2015-2016 Albums of the Year Videos (4 parts)

4 parts, approximately 52 minutes, etc.

Yeah a bit of a babble fest, but 33 albums included.

I probably should have just done a top 20, but so be it. I suppose it was better to have made multiple parts rather than 1 long ass video.

2016 Celebrity Deaths

I went through Wikipedia list a couple of weeks ago. There's probably a few I'm missing.
But this list, while it's not short, compared to other 12-month cycles per the Christian Calendar, doesn't look dramatically high compared to other years really.
I guess it's the big names, especially in the music industry that stand out.
The Grammy Memorials..I would hope they include a decent chunk of time to, more than other years. Prince and Bowie alone I suppose (I think Bowie died after the Grammys last year).
Will Greg Lake be included? I should hope so.
I'll update this list if any more happen (hopefully no more will, although the Glen Campbell time may be limited given his condition).

Rest in Peace GREG LAKE

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-38251936

Sucks Sucks Sucks!

It's just calendar year, but 2/3 of ELP now gone. Had you told me that a year ago, I would have thought you were crazy.

I saw him just a couple of years ago at The Varsity Theater. Very intimate, lots of crowd interaction, etc. He seemed well.

I had no clue he had cancer.

I also will never forget seeing ELP with Deep Purple and Dream Theater and Grand Casino Hinckley the summer of 1998 (August?).

Man o man..this 1 hurts. I plan to post a list of celeb deaths for 2016, to remember but also illustrate while it seems like a ton, it's not been all that different than other Christian Calendar years.

How much mention this will get with the hipsters? oddly enough, p4k ran something and The Needle Drop retweeted the BBC link above. Jon Bream, Chris Riemenschneider, etc..probably couldn't care less.

Granted, the hipsters like Crimson for some reason. ELP tho? why when (hopefully a LONG TIME FROM NOW) Carl Palmer goes, I question how much mention it'll get.

Klimt 1918 - Sentimentale Jugend (2016-2017)

12/6/16 12:02PM
My preorder arrived yesterday. Very nice package with a finely crafted hardbound book.

Nice white Tee also, though given it was shipped in packaging, I need to wash it 1st.

That is the good news.

The not so good news is, I've checked out a little over half of this album and am struggling with much of it.

The band have sort of gone the way of Tangled Thoughts of Leaving; apparently in love with noise/noise-rock/noise-guitars. And LAYERS.

This is like a Meshuggah album in some ways. VERY DENSE.

Or similar to The Red Paintings last album.

I'm worried that despite some nice melodic and harmonic moments, and ambient passages, etc..the dominant sound is the dense, almost Metalgazey style. And the vocals even are more for affect of another layer, rather than a lead melody/sound like most if not all their previous music.

This is almost like their tribute to My Bloody Valentine or something.

Or Sun O))), Earth, Boris in the wall of sound(noise).

But I suppose the artwork fits that mood.

I will give it some more time as my wallet and history with this band owes it that much, but I worry that this could go down as a band whose ambition and direction of their ambition (and producer they used) changed in a way that I struggle to even recognize what I loved about them in the past.

Now, perhaps this could be a 1-off, and they may follow it up in a few years with an album sonically at least, if not stylistically, that resembles Dopoguerra or any of their others. But then again, they may not and feel this is their muse now and in the future, much like I look at Tangled Thoughts of Leaving now.

Granted, there are cases of comebacks/returns like Umphrey's McGee, East of the Wall and just this past year, Long Distance Calling and Avenged Sevenfold, so who knows.

I should add, I likely will include/show my copy in a video soon (the 2016-2017 preview likely).

11/12/16 12:10PM

1st new track "Comandante" which is the 2nd track on "Sentimentale" the 1st disc.

Enjoying it. Gonna preorder now that some of my bills have cleared.

10/16/16 3:50PM

Finally the details, release date being December 2nd, track list, artwork and just with the title now being shortened to
Sentimentale Jugend.
I am naturally excited for this, and am awfully curious per the description, tracklist, etc.

I do wonder a bit given it is so much, how addictive it may get. But some double albums still demand the headphone in recent years like Sun and Moon from Timbre or The River Empires of course.

US Release? unlikely right away, but I very well may just have to import it per Prophecy or another source.

Preorders per Prophecy Records

The new Klimt 1918 album "Sentimentale Jugend" as 2CD hardcover book plus a Klimt 1918 shirt for a special price.
One has to be a decided connoisseur of alternative music culture to associate the title "Sentimentale Jugend" (sentimental youth) with the short-lived experimental noise act of the same name, founded by Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten) and his then significant other Christiane Flescherinow (also known as Christiane F. from the bestselling non-fiction book "We Children From Bahnhof Zoo") in the early 1980s. However, it is for a reason that Italian indie rock flagship Klimt 1918 names its latest double album after this footnote of pop history, namely a conscious hint at the underlying mood of the songs. "Sentimentale Jugend" captures West Berlin in its pulsating, nihilistic glory during the late 70s - just as David Bowie did with his Berlin Trilogy of the albums "Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger" - and processes notions from Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's award-winning movie "The Lives Of Others", be it the foggy winter atmosphere in East Berlin during the early 80s or the female protagonist's melancholy.
Eight years after the 'Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation' "Just In Case We'll Never Meet Again", Klimt 1918 stay true to their sound, alternating the energetic with the wistful by means of shoegaze, indie and new wave from the 80s and 90s, yet for the first time, the sonic spectrum gets expanded with the signature guitar effects and drum rhythms of 50s and 60s pop. Ultimately, "Sentimentale Jugend" harks back to such diverse artists as The Chameleons, iLikeTrains, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Everly Brothers, Sigur Rós or Dead Can Dance and may be suitably tagged "dirty and noisy three beats dream pop".
"Sentimentale Jugend" consists of the separate albums "Sentimentale" (9 songs, 54 minutes) and "Jugend" (10 songs, 53 minutes), the former being the more "serene" chapter with its slow and partially long tracks, whereas the latter with its faster tunes is the more driving counterpart. Both albums are also available together with the exclusive bonus track "Lycans" as a high-quality book edition (hardcover, 18x18 cm, 48 pages).
Release date: 02.12.2016
Available editions:
- 2CD hardcover book (48 pages, 18x18 cm), containing both albums plus bonus track (700 copies)
- CD Digisleeve "Sentimentale"
- CD Digisleeve "Jugend"

7/20/16 1:54PM
Fantastic news! It's been so long since Just In Case We'll Never Meet Again...Double album? Feast or Famine perhaps, but I'm optimistic given it's been so long, the songs could have been refined and tweaked a lot, and there will be more of them.

Perhaps a concept album as well?..will bump with more info obviously.

Facebook post

Happy 10 Year Anniversary 2006-2016

edit: short video posted below

It is today.

As I've mentioned, I have a big entry or entries planned, that I'm working on, but may not actually be published until later this week. We'll see.

But in the mean time, it's worth just posting just a reminder on the actual day, today.

I can add though, the blog was launched on December 4th. I didn't start posting in it until maybe December 5th or 6th (I'd have to look it up).

edit: my 1st post wasn't until December 21st, 2006, lol. The original creator Rob posted on the 4th and 4th again and then on the 6th and 7th.

But anyway, Happy 10 years. Time flies of course. Or it's been a great 10 years of wasting my life away, lol.

2015-2016 Albums Countdown

Fnm aoty.jpg
November 1st 2015- October 31st, 2016
Albums countdown.

I'm doing kind of AOTY express in some ways in the interest of time as I have an agenda for a couple of other pressing things.

In other words, Blurbs? not sure how much will be added initially, but maybe with some edits which seems a bit sacrilege; but how often do you have a massive anniversary entry looming as well?

I guess my goal is to do an update to some of these with blurbs, maybe by say New Years? And with the assumption the anniversary entry(s) are done and the 2016-2017 preview as well.

I suppose another thing to add, a Video of the years countdown should happen as well (and a video for the others of course), but that should include some comments about the top records, etc.

But without anymore further ado for now, the list is below.

2015-2016 was an unusual year in that I of course had my wedding occupying a lot of my time, and my job duties along with desire to listen to podcasts and youtube audio reviews took priority over new (or otherwise) album listening.

The crop of records though was pretty good. I guess as of right now I see this past year as being a pretty good year in terms of depth, in terms of progressive stuff. Progressive Metal and Metal in general. And the top records are all among the best albums of the artists career. However, none of them I would call their best I suppose aside from maybe Textures and Meniscus.

But the records that came out were certainly pretty unique (Cloud Cult namely), and some were nice returns to form like Fates Warning, Watchtower, Avenged Sevenfold and Warpaint.

Some nice debuts as well from The Woods Brothers, Ideology, Rare Futures and Painted in Exile. Although the Painted in Exile album I can't say totally lived up to my hopes, waiting for so many years, etc. But I do like it and am certainly glad it finally came out.

2 sleepers that came in high towards the end:

Esperanza Spalding and Bent Knee. This seems to happen every year. iamthemorning and Dream the Electric Sleep a couple of years ago as well, I heard about, but never got around to. But I finally did in the last few weeks and not only do I really enjoy their new albums, but owe it to myself to check out their other records of course and include more content about them.

Anyway, like I said, some blurbs I will look to add-in in the coming days/weeks, but for now, all I have is just this Summary and the list below. I guess I'm too damn anxious to move on to 2016-2017 and of course that anniversary entry that could possibly come as early as Sunday December 4th (something will be posted about it for sure, if not IT itself, or a part 1 of 2 or 3 of course).

Mike Portnoy interviewed by That Drummer Guy

Just checking this out as I post this. I'm incredibly happy for Josh to finally get to interview Mike, something I can't even help but envious and jealous as well.

All the years on his forum, both Josh and even longer for myself.

Content?
naturally a lot of it is about the new Neal Morse Band album The Similtitude of a Dream, which Portnoy has been talking about a ton over the last several months.

Of course my situation with it being my only experience with Neal's solo music, the Christian element, Christian lyrics have had me shy-ed away from it. But I dunno, I may have to check it out after all the glowing comments (although I could have said the same about many of Neal's other solo/NMB albums as well).

I may try and edit a few more comments about this later once I've heard the whole interview, but again, this is really a great thing to happen for Josh. I dunno, perhaps it will lead to more interviews with Mike Portnoy in the future, which will only grow Josh's success with That Drummer Guy, which I'm totally happy to see.

edit: probably the biggest news from this interview is Mike has a new "Secret Project" in the works. I wonder if any of these 3 people might be involved:
Mikael Akerfeldt
Daniel Gildenlow
Jim Matheos

also possibly Casey Crescenzo. Someone on Mike's forum mentioned possibly a Power-Pop group with the likes of Casey, Roger Joseph Manning Jr and Matt Bissonette.  One can dream?

Sharon Jones: Rest in Peace

I meant to post this the other day but ended up not finishing it it here in the blog.

Sharon Jones was a singer/musician my wife is a big fan of. I have known her, really since seeing her and the band on the IFC show "Dinner with the Band" like 10 years ago.

I always knew she was sort of a late bloomer. But then like a year or 2 later, the hipsters started promoting her, including 89.3, etc.

At any case, my wife and I saw this documentary and it was rather eye-opening, her whole battle with Pancreatic Cancer. It going into remission. Unfortunately, the doc ends before it came back, and now sadly she did lost her battle to it on Friday.

Noteworthy, she did a show with Mayer Hawthorne and Hall and Oates at Red Rocks in CO that my wife wanted to go to as a Bachelorette party in August, but they weren't able to.

Also she appeared live from Daryl's House.

And the below Prince collaborations/jams, etc.

Kevin Gilbert b. November 20th, 1966

Today, November 20th, 2016, Kevin would have turned 50 years old today.

No time to write a long-winded tribute right now, but I didn't want to forget about posting something in here, like I did for Jeff Buckley a couple of days ago.

Both came to us 1 Half Century ago.

Jeff Buckley b. November 17th, 1966

Happy 50th Birthday to Jeff Buckley.

Kevin Gilbert's is on Sunday.

Love that tune. I contended this morning, had he lived to finish it, Sketches would have been better than Grace, no question.

Phil Collins + Mike and Tony (but not Peter) Tour in 2017? (Genesis reunion)

Not sure how to treat this.

a) The search per Google ends showing a Post Date of July, 17, 2010. However I don't see a date on the story, and the comments are new at the bottom.

b) assuming this is true, no Peter Gabriel of course isn't surprising, but disappointing, and the same about Steve Hackett of course.

c) even if this does happen, odds are it won't hit Minnesota of course. But that also remains to be announced. If somehow it does, I will certainly try and go.

d) Gabriel's quote is of course hard to get all that excited for since beyond the 1 new song from that soundtrack, no new material really has come in recent years. And the I/O hope seems low as well, but I recall Peter said something about the songs written for that album don't really hold up now in an interview a few years ago.

Societyrock.com

"According to reports, Phil Collins will reunite with some of the members of his old band Genesis for an epic reunion tour! He is planning the tour for next year and reports are saying that rehearsals have already gotten underway! Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford wil be going to join Phil for the tour, but former frontman Peter Gabriel will not."

Peter Gabriel has revealed this: "Tomy, Mike and Phil are rehearsing now. I'm not involved in this round or this year. I haven't ruled out the possibility of doing something in the future, but right now I'm going to focus on my own work."

The Reign of Kindo: Patreon. 2nd track "City of Gods"

new song "City of Gods" posted for the subscribers. Proggy as hell in the middle.

The band posted something within the last month about new music finally coming soon, and this is it. Am I surprised? not incredibly. I signed up, mainly because I love this band and want to support them. I just downloaded the 1st song of many as they explain in the video below. Song is titled "Human Convention."

I haven't listened to it yet, per my fiancee is on the phone.

Of course our wedding is only 4 days away now, so my focus on this stuff isn't what it is normally, but once the wedding is over, I hopefully can get back to all this stuff.

But for now, I wanted to pass this along anyone who may not have seen. The Reign of Kindo is a favorite of mine, and really should have a much larger following than they do. But we'll see if this new platform will be quite helpful for them to make music and not worry so much about costs of making it, etc.

And of course, at some point they tour as much if not more than they are. The Dear Hunter and them someday should tour, at least if the stars allign. And they should play in Minnesota as I know a ton of people in town who are fans, and even were of This Day and Age back in the day.

And with The Dear Hunter in Minnesota would be just perfect to happen. Spring 2017? I'm just wishing for. If it does? maybe it'll feel like fate, if it happens in a year or 2, I still will be overjoyed.

Also I may post a new entry for each song, or maybe I'll try and do what I did with the Three entry back in 2014 and just bump this with each new track.

edit: finally checked it out. Catchy as hell at times. Love the synths.

The time has come.
New music available now. Download 'Human Convention' for free.

Anakdota - Overloading (2016-2017)

Well this is a pleasant surprise, to a point.. I of course only have listened "Girl Next Door" "Late" and "Different Views" which from a percentage basis, kind of sucks to only have 5 news songs, but I can't complain tho given they have so much potential and I really love all 3 of those tunes.

Great to see them put out their debut album finally!

Anakdota, the Israeli jazzy tinged college-prog band.

This album just was released, so of course being after Halloween, goes on 2016-2017's list, which is both good and bad. Good because it may be the leader in the clubhouse early on. Bad in that it won't measure up to the 2015-2016 list, etc.

But given I haven't spent much time with it yet, it's probably for the best.

Album of course is free to stream on the bandcamp link here:

3. Late 04:20
4. Mourning 05:28
