omg this song is unbelievably good!
This is what I would assume is a tune from Spectacular Sight III which an updated entry I posted last year would suggest otherwise, however that was when it was only going to be a single disc. SS is likely to be a double and that along with waiting to release it may now have had Jimmy add/edit/reconfigure the track list.
Regardless, this sounds like an Ours classic. The melody or theme is maybe a little repetitive, but the emotion in it is so rich, it only helps bring out its power and beauty.

Jimmy Gnecco interview podcast 8/17/19
I haven't listened to all of this yet (people talking at my work makes it hard, so I often pause frequently, sometimes for a long duration of time).
But there's a lot of good, brutally honest information and opinions Jimmy tells about.
He talks about why he's not on Social Media and why he remains quiet given the way the Music Industry is, and has been for a decade or more really.
Very similar to the approach Daniel Victor and Neverending White Lights have been.
And he reitrates how he wrote some 200 Songs over the course of the last decade or more, and with New Age Heroine II, Spectacular Sight III and several other projects/albums yet to be released, only like 40% of those will be recorded and released.
I don't have the time to spill my guts about how I feel about this, but just to say why I have been a loyal fan and lover of his music and way of doing things.
Those songs will all hopefully be released down the road, and the new single this Friday along with Spectacular Sight III are to be incredibly excited about.
But it just goes back to how much music there is from this man to be heard, and it frankly shouldn't matter if NOBODY EVERY CATCHES ON. WHICH IS BAFFLING AND PATHETIC, BUT KEEP BEATING THAT DEAD HORSE AND EVENTUALLY SOMETHING MAY CHANGE.
IN THE MEAN TIME, THE MUSIC IS GOING TO BE THERE FOR US FANS WHO DO GET IT (ALREADY).

Jimmy Gnecco w/ Royston Langdon @ 7th Street Entry 3/7/19
This is I count the 8th time I've seen Jimmy Gnecco live, and only the 2nd Solo. The 1st Solo as a quasi-Headliner in the "Someone to Die For" tour.
The other being when he opened for Greg Laswell which oddly, I believe was the last time I saw him, at The 7th Street Entry as well in 2013? I think it was.
Just Jimmy and April Bauer, no full-band. Jimmy on Acoustic guitar and April played on a number of tunes, adding synths (mellotron patches?).
Royston aka Leeds joined Jimmy for a couple of David Bowie tunes which were fun, although I would have enjoyed Jimmy singing some on Life on Mars?
But it was pretty epic, and the set list and length was not planned.
A lot of crowd interaction and storytelling, some maybe I might try to edit-in that I don't have time right now for.
the New Age Heroine stuff was great, Fly even more stripped down, was still the epic piece that it is. And the title track.
Even Made to Love, which is 1 of the tunes I'm only luke warm about on the record, was quite moving live.
The song on setlist.fm that is "Unknown" I think I know, but am not certain if it's unreleased or a song off 1 of the versions of The Heart (The Bells?)..The Bells is 1 of my favorites and has this cool busy guitar outro, which Jimmy played on the tune that I believe is marked "Unknown."
Anyway, time is not on my side, but yeah, another epic show from Jimmy.
There's some stuff he mentioned about Spectacular Sight and other anecdotes that would be worth sharing soon, hopefully in due time.
Also a shout-out to Rachel and Beth, 2 other Ours fans who remembered me from many shows I attended in the past. Local-Ours fanatics like myself.

Ours - New Age Heroine II (2018-2019)

Here are the Preorders from their official site/store. Interesting that the CD copies are limited (I preordered 1, maybe I should have ordered more than 1 for that reason).
And that crossed-out pricing, which may be limited?
I also still wonder if with the Remixed version of Ballet the Boxer I and Spectacular Sight III coming, if some kind of boxed set may eventually come out. But you know, all in good times.
Pretty excited to get my CD copy in January, and the Vinyl in 2019 (understandably, those will take longer, but ANY Ours Vinyl is something to look forward to).

Yeah, so heard this once 1.5 times on the laptop and most of it also in the car, and I am starting to warm up to it.
I still need to hear it with headphones, which hopefully tomorrow at work will happen.
1. Kill Me 4:47
enjoy it, nice album opener like most Ours albums.
2. You Are the Light 4:07
enjoy it more each time, nice flow
3. Pain Aside 4:39
very energetic and catchy. The most on this album, and it is a bit of an outlier in that sense here. Similar to say "Sing" from Ballet the Boxer. This track was also on the original Spectacular Sight track list.
4. My Love 5:08
Gorgeous ballad. A love song, maybe one of if not the best love songs Jimmy Gnecco has written. The standout ballad on an album that has a handful.
5. New Age Heroine 6:32
I like this, but am only maybe luke warm as it kind of has the same tempo throughout. It may need more time though.
6. Fallen Flower 4:08
Probably the track I'm struggling with the most. One of a bunch of slower, ballads on New Age Heroine. I'm going to keep going back to it to see if it grows.
7. Fly 6:03
Oh my gawd this track is stellar! Very dreamy and yet this awesome atmosphere and mood. Some wonderful vocal lines and drum work.
8. Miles Away 4:42
Like Fallen Flower, I'm struggling a little with this one. It was on the original track list for Spectacular Sight I recall, so I'm not sure why Jimmy released it on this one instead, but maybe that'll come out at some point. But this is another slower track that I may just need the headphones to finally have it click with me.
9. Made to Love 4:49
This is another slower, ballad type song, but I think the Falsetto vocal section in the middle and Static's guitar solo make this one really work among other things.
10. Ring the Bell 5:19
I enjoy this, but can't say I am into it yet at least, like many other tracks on this album. And as far as Ours albums closers, in some ways has a lot to compete with, with them having more or less a perfect track record (Get Up, Fall into My Hands, Red Colored Stars, and even As I Wander...)
Overall early impressions is I enjoy a ton of the music on this record already, and would have a hard time for it not to be the leader-in-the-clubhouse for 2018-2019 (22, Muse and some others though pending).
I am getting a similar feel to Ballet the Boxer I with it. A lot of highlights, and in terms of tone and go-to tracks, etc it is on-par, or maybe slightly better in some ways.
But this is only hearing it about 2 times. We'll see, and of course with Spectacular Sight looming, it'll have that to compare with or be paired-with in some ways.
Not sure if more commentary will happen in here, although for the 2018-2019 preview and I would think any singles/videos I'll have to post more.
And of course I'll be bumping this entry this coming week once the official links for its release are available. Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon, etc.

I have only listened to a little bit of it per it showed up while in the middle of doing laundry and getting ready to go out to dinner; i.e I don't yet know how much I love it since I haven't heard it yet.
But I have a feeling (in my fanboy bias) that I am going to love it, pretty much like every other Ours album.
Gotta head to bed now, but I likely will take it in tomorrow and post an EDIT in here about it.

2) Will hard copies be available? which I suspect they will, and along with the Remixing/Remastering of Ballet the Boxer I, might all of these be sold in a Boxed Set or Package, possibly vinyl?
3) Concept?
4)When does it officially go on sale? Black Friday? or Next Saturday the 24th? or maybe even Wednesday the 21st? Given it is Thanksgiving week, a lot of normal stuff is done on different dates like on Wednesday instead of Friday.
I will definitely post links when it does go officially on sale.

Ours Albums coming 2018 and 2019 (incl 1 this week 11/11-117 2018)
While the information on the upcoming Ours album and albums and his Solo album(s) have gone back and forth, it sounds like they are finally coming out.
Part 2: New Age Heroine is the album it sounds like there will be released this coming week.
Part 3: Spectacular Sight will be coming "Early in 2019."
along with a 3rd album likely in 2019 which I wonder was the solo album Jimmy was going to release back in late August/September.
He had to MIX all of these songs himself per the sad/unfortunate death of Jason Corsaro in 2017, who was working or planned to work and Mix Spectacular Sight.
I will of course be posting more details about all of these albums soon including New Age Heroine coming up this very week!
Also per the comments/q-and-a there, Jimmy does intend to record and release another solo album which may include the long desired by fans recording of LIVING IN A VIDEO.
Also Ballet the Boxer 1 is getting remixed I guess which while I don't mind a lot of the mix on it, I know many fans weren't thrilled with some of the mix on many songs from it; so that Remix/Remastering is another thing to anticipate soon.
5 fucking Ours/Jimmy Gnecco releases to plan for. And a Tour which Jimmy is doing, but it's not coming to Minnesota unfortunately. But I wouldn't be surprised if a full OURS tour of the States happens to support these albums in 2019 and/or 2020.

Also, Part 3 Spectacular Sight coming in early 2019, and a remix and master of Ballet the Boxer!!!
@ny_drummerMy recording partner who was set to mix the record with me passed away, and so I had to mix everything myself. All 22 songs, and I decided to complete them all and put out two records!
@lynds.gold I decided to call the solo album and (an?) Ours album, but I have tons of new songs to record for a solo record.
@powernoizeDecided to make them all Ours records. Will be 3 in total, and then another solo record down the line.

It's good to be an Ours/Jimmy Gnecco fan. I just wonder/hope he is able to release these albums as he wishes and distribute them, while retaining the rights.

So, news!
Jimmy is trying to figure out how to release the records and still keep the rights to the songs, so the two finished albums are going to be released sometime in 2019.
But, he also said that he was gonna release 7-9 songs for free in a couple of weeks. This being mainly sad piano songs that he didn't want dragging down the full Ours records.
Oh and he has also given a bunch of songs to Hannah Gernand and recorded them with her.

So nothing is really been posted officially that I have seen (but I haven't looked everywhere). But on the Killtheband message someone shared this, which I am wondering if they got it at 1 of Jimmy's recent shows.

The album was pushed back for various reasons that haven't really been explained except for the fact the guy who was to mix it, Jason Corsaro, passed away very sadly last Summer after a battle with Cancer. How much of this album he worked on? I dunno, and I'm pretty sure all the music was recorded before his passing. But I wonder if the influence/inspiration on parts of it could have changed after that.
Anyway, when more of the details come, of course I'll pass them along.
Oh and 'Made to Love" which I think has been played live a lot recently, I guess will be coming on the next album. I hope that is sooner than 5 years from now, although I still am for Jimmy the band taking their time. But as I posted below, some 40 songs were considered for this album. Recorded I guess which goes back to the fact they and Jimmy specifically have a ton of songs still unreleased. I question if/when many of the older ones will get released, but who knows.
Us fans would be happy just to have them put up online, at least if they have been recorded and properly mixed and mastered.
I should repost a list sometime soon. But in the mean time, June and August are likely 2 times to get excited as an Ours fan.

bumping this as this album is only a couple of weeks away.
And lucky enough for me, being a Black Card Holder, they were kind enough to send a sampler of 3 songs to download yesterday.

Love them all, "Across the Clouds" is mesmerizing and maybe my favorite among them.
We may not get a ton of information about this album until release day on the 27th per that sampler came from bandcamp and some artists have done the whole little-to-no-info with a Bandcamp release. Not even a preorder.
I'm cool with that, but still totally anxious to hear the rest of this. The reasoning behind the sampler was in the email the CD Release show on June 17th (in NJ) was supposed to have the album for sale, but I guess it won't be. But the sampler is not a band alternative.
edit: just got an Updated email.

Ours new album III drops next Spring! A free download of a new song for those going to the show in NYC 1-week from tonight at the Bowery Ballroom. Hopefully that track will be streaming on their FB/Website and YouTube/Soundcloud, etc soon after.
Why the title III? Not Ballet the Boxer Part 2, etc..I can only guess it may sort of be like a 3rd Chapter (Chapter 3: Money, lol) sort of in the history of the band.
Or maybe the III symbolizes a number of things.
I also can't help but think of the band Three as well and what seems like a lot of parallels and similar fanbase in some ways.
At any case, as a huge fan of Ours, I can't wait to hear this album of course.

It's good to be an Ours/Jimmy Gnecco fan. I just wonder/hope he is able to release these albums as he wishes and distribute them, while retaining the rights.

So, news!
Jimmy is trying to figure out how to release the records and still keep the rights to the songs, so the two finished albums are going to be released sometime in 2019.
But, he also said that he was gonna release 7-9 songs for free in a couple of weeks. This being mainly sad piano songs that he didn't want dragging down the full Ours records.
Oh and he has also given a bunch of songs to Hannah Gernand and recorded them with her.

So nothing is really been posted officially that I have seen (but I haven't looked everywhere). But on the Killtheband message someone shared this, which I am wondering if they got it at 1 of Jimmy's recent shows.
Also it was posted there as well, the 1st single in June and the album August.

Oh and 'Made to Love" which I think has been played live a lot recently, I guess will be coming on the next album. I hope that is sooner than 5 years from now, although I still am for Jimmy the band taking their time. But as I posted below, some 40 songs were considered for this album. Recorded I guess which goes back to the fact they and Jimmy specifically have a ton of songs still unreleased. I question if/when many of the older ones will get released, but who knows.
Us fans would be happy just to have them put up online, at least if they have been recorded and properly mixed and mastered.
I should repost a list sometime soon. But in the mean time, June and August are likely 2 times to get excited as an Ours fan.

bumping this as this album is only a couple of weeks away.
And lucky enough for me, being a Black Card Holder, they were kind enough to send a sampler of 3 songs to download yesterday.

Love them all, "Across the Clouds" is mesmerizing and maybe my favorite among them.
We may not get a ton of information about this album until release day on the 27th per that sampler came from bandcamp and some artists have done the whole little-to-no-info with a Bandcamp release. Not even a preorder.
I'm cool with that, but still totally anxious to hear the rest of this. The reasoning behind the sampler was in the email the CD Release show on June 17th (in NJ) was supposed to have the album for sale, but I guess it won't be. But the sampler is not a band alternative.
edit: just got an Updated email.
the album is being pushed back for reasons beyond the band's control I guess. Some 40 songs were considered initially, 20 are still in the running.
So it won't be released on June 27th I guess.
This sampler certainly helps. Very excited still, it may just not come out for a few more months. No biggie.
And I do plan on buying it even for the fact as a Black Card holder, they are going to send it to me for free. I just want to give the band money regardless. Plus hardcopy, vinyl of course, etc.

Ours new album III drops next Spring! A free download of a new song for those going to the show in NYC 1-week from tonight at the Bowery Ballroom. Hopefully that track will be streaming on their FB/Website and YouTube/Soundcloud, etc soon after.
Why the title III? Not Ballet the Boxer Part 2, etc..I can only guess it may sort of be like a 3rd Chapter (Chapter 3: Money, lol) sort of in the history of the band.
Or maybe the III symbolizes a number of things.
I also can't help but think of the band Three as well and what seems like a lot of parallels and similar fanbase in some ways.
At any case, as a huge fan of Ours, I can't wait to hear this album of course.

of1000faces - Sleeping's for Dreamers ft JIMMY GNECCO [1B] (2017)
Good lord, this is dreeeeeeeammeee as all hell! Shit, this is the Jimmy Gnecco I know and love. It almost reminds me of Mew.
Jimmy Gnecco seems to guest appear on a bunch of artists records every year or 2, and almost always has excellent tracks. From Neverending White Lights, to the Spiderman 2 Soundtrack (with Brian May), to Weathervane, to the Transformers Rollout Video Game soundtrack last year.
This is another example of the brilliance of Jimmy and I suppose credit this band of1000faces who I've never heard, but now mean to. Whose Bandcamp Page has a couple other things, but seems like they are just getting going in a lot of ways.
I'll have to check them out on the Social Medias and see if this is just 1 part of something else coming soon.

REACT TO: WatchMojo.com's Top 10 Male Falsettos

I'd love to have the time to break this down more in detail, and truth be, I just skimmed it without sound just to see the results.
But obviously the biggest issue I have with this list is having Thom Yorke anywhere on it. I've said it a million times; the guy can't sing. His voice is highly NASAL and nauseating to listen to, and he almost always sounds like he's high and baked. Y-U-C-K.
The including of Jeff Buckley I am happy to see, and rightfully so as he could wail with the best.
Matt Bellamy as an honorable mention is nice, but given he was in there, he should have replaced Yorke and/or a few others.
Having Prince and Michael Jackson on there is fine, but I'm a little surprised MJ isn't higher and higher than Prince.
MISSING?
For one Freddie Mercury, lol.
But of course the failure that always has and always will happen in lack of exposure to 2 huge names to me.
Jimmy Gnecco..more or less the greatest living and/or working singer today, especially with Falsettos. The man can wail better than most of that list.
Andre Matos..just listen to Holy Land and Ritual from Shaman, and there's no questioning both his soaring voice and vocal lines.
And I suppose to add to that, the more well known Metal names like Bruce Dickinson and especially Rob Halford.
I'd even include Darroh from Fair to Midland in there. Both an amazing Falsetto and unique or original in plenty of ways.
edit: and I'm sure the Fiancee would include the likes of George Michael and especially Mr.Smooth and Blue-Eyed Soul himself, Michael McDonald (which I also would not have issue with).
So, of course Watchmojo and their lemming millennial voters fail again, but that's par for the course anyway.

Random Artist Feature: Ours
This video, as a 2nd attempt, came out good in length (11 mins, relatively). It was a 2nd draft per say, largely because on the 1st attempt I gave more details about the backstory, etc.
That is kind of the issue or 1 of some issues with making these, as there's a lot to tell, details, anecdotes, etc.
Anyway, it did get me thinking of wanting to do just album feature videos at some point, which some might be rehash, some may not. I dunno. I often get the sense with doing just an album, I don't have a lot of specifics to talk about with each song, beyond 1 or 2 words, but that may all that is needed, even if it's an amazing, favorite song, etc.
But I do plan to continue to just make these for awhile now, and once I've sort of gotten through a lot of my favorites, I may then restart doing videos and try and do album reviews specifically. But not likely in series per say. I dunno, I guess I'll see.

This will be a place of love, and inspiration where we can come together to experience the amazing power of music. Sounds all hippy, but it's what I truly believe. More than ever I feel like it's important to come together as musicians and artists, inspire one another, and work on our craft. Technology is amazing, but it cannot replace the human element. I believe that when musicians work on their craft and then come together and put themselves into the performance, that is where the magic exists. No computer can ever make up for that. I will do my part here in this new space to help others prepare for exactly that. Playing live, and capturing the human spirit in a recording. It's not rocket science, but it is a science, and one that is slipping away. I am going to do what I can to preserve it. I'll keep you all posted on any and all details, and events in this new venture. EchoWing is born.

New Jimmy Gnecco interview
25+ minutes and a few live clips. Not the most in-depth interview ever with Jimmy, but some good detailed info still. Stuff about Ballet the Boxer 1, 2 etc...and these shows he's doing out in Hollywood. If only I lived or could visit there now.
"Rock is Dead" is kind of a sad idea popping up more of late, which I suppose it sort of makes some sense, on a commercial level. But as a fan, having it still being out there on a underground level, it doesn't really matter much to me. Bu the romantic part of Rock music being visible when I was growing up and before, being gone in some ways, is sad, or a sad way to look at things in some ways.
I do like how he talked about Vinyl, but as far as having the older Ours records come out on Vinyl, I kind of wish he had included more about. I worry a little about the cost from the labels who own the rights, maybe being the biggest obstacle for putting those out, but who knows. I'd love them all on vinyl of course.

I'm not going to writeup even brief blurbs at this point about all of these just in the interest of time. And I started a few other of these song lists WMJ.COM won't make, which tells you also why I'm just posting this little explanation.
But I will say, Ours, are as I've written many times, one of my favorite bands of course, ever since becoming a fan in 2005. Jmmy Gnecco is my favorite actively working and modern/younger singer. The list on the site linked above, for one, may have been posted yesterday given Jimmy Gnecco's 41st birthday was yesterday (happy birthday to Jimmy by the way).
The list itself, while is not bad, as my list differs, even among the long list of Honorable Mentions (and believe me, I did not include many songs I love even in there). I am surprised to not see Sometimes in there, afterall, it is Ours biggest song, or *hit* per say as even the video received a fair amount of airplay on MTV2 back in 2001-2002.
Maybe because it became so popular, this writer/fan making that list finds it overrated or overplayed? I guess I could find that the case personally, except some 9+ years later, I have failed to grow sick of it. It just has so much emotion and such an incredible climax, my ears and brain, I somehow doubt will ever get sick of it.
Among my list, probably the biggest track sticking out is "In a Minute" from Precious. I happen to love it for a few reasons, but maybe mostly from the combination of the lyrics or message I get and with the crescendo. It sort of says fuck you to anyone who says or makes you feel like you can't do something, anything really. And that speaks to me on some level at least. Kind of the idea "I am not like the others, but I could be if I wanted to." or even to an extent of "You Laugh at Me because I'm different, but I laugh at you because you're all the same." And I could be like the others, or anything else, in a minute; that's how easy it would be for me, etc. But those people who act or say that I couldn't be like them (or as good as them, etc), are wrong, and don't know how wrong they are, as I could be as good or better and LIKE them, in a minute.
Anyway, the band and many fans aren't crazy about that tune, but I honestly have always found it very relate or connectable.
Maybe I'll add more to this at some point (and more likely not sadly, time, etc).

Fantastic tune, but..what the hell???? I swear I went to his page a few times over the last month and saw this, and just assumed it was nothing extensive. Or I found a video of it live maybe even a year or 2 ago.
I guess regardless, what a terrific track, and it also went along with his post about being inspired by the tour with Lana Del Rey to make a new solo record. And just today an email was sent out about that.

Grimus - Emergence (2014)

I saw this band's name like a week ago on rateyourmusic in 1 of the Ours albums reviews.
They're from Romania.
Emergence is their 3rd LP, their 2 previous 2011's Egretta and 2008's debut Panikon along with this new album that dropped in March, I have been taking in over the last week and I can say I am enjoying them more and more with each listening.
But this record Emergence, more than the other two initially.
Hmm, I guess I don't have heaps of details to dissect it yet (perhaps more-so in the midyear report?), but it's one of those records you hear track-after-track and enjoy more or less every song. There aren't any obvious standout songs at this point, I think because for one, none of the songs are incredibly long. But also it just seems to work as greater than the sum of its parts.
Now, I'm filling in on KFAI tomorrow night and was looking to pick out a track to play, and I suppose I'll just include the songs I've narrowed it down to some 3+ times hearing the album.

I am leaning towards Satellites as that track sort of has what a progressive rock fan may enjoy I suppose.
Their sound on this album specifically seems to remind me of a number of bands: Strata, Ours, Muse, The Antlers, The Velvet Teen, Klimt 1918, In Reverent Fear and others, but the more I listen to them and this record, their songwriting still works really well, the similarities are more charming or not distracting.
Their sound includes vocal harmonies, piano, dynamics, different guitar textures, what I would guess is at least 2 different lead vocalists, although both their Facebook and Wikipedia pages only list Bogdan Mezofi as the vocalist. But it's obvious, especially between their 1st record and this new one (and their last record), there are at least 2 kinds of voices. Perhaps Bogdan is that versatile? I have my doubts, but if he is, he's pretty amazing. Regardless, he has a very good voice, even as much as he can sound like the likes of Eric Victorino, Judah Nagler and especially Jimmy Gnecco at times. It doesn't exactly sound *exactly* like them, nor as if HE'S TRYING TO SOUND LIKE THEM, which some singers sadly come across like they are (even if they aren't actually trying to).
Anyway, this band and this album are kind of my biggest obsession right now. I suppose I'll see how this and they hold up throughout the year/future, but it almost feels like one of those bands I've been living under a rock and have finally discovered. Except they are pretty obscure. Probably going back to when I discovered someone like Kacica in 2008/2009. I may find myself almost attaching myself to them.
I can't say for sure, but I just sense they are the kind of band I will think of in pretty high regard. I mean Emergence I am enjoying the most, but the other 2 records I found myself turning my head a handful of times as well with.

But that would be too difficult of them I guess, lol.

I suppose given it's not coming to Minnesota anyway, it's not like I'd be paying to see Jimmy and then be thrown among the Lana Del Rey hipsters, but whatevah.
I still say in a few years, she's not going to be half as popular as she still kind of is. But as far as Jimmy's relations with her, more confirmation about it.

I just noticed this on the Ours fans forum a bit ago. Lana Del Rey I guess wrote a song (demo?) a few years ago, and based on some comments and obviously the title, had some kind of interest or relationship with Jimmy Gnecco of Ours.
Some of the Youtube comments cite her video for the song "Born to Die," has a guy who she may have cast intentionally due to a little bit of a resemblance to Jimmy.
That may be true, but the resemblance only goes as far as him being skinny, white, dark hair and a lot of tattoos. His face at times looks next to nothing like Jimmy, i.e. if I saw the guy in that video on the street, I would never suspect it was Jimmy or resembling someone like Jimmy really.
As far as this song; like pretty much every other song I've heard from Lana Del Rey, it's not very good. Now, if by chance it leads some hipsters or teeny bopper kids to Jimmy/Ours music, I suppose there are some benefits to that potentially (and some drawbacks of course too).
But unless I want to start googling for internet gossip about Jimmy and Lana Del Rey, which I honestly probably shouldn't bother, this is likely just a footnote. I suppose asking Jimmy sometime about Lana or this song, if he's heard it, might be worth doing. Maybe they dated or were friends? or she's a fan of his/he's a fan of hers, etc.
But until that crosses my perspective, I kind of just see this is a funny little reference that may not mean much if anything in the near future or longer down the line. I really don't foresee Lana Del Rey as anything special, nor having a big future really. She likely has gotten as big as she ever will get, and in a few years she'll be like many of the flavors-of-the-month that the hipsters hype up and then forget about.

Significant Albums: Jellyfish - Spilt Milk (1993)
This album. I can't recall the exact time, even year exactly, but it had to have been in the mid 90's, possibly 1996 or 1997, when I would guess Mike Portnoy had dropped the name Jellyfish in 1 or more interviews I read. Per Metal Edge or maybe even on the old "Under a Cyber Moon" Dream Theater website.
But I distinctly remember checking this album and Bellybutton out, and finding both for not a lot, likely at Cheapo. And the truth was, I wasn't crazy about them. Maybe it was the title "Spilt Milk" or the girl on the cover, but it didn't jump out at me.
So, they both remained in my cd collection, and I think the next point their name came up was when I was at KFAI around 2000, interviewing of all bands, local prog metal/Queensryche-like band Conditioned Response. And one of those guys on the air mentioned that he was listening to Jellyfish.
So, at that point I recall re-checking them and those cds I had out. And I do remember liking them, actually Bellybutton more.
And in the coming years, with listening to both albums more, and also seeing Mike Portnoy and some others online use their name more and more, I became pretty won over by them.
And I'd say over the last 7 or 8 years at least, maybe more, they have stood out more and more as being ahead of their time in a lot of ways.
Now with this album compared to Bellybutton, I came to see them as about equal, but in the past 4 or 5 years, I've given in to the fact this is their finest work. It just works so well on a production level, and on a flow or track-2-track level.
I recall once thinking and telling people about them as being like The Beach Boys doing progressive rock, which in a vague sense still makes some sense. But I also hear a ton of Beatles influence, as well as Queen, XTC and even groups like ELO. Along with sharing some qualities with some of their contemporaries like King's X, Galactic Cowboys and even Faith No More to a small degree. And Toy Matinee even I would later come to hear/agree with.
Even people like local Minnesota songwriter/popstress Jenny Case and Jimmy Gnecco of Ours have spoken about their love of Jellyfish and this album.
They just found a way to combine power-pop with a classic rock feel, that somehow sounded really clean and modern. When you listen to Jellyfish, and Spilt Milk specifically, you think it was music made in the 70's, but like it was remastered or something, because the recording sounds very hot and almost glitzy and layered.
To not name some of my favorites would be silly. Songs like "New Mistake" and "Sabrina Paste and Plato" are just so catchy and ear-worm like, they are impossible to not love, the more I hear them.
"So serene, Sabrina makes me feel..dah dah dah dah dah dah dahhhhhhhhhh"
"Joining a Fanclub" is a great sort of track to kickstart this album off, which I always think of Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning being in some Beatles fanclub.
Andy Sturmer, not only is an incredible drummer, but his voice is 1 of the biggest reasons I think Jellyfish stands out. It is just so crisp and the little raspy element makes it sound so distinct.
I have always felt the 1st half of this album has this amazing energy, which has only seldom been matched, so much so, I always look for, but rarely find other albums that have that.
Also the lyrics seem to stay with me frequently,
like from Ghost at Number 1:
"how does it feel to be the only one that knows that you're right"
That certainly is a line that I can and have related to in many ways.
I'm sure there are a ton of points I am not remembering at this very moment about this album, that I may or may not try and edit in eventually. But the thing about Jellyfish and Spilt Milk is, it was clearly to me ahead of its time, and frankly. there has not been a band to make a record as good or quite like it since in this sort of progressive power-pop. Combining similar if not the same influences. Some have tried like The Wondermints or recently The Pillbugs (or even Bleu), but it hasn't happened. I guess I keep waiting for it to happen. The New Pornographers and The Apples in Stereo are sort of the closest thing to modern bands who have made power-pop I enjoy a lot (or getting a bit looser, stuff like Self, The Dissociatives, Bend Sinister and many others), but neither have come close to matching either JF LP, and this being their Swan Song thus the 1 to think of.
A reunion would be a miracle at this point as Roger and Andy can't stand each other I guess, so their likely is a better chance I join 1 of them live or in the studio, but I guess I still keep a small fraction of hope it could happen before I die.
If only I had been a fan and been old enough to go, I probably would have seen them at First Ave supporting this album in '93 (or '94).
The thing is, when Jellyfish came out, they were such a contrast to the whole Grunge movement, that it probably was as big of a reason they ended. Why a band like Dream Theater didn't go by the wayside, and they did? I dunno, maybe personalities. But the 90's pop and alternative music really doesn't compare to them in so many ways. A band like Weezer for example, were around not long after, but because they had enough of a garage sound, I think made it.
It's kind of a shame, but also likely a case where had Jellyfish continued on, their music may have suffered. So in that sense, their legacy never got tainted.
It is also definitely worth mentioning how this was their Swan Song, after 3 years from Bellybutton their debut album. Spilt Milk does not include the work of singer/songwriter Jason Falkner, who was on Bellybutton. Why this album is as good as it is may speak to why Jason left, i.e. he wasn't getting enough of his songwriting involved with the band. Of course there's no way to know what this or other work may have been like with him, but it may have ultimately been for the benefit of both JF and Jason.
