Mostly about Black Friday Record Store Day 2019, and mostly the Wife's stuff. But some cool stuff and a bit of a story/commentary.
um, yeah the weight I lost looks almost creepy in this video, but it makes sense I suppose given what I am going through right now.
Given i am on PTO this week, I may make some more videos depending on time.

2017-2018 Midseason Albums List
I was going to wait and try and spend a few more days reviewing some of these records, but per it's already May 9th, 9 days past the Midseason mark, and the fact the 2nd half releases are already coming, I think it makes sense to finally publish, even if only 60 or 70% of these records have been taken-in well enough.
I.e. Some of these titles could go down or up quite a bit come even the 3/4-year update in a few months. Although more likely down just based on new stuff coming, etc.
But I can say with good certainty, this year seems like a more deep year than 2016-2017 already. The top 10-15 records are almost all records I would foresee listening to some if not regularly the rest of this year, but also in the years to come.
I do think it was clear when The Family Crest and Kindo dropped last month, it kind of accelerated the Year and really came up a nice back and forth between 2 records. And having listened to both quite a few times, Crest seems likely to have charged ahead by quite a bit, and may be very hard to beat come November.
Now the counter to the deeper or deep year thought is, just on the surface, there's not a length-ly list of obvious titles to expect from now until Halloween. Bend Sinister, Dream the Electric Sleep, The Sea Within, and then likely albums from Ours, Neverending White Lights, Vennart, Sculptured, Soundscape and Foals. And of course a long list of hopefuls/possibles but hardly any certainty about.
Of course there likely will be any number of records that will show up from either artists I've never heard of, or had no clue were working on a new record (The Tea Party? Arch/ Matheos? The Gathering? Menomena? Opus Dai? Gatherer? etc etc.....unfortunately the likes of dredg I wouldn't expect until 2019 unless a single or possibly an EP).
Podcast and/or Video should be coming soon (hopefully), including the 2nd half anticipation of course.

Typhoon - Remember [Official Video]
Great melancholy tune! and great video. One of my favorites from Offerings certainly.
Not sure, but the memory of the guy in the flannel might be Kyle Morton of Typhoon.

Typhoon at The Turf Club St.Paul, MN 1/17/18
Short review:
Typhoon played their 1st headlining show in Minnesota for the 1st time since 2013.
This may not be the 100% EXACT set list per I didn't know (or even could hear clearly) every song of the night, but I got this from the show in Utah on January 10th per setlist.fm.
I know they played "Remember" 1 of 3 favorites off Offerings. And I know they played Rorschach as well as I would guess 3-6 other songs from Offerings.
And I recall they played "Artificial Light" from White Lighter.
Common Sentiments
Hunger and Thirst
Rorschach
Summer Home
Darker
The Lake
Prosthetic Love
Possible Deaths
Remember
CPR / Claws Pt.2
Wake
Empiricist
Young Fathers
Encore:
The Honest Truth
Artificial Light
Anyway, to give some other basic details. The band had 7 or 8 members on stage, which for most bands would be quite a lot. But honestly, per my 1st/last experience seeing them at The Cedar Cultural Center with i'm almost certain at least 15 maybe more like 20 members both on stage and on the floor, Typhoon was a bit stripped down.
But still, great show, 2 drummers, a violinist, keyboards, 2 guitars, multiple singers besides Kyle Morton, etc.
And I follow why per cost. It can't be easy touring with that many people, etc.
The openers were pretty good. Sunbathe actually is Maggie from Genders new band, and were nice, sort of dream/shoegaze pop. She told me a new Genders album is coming soon too.
And Mimicking Birds actually I may check out now, as they had some of these cool guitar tones and moods. The crowd next to me for both openers and even for a bit of Typhoon, kept talking, which didn't help.
But overall fun show. And I definitely have more content about Typhoon soon per inspiration and of course that Chamber Folk/Rock/Pop entry sometime in the near future, which I have been working on here and there over the last few weeks.
Oh and also I did learn that A New Kind of House, the EP from 2011 from Typhoon actually features members of The Family Crest. A friend of mine who loves TFC and for that matter, the new TFC fans per The Dear Hunter tour, would have even more reason to check out Typhoon.
And of course vinyl coming on Video (both the new album and some cds and 7" I got at the show last night)

AMR Podcast #8: Typhoon - Offerings and Chamber/Baroque Rock
Instead of making the entry 1st and then making a podcast, I decided to do the opposite previewing what may be in the Chamber/Baroque Rock/Pop/Folk entry.
Also initially sparked-by Offerings, just giving initial thoughts on this great new album from Typhoon.
I do think there is almost a yearning to do something soon about progtessive college rock in the 2000's and nostalgia. Maybe a Top 10 Albums or something, initially. Maybe make a podcast or video about that specifically.
I of course didn't mention every name, namely Sufjan Stevens who may be the most successful/popular/influential artist making Chamber Rock, but so be it. He'll be included in the actual entry.
I also failed to mentioned The River Empires as well..but there's many others of course.

The new Typhoon album OFFERINGS is finally coming out on January 12th, 2018!
Sounds MASSIVE and largely AMBITIOUS, but then again this is Typhoon. Their VERY NAME evokes images of that kind of size, let alone the size of their band itself (25 or 30 members?
Incredibly stoked for this album of course!
White Lighter from 2013 was awesome, and it's been a long 4+ years since then.
And below is the 1st Suite of a sort that is 21 minutes long (for those who got to attend a Listening Party, it's not new. I'm highly envious of them, but alas, there was not Minneapolis Listening Party over the last few weeks. Hopefully for the next album?
edit: LOVING the 1st movement/21 minutes below. They may actually TOP White Lighter with this thing, which seems hard to fathom.

Down in the floodplains waiting on a cure Blessed be the water may the water make us pure Forms will be unborn in the mirror within the mirror Rejoice now, Rejoice now The Reckoning is here.
WAKE Wake and I have been reborn. The tide concedes that homely shore and I am benighted. All my lines unlearned. Cry out will God (or somebody) please turn the light on. Restore me to that empty room—expands out like hot air balloons. A woman comes she brings me food. I shit the bed in solitude. My life one brief unbroken loop—goes round and round with nothing left to hold onto. But if there’s nothing, if there’s nothing, then what’s that song that keeps hounding me? In the still dark of the morning. Just one more cradle down the creek. Au revoir my little memories. Tell me: This is not your loss. This is your offering.
RORSCHACH Eyes on the screen. We have all the information now but what does it mean? Reason’s a tease. Drank up all that hemlock, here I am just reading the leaves. Left wondering: what happened to the life we lost, that got lost in the living? All this fiction makes me nervous, turns out it was blood spilled on the canvas we admired just like some Rorschach painting. The film in your brain—it edits to remember, keeps the figure in the frame. A sacrificial violence, all those passed over in silence then cast out with the blame. And I’m trying to stay sane—meanwhile, the river of forgetfulness starts spilling the banks. Caught in a lie and instead of fessing up we'd sooner just go out of our heads. I’ve been holding up my end when I should have doubled down on my own atom bomb shelter instead.
EMPIRICIST Empty room. Cast about for a familiar object. Because my body needs coordinates to move. In the dark. Range of motion shrivels all around me. All my nightmares I am slowly being cocooned. A single calf in the hecatomb. Crescent moon. Hollowed out of all my fabled insides. Occam shave me down to primal truth—return me to the womb. Mother pulled from father’s ribs, little baby in a crib, hands reaching up. Before the blinding light is split through the prism of your organs into color. All that being and nothingness, on the same möbius strip. Sleep and waking up. On the first day. Wipe the blank slate. And you join the banquet. Served up helpless on a plate. You find your land legs. And you learn to imitate. You’ll wear any feathers and hope that your efforts attract a mate. One day your children find you, locked in the bathroom, staring in horror at the reflection of your face. You say you're sorry to the guests at your party. But you can't help wonder, who is this person you celebrate? And so the light fades. It’s still your birthday. Blow out your past lives like they're candles on the cake.
ALGERNON A woman leans in her chair. Holds her face close to mine. She’s curious, am I comfortable? Would I care to give it one more try? She holds the picture up while she studies my eyes. I’m trying hard to recall the routine, but I can't and so I improvise. This one's of my father. Wearing ladies clothes. I walked in on him once as a kid. Must have thought nobody else was home. It's a lie and she knows. But there's no other use. And anyway what you want and what you want to be are easily confused. The moment stretches on. Like the first day of school and I've answered wrong. Like a self-enclosed short-circuit goes around forever until it's gone. A woman shrinks in her chair. She says the picture's of you. I have no idea what she's talking about but I nod my head as if I do. Look at there such a strong man. All the virtues of youth. You led a good life by every account. There were people who looked up to you. I say enough is enough. You have found me out. You have called my bluff. I don't know anything about this stuff. I’m just tired and I’m waiting for my wife to pick me up. A woman slouched in her chair disrupts the silence to say. The part of you that I love is still in there even if it doesn't know my name. The moment stretches on. Like the colonnade at the Parthenon. It’s an unmarked grave but somebody's laid some flowers for Algernon. ------

AMR Podcast #5: 2017-2018 Anticipation (1st Quarter?)
40 minutes, not surprisingly. Had to use a different site per the length (or size?) was too long/big. Which is weird per 1 of the previous podcasts was over 30 minutes, so I can't be sure whether this site tunetotube has a time or size restriction.
It's really mostly rehash of the Anticipation/Calendar entry that I continue to bump, only some elaboration on most of the names.
I recall in the past, I have made preview videos that were 2 or 3 parts, so go figure. But I figured, this is a only audio and a "podcast" of sorts, so 40 minutes isn't all that excessive.
I can't guarantee, but truly do mean to make more of these this year as many of the announcements come in throughout the year of what comes out.
And of course if I want to look at it by quarter, the 1st quarter ends January 31st, so I guess I'll see what has been added/updated from now til then to decide on making another 1 of these that soon.
Also 1/4-year like a Midyear list like I have done at the end of April the last few years.

Crippled Black Phoenix - White Light Generator (2014)
I enjoy a lot of the records this band has made, even if some of the pieces seem to/can overstay their welcome a bit. And this record doesn't appear to be too short like some of their other extensive-ideas based albums.
But, it's coming in only a couple of weeks, and I usually enjoy more than enough from them to still want to go back to it.
Also interesting how the title almost looks like the great Typhoon record from 2013, White Lighter. Maybe the 2 bands should tour together?

But, it's coming in only a couple of weeks, and I usually enjoy more than enough from them to still want to go back to it.
Also interesting how the title almost looks like the great Typhoon record from 2013, White Lighter. Maybe the 2 bands should tour together?

Typhoon - Young Fathers [Official Video]
Nice video. Boy hanging out in forest with a friend likely created by his imagination. Like The Dear Hunter's latest video for "Shouting at the Rain,"..I am reminded of (Spike Jonze's) Where the Wild Things Are with this one too.
Good song too of course.

Genders - Get Lost (2013)

http://genderspdx.bandcamp.com/music
https://www.facebook.com/GendersPDX
The release date is on December 8th, 2013. Yeah, a bit odd day/week/month for a new original-music full-length record, but so be it. They self-released it I guess, so they don't have to concern themselves with distribution and competition for when it can be shelved in stores, etc.
I am finally checking it out just now, although I don't likely have enough time to get through it all yet. (it's a minor miracle I'm able to listen to it yet anyway, with my no-music-at-work approach the last few months). But I am intrigued enough by this band and maybe just Katherine Paul as a musician/songwriter/singer, I want to make what little time I have to share it in here.
I would say the genre-blending of those styles I posted above kind of encapsulates Genders sound for the most part. I guess they do have a poppy/happy side like on the track "Golden State." (I can't help but wonder if the Forest Park track "Golden" is in anyway connected to it, but unlikely).
But I probably shouldn't forget to add, while Katherine Paul's drum work is very refined and stands out frequently on what I'm hearing here, the other members also excel in many ways. Guitarist Stephen Leisy knows his way around creating moods and shifting tempos, including a lot of warm, dreamy, gentle tones. And his vocal work along with Maggie Morris work well on many of these tunes, at times with dreamy harmonies, at other times counterpoint from I think Katherine's and others. And Matthew Hall's bass work is quite audible and adds a great smooth backbeat at times, along with providing a funky front rhythm (if I know wtf I'm trying to say, lol).
Anyway, I'm just going to add, having seen them live, and now playing about half of it while I'm writing this, there's not a song I don't enjoy. There was 1 or 2 tracks at the show last Saturday that did totally stand out, 1 being their closing piece, which seemed to be almost in multiple parts. I'm not sure if that was the nearly 6-minute opener "Something to Get You By" or I'm thinking more likely the 6th track "How Long Can I Wait?"
Hole mother, that tune is starting floor me like I believe it did on Saturday. Stephen's guitar phrases, are almost like a melancholy voice, lol. In fact I can say the 1st half of the record, that tune stands out the most, and it may on the whole record.
But, time is not on my side (I'm seeing Fitz and the Tantrums in a matter of hours at the Myth club, and we are getting our first snow/first example of Minnesota drivers going 15 mph in fear of it), so this is just an initial review/announcement. I hope Genders make a lot of new fans on their current tour opening for Built to Spill, and hopefully in December and in 2014, this record reaches a lot of people. It would be great to see them open for Warpaint (or the related Portland band Typhoon, except Katherine told me that might be impossible given her day job and Kyle from Typhoon's as well unfortunately) or someone like that as well as BTS, as they seem to have enough appeal to reach a lot of people.
edit: by the way, the guitar solo in "Technicolor Vision" is terrific!..omg the Trippy Peter Frampton-like wah-wah tones in the outro are unbelievable! Why have I never heard of this guy Stephen Leisy before?
"Secrets" is very cool, almost like Warpaint-meets-Kacica meets something totally Genders! The bass and guitar work could have maybe been written by that great Japanese band in fact (who I'm sure the members of Genders have never heard of, of course).

Unsure exactly when all this came out, but I know I was checking for awhile per their Facebook page and didn't see anything, but then today the video for Dreams of Cannibalism was shared. At any case, definitely a record to look forward to; but I am still un exposed to the videos below save for the one back from December.
But maybe this record could be a bit of a sleeper?..I hope so. August 20th should be a big day for their fans.

White Lighter - An Album by Typhoon from Matthew Ross on Vimeo.
So this is a promotional video for this upcoming album from the Portland, Oregon band Typhoon. A band by the way, it appears has 11 members and an additional 4-5 who also help out. I guess Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, back in the day, was not far from that large a band as well. But wow, that's a lot of musicians making the same music.
Anyway, that promo, doesn't really have any music, but some kid talking to his mom about the Sun and his dad. Maybe the subject matter of the album will involve the Sun? But, regardless, I got into them back in 2011 via their EP/Mini album A New Kind of House. I really enjoy a lot of that record and it's sort of subtle, chamber college prog of a kind. And to mention Margot again, I do see this band as maybe filling the void without Margot sounding or really being the same band, at least stylistically, they used to be.
When does this album come out? That hopefully will come out soon, and I'll be passing along in here of course.

The Barnum Meserve
I'm just going to share this, as I literally was just told about this band 30 minutes ago and am enjoying these songs quite a lot. This is a I guess relatively new UK band, who I just noticed have a description on their Facebook saying "dark theatrical" among other adjectives.
They sort of remind me of a few different bands, yet also sound distinct enough. I suppose a couple of names are Typhoon and O'Brother, but that's vague.
These songs appear to be for sale on their Soundcloud page, but they haven't released them on any lp or ep yet I guess.
edit: They have an EP titled Broken Window available to buy digitally on amazon.com HERE. I'm not clear when it was released, other than in 2012.

Forest Park - Forest Park [EP] (2012)
1/16/12 8:34AM
Edit: the WHOLE EP is there to stream. It should be available to download soon as well.
Awesome EP. The drumwork and the trumpet among other things really standout on that last track "Landscapes."
These guys are without question one of my favorite new discoveries for 2012 (maybe along with Northern Abbey). Granted, it's only 15 days into the year, but I'd be surprised if this doesn't end up on the 2012 Album Index.
Terrific EP. Maybe more material will come by the end of the year as well.

2. The Sun 06:06
3. Landscapes 08:13
1/13/12 2:13AM
um, wow. You know, when you hear a band you don't expect to be anything but derivative, and they are not? I just streamed this song from this project called Forest Park and totally love it! This is how Post-Rock should sound, or at least how the traditional "Post-Rock" sound works and doesn't get boring to me.
How did I hear about this? The Portland, OR band Typhoon posted a preview video to this project's new upcoming EP on their page. I think some of the members of Typhoon are involved with Forest Park.
Anyway, call me their newest fan. Really great stuff. Love the female vocal textures and trumpet especially.

Team Me - TBA (2011)
no time for lengthly details, but this Norweigan band's debut EP Team Me EP, came out earlier this year, and I've enjoyed a bit over the last few weeks, amongst a handful of good new bands to me (Typhoon, Gotye, The Minor Canon).
Their music is kind of a mix of pop, dreamy psych and textured rock. I guess when this full length comes out, that style might be more clear. They remind me a bit of Early Ghost and some other layered Pop bands from Europe.
I didn't expect a full-length this soon from them, but actually in some ways I'm not surprised, as often when an EP is released, it's just a fraction of the music that was written at that time.
Now will they become Hipster and will Hip4K grab onto them and fuck with how they are promoted? hopefully not.
