Genesis - Back in N.Y.C.
Ever since getting into Genesis and not long after, Kevin Gilbert, I've loved this tune. I don't put it #1 among the Genesis song list, but it's damn close (top 5 for sure).
The dynamics and crying out vocal performance is off the charts. Some of Gabriel's best vocal lines and lyrics (despite the subject matter..the metaphors are kind of genius).
But then hearing Kevin Gilbert do his own, magical interpretation, it went up there into the stratosphere as a Goose-bump staple tune.
The metaphor of masturbation "cuddling the porcupine" just in terms of the build and crescendo and *climax* just fits/works. Even though I don't necessarily think about that from this tune, I can totally follow how it came to be.
It just works and fits that feeling perfectly.
And this latest interpretation I just came across tonight from District 97 and Leslie Hunt live at ROS Fest a few years ago, brought another wonderful rendition to this. Another take, yet still maintaining the brilliance of this song. The comment about Joan Jett I can sort of follow, but Leslie really came up with something on it.

80's Remix: Somebody That I Used to Know
Among the literally dozens if not 100's of covers, remixes and parodies, this is a pretty damn good one.
I think partly per Somebody That I Used to Know has an 80's vibe and tone to it.
Also among others, it has often been compared to 80's Peter Gabriel.
Anyway, this is fun.

Phil Collins @ Target Center 10/21/18
So I managed to see Phil Collins last night at Target Center.
His 1st appearance in Minnesota since 1992 (with Genesis at the Metrodome), and 1st solo since 1983 (at of all places, Williams Arena).
The Genesis Minnesota curse?
-Peter Gabriel only came once, had sound problems, promised to come back.
-Steve Hackett having issues with people at Rossi's,
-Daryl Stuermer's concert getting canceled
-The Musical Box show getting canceled due to not getting the needing 2/3 of the tickets sold by a month before the show,
-Years later when they finally did come, it was poorly promoted and the guy who booked it lost quite a lot of money I guess.
But last night had really no issues like those.
The hits for the most part were fun. Easy Lover was a ton of fun and as much of a sing-along as I love the studio and video version for. The Philip Bailey parts were done really well by Phil's backup singers.
Follow You, Follow Me almost had me in tears; which I suppose the video montage of the Genesis history, including much with Peter Gabriel added to that.
In the Air Tonight is a showstopper and probably was the biggest of the night. As much as it's one I've heard 1000 times, to see the man sing it and have it performed live (especially the drum part) I had chills to finally see.
And like when seeing Stevie Wonder a few years back, just seeing him finally live, meant a lot to me. Even if he wasn't playing the drums and had to use a Cain, which I guess was due to a recent back surgery.
He sadly can't play drums anymore, and his voice isn't what it once was, but as screechy as it sounds, it still is in key and sounds good enough to still enjoy live.
However, he did participate in the drum duo/trio (with his son, and the other percussionist) on hand drums which that itself was surreal.
I suppose the main thing I can take away from this show that was less than thrilling;
At least 1/3, maybe 1/2 of the show was Big Band driven, which to be honest, hurt some of the mix with the vocals. Also the Phil Big Band stuff is more of the Pop-Jazz variety which I can't say I love.
Overall, since I wasn't sure if I was going to see this show per the price of tickets were through the roof of course, and in trying to watch my budget along with Rocktober and the bevvy of other concerts around this time (Josh Rouse, Soft Machine, Martin Barre, Cream, Alan Parsons Project), I am certainly happy I got to go last night. As this may be the only time to ever see him or for that matter any of the Genesis members live, especially in Minnesota again.
Even despite that, it would have been cool to see him wear his often-seen-in-the-past Minnesota Northstars jersey.
Also Daryl Stuermer was there, which in a way felt like seeing another member of Genesis. And Phil's 17 year old son Nick, is on his way to living up to his dad's drumming legacy which was cool.

Phil Collins - 2018 North American Tour (incl Minneapolis!)
I've never seen him nor Gabriel (nor Rutherford nor Banks actually, only Hackett), and I would assume he won't do much if any Genesis, and if at all, it likely would be the 80's stuff (Invisible Touch).
But I would be up for just seeing him once, even if he isn't playing drums.
And oddly, the wife does enjoy his solo and some of the 80's Genesis stuff namely, so she would be up for going.
And honestly, if the tix are 100+, it will feel more worthwhile to see him than spend that much for Janelle Monae actually, right now. This may be the only chance I ever get to see him, so why not spend a bit more if necessary? I know he's not really a bucket list name for me, but Genesis if they were together certainly are. Gabriel solo too, but he hasn't come back to Minnesota since 2002 and I was in Atlanta seeing Pain of Salvation that very night unfortunately.
Looking forward to October 21st. Will he be wearing a Minnesota Northstars Jersey again?

The Year 1992 Albums Calendar and Rankings
1992, the year which was more or less in the thick of the Grunge movement.
I was a sophomore in High School and addicted to Rush and Zeppelin of course.
But on local corporate metal station, a little band had a song called "Pull Me Under" that kind of changed mine and many other people's taste forever, lol..okay I sound sappy saying it that way.
Yeah, 1992 was the year Pull Me Under and Dream Theater hit. And more or less the prog metal genre was born in a sense.
But sadly, I wasn't aware of who there were in 1992. But looking at the history, when Images and Words came out in June of 1992, it kind of would have possessed my playlist, as it some short or lone 3 years later (Summer of 1995).
1992 though like many years it seems around this period was Top Heavy. Not only Dream Theater but King's released their 4th consecutive favorite record of mine in their S/T. Extreme's III Sides album has become a favorite of mine, and is unfairly overlooked per it doesn't have anything like "More Than Words" lol.
Faith No More released maybe their most influential and what is often a fan-favorite record with Angel Dust. Also sadly, the final album with Jim Martin. I can say, I do enjoy Angel Dust quite a bit, but still feel The Real Thing edges it for melodic sense. But I respect the hell out of it, and have found it certainly is an album that influenced a lot bands and albums I love.
Saigon Kick put out 1 of their better albums in The Lizard, although Saigon Kick actually have no bad albums, so it's really par for their course.
And then the likes of Peter Gabriel, XTC, Rage Against the Machine, and Psychotic Waltz also make my top 10.
