Arch / Matheos - Winter Ethereal (2018-2019)
2nd single "Wanderlust"
haven't heard yet, will listen after work, etc. Bugs me a lot of other sites got promos, but whatevs, May 10th is only a 1-week from Friday (and an Album Stream probably will show up soon, although I also preordered).

Dark/Gloomy cover art. Almost reminds me of like an Agalloch album cover. And the title "Winter Ethereal" sounds rather Agalloch, Opeth or Scandinavian Metal esque.
Anyway, very excited for May 10th, or even just later tonight to hear "Straight and Narrow" the 1st single (available on multiple formats: facebook, youtube, itunes, bandcamp, etc).

In progressive metal circles, the names of guitarist Jim Matheos and vocalist John Arch are spoken with due reverence. With the former having been a driving force in Fates Warning for thirty-five years, and the latter the original front-man of that band, they also have a single seminal work under the Arch / Matheos banner, 2011's Sympathetic Resonance. In 2019, they have reunited to follow that record up with Winter Ethereal, a more stylistically varied and perhaps deeper collection that explores a lot of sonic territory over the course of nine immersive tracks. "This stems from both of us trying to step out of our comfort zones a bit, sometimes voluntarily, sometimes being pushed," states Matheos. "Having worked together so many times, it would be easy to fall into the same way of doing things, and I think we were both interested in exploring some new areas." Arch concurs and adds: "Each song is notably different from the next, and nothing sounds repetitive. It is not a concept album, but somehow after a full listen from start to finish, there does seem to be continuity between the songs that I can't describe. At over an hour long, I think the fans will agree that it is a full listening experience."

Picking ALBUM OF THE YEAR w Fav Bands (Fates Warning v Cloud Cult, 2016)
In thinking more about Theories of Flight from Fates Warning and how great an album it is, and it is just that, a really great album. I recalled what happened in 2016 and how it ended up my #1 album.
Cloud Cult very early in the year had released The Seeker, an album that still to this day brings me to tears in multiple spots. I really love The Seeker as well. And it was my #1 album for a large portion of the year.
But I guess for me, and I'm sure other people who make the annual Albums of the Year lists and ranking them, and in deciding on the #1 album. Sometimes/some years, I make that decision based on how much I LOVE that band, have long history, and feel very much akin to loving them and their new album. Wanting to love their new album, etc. Feeling that they are MY BAND and their new album IS BETTER than others.
So while I am a very big fan of Cloud Cult and do love The Seeker maybe in some ways more than any other CC album, Fates Warning ended up #1 because they carry that extra FAVORITE BAND element, when making a tie-breaker, it is factored.
Also like in 2009 with Soundscape's Grave New World, an album I longed for, for so many years, and really loved and played an extensive amount of time. But Kevin Gilbert's estate released those compilations that because it is new music from Kevin Gilbert, ultimately won out.
I suppose looking back on it, Soundscape should have been #1 given after all, the KG stuff were just compilations, and a lot of the stuff I knew/had heard, mind you, in much lower quality. But I sort of made an exception that year.
But I think that is an extra factor in deciding my #1 album/ actual ALBUM OF THE YEAR; if the artist is an all-time favorite, I can get won over so much, that I go with my heart with them being my favorite. Even when maybe comparing 2 albums being pretty damn close. There is something about hearing a great new album from a long-time/all-time favorite that means even more to me and many others.
Or there is the idea and occasional option just to choose co-#1's I guess, which I could and maybe will do if faced with this situation again.
But Theories of Flight and Marillion maybe with Marbles and even FEAR, kind of have 1-uped both Rush and Yes in that they made records that are among their 5 or at least 10 best, 20 or or even 30 or more years into their career.
Which also thinking about Fates and ToF, I may try and make a Top 10-20 Fates Warning songs soon given I don't think I have and maybe it's a little overdue.

Fates Warning + Queensryche @ Medina Entertainment 3/16/19
So this was a very big deal to me just as the post I put on FB yesterday:
Only my 3rd time seeing a band I consider incredibly important to me. Really in my 5 favorite bands ever. And I've been a huge fan of for 23+ years. I might trade 3 or 4 of those Dream Theater, Fair to Midland, The Dear Hunter shows for just 1 Headlining show in Minnesota. But that's all just hypothetical, lol.
And even if they were again opening, they played for nearly an hour.
1 of the biggest takeaways is the fact Joe DiBiase joined them on stage for The Eleventh Hour was very cool to see. Joe +Joey Vera of course.
Mike Abdow I have no issue with, even though I love Frank Aresti. He more or less pulled off all Frank's, and in some case, Jim parts.
The new tunes "From the Rooftops" "Seven Stars," and "The Light and Shade of Things" in some ways surpassed the incredible studio versions. I was energized and getting goosebumps at points.
"One" and especially "Pieces of Me" I got really into, as I love Disconnected almost as much as APSOG.
Part 3 of APSOG? while I like it, and of course that album really largely 1 song meant to be heard all-at-once. But Parts V or VI would be great as well. I dunno, I'd be curious if someone might ask Jim and Ray how they choose the set list and what parts of APSOG they pick? I mean they chose Part IX on Live Over Europe, but that 1 is the acoustic ballad "Stayed Up Late Last Night" which may have fit with the flow/tone of that part of the set.
They also did play Firefly, although among the tunes from Darkness in a Different Light, that I recall was one-of the most memorable. But it's been many years since I listened to that. I thought though on the Theories of Flight version I got, it included a live or different version. Plus it likely was on the new double live album Live Over Europe, but I'd have to check. Maybe I never got around to listening to that track on the album.
At any case, I was lucky enough to grab a set list after the show and it did not include "Firefly" but "Falling" which is another Darkness track that I can't claim to be all that familiar with. But in listening to it and Firefly, I'm pretty sure they only did Firefly and not Falling. So maybe they changed the set list after it was written out?
But the show was a joy. I picked up some merch of course and will try and show that in a video soon. I was thinking also about how like The Monkees, who knows if/when Fates Warning will ever be back. I held off buying anything at The Monkees show the other night because of that.

Queensryche: with low expectations, I enjoyed moments of their set from the 2/3 of the songs I knew. "Light Years" being the 1 new track I had heard and like.
The MIX though I found to be clearly LOUDER with Queensryche, which was not a good thing. I actually came home with a bit of ringing in my ears, although it's not like I am dealing with the impact much now some 12 hours later.
Why they didn't play Another Rainy Night (Without You)? maybe they don't per it's a Geoff Tate tune?
This was my 1st Queensryche concert since the Target Center Hear in the Now Frontier show I saw in 1997. Which had the original lineup, now I feel fortunate to have seen, including of course Chris DeGarmo. But jeez, 22 years? I guess I
The crowd and the venue: I liked, although having seats right in front of the stage was odd to say the least. But overall, at least they have a lot of seating. Assigned mind you.
The crowd was a lot of Suburban and Rural middle-aged Metal fans mostly Caucasian, not surprisingly. And mostly Queensryche fans of course, although it did feel odd how many of them had never even heard a single Fates Warning album or even songs. But that is something that happens regularly for me (I'm there for the opener and most of the crowd not only came mostly for the headliner, but had barely even heard the band I came for's music).

Meaningful Songs: Spiral Architect - Insect
Spiral Architect - Insect
From listening to Radical Research's latest podcast about A Skeptic's Universe, I was reminded about how great this band and album was. And "Insect" specifically.
It has this fascinating blend of being jazzy and extremely busy, while giving each instrument space to breath. The bass work especially is almost Jaco-like.
Almost taking like Mahavishnu Orchestra and Cynic and using a singer like John Arch, with pristine production and I'm sure a ton of time and thought into the production alone.
Oddly how I'm seeing Fates Warning tomorrow night, and the podcast they even included SA's cover of "Prelude to Ruin" at the end of the show.

Fates Warning American Tour March/April 2019 (incl. MINNESOTA!)
May 5th, 2001 at the "The Lab" or "4th Street Station" as it may have been known at the time, was the last time Fates Warning played a concert in Minnesota.
I was 24 years old, dj-ing at KFAI semi-regularly, and Savatage was on their in-effect, final tour.
My friend Creighton came with, but didn't have a ticket and he wasn't 21 at the time.
I went to go use the restroom at the Lee Ann Chin across the street, and who is in there? of all people, Jim Matheos.
Jim was really cool to help Creighon get in by having him help with the stagehand work.
It was memorable and really special for me to finally see Fates after being a huge fan for more than 5 years. Also Savatage as well.
And then I got to see them at ProgPowerUSA in 2009, which this upcoming concert on Saturday March 16th at the Medina Entertainment Center in the West Metro, will be almost 10 years later.
And nearly 18 years since they came here.
Seeing Queensryche is an added bonus, which may motivate me to at least revisit their last couple of albums that many fans enjoy with Todd LaTorre.
man, I am pretty stoked about this, even if they only play 45 minutes.
Like Marillion and Rush, I honestly am almost too big of a fan to only have seen them live twice (which in fairness is 2 more times than many huge fans I'm sure).
Also it doesn't hurt that I love their last album of course 😄

Metal Blade Records has proudly re-signed Arch/Matheos for a worldwide deal!
Arch/Matheos began as a reunion between founding Fates Warning members John Arch (vocals) and Jim Matheos (guitar), who hadn't collaborated since John Arch's solo EP, A Twist Of Fate (2003) - and hadn't fully collaborated for a whole album since Fates Warning's Awaken the Guardian (1986). In 2010, the duo began working on a record together and brought along three Fates Warning members to the fold. The five members would in turn release their debut album Sympathetic Resonance in 2011, under the name Arch/Matheos.
Since then, John Arch and Jim Matheos have kept busy with their other projects - but now the time has come for them to join forces once again, for a new Arch/Matheos release, due out 2019 via Metal Blade Records.
John Arch comments: "The desire and commitment from both of us is first and foremost, but the impetus to move forward with another A/M project fell in good part on how well 'Sympathetic Resonance' was received, and how the fans have continued to show their support through a variety of mediums, stating they would like a follow-up effort. The timing for Jim and I seems to be right and things are coming along nicely. We look forward to sharing the results with you soon!"

Band/Artist and What Album-Generation Fan Are You? (Pt 1)
I was thinking about this in a discussion with the wife about her generation of being a fan of The Monkees. How she came along when The Monkees hit MTV and Nick at Nite in the mid 80's ('86-87) and the new studio album at that time was Pool It! for her.
It's not exactly a "1st Generation, 2nd Generation, 3rd Generation" (or 1st, 2nd or 3rd Wave, etc) exactly, but more based on the newest album released.
The 1st new album that comes out either after you become a fan, or I suppose it works best, before if it is relatively recently.
There were some fans that reacted to The Monkees album Good Times! in 2016 as being not nearly as good as Justus, which it was based on partially at least, Justus was the new/1st/most-recent album from The Monkees at-the-time they became a fan.
Mind you, some actually did or do prefer Justus, but my wife and many others thought that album sucked. And many like her and myself really liked Good Times!.
And she also likes Pool It more than Justus, maybe a lot of it just based on how much she likes the music, but also she says based on nostalgia for when it came out around the time she became a fan.
So she's a Pool It!-generation fan of The Monkees. Maybe consider 3rd generation or wave by some, but it seems easiest to just label per the album that was out or came out around the time she became a fan.
So I'm gonna make some more of these entries per time/discipline, etc. But here's 10 artists and the Generation I fall under.
Off the top of my head, I think only 2 or 3 artists I would be in the 1st release/album generation (The Dear Hunter, Kimbra, Janelle Monae kind of..and a few others..Hotel of the Laughing Tree).
Oddly enough though, I told her the whole nostalgia for the new/most recent when I got into the artist doesn't always work for me. Open Your Eyes and Calling All Stations are 2 perfect examples of that. 2 of my least favorite albums from those artists.

Soundscape - Insatiable [1B] (2018)
Soundscape, the progressive metal band that I have often felt to be 1 of the only fans of, online/social media. Namely 10 years ago when their long delayed 2nd LP Grave New World was finally released.
Although I suppose it does go back to the late 90's with Discovery's release and Man and Machine. They did even get written up in Metal Edge (how I found out about them), and they played at ProgDay I recall 3 straight years. Also Powermad (or maybe it was that festival they played 3 straight years? or maybe both? I forget). But I know Soundscape found or retained a bunch of fans who frequent ProgPowerUSA and ProgDay (also Ken Golden from The Lasers Edge used to carry their cds I recall). And the progressive rock/progressive metal/Dream Theater+Fates Warning fans.
So I wonder/hope some of those folks will get wind of this new music from Soundscape.
Anyway, this is a new song "Insatiable" from them which I'm unclear of something.
1) Is this, and only this that is being released tomorrow, Friday the 13th?
2) Is this the 1st single for a full-length that is coming out tomorrow, Friday the 13th?
I know they have a full-length album coming per they wrote and recorded over the last year or so per photos and updates on their Facebook page.
And for me, this is great news of course, although there is a part of me of that assumes a new album from them may not be able to match those 2 what I consider Masterpiece 5-star albums Discovery and Grave New World.
And I was trying to think of what artists have that perfect record for me: Apes and Androids and The River Empires I guess are the only others, and in those cases, they only have 1. Toy Matinee I suppose as well per I don't consider The 3rd Matinee album part of the same discography, especially per Kevin Gilbert wasn't involved.
I mean there are some cases with 2 proper full-length albums that are close (Jellyfish namely), but Soundscape are the only clear case. They in-effect did a few others like Man and Machine and the Ilago rock opera, but that wasn't fully Soundscape (nor was Rob Thorne's America: The Beautiful).
But that all being said, tomorrow, more will come out. I would think if the full album doesn't come, some details about it hopefully will.
And I think I may need to post an entry about this April 2018 being quite a big month for new albums. The Family Crest, Kindo, Kimbra, Janelle Monae and now Soundscape? and a few others. Not unprecedented (June 2009 was a biggie among other months), but this may be the biggest month of the year at least.
As for "Insatiable" I do like it, although Todd Rose's almost-industrial guitar tone and Rob's vocal style add to some new/different elements to this. I'm wondering if Rob has decided to not sing at some of the higher/almost falsetto ranges much of the Soundscape work has? I know he has sang for Sacred Oath for decades, but I've honestly never been able to get into them. Although I haven't spent a ton of time actually, in fairness. But I wonder if the vocals on this 1st track Insatiable are a product of the range Rob sings at now. Or perhaps just for this song?
I guess that will be known when hearing the rest of the upcoming record.

893 Essential Songs (89.3 The Current) TOP 10

But one other thing that crossed my mind about this, in thinking about the likely, pretty eye-rolling list that I anticipate, is that in 2016 it was 893 albums, 2017 893 Artists, so in 2018 it might be 893 songs, if they haven't already done one for Songs (I somehow think they did, but maybe it wasn't in this so called voting process? I can't remember).

Same deal as last year; per I don't pay attention nor listen to 89.3 for obvious reasons, I didn't realize they were doing another 1 of these for these dates, although per last year it began on April 4th, I suppose that would have been something to remember/plan.
So for 2019, it'll probably be April 1st or April 8th 2019 which are both Mondays. But Albums, Artists, Songs. 2019???? Career Discographies? Live Albums? although Career Discographies is basically the same thing as Artists.
I still think the thing to do is my idea posted last year. 89 minutes and 30 seconds for people who win a contest. Hell, even just 1 listener, although that doesn't occupy more than 1 day and just an isolated amount of time for that matter. If it were like 10 winners or more, than it could at least be done for those 90 minutes once-a-day. It would give reason to tune in then. Their issue would be, 24 hours in the day, and only 1.5 for the special reason to tune-in. Which might suggest more than once-per-day. Say like 10 times per day, and like 100 winners or something, lol.
Maybe that sounds far-fetched, but I know i would be interested in those playlists.
I suppose though if they are doing the Pledge Drive, the winner might get 89 minutes of music or even time for their own, per they would have to talk and beg for money they do during the Pledge Drive. Although I dunno if they could do it where the winners would have their 89 minutes AFTER THE PLEDGE DRIVE IS OVER, etc.
Anyway, that all being said, like the previous submissions, none of my songs or artists likely will end up in their 893 list. Well, not sure, but the only ones would be the obvious classic rock names, but the songs I picked, there's next to no chance for, other than maybe Zeppelin and Queen.

Although I suppose if I struggle to find 500 Artists with 1 song, which now thinking about it, shouldn't be all that hard, just time-consuming of course, I may consider more than 1 song per artist.
I kind of suspect 89.3 will do more than 1 song per artist, especially if they truly use the Voting results, which I'm pretty sure they do not 100%.
But as far as my vote, honestly I just threw it together to not invest hours upon days on it up until the deadline next week. Are those 10 or 15 songs above MY DEFINITIVE TOP 10 OR 15 SONGS??? HELL TO THE NO. But they certainly are 10 or 15 songs I love, and if I ever really made as close to a definitive Favorite Songs List, all of them would be very high.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow has been and likely always will remain my favorite song of all-time, largely pure childhood sentimentality and nostalgia. But I didn't vote for it per it probably will get more than enough votes to make it anyway. And it kind of goes into a different category for me, more like most cherished childhood song, etc.
The others though, and the rankings?..meh, I just threw them down and the numbers don't really mean a lot. Hemispheres over Gates of Delirium? lol..why maybe if I ever make a close-to definitive list, it'll just be UNRANKED or tiered or something. Will the React-To be THAT close-to-definitive list? Unlikely.
I suppose maybe 2 lists, if somehow time permits it. 1 being the 500+ Songs with only 1 artist? and the other is just honestly? taking as many favorite artists and puting 5-25 songs in a hat and see where the number goes. The Year 1988 Albums Calendar and Rankings
1988, a year and time I often think of the Bar/Bat-Mitzvah dances and Guns N Roses and Def Leppard songs at those dances.
In going through this year, it seems to be one of those top-heavy years, but still the late 80's had a lot of good pop music I can't deny I enjoyed/enjoy still to a point.
Gangsta Rap, New Jack Swing and even some of the later New Romantic/New Wave bands, and of course pop-hair metal I suppose.
It also seems to have been a pretty big year for 1 Kevin Matthew Gilbert in that his band Giraffe released their amazing 2nd record The View From Here, and he also was with Eddie Money's band around that time and plays on Nothing to Lose.
Fates Warning brought in new singer Ray Alder and released maybe their most progressive album yet, and 1 of the many records I love from an all-time favorite band of mine. And the King's X debut album Out of the Silent Planet came out finally, after many years of refining their sound. And it's an amazing debut album, and the 1st of 4 straight classics they would make with producer Sam Taylor.
Queensryche's highly influential classic progressive metal album Operation: Mindcrime and Crimson Glory's peak to me with Transcendence also were released in '88.
Jane's Addiction, Marillion, Van Halen and some others add to best stuff from 1988. I guess among the years in the 80's, it certainly isn't the best, but definitely not the worst either.

In going through this year, it seems to be one of those top-heavy years, but still the late 80's had a lot of good pop music I can't deny I enjoyed/enjoy still to a point.
Gangsta Rap, New Jack Swing and even some of the later New Romantic/New Wave bands, and of course pop-hair metal I suppose.
It also seems to have been a pretty big year for 1 Kevin Matthew Gilbert in that his band Giraffe released their amazing 2nd record The View From Here, and he also was with Eddie Money's band around that time and plays on Nothing to Lose.
Fates Warning brought in new singer Ray Alder and released maybe their most progressive album yet, and 1 of the many records I love from an all-time favorite band of mine. And the King's X debut album Out of the Silent Planet came out finally, after many years of refining their sound. And it's an amazing debut album, and the 1st of 4 straight classics they would make with producer Sam Taylor.
Queensryche's highly influential classic progressive metal album Operation: Mindcrime and Crimson Glory's peak to me with Transcendence also were released in '88.
Jane's Addiction, Marillion, Van Halen and some others add to best stuff from 1988. I guess among the years in the 80's, it certainly isn't the best, but definitely not the worst either.
