut Belighted, definitely better late than never.

Also given they are from Kentucky, I wonder if they ever do any touring, even in the Mid/Upper Midwest? because seeing them live might be a little more realistic than seeing iamthemorning sadly.

City and Colour - Settle Down [Kimbra cover, live] on Triple J's "Like a Version" (2012)

I know this video is from a couple of years ago, but I never saw it until this evening; and man, I am glad I did!

I don't have extensive amounts of time listening to Dallas Green and City and Colour (or Alexisonfire for that matter), but I do know and love his work on the Neverending White Lights song "The Grace."

Man, this sounds amazing! The guy has one of those voices that is just jaw-droppingly beautiful. It's so clean and thick tonally. Almost the sound of a perfectly clean and pristine sounding acoustic guitar. But it's HIS BLOODY VOICE, LOL.

I may really have to check out some City and Colour music, even if the style of music isn't typically my thing so much. His voice is just too good to sleep on alone. And this Kimbra cover is more evidence of that. Plus the arrangement is nice. Not a remake by any stretch. Very cool interpretation.

Neverending White Lights News (Act IV/Pledgemusic, More.)

Pretty excited for this. 2011's Act III: Love Will Ruin (part 1, it was titled anyway), was still of the quality of the other Act records for the most part. I know Jimmy Gnecco though recorded a song for Act III: Love Will Ruin, but it didn't end up on that record in 2011, so I wonder if it'll be on this. Although the way Daniel mentions he WILL BE RECORDING it in February, might suggest it won't. But maybe a few of songs recorded will still be included, re-recorded, or released as bonus tracks.

However, memory serves me that Daniel unfortunately lost a lot, if not all of his computer and recording technology due to flooding in his home towards the end of 2011, so maybe the song Jimmy was on, and the other songs intended for part 2 of Act III are gone sadly. That would explain much of why an Act III part 2 may not come out. But, from memory, many of those songs, Daniel was excited to release, which seems like it would be a shame to not have them be heard by more people and be released.

All possible answers that may or may not come. But this new record should come, and should be well worth talking about and hearing, when my time allows (it may be coming sooner than I anticipated with some recent success at work for myself).

Given NWL is a project that includes many Canadian guest musicians, I've always wondered/wanted to come up with a top 5 or 10 wishlist for a NWL record for guests. Here's a few of them (bands, or just members of the bands), just among Canadian acts:

Graham Butler - Dread Fascination (2013)

This is a project and the debut album from Los Angeles based musician Graham Butler. This album likely has been a long time in the making as I was introduced to Graham with a demo or 2 maybe around 2008 or 2009. I didn't realize he was living out in LA, as back then I saw him and some of his family members at the Liquid Tension Experiment concert in Chicago ("When the Keyboard Breaks," I recall).

But style wise, his music then and in just listening to this now, shares a lot of what many like in modern prog rock. I hear elements of Porcupine Tree and OSI among some others. Textured/Textural rock music with movements and time changes.

The songs I would say found my attention the most in just 1 listening,
"My Disguise" and "Flicker" with some of the big riffs and build ups.

And "Closer and ":Paradise" which have kind of a melancholy about them at points.

The vocals seem to sound like a few singers like Nick D'Virgilio, and maybe the singer from Sound & Shape, who I actually seem to hear a lot of singers who remind me of both of them, which isn't a bad thing necessarily.

Dread Fascination is the free-to-listen debut album from Graham Butler. I will admit, the description reminds me of Neverending White Lights, with doing concept albums with different voices, etc. But musically, I would say they don't share A TON but perhaps with hearing this more, I may trace more than just on the approach to songs/albums and concepts.

Bed of Stars - I Fell in Love in the City [EP] (2013)

Pretty excited for this to finally come out. I remember hearing about it sometime in 2011, when Daniel Victor was talking about Evan for the new Neverending White Lights album.

7 tracks is a little longer than some EPs in fact too. I also think given how much time Evan (and Daniel) spent on this, it likely will be all the better.

June 11th. It's coming on a limited  number on vinyl too as well as cd and digital.

I'm not certain if that trailer at the bottom is fully up-to-date given it was posted awhile ago, but it's probably worth sharing still.

Exactly 3 years later, after many revisions, up's and downs, and a world of patience, it is my honour to release it to you, on June 11th 2013.

A week prior to that, on June 4th 2013 I invite you to join me and the crew as we will be hosting a special radio broadcast via lovelessradio.com.

Where we stream the album in it's entirety, and discuss I Fell In Love In The City, it's creation and writing process.

deadmau5 & Imogen Heap - Telemiscommunications [Official Video]

I haven't watched or heard both the new single/video nor the 30min chat that is below between Imogen Heap and deadmau5. I could be wrong, but especially given his Canadian heritage, I think the name Deadmau5 I know most recently from working with, or at least mention from Canada's Daniel Victor of Neverending White Lights. But it may be something else as well, perhaps he did a remix or 2 on someone's album or b-side I recall seeing.

At any case, this song, I guess is the final track from deadmau5's latest record, and was collaboration between Imogen Heap and deadmau5.

Black Ribbons - Neuromancer (2012)

This is a only recently finished project's debut record from Daniel Victor of Neverending White Lights. The below bio piece from their site kind of explains everything for the most part. Stylistically, it's I'm presuming somewhat like NWL, but maybe less conceptual, and more ambient/spacey and influenced by New Wave music. (I've only heard the 2 tracks embedded below, but am awaiting my CD order in the mail).

But that isn't extremely different than some of the NWL music. At any case, this is in limited printing, and may be the only thing Daniel ever releases for this project. What does this mean for the next NWL album/Part 2 of Act 3? I suppose between this and some of the touring Daniel has done, the anticipated next chapter has taken a bit of a backseat. But understandably, especially after Daniel lost a lot with the flooding in his living quarters late last year.

I'll hopefully be able to post more details in here and/or the upcoming 2012 Album Index (assuming it makes it). But in the mean time, this is something on my radar down the stretch here in 2012.

In the late '00's Daniel Victor (Neverending White Lights) wrote and recorded an album as an experimentation in indie-synth-pop-noir-wonder. Originally intended as a duo with Lexi Valentine (Magneta Lane), the two mutually decided to sever their working relationship for personal reasons before production began. Victor continued on to realize the album in full, writing, recording, and performing the songs alone over the course of eight weeks in the winter of 2007. The album was built with elements of shoegaze, dream pop, dance, indie, and new wave by pairing vintage drum machines and synths with lush distorted electric guitars and retro-fitted punk bass lines. Using rich atmospherics and brooding emotive vocals, the end result is an eleven-song offering in themes of bittersweet love, lust, and tears - overshadowed by the reality of those very things during its conception.

 Due to unfortunate political circumstances the album was shelved with it's fate in question, until now. This debut will see a release in 2012.

 Notable influences: David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, The Cure, M83, New Order, Smashing Pumpkins.

Honestly, after hearing this, I'm really wondering if they've jumped the shark. Hospice was an incredibly moving and powerful record, which had its slower moments certainly, but also included those huge emotional vocal sections. And frankly, well-written, addictive and with many nmemorable parts.

2011's Burst Apart really did not. All I got from it was boredom. And honestly streaming this collection of 4 pieces, it may be even more boring than Burst Apart.

It's like they now have a fetish for slowcore of a kind, which is some of the most pointless kind of music for me to try and listen to. They almost are becoming like Low, the band they got compared to on Hospice and their previous 2 records, In the Attic of the Universe and Uprooted as well. Which never made much if any sense to me. They should have been compared to the likes of Ours, Neverending White Lights or Blackfield instead.

But seeing all those slowcore/Low comparisons, I wonder if Peter Silberman and the band were exposed to some actual slowcore and decided they wanted to actually make music of that sort.

Blech, o well. Hardly the 1st band whose early work was promising and then floundered.
