Erthlings - Bridges [1B] (2018)

Heard about this relatively new Australian all-female Psych/Rock band on the latest episode of Sound Opinions. 

I say *relatively* new because the 4 members of this band started playing together when they were 8 years old. And they are all 16 now I guess.

I guess the reason I'm sharing this is largely due to how their sound reminds me enough of Warpaint; and even say Black Belt Eagle Scout and Genders (Katherine Paul's music).

But this song/video "Bridges" is just their debut single. Dreamy and melodic enough to have my attention. I'm pretty curious what they do next. Debut EP and/or album maybe in 2019?

I mean if they have been playing together since 2010, I wonder if they have refined their sound and have songs that they have worked on for quite awhile, which may come out all the better given they may have been 1st written many years ago.

The official track list is below along with preorders and the cover art. Gotta say, the Cover Art is kind of blah. Nothing special. But if the music is good, the cover means very little to me typically. And this 1st song "New Song" is very catchy and addictive, so I can't really make issue with it too much.

And given "New Song" like I said, is really addictive and catchy, I do have optimism for this album. Their last record I never got fully into, but that single they released last year "No Way Out / I'll Start Believing" was a lot more my speed, so much so, it definitely re-energized my interest in Warpaint, so much so, I'm not all that surprised by how good this new single is.

Hopefully I feel the same about the rest of Heads Up, which comes out around the same time (and tour) as the new Local Natives album Sunlit Youth which I'm also equally excited about.

And the fact Local Natives and Warpaint are playing back-2-back nights the week after my wedding, the last week of September (which I have PTO already approved thankfully, lol)

They seem to be back. I can't help but wonder where was this kind of moody, rocking-out material on their snoozy S/T LP from 2014? this definitely holds optimism for their next record.

Trying to listen now, but unfortunately in replacing my modem yesterday (the desktop connection wasn't working), the new modem I received from XFinity appears to be having just as many if not more problems. I.e. this morning I'm unable to stream this track well  (or even check my email),.

But it is a 12+ minute jam of sorts. Sounds like some flute, percussion and textures emphasized. Hopefully when I'm able to finally listen to it without help from this brand new disfunctional broadband modem, I'll post more about it.

Interesting to note: This is the 2nd single from their upcoming record "You Don't Have To Be Afraid."

I met 2 of the members of this Winnipeg band at the Warpaint concert at First Ave like a month ago, I've been meaning to share something about them, but haven't gotten around to it until now.

They have a debut LP or EP? coming, likely this Summer. Stylstically, they sort of fall under the psych/humor poppy prog. I dunno. I have only heard a few clips, but I like what I hear.

I thought they had a bandcamp page with 1 track, but I'm failing to find it at the moment. I'll be sure to edit in if/when I find it.

update on the Tour Dates: they finally added a show in MINNEAPOLIS on Saturday March 29th! I wish I could have seen them at The Varsity Theater in March of 2011, but their driving in the Snow issues usurped that. I also got a ticket already. I have no clue if tickets went on sale last Friday, or not, but they are for sale on First Ave's Website already.

edit: yep, lol. I can't stand 87% of the tripe that they book there, I shouldn't have to follow their twitter posts religiously just to find this shit out. Blech, of well, better now than after the show may sell out (although it may not, as they are not quite the buzz band they were a few years ago it seems, despite this Calvin Klein ad with 2 million views, going back to late September ).

It bugs me that they may have gone on sale last week and I didn't realize it. That show, and as it turns out, BEND SINISTER at the Turf Club the VERY NEXT EVENING, lol.

Well, here it is finally. Like I posted the other day, the 1st single "Love Is to Die" is dreamy as people know Warpaint. Simple song titles.

Glad they aren't rushing it out at the end of the year.

And the fanboy in me couldn't pass up one of those 1st 1000 yellow vinyls + the stencil. Although I still would hope they would find a tour coming to Minnesota soon, and I would think they'll do a few North American tours to support this S/T sophomore LP of Warpaint's, and include at least 1 or more dates in Minnesota (and not have them miss due to snow/weather).

Because they totally stand out live as the videos and the 1 show I did see support.

But for now, this is great to look forward to (and hopefully get to listen to by the time it's available, lol).

The songs/tracklist I have heard some of, but I should try revisiting some of those tunes live to refresh my memory. I recall many of the unreleased songs they played live were like Love Is to Die. dreamy, methodical, which I do hope this album mixes it and varies more than just how that 1st single sounds.

Rough Trade is excited to announce the full details of Warpaint’s new self-titled album, set for release on 20th January 2014. ‘Warpaint’ is the follow-up to the LA four-piece’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘The Fool’ (2010).

The first single to be taken from ‘Warpaint’ is ‘Love Is To Die’, available to listen to in full here:

‘Warpaint’ was co-produced by Warpaint and Flood (PJ Harvey, Sigur Ros, New Order, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Foals), and mixed by Flood and Nigel Godrich (Radiohead). The album was conceived after some writing and recording sessions that took place in The Joshua Tree late last year. Here the band was joined by visionary director Chris Cunningham who has partnered with them for many of the album visuals including the cover. He has spent the past two years filming and photographing the band as they made ‘Warpaint’.

RIP Benjamin Curtis (School of Seven Bells/Secret Machines)

This I guess doesn't come as an enormous shock as the Facebook post below explains, he had been battling Cancer for quite awhile. But regardless, this is still rather sad.

I can say a few things about Benjamin Curtis. I saw School of Seven Bells play at the 7th Street Entry twice, once with Warpaint on October 13th, 2009. One of the more memorable and surreal concerts I've attended certainly in the last 5 years, if not ever. A show I attended almost entirely to see Warpaint, but I stayed to see SVIIB and frankly was floored by how acid-trippy and surreal their show was. And Benjamin's guitar textures/atmospheres was a HUGE part of that.

They came back the next year, playing at the 7th Street Entry again, on September 19, 2010. And they didn't include the slide visuals, and shortly after Claudia Deheza left the band (I recall later within said tour), but that show was still very memorable (Entry w/ that announcement).

I even recall talking to Benjamin after maybe both of those shows, telling him about my impressions of the shows and how I always wanted to get into the Secret Machines, but never could, but SVIIB were more my thing.

I also recall seeing something on Facebook, a few months back about his cancer. But I am not sure how long he had been battling it. It may have been like Earl Root, where he had it, but never really made it public, but was dealing with it for many years. I hope not though.

Curtis announced in late February 2013 that he had been diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma A benefit concert was held in New York in August 2013 and included performances by members of the Strokes and Interpol. Curtis passed away on December 29, 2013 at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center in New York.

Very sad, as he was a talented musician and I'm sure he had a lot more music and many other things he could do in the future :-[

Last night, Dec. 29th 2013, we lost our friend and brother Benjamin Curtis to his fight against cancer.

While we had hoped to delay this announcement until a more suitable time when his friends and family could feel better prepared and settled to greet any correspondences from folks attempting to reach out, unfortunately the news has prematurely leaked. So we felt it would be appropriate to at least offer an official acknowledgement from us, in light of all the fans who loved and supported Benjamin and his music. 

We kindly ask that his immediate family, friends & bandmates' privacy be respected during this time, and that instead, any inquires, well wishes, or notes-of-consolation be sent through School of Seven Bells’ management, where it can be shared with them at the suitable time. Genders - Get Lost (2013)

This is the debut full-length from new Portland, Oregon-based dreamy/textured/post-rock group Genders. As I posted recently, they include ex-Forest Park guitarist/vocalist Katherine Paul, who actually plays primarily drums for them and on this album I believe. And she also does some if not the majority of the vocals.

The release date is on December 8th, 2013. Yeah, a bit odd day/week/month for a new original-music full-length record, but so be it. They self-released it I guess, so they don't have to concern themselves with distribution and competition for when it can be shelved in stores, etc.

I am finally checking it out just now, although I don't likely have enough time to get through it all yet. (it's a minor miracle I'm able to listen to it yet anyway, with my no-music-at-work approach the last few months). But I am intrigued enough by this band and maybe just Katherine Paul as a musician/songwriter/singer, I want to make what little time I have to share it in here.

I would say the genre-blending of those styles I posted above kind of encapsulates Genders sound for the most part. I guess they do have a poppy/happy side like on the track "Golden State." (I can't help but wonder if the Forest Park track "Golden" is in anyway connected to it, but unlikely).

But I probably shouldn't forget to add, while Katherine Paul's drum work is very refined and stands out frequently on what I'm hearing here, the other members also excel in many ways. Guitarist Stephen Leisy knows his way around creating moods and shifting tempos, including a lot of warm, dreamy, gentle tones. And his vocal work along with Maggie Morris work well on many of these tunes, at times with dreamy harmonies, at other times counterpoint from I think Katherine's and others. And Matthew Hall's bass work is quite audible and adds a great smooth backbeat at times, along with providing a funky front rhythm (if I know wtf I'm trying to say, lol).


Anyway, I'm just going to add, having seen them live, and now playing about half of it while I'm writing this, there's not a song I don't enjoy. There was 1 or 2 tracks at the show last Saturday that did totally stand out, 1 being their closing piece, which seemed to be almost in multiple parts. I'm not sure if that was the nearly 6-minute opener "Something to Get You By" or I'm thinking more likely the 6th track "How Long Can I Wait?"

Hole mother, that tune is starting floor me like I believe it did on Saturday. Stephen's guitar phrases, are almost like a melancholy voice, lol. In fact I can say the 1st half of the record, that tune stands out the most, and it may on the whole record.

But, time is not on my side (I'm seeing Fitz and the Tantrums in a matter of hours at the Myth club, and we are getting our first snow/first example of Minnesota drivers going 15 mph in fear of it), so this is just an initial review/announcement.  I hope Genders make a lot of new fans on their current tour opening for Built to Spill, and hopefully in December and in 2014, this record reaches a lot of people. It would be great to see them open for Warpaint (or the related Portland band Typhoon, except Katherine told me that might be impossible given her day job and Kyle from Typhoon's as well unfortunately) or someone like that as well as BTS, as they seem to have enough appeal to reach a lot of people.

edit: by the way, the guitar solo in "Technicolor Vision" is terrific!..omg the Trippy Peter Frampton-like wah-wah tones in the outro are unbelievable! Why have I never heard of this guy Stephen Leisy before?

"Secrets" is very cool, almost like Warpaint-meets-Kacica meets something totally Genders! The bass and guitar work could have maybe been written by that great Japanese band in fact (who I'm sure the members of Genders have never heard of, of course).

Well they are in town tonight 11/16/13 playing at the Kitty Cat Klub with Aaron & the Sea, UMAMI and 1 other group. I probably could clarify 1 thing though: Katherine Paul, Genders Drummer/Vocalist may be the only member from Forest Park in Genders. For some reason I thought another 1 or 2 other members of FP were in Genders as well, but o well. But in FP she played guitar and sang, whereas in Genders she's a drummer and sings.

I dunno, if I am able to chat with her and the other members of Genders tonight, some of those details could be more clear to me. It does make me wonder a bit still on what the other Forest Park members are doing now (like I wonder about some of the ex-members of Margot & the Nuclear So & So's of course, whose fans introduced me to Typhoon to originally. Funny how these connections all come full circle/X-degrees of, etc, lol).

For those who may not be familiar with the Portland, Oregon-based band Forest Park I was totally blown away in 2012, and then included their debut EP rather high on my year-end list. And I think I did post something about their ending/demise/breakup. At least a couple of the members of that great yet maybe not highly committed group, were part of this group called Genders.

Now I recall 1st hearing about Forest Park per Typhoon's Facebook in 2012 I think, and came to believe 1 or 2 of the members of Typhoon were part of Forest Park. As it turned out, I was partially right, LIVE I guess. If I am remembering correctly, Alex Fitch, 1 of Typhoon's drummers played with Forest Park LIVE, but not on the EP.

edit: I spoke to Katherine tonight (11/16/13), and I guess Shannon Steele (violin) and Ryan McAlphin (trumpet) of Typhoon are on the FP EP as guests.

Anyway, I got to hang with many of the members of Typhoon at their show back in September at the Cedar Cultural Center and among the other Portland bands I started talking to them about, Forest Park came up and if I remember, Alex told me a lot about their situation and this band Genders.

I came to learn about Genders around the time of learning last year of Forest Park's breakup, and I even *liked* them on Facebook, but their music, from memory, didn't remind me all that much of FP or didn't do as much for me.

Well, but Alex I recall told me their newer stuff was more in the FP vein if I recall. So I just noticed Genders posted a new single on their Bandcamp earlier, and while it's not as layered or having the use of trumpet I loved in FP, it does have that dreamy post-rock style with the female vocals that I love.

If I recall, Alex may have mentioned they are looking to release a full-length soon; likely in 2014. They have from looking at their rateyourmusic.com recorded 3 Demos/EPs of sorts over the last couple of years. But this new single "Something to Get You By" (from the album Get Lost due out December 8th) maybe has more of my attention than some of the stuff I checked out way back when I 1st heard about them. The crescendo is tremendous at the end.

It kind of reminds me of Warpaint, which being highly original or not, if the songwriting is good to me I often don't care.

Sounds like some from The Fool, slow, methodical, meditative, and the Warpaint-dreaminess...but that record varied enough, and some of the live tracks, I suspect their upcoming record won't sound only like this.




10/7/13 4:50PM This apparently is a teaser for a documentary film titled "Love Is To Die." How that connects/related to their upcoming record, only can be presumed in some direct or indirect way. But it hopefully will be soon. It's a bit like the new Mew record. They are sharing things they are busy with at least, but the actual record's information is still pending both on what it is, and even when exactly it'll be coming.

Warpaint - New Songs Live

These videos were taken as the videos show, at their 2 shows on the Coachella cruise back on December 22nd/23rd 2012. Not the best quality, but listenable enough.

The sound seems naturally more mystical and slower like the work off The Fool (less than Exquisite Corpse EP). It's also interesting how they are not using 2 guitars on them. Perhaps the new record will have less guitar and more vocal layers or keys?

I guess they have been and are still? in the studio recording their sophomore LP. It wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being a Fall release, but hopefully it'll be released in 2013.

The titles on these songs are possibly just *working* titles, as often live versions can be.

Well, like the Karnivool videos below, this is another Youtube video, with suspect quality. Although it sounds better than those 2 Karnivool videos, it's still a little hard to gauge how this song may be ultimately.

But, as a Warpaint fan like many, it's worth checking out.

Warpaint - Rough Trade Sessions

Here's some high resolution videos from sessions they did, I imagine recently (They were at the Reading Festival there, was only a few weeks ago), with Rough Trade in the UK. These remind me a lot of those "Live From Abbey Road" that Sundance Channel has aired, save for the little bio/discussion by the band between songs.











My guess is these were made in large part to promote The Fool: Deluxe Edition which is being released next Monday, September 26th in the UK on Rough Trade. It can be pre-ordered here

Warpaint - Jubilee (and Composure) @ Reading 2011

Well, nice video quality, and of course there's a boatload of live videos of Warpaint on Youtube, but not playing the unreleased track "Jubilee" as they did there recently. Good tune, and one that was being worked on but never finished for The Fool. Although I have heard the demo, it's been awhile. But the song itself isn't a *new* song in the sense it's newly written (post-The Fool), but it's definitely a new, and the final arrangement presumably. Whether it's released on their next LP, or as a single, or EP, etc remains to be seen. I don't believe it's going to be included on the "deluxe" edition of The Fool coming in a few weeks, as it wasn't listed anywhere, plus odds are they have not recorded this arrangement in the studio yet anyway. Also here's one of many great live versions of "Elephants" I just was streaming now. That along with some other videos from the Reading festival are on Youtube. And like I said, the video quality is as much a reason to check them out. Especially given the drought it's been for me to see them with the 1 show they scheduled here in Minneapolis getting canceled due to their difficulty with the Snow last March on the day of their show.

Eight years ago we decided to be a band. Tonight we decided to stop. Whether you have been with us since the Divine Cup days in Rockford, IL or you heard us for the first time tonight, thank you. With every ounce of our four hearts, thank you. You have been the reason we were The Felix Culpa and each one of you were with us all along. For those of us in this band, it has been a life changing experience that profoundly shaped who we are as people, but seasons change and songs end. Now, we humbly ask you to be with us one last time as we celebrate the music, friendship and memories that were made along the way in a final performance in Chicago. We'll let you know the details as soon as they are available. Until then, chin up. No tears. Only from endings can new beginnings be born.

God I feel terrible in some ways about reading this. Not only are they a band I have gotten into recently with their album from 2010 Sever Your Roots, and with Pure Reason Revolution's announcement just yesterday. But I owe them/others/myself a review of Sever Your Roots still. Plus I talked to 1 of the members whom I'm blanking on at this time, I talked to and told him about this blog. And he was genuinely interested. But I mentioned to him about As Tall As Lions and band breakups and things, and how I hope they don't.

WTF..that's almost like when I talked to 1 of the twins from School of Seven Bells about Warpaint and the industry last year; she then goes ahead and leaves the band in the middle of the tour.

Do I curse these bands/people? or is it pure coincidence? I would think I have NOTHING to do with it, but somehow, in the back of my mind, I can't help but wonder.

Fuck I'm sorry :(. But also at some point, I am going to expect band after band to breakup. It's going to happen every month probably. I really hope it's for the best.

Warpaint - The Fool [Deluxe] (2011)

The track is mixed by Pulp bassist Steve Mackey and is a complete re-working of the original version from the band's debut EP Exquisite Corpse, produced by John Frusciante (ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers).

This new version of 'Billie Holiday' will appear on the band's deluxe album (also out on 19th Sept). The album consists of their current album The Fool, Exquisite Corpse and various remixes.

why did they have to in-effect EDIT and (what sounds like poorly) REMIX Billie Holiday? lol. Who is this Steve Mackey and what gave him the brilliant idea to do this? a friend of the bands? as that description says, he plays for the band Pulp. Yeah, I'm sure they do a lot of mixing of mellotrons in that band, lol.

This "deluxe" edition, I probably will pick up, but it reeks of another case of a record label trying to Milk something good until it becomes overdone. Something special, becomes less special.

Sometimes, it's best to just to leave things alone *shrug*
