Kevin Gilbert (+Sheryl Crow) with Joyce

I just put this on Joyce's memoirs Substack here

This is a follow up to this little (fictional) thing I wrote a few months ago and passed along last Thursday

Sometime in the late Summer/Early Fall of 2004, I bought and heard the Toy Matinee CD, which was one of the late Kevin Gilbert’s bands. It kind of changed my life or at least introduced me to who would become my favorite musician ever.

So, when I met Joyce in 2011, at KFAI radio, we talked about our taste in music and our favorite bands and musicians. Joyce loved The Monkees and maybe even more, Michael Nesmith. So, in talking about music and getting to know each other, we made mix tapes which I believe I went over in this video on YouTube soon after she passed.

And I included “Last Plane Out” I believe on 1 of those mixes. And I later burned or maybe even lent her a copy of the Toy Matinee cd. I myself ended up listening to some Monkees and Michael Nesmith not long after that as well. Especially before we saw The Monkees in July 2011.

Well Joyce wasn’t all that grabbed by Toy Matinee. She didn’t hate it, but she wasn’t loving it enough to go back to it. So, I kind of put on hold trying to get her into Kevin Gilbert’s music for a while. Eventually I ended playing her a song titled “Finally Over You” which was only recently released on Kevin Gilbert’s estate compilation “Nuts” in 2009.

She did really dig “Finally Over You,” and came to play it occasionally on YouTube (it-was, but sadly, now is not available to stream on there or anywhere online I don’t believe).

Kevin Gilbert’s estate started releasing a lot of limited printed items more or less in 2009 and have continued through just this past Friday. A lot of unreleased recordings from his bands and solo work. In the time I was with Joyce, they came out periodically. I would estimate maybe around 20 releases, some re-released from out-of-print titles, to covers, to live recordings, to demos, etc.

I was buying them all of course, and I would almost always put them on, often in the car, so Joyce would hear them. She got to know Kevin’s voice among other things. But other than the 1 tune “Finally Over You” she never gravitated to any other tracks really.

Even when Kevin and his live Toy Matinee bandmate Marc Bonilla covered The Monkees “Pleasant Valley Sunday” on the radio once (KLOS). Kevin said though “no ba ba ba’s” lol.

Also many things would come up that I got to point out to her, with the connections Kevin Gilbert had to many musicians she enjoyed. And she rolled her eyes at me, and I couldn’t help but grin and laugh at her.

-Sheryl Crow was Kevin Gilbert’s girlfriend. Sheryl played on the live touring version of Toy Matinee in and is on “Live at the Roxy” on keys and background vocals in fact. Joyce was a pretty big Sheryl Crow fan. She enjoyed her 90’s music especially including the “Tuesday Night Music Club” album, which was in effect her debut album (she had a previous album that was and may still be unreleased though).

Much of the music on Tuesday Night Music Club album was actually written by Kevin Gilbert and his co-musicians who would jam on Tuesday nights, hence the name. Kevin was still dating Sheryl at the time. Joyce however, was not aware of who Kevin Gilbert was until meeting me, including him and the others on that album really.

-Joyce enjoyed Moulin Rouge! likely driven by one of her Hollywood guys Ewan McGregor’s role. On the soundtrack, the tune “Come What May” is included, which was composed by Tuesday Night Music Club members David Baerwald (of David + David fame also), and Kevin Gilbert.

-Christian Nesmith whose one of Michael Nesmith’s sons, is a musician himself and a progressive rock fan. Citing bands like Yes and Rush among others. He even has a close relationship with a band I love, Joyce only heard about through me, in King’s X. Christian Nesmith along with his wife Circe Link, have done many covers on YouTube (and TikTok more recently), which include two Kevin Gilbert tunes. “Parade” and “Suite Fugue” which are both from Kevin Gilbert’s posthumously released rock opera “The Shaming of the True.”

That is all from the son of Michael Nesmith, her favorite musician ever, and at 1-time, live member of The Monkees and Michael Nesmith reunited “First National Band.” And who played-on and produced Monkees work in the last decade (2016’s “Good Times” and 2018’s “Christmas Party” along with Micky Dolenz releases “Dolenz Sings Nesmith” and “Dolenz Sings R.E.M.”).

-Neil Peart, the late drummer from Rush, cited a few times loving The Monkees. I am a huge Rush fan, but Joyce never got into them. But she found it odd and ironic how the drummer for one of my favorite bands loved her favorite band.

-Kevin Gilbert engineered “Black or White” from Michael Jackson and worked with Patrick Leonard of course as part of Toy Matinee. Patrick Leonard being the producer of several of Madonna’s biggest albums in the 80’s. Joyce was a rather big fan of both MJ and Madonna

To quote my friend John “Sometimes my people are your people.” But Joyce dismissed that idea, kind of not wanting to accept it if not in disbelief. Joyce did not like progressive rock. “It hurts my brain!” "You can't dance to it" and “It has no soul,” but as it turns out, some of her taste aligned with some of it oddly. Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates who Joyce loved) worked with Robert Fripp of King Crimson on one of his solo albums, etc.

Even Michael Nesmith himself made the concept album The Prison, and The Monkees did the experimental film Head, which includes a cameo from progressive musician and friend of Michael Nesmith’s, Frank Zappa (who also appeared on a Monkees episode with Nez)

Even the 2nd time we saw one of the modern bands she enjoyed, The Bird & the Bee (which was just half the band, Inara George per the other half, Greg Kurstin didn’t and may still not actually tour live), there was a group of my fellow progressive rock fans at the show. Joyce came to roll her eyes thinking the “Prog fans” enjoyed her band and music, lol. But it happened, or happens, much to her dismay and lack of ability to understand why.

As the years went by, Joyce would make comments about Kevin Gilbert to me. “Thanks Kevin, I didn’t need to know that” or “Sorry Kevin” or “Oh, it’s Kevin.”

One was “he’s not hot.” She said something to the effect just like a year ago. “He’s not bad looking, but he’s like Where’s Waldo.” “He looks clean and nice, and is a talented musician and singer, but he doesn’t have that striking, hot sexy look that many women can be drawn to” “He didn’t make it big, and it seems part of it was because his looks.” “Like, he’s not bad looking, but he’s doesn’t really have it like George Michael.”

Which oddly enough about George Michael, Kevin Gilbert once said about his tune “Careless Whisper” and the lyric “guilty feet have got no rhythm” was genius. I don’t recall if/when I mentioned that to Joyce, what her reaction was. It likely was just “yeah, thanks Kevin.”

The commentary that I passed along to her at times with Sheryl Crow and Kevin Gilbert fans struck a bit of a nerve with her. She came to look down on some of them; although not me, mind you. I never was into Sheryl Crow’s music really but did not beat a dead horse bringing up the fact he died after they broke up. How he took his own life, and fans blamed Sheryl Crow for it. The sort of rivalry they had a bit after that and her album won Grammys, and it took some work to have all the credits being given to Kevin and the members of the Tuesday Night Music Club.

The Kevin Gilbert fans have historically made comments for years online, and even some articles written. Joyce would give me comebacks to them, talking about how many of the Kevin Gilbert fans were super bitter and misguided in their blaming her, etc. Which I didn’t and can’t disagree with her about. What happened to Kevin Gilbert and his reaching and failing to fully “make it big” in the music industry and even Hollywood to a degree, had much to do with his own personality sadly.

Sheryl had the quote in 1 of the stories I’ll never forget “Kevin was one of the most self-destructive people I’ve ever met” which came out in an article written not long after he died, and Sheryl may have been bitter about things. How some people within his circles viewed her. I guess at his funeral perhaps. I’m not sure. I do suspect now so many decades later even, Sheryl wouldn’t necessarily use those words or may not quite feel that way about him still.

She did mention and include a little about Kevin in the documentary, Sheryl, about her a couple of years ago. Although Sheryl Crow I think had creative control of it, so the amount of content about Kevin Gilbert in it was maybe limited, if for no other reason, but to not create any tension among his fans (time of course as well). I see that, per it’s sort of damned if you do and damned if you don’t. If she had talked in-depth about Kevin, it would raise potential controversy. But when she did not talk much about him, of course many Kevin Gilbert fans wonder why, and think she could still be bitter, etc. It was probably best to limit it, and avoid as much content about a potentially sensitive topic still.

Kevin Gilbert would have turned 59 this past week on November 20th. He will always be a favorite of mine, but also a musician who Joyce had mixed feelings about, despite my longtime obsession with his music. My interest to want more people to hear and hopefully discover his music.

There is this appearance on Used Bin Radio in 2011 with Joyce and I where the hosts Brad and Joe bring up Sheryl Crow and Joyce’s take on her music and Kevin Gilbert’s among others. I introduce her at the 12:45 mark, and she is on from the 13:19-24:48 mark.

There’s also this recent opinionated video that sums up a lot of it, although the creator doesn’t consider anything over the last 29 years with Sheryl, although some of the comments do.

In The Shaming of the True and on a live record “Live at the Troubadour,” Kevin Gilbert references and alludes to Sheryl on songs like “Fun” (“Sheryl’s in the kitchen with the LA Lakers”) and “Miss Broadway.” It didn’t occur to me until a few years ago, “Fun” is blatantly a reference to the lyric on “All I Wanna Do” “All I Want to do is have some fun.” Joyce though, never heard either, which probably was for the best. I generally made and kept the peace with this whole situation. Much like avoiding questioning her lack of appreciation or even respect in some ways for The Beatles, bringing up conflict with Sheryl and Kevin was not somewhere I went with Joyce per I knew she would give me an earful, and the end result wouldn’t be beneficial.

Joyce was always like that with me. She didn’t pull many if any punches, regardless that it was about someone or something I love (Beavis and Butthead in recent years as well). Despite my hoping to connect with her with things I love, it often didn’t work. I was not happy for that, but I still respected that about her.

Joyce's taste in Music and meeting at KFAI

How Joyce and I met at KFAI

Joyce's taste in music (nearly 40 minutes). I did add on the last few minutes about her favorite Monkees album. I'm not certain, but she would go to bat frequently for Present, so that is why I suspect she'd pick it as her favorite. Although she did say to me at 1 point, Good Times is the best Monkees album start to finish.

I of course intend to try and show her collection, so some of this stuff will be elaborated on. I failed to mention much detail about Michael Nesmith, but she did do that Top 5 songs video when Nez died.
I also didn't talk a ton about her concert history. A little. I may consider filming another video just about those. I may try and go through and get some estimate of bands/artists I knew or she told me she saw live.

The Monkees ROCK HALL SNUB and REDDIT

Biggest Rock & Roll Hall of Fame snubs

it seemed to be a pretty good twitter alternative the last few months especially, and I joined the Rock Hall subreddit around the time of the nominations were announced.

But, I make 1 comment about how The Monkees are more FAMOUS than every name included there, and 3 or 4 replied to me proved to be a fine waste of time.

The people who replied clearly are not well informed on The Monkees history and importance. I would guess they are younger and less versed in just pop music that is from The Monkees era or even just pre-90's. Or maybe more so, just not well versed how far reaching and KNOWN The Monkees are among musicians and pop-culture.

But we've seen this how many times?.."they were just a TV Show..fake band..they didn't write their own songs or play on their albums"

ignorantly uninformed bullshit from countless people.

odd how the 1 reply stated The White Stripes and Outkast, the Nomination Committee member Alan Light, who was just on that podcast Who Cares About the Rock Hall? stated those were the 2 names he brings to the committee every year.

Is the user on Reddit, Alan Light?..doubt it, but that's odd. as a side note, given how long he's been on the NomCom and what I got from listening to about 1/2 of that podcast, he needs to be removed per Term Limits.

but this video on YouTube discusses this very point about The Monkees influence, which objectively cannot be argued. Those people on Reddit are plain and simply ignorant and uninformed. And while I don't know if there's value in trying to argue with them any more at this point, it does reiterate a larger issue, even beyond just their egregious lack of recognition in the Rock Hall. It illustrates a huge problem with the culture and their ignorance of The Monkees in the history of music and pop culture, the fact they are not even known beyond the show and not thought of to be considered for the Rock Hall.

They don't deserve to be Leif Erickson..but the way history has gone, in 10 or 50+ years, they sadly could be undeservedly. The Rock Hall might not fully change that, but it could help to some degree.

And it would be funny, if they were put in even for Musical Excellence..some crow might be consumed by those uninformed redditors.

Rules

3. Please be civil if discussing who ought to be inducted as to who is already.

Coming from a lunatic who says "THE MONKEES ARE MORE FAMOUS THAN THE LISTED ARTISTS". Gosh no wonder why your fandom is so insanely stupid.

the rules seem to be followed well here, lol (regardless of the fact it's coming from the Creator of the topic).

I decided to instead of replying, to report that. I would question whether much happens given 2 of the other replies were from the Moderators. But this person clearly resorted to name calling and personally attacking me.

But if I had to guess, 1 of 3 things will occur.
-it'll get ignored
-1 of the moderators will contact me about it, unsure how supportive they'll be
-they will remove me from the subreddit, which will speak to how poorly run it is, but at the same time, it would probably be best to avoid anyway.

edit: it looks like the comment was removed. Which is nice, however, the damage is kind of done, so I don't fathom chiming in anytime soon beyond someone bringing up Marillion or Dream Theater, lol.

Also, the 3 links I replied with were hardly "old" from 2021, 2020 and 2018, lol. There are newer posts, discussions, and articles than those, I just was providing a few examples.

2024 Rock Hall Nominations - Take/Rant

Given my lacking the ability to film videos for YouTube right now per the C-word in my house, impacting that.

I guess I'll offer up some rants about the 2024 Rock Hall Nominations:

2024 Rock Hall Nominations:

billboard.com/music…A Tribe Called Quest Jane's Addiction Ozzy Osbourne Cher Lenny Kravitz Sade Mary J. Blije Eric B. & Rakim Kool & the Gang Sinead O'Connor Peter Frampton Dave Mathews Band Foreigner Oasis Mariah CareyJan Wenner is gone, yet still no Monkees.WTF."Murphy Level Bullshit"

https://twitter.com/Super70sSports/status/1704892123479449994

No Monkees..broken record of course. Wenner's supposed absence didn't seem to mean
much if anything at this point.

Jane's Addiction I like. Three Days is prog for what it's worth. They were nominated a few years ago but didn't get in. I will be pretty surprised if they do get in, but if they do, I would happy.

Mariah, Sade, Lenny and even Kool & the Gang are all names my wife appreciates to different degrees.
Mary J Blije as well per she did a duet with George Michael among other things.

If any of them get in, I  will be happy to see it. Mariah I kind of think is the most likely. Kool & the Gang has been eligible for decades..pretty egregious..but there's many terrible cases of that like every year and there's a massive list of names who still haven't been nominated either as well (besides of course The Monkees).

Cher, Dave Mathews,..Frampton..Ozzy.

If Ozzy gets in, it is nice, but it is delaying other Metal bands from getting in. Maiden of course. Megadeth, Scorpions, Motorhead among some others. Even extend it out to Hard Rock.

Oasis I honestly couldn't care less about. I don't loathe them as much as some of the other 90's bands, but the 2 brothers have very unlike-able reputations.

Foreigner?..eh, Styx, Boston, or TOTO even ...or even say SUPERTRAMP would mean a ton more to people. I don't maybe mind them. And REO Speedwagon or someone like Loverboy (or Air Supply?) in the sort of Corporate Pop/Rock.

My wife would be all for REO or Air Supply, and by comparison to Styx and Boston, she actually kind of like Foreigner. No care for the fact Ian McDonald of King Crimson was a founding member, lol.

But I guess Foreigner was blackballed by Wenner and maybe others years back, But the same has been said about both The Guess Who and Toto. So, why were Foreigner chosen instead of The Guess Who or Toto? Wenner hated all of them (Toto due Toto refused to be on the Rolling Stone cover I guess).

Cher?..she has said she would refuse induction. Dolly Parton said the same thing, but changed her mind, lol. Cher's been eligible since 1990, lol. I can take or leave her music. It's fine I guess if she gets in. I suppose someone like Barbara Streisand or Olivia Newton-John needs to be considered if Cher gets in.

But what about Phil Collins?..when they started putting pop acts in about 12 years ago with Madonna..Whitney Janet and George Michael..Phil Collins has the resume to belong in just like those others. I know he's already in with Genesis, but they've had several other 2+ inductions before.

Once filming again on YouTube is possible again, I'll try and follow-up/rehash some of this on camera.

A bunch of shorter videos I made recently. Nothing exceptional although it just struck me how I forgot to show the Set List I got at the Fates Warning show. O well, maybe in another video.

The Monkees Present: The Mike & Micky Show @ Mystic Lake Casino 3/14/19

RUSHED REVIEW (PER LACK OF TIME OF COURSE).

Great show, and very sad knowing it likely is the last time a Monkees show of some kind will happen here. Micky likely will be back, but Mike? kind of doubt it per his health/age. He may just go on and do occasional First National Band shows, and maybe only in CA or the West Coast.

The wife is coming to terms with it too. Some 31 years after being a fan, this might have been it.

The show itself was very good. Definitely better than the show last Summer in Chicago.

They had a guy (Probyn Gregory) playing multiple instruments including Trumpet which ADDED FRANKLY A LOT.

More details to add later perhaps (maybe how it reminded me of the final 2015 Rush show I saw, etc).

edit:

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, people playing musical instruments and people on stage
just add some more comments, it was an epic show, much like the show last Summer in Chicago. 2+ Hours. But it didn't seem so long

The Peter tribute was nice. They didn't play Can You Dig It? but while Micky sings lead on that one, it is so much Peter. At some point, it would be nice to have someone do a tribute/cover to Peter with it live.

Shades of Gray maybe as well.

The acoustic section was great. Nez and Christian both played 12-strings.

This was the 5th Monkees and 11th Monkees-related concert I've seen in a little less than 8 years for me (also I could include the 1 Davy Jones show at the Taste of Minnesota in 2006, which my wife was at as well, little did I know at the time, lol).

Which that is quite a lot, but it pales in comparison to my wife's Monkees concert attendance history. I would guess she's probably doubled that number or more, although at least the Nesmith shows, I saw all with her (and told her after she was convinced she'd never see him, that with that mentality, she probably won't, but if she just hoped for it to happen, it might. And it did. She and I saw him 8 times since that 1st time in November 2012.

But it is odd in that this show feels like the end of an era for her and myself by extension.

The Rush show I saw at XCel Energy Center in St.Paul in 2015 (the "R40 Tour") I kind of knew was the last time. I saw Rush 5 or 6 times previously, and was okay with it, per when I 1st became a fan in 1991/1992, I was kind of down about their age and time left, much like Led Zeppelin or even now Kevin Gilbert. Seeing them live may not last.

Image may contain: 2 people, people on stage, people playing musical instruments, guitar and concert

And my wife felt similarly, and sadly, never got to see all 4 together. The 1996 Justus tour was her best shot, but Mike didn't stick with them on the US leg.

And other than the Euro leg of that 1996 tour, along with a few reunion shows in the 80's only in LA, the 4 Monkees did not play together live other than the initial tours in the 60's.

It's too bad, but that is kind in the past and known, just like how Kevin Gilbert and Jeff Buckley both played in Minnesota among others, and I wasn't a fan at the time, etc.

Some other things to remember: I saw Christian and Circe both before the show walking out the Buffet we were entering for dinner. That made my night at least. I mentioned to Christian it must have been cool to meet MSNBC's Brian Williams recently, and also we found out Christian and Michael Sherwood are working on a follow-up to Groovy Lemon Pie which having recently discovered liking a lot of.

That and seeing some of the regular faces and meeting up with my wife's longtime Monkees-fan friend from Wisconsin, maybe for the final time at a Monkees show was both nice but felt quite sad and end-of-an-era as she felt.

We probably will see him again, whether he comes in, or we end up in Oshkosh, WI where he is from (or in Chicago like last Summer). He doesn't drive, so he has limits, but if the Monkees/Monkees related shows dry up after this tour, and then at some point Nez does a show at The Troubadour again, maybe that will motivate us and him to make the trek.

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, people on stage, people playing musical instruments and guitar

I mean for many of the casual fans there, this was kind of just another show, but for my wife and some her Monkees lifers, this will not be forgotten for a long time. And maybe the same will happen with some others for myself and her with artists retiring (or they sadly die). But for her, this is HER band, music and FAMILY in a way.

And like the Rush show in 2015, this show was quite good, and 1 to like how it ended.

It also is odd how a friend of hers who she worked with at Barnes and Noble many years back, passed away yesterday. Eerie with her friend/former co-worker from the 2000's dies and the last Monkees show happens on the same day. And it was Pie/Pye Day, lol.

I guess 3/14/2019 will be one of the memorable days to think back on about.

Also:

Chris Riemenschneider's review from the Strib

The 1st line of the review:
The last time the surviving Monkees came to Minnesota in 2012, they arrived just eight months past the death of one of their own, Davy Jones.

Yeah, I probably know more about the Monkees history than him, lol.

I mean just in the fact he claims the last time they came here was 2012, even though I'm pretty sure he or Bream reviewed the 2014 Minnesota Zoo show. Nice fucking research, lol.

So was he meaning the last time IMMEDIATELY AFTER a MEMBER OF THE MONKEES DIED, a Monkees concert was held? if so, he at least could have worded it better, lol.

And if he was trying to say the last time a Monkees concert happened in Minnesota (regardless of how long after a member died, and regardless of right-after/the 1st show following a Death), then he is SPOT ON WRONG and didn't do his research.

I mean look at this photo of me and The Wife at the Fucking Minnesota Zoo in 2014 (not 2012 or 2011), LOL
