Childish Japes and Dave Vives - Salamander (2017-2018)

This kind of came out of nowhere to impress me quite a lot, just being released on Friday August 4th.

Childish Japes released an EP After You're Born, I enjoyed a bit last year. If I recall, Courtney Swain from Bent Knee even sings on 1 track.

Childish Japes is the latest project drummer JP Bouvet has worked on, ever since the end I guess of The Super Pilots. He has/had a band called Helicopria who have I guess 3 eps I have still yet to checkout (but will), that were active in the early 2010's.

But this new album Salamander is not only Childish Japes but is a full release with singer Dave Vives who had a band called Mals Totem a few years ago who put out on EP with the guitarist Asher Kurtz whose with Childish Japes.

So this record I enjoy many facets about, namely the 1st 7 tracks, but I think the biggest thing about it is Dave Vives vocals. he sounds like Jeff Buckley at times or Judah Nagler from The Velvet Teen, or even Petter Carlsen whose vocals stood out on Long Distance Calling's album Trips.

He can really wail like a banshee on many of these tracks.

The production style reminds me a lot of Bent Knee's albums. With space and clarity. It almost sounds recorded live at times.

"Something Else," "Float," "Old Yeller," and "Lying to Us" among the rest of those tracks standout. The dynamics, and emotion shows up often. I even am reminded at times of the Neverending White Lights.

The guitar tones from Kurtz and Bouvet's crisp drum work are among the best stuff I've heard from him.

I'm not ready to say this is an Album of the Year candidate, but I enjoyed it more than I expected certainly.

And Dave Vives I want to hear more from now, starting with that Mals Totem EP.

AMR Podcast #9: 1st Quarter Albums + Anticipated Update

Kind of a crammed update to the List and Anticipated to a point. I do like that I have done this, this early. Just need to commit to it for the other 3 quarters.

I didn't realize the month when talking about BTBAM and The Decemberists, but o well. I did correct it.

LDC new album is really good, so I would not be surprised to see it finish in my top 10. But that list is really vague in order, Come May, I likely will have something more accurate. Although right now, I can't stop listening to Dirt Poor Robins, which I can anticipate a separate video/podcast coming about them anyway.

Long Distance Calling - BOUNDLESS (2017-2018)

Release date for this new album from Long Distance Calling, Boundless, is February 2nd, 2018.

Really loved their last album Trips from 2016, including the singer. I haven't checked out the teaser, but many of their fans are saying they are happy they don't hear vocals.

I guess I won't care if the music is still good, but I found their use of vocals on their last album refereshing and surprising how well they worked.

Also to note, seeing it on their Facebook, they have some shows they are supporting Fates Warning of all bands (although they are kind of labelmates anyway, so go figure). Wish I could see one of those, but they're in Europe, nuff said.

We are happy to announce our new album ‘BOUNDLESS’ which will see the light of day on February 2nd 2018. This time around the four of us locked ourselves in a room over a couple of months and pretty much got back to where we started as a band to catch this “go with the flow” feeling. This is probably the purest LDC album ever, no guests, no vocals, purely instrumental. We´re stoked how it turned out and this album got a lot of energy, heaviness, melodies and twists, we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

2015-2016 Albums of the Year Videos (4 parts)

4 parts, approximately 52 minutes, etc.

Yeah a bit of a babble fest, but 33 albums included.

I probably should have just done a top 20, but so be it. I suppose it was better to have made multiple parts rather than 1 long ass video.

2015-2016 Midseason

Okay, here's the list. I'm not really going to place numbers or even star-ratings, but you could say it's a relatively/somewhat temporary vague order.

And I'll fully admit, many of these records I've only checked out once or twice, but just based on the few times, I know how I feel about it right now (for now, lol).

The Seeker from Cloud Cult is clearly my favorite record thus far, and it would be weird for it at least not to be near the top by the end of the year in November. It's just a moving record without a moment that I'd remove or get bored by. Although its greatest or my favorite part, the song "You Never Were Alone" gets me in tears every bloody time, so in a sense, it's an album and song I can't find myself going back to constantly, like the 1st week I got to hearing it.

And it's also fair to say, having seen the film it gives it an additional amount of love and memorability.

That being said, it is just 1 of their best records, and I've come to conclude Cloud Cult are as consistent and creative a band over the last decade, and I have almost come to expect greatness from them every time around (I would probably rate 2013's Love a bit higher even now).

But to summarize/cover others on this list, Textures, Vektor, Hands of Despair, SikTh, Gracepoint and Obscura all made Metal albums I am enjoying a lot, and anticipate more headphone time soon. Textures has to be the unexpected highlight and comeback of the year so far as that kind of came out of nowhere to impress the hell out of me. And the Vektor record is Vektor, and a band style I can enjoy a ton without caring how varied it is. We'll see, and it's quite a long record, but unlike Obscura I suppose, I get a little more from their style to warrant more repeated play. Also "Collapse" is incredible. Love the emotions and juxtaposition of vocal style and moods.

I also might add, there's a new Gojira track I found really good and should share soon hopefully; but as for Metal for this year, that record may be one to factor in certainly.

-Brooke Waggoner I enjoy. British Theatre I am liking. Falling Up as well
-The Mercury Tree I have only checked out once, but enjoyed, but haven't had the time to go back to. But I enjoy it enough to include it relatively high.
-Rare Futures I can say the same about.

-Long Distance Calling I checked out finally earlier today and really enjoyed, probably more than I expected to. Why I could see wanting to listen to it a fair amount more from now until November. It could be a bit of a sleeper actually.

-Protest the Hero I also enjoy, but it's not extensive being an EP. And kind of par for their course, which just has me only listening to them when in the mood.

-Snarky Puppy and some others down the list are also kind of lower feelings/expectations but I'm not ruling out.

The stuff I haven't heard? Ihsahn is 1 I meant to check out. The others? meh..including Dream Theater sadly. I did listen to about half of the 1st disc and honestly never felt the desire to go back. I don't anticipate many opportunities to have 2.5 hours to spend with it it at work, all that often. And then I am considering what it is, the reviews, the styles, and how many ballads and concept, and I just doubt it'll warrant my time anytime soon. But, who knows. I may just find the need to check out the best of the non-ballads at some point.

And of course the anticipation list at the bottom. From the Calendar dates, to some with titles and no release dates, to of course the potential including many which seem still very likely given the Social Media acitivities.

Shelter Red - The Split Sabre (2013)

8/9/13 4:51AM

1st single. Awe-some. This LP drops on September 3rd.

5/24/13 10:08PM

This record sounds awesome. Their Kickstarter campaign hopefully will succeed. $1,600 hardly seems like a longshot, but who knows. 1 month to raise another $1400+.

Hopefully this album will give me a little more than what the latest Long Distance Calling and some other instrumental records have thus far (although the new LDC isn't bad, and better than the previous one).

The video indicates a Summer release.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/303940776/shelter-red-the-split-sabre

It is difficult to write songs in 2013. Lots of songs have been written, and yet people expect you to write new ones. Against all odds, we did just that. And then we recorded those songs on our dime. Now the only challenge left to overcome is the financing of the CD's and the Merchandise to support this album. We need your help!
About us:

Shelter Red has been striking terror in Portland, Oregon since 2003. With a sound being described as quite technical and completely original. 2009's "Strike a mortal Terror" was the follow up to 2007’s mind-blowing debut release, “Masters of the Universe,” and "SAMT" was the 2nd release on Sound VS. Silence Records. Shelter Red doesn’t look to fit into any genre or style and doesn’t plan on conforming to any of the masses. While most instrumental albums usually seem to have a bit of a lull in them, SR seems to avoid that pitfall and actually relish in the fact that they don’t need voices to make phenomenal music. They have built a fan base from the ground up, which started in Portland and has worked its way nation wide, through talent, touring, and an astonishing live show. For fans of Don Caballero, ISIS, Tristeza, and Botch.

Despite how underwhelmed I was with their Self-Titled follow-up record from 2011, their 2009 masterpiece Avoid the Light I still love and why I'm still optimistic about this band's new record. For those who don't know them, Long Distance Calling are a band from Germany who make a unique form of Post Rock. It's heavy, melodic, intricate, but not excessive. They create really a nice atmosphere at times.

Another early 2013 record to look forward to. A bump should occur when more info is given.

Shelter Red New Studio Video

I've been reading updates on facebook from this band about their new record for maybe close to 2 years, and as of the last couple months, their yet to be announced titled new album is nearly ready to go. Recorded/Tracked etc..maybe mixing and mastering along with stuff like artwork and a track order (and a title) are needed. And then of course HOW it gets released. Bandcamp? I could see it anyway.

But for those unfamiliar, Shelter Red are what I may call a progressive post metal band of a sort who made a really great record in 2009 titled Strike a Mortal Terror. And with a band like Russian Circles sort of jumping a shark or two, and Long Distance Calling last record not being quite what I hoped, I'm hoping these guys have a new record to fill that proggy post metal fix.

But of course, once all the details are available, I'll be sure to add another new entry with them. But just a heads up about the video and for myself and others to keep Shelter Red in mind as far as upcoming records for 2013.

F-U-C-K. Soh bloody good!

"I'm telling you........"

This record very easily could be the breakthrough or big splash of 2011. Or at least 1 of them. Every piece, every detail, all the hard work these guys have put in. All the time, etc. This has the formula I've seen many times of a record that stands the test of time. A DEBUT record too.

Don't be surprised if in a few years, Deaden the Fields is one of those records I and many others will think for 2011 and the early part of this decade.

The artwork is supposedly pretty close to being finished and posted online.

Also something I found interesting in that interview on that radio show, (before the track was played), these songs..or it sounds like the entire record WAS WRITTEN from JAMS the guys have done over the 7 years they've been together.

They, like Kevin Gilbert and many others, just record everything or every time they jam.

Album Update + Single Launch Details

The album is almost done now in terms of audio - it is off being mastered in Sweden by Pelle Henricsson. We went to Pelle because of his previous work on albums such Refused’s The Shape of Punk to Come, Cult of Luna’s Somewhere Along the Highway and Poison the Well’s You Come Before You. Those are some of our favourite albums ever, so it made sense to us - given the epic dynamics on this album - to aim high and see what Pelle could do. What we have heard so far is sounding amazing - it should be wrapped up this week and sent off for pressing very shortly.

We may as well let some more album details out while we are here. Drum roll please….

The album is titled ‘Deaden the Fields’. It’s a touch under 62 minutes long. It has 6 tracks. It’ll be out in July.

In the meantime, we are releasing a single. The track is called ‘Deep Rivers Run Quiet’ and is 11 minutes long. It’s a typically epic TToL track, but quite unlike anything we have done previously. We were a little apprehensive about releasing such a long single for fear of giving too much away before the album - but it’s only the third longest song on the album!

The single launch is at Manhattans on May 13, with our friends The Silent World, Heytesburg and Cautious Horsemen. We are planning something cool for the release, but we’ll keep that under wraps for now.

More exciting news to come soon.

If you are in Perth, don’t forget about RTR FM’s In the Pines festival next weekend! We are on at 4pm, and can’t wait to play a couple of new songs.

Well as the below related link includes, I have become increasingly intrigued and excited about this record. So much so, I am a little worried it won't meet my hopes.

And with 11 minute tracks and 62 minutes, I wonder if this will be either feast or famine. As I spoke to my friend Josh (from Epic Rock Talk and That Drummer Guy Music Review Blog), I think this record could be like Long Distance Calling's Avoid the Light or even better.

Proof will be found in the pudding of course, but now knowing the title, a bit more about the songs, and it's coming in July, the bar has been or maintains its raised level.

A Top 10 contender I'd say now even, and I haven't heard a note, lol. May 13th or so, the 1st (11 minute, lol) single.

Shelter Red - TBA (2011?)

5/30/11 11:26PM

facebook post with :46 demo/sampler

Don't forget about your favorite upcoming album!!
Release date: TBA,TBA, 2011

Shelter Red, a band who came under my radar really late in 2009 with their record Strike a Mortal Terror, I just was made aware they are still around and announced that on their facebook page the other day.

I know I have mentioned them since, including on Usedbin Radio a few weeks back when the discussion about Long Distance Calling and Scale the Summit came up. But the truth is, sadly, I haven't listened to them a ton since probably early last year.

Why? time and other music. Because their last album really impressed me. Progressive post-metal of a sort. Much like LDC or Russian Circles. Or East of the Wall's Farmer's Almanac period even.

I also just realized after failing to ever find it at Cheapo, it was and still is available for $6 (+3 shipping) on this webstore http://www.soundvssilence.com. So, of course I just ordered a copy.

The demo sounds promising as well. More to add as details come of course, but maybe this record will make up for the minor disappointment of the new Long Distance Calling album in 2011.

Long Distance Calling - Long Distance Calling (2011) (1.0)

12/21/10 4:17AM

I know it's a few days late, but here's the track list and artwork, trailer along with more about it.

1. Into The Black Wide Open
2. The Figrin D'an Boogie
3. Invisible Giants
4. Timebends
5. Arecibo (Long Distance Calling)
6. Middleville
7. Beyond The Void

LONG DISTANCE CALLING push the envelope even further this time out with the surprise guest appearance by Armored Saint/ex-Anthrax vocalist John Bush on “Middleville”.

However, John Bush’s guest-appearance is not the only reason that should encourage people to check out LONG DISTANCE CALLING.
In times of overproduction and compression in order to get a pumped up sound LONG DISTANCE CALLING went for the opposite and worked on an organic production that allows their music to breathe. Hence, the audiophile quintet headed to Hours Studios in Hannover where Celtic Frost, Donots, Paradise Lost, Eloy, Scorpions, Rolling Stones and many more produced some of their classic albums.
The self-titled album was recorded with Benjamin Schäfer who has worked with diverse bands such as Celtic Frost and Subway To Sally.
The result is a production that allows each instrument to unfold its unique sound and its waves to travel the air.
Instead of just cutting your eardrums it’s a 3d sound that surrounds you like a cozy cocoon.

After supporting bands such as Opeth, Katatonia, Dredg, labelmates And You Will Know Us By Trail Of Dead, Anathema, Coheed And Cambria, and Deftones they will finally play their own club shows again in order to give people the full audio-visual experience of “Long Distance Calling”:

Hey folks, after a lot of shows and touring since the release of „Avoid The Light“ in April 2009, we finished our new album “Long Distance Calling”, that will be released on February 18th 2011 in Germany (European release date is February 21st). We can´t wait to share this new songs with, so we decided to book some nice exclusive record release shows around the release date, where we will play the majority of the new songs as well as a lot of “old” stuff. Support comes from the UK band Maybeshewill.

Here are the German dates:

Presented by VISIONS, ROCK HARD, ECLIPSED, GITARRE & BASS, LAUT.de, METAL.d

18.02.2011 Münster / Metropolis Club
19.02.2011 Köln / Underground
20.02.2011 Hamburg / Knust
21.02.2011 Dresden / Beatpol
22.02.2011 München / Hansa 39

European and UK tour dates will be announced soon.

More news on artwork, tracklist, formats, guest vocals, etc will be announced in the near future, stay tuned!

Cool Beans! I hope it comes close to if not eclipses the excellent/breakthrough record Avoid the Light. Guess we'll see. All that good stuff: artwork, track list, etc to be added.

Long Distance Calling - TBA (2010/2011)

7/7/10 2:07AM

Superball Music News Link

LONG DISTANCE CALLING WILL HIT STUDIO END OF AUGUST, SUPPORT SHOW WITH DEFTONES CONFIRMED, NEW MERCHANDISE AVAILABLE!

Up to now the year 2010 was a very successful one for the German band LONG DISTANCE CALLING. They supported Katatonia across Europe, played festivals and the good news keep coming in:

LONG DISTANCE CALLING will start the recordings of the third album at the well-known Horus Studios in Hannover (Germany) where bands such as Celtic Frost, Donots, Kreator, Eloy, HIM, Paradise Lost, The Rolling Stones and many more recorded some of their classic albums. We'll keep you posted!

Furthermore LONG DISTANCE CALLING will open up for the Deftones in Wiesbaden/Schlachthof (Germany) on Friday June 25th, which is a dream come true for some of the band members. Again, the show will underline LONG DISTANCE CALLING's undeniable quality as a well band.

Last but not least:
Brand new merchandise is available online, check www.myspace.com/longdistancecalling for new designs and overall news about the band.

2009's Avoid the Light is one of my favorite "post" albums ever, for what that is worth. And I recently even found a copy of their 1st lp, Satellite Bay, in Chicago at Reckless Records.

The odds of this being released by the end of 2010 or probably less than 50% given if they hit the studio at the end of August. The recording may not be finished until even the 2nd week of September. Then you factor in mixing and mastering, artwork and promotion. November, probably the 2nd week at best would happen.

But stranger things have happened. If it gets pushed back to 2011, it should come out pretty early if all goes well. Should add to another big year for music and album listeners like myself in 2011.

Long Distance Calling - Avoid the Light (2009)

Track List and Observations:

01.Apparitions 12:18..7:30 sorta trippy/mathy/melodic rhythm..awesome build..a few mins later it fades with atmosphere
02.Black Paper Planes 7:19 ..the drums standout in the middle..the syncopation and interplay between the guitar parts..synths, and drums work really well
03.359 7:57...tight drumwork..more subtle spacey synths..5:10 it starts to pick-up again..the layers of clean guitars really work well as it builds..epic
04.I Know You, Stanley Milgram! 10:28..nice grindy rhythm..then goes kind of clean and reminds me of PT..it really builds into a heavy, spacey wall-of-sound
05.The Nearing Grave 7:50 ..Warm/TRIPPY/DREAMY kind of vocals..a bit like Minus the Bear's vox...NICE BELLS OVER DOUBLE BASS
06.Sundown Highway 9:10 ...ANOTHER ENERGETIC RHYTHM..ALMOST REMINDS ME OF dt'S lEARNING TO LIVE..love the acoustic ending.

Okay, this has impressed me a ton, only played it twice. This German-based mostly instrumental psychedelic-tinged progressive post-metal really have composed an energetic, without-filler 55min album here. I am a fan of some *Post* music..actually I'm lying, in the past couple of years I have really found a lot of music labeled as "Post" in some way, to be my thing. But really they either are:

a) NOT the traditionally thought-of Explosions in the Sky or in the case on metalic groups like Isis and Pelican (Mono and some others..most recently Irepress).

b) they are often HYBRIDS. Bands who have a prog rock or psychedelic aspect to their music, with some other quality that is found in "Post Rock"

c) they also focus on SONGWRITING or frankly, don't have length-ly passages that lose (or bore) me.

d) They use a chamber element like trumpet, violin, cello

Groups like Kacica, Oceansize, Do Make Say Think, Nomia, Mutyumu, Clann Zu, Murder By Death I'm thinking more-of.

in the "Post-Metal" vein. Long Distance Calling do belong in the same class with this album as Russian Circles and 2008's pleasant surprise, East of the Wall. And perhaps even a few others I've gotten into of late in Eroica and the Oceansize-esque Meniscus among others.

Atmosphere, muscle, punch, tight compositions, layers, and a nice melodic sense. And actually overall less being more. It's 55 minutes, but it doesn't necessarily feel that long. I put it on twice yesterday, and I couldn't help but have my attention focused on each second; not wanting (or seeming like it should) end.

Give it some more time, but it's a low 80's/4-star album. In my top 10 for 2009. Chances are it won't move-up much, but when it does get passed-up, it'll likely be due to other even better albums (as opposed to it not standing the test of time).

I probably require to checkout their 1st album now as well.

OSI - "Blood"..some thoughts.

a) "Terminal" and especially "Radiologue" are the 2 exceptional songs on this (at least the 1st cd that leaked).

b) OSI have changed and very much may be a 1-album wonder. The textures and layering they used in that wonderful debut record "Office of Strategic Influence" are not used (or incorporated) anywhere close to the same way on this new album nor "Free" overall.

c) I should take the three good songs off "Free" ("Go!", "Bigger Wave" and 1 other I'm forgetting) and burn them with those other two and perhaps the "re:Free" ep into one compilation.

d) A few samples, but pretty much they are limited.

e) My guess is Kevin Moore did a great deal of the songwriting (including the VOCAL-LINES) on both FREE and BLOOD. As opposed to Jim and him, and even Mike Portnoy doing more of it on the debut record.

f) The 1st album flows really well, and in some ways could be regarded as a *suite*. Most if not all of this new album and "Free" are just a bunch of songs really. The mood changes, and not that effectively really.

More specifically with "Blood"..I suppose it may be a little better than "Free" and I want to still hear the Bonus disc material, which includes an extended version of "Terminal" one of the two really good songs on this album. Plus it does have a track Tim Bowness of No-Man wrote and sang on for what it's worth (No-Man being Steven Wilson's maybe 3rd best project, but a big level down from even Blackfield). But "Terminal" I dig maybe mostly with the use of the Zeppelin-like Mellotron. "Radiologue" has a nice hook to it, and I guess features Jim's guitar work, the way I like it. Melodic, thick-toned but not too-in-your-face. And layered enough. I love Jim's guitar work; he 's perhaps my favorite (or like a top 5 or top 10 guitar player for me). But sadly on this album and "Free" there's a bit too few and far between.

His guitar work (writing) on the 1st album and especially the John Arch EP "A Twist of Fate" was incredible. Maybe he wanted to separate that style a little? Or maybe sadly, he hasn't had a lot of new ideas. C'mon Jim, whatcha been listening to? He should check out some of the newer, spacier guitar work of a lot of the alt-prog and mathy/post bands perhaps?..hell it was 1999, but Todd Rose of Soundscape's guitar work on "Grave New World," especially the diversity of tones he used are light years better and more infectious than much of the last two OSI albums.

So, OSI, they really have jumped-the-shark. I figured I'd give them an 1-album bump in-the-road. But sadly, I think due to Kevin's writing style and Jim's input they are a verrry different band now. And very well may be always. It's too bad. OSI could have been amazing. I can't deny, the potential to have Daniel Gildenlow sing that 27 minute piece on the 1st record I'll never forget. John Arch actually almost became their singer as well. And perhaps without Mike Portnoy involved, the direction changed a lot. And what seems like Jim's main focus musically now, all his Fates Warning ideas are out into this (as opposed to them not being put-into the 1st album?).

Sure it's fine they have Mikael Akerfeldt sing and write a song in "Stockholm" which does bring back that mellotron sound a bit. But it doesn't ultimately sound that much different than if M.A. wrote an Opeth tune with a little industrial feel to it. It sounds like something he left off "Watershed" in a way.

Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson (whose involvement with OSI actually was much better), seem to be the token prog-related players of late. Everyone kisses their asses, when to me, their recent work has become predictable as anything. I wish people would move-on and stop praising things, that are their fantasy music-formulas. And instead, evaluate what they put out FOR WHAT THEY ARE. Dream Theater..hell, even Marillion I try and do that for the most part with. If Marillion puts out a bad or less-than-par album, I am not going to kid myself or anyone else on my opinion.

No OSI are just another name in the underground music genre of prog that were cool when they 1st arrived, but haven't followed-up that 1st impression with nearly the promise they gave. The prog scene is like that. Really predictable, and cyclical. Not unlike a lot of other genres. But I know, just based on experience, there is better and more worthwhile music out there to discover; rather than kid myself into believing the similar style, even recipe-laden music that come from groups who were great in the past, have not *progressed*.

But a lot of the people who listen to OSI, will with this album, and continue-on likely with other albums, to praise their current direction. Sorry, they could have been so much greater than they are. I can't be down though, with the wonderful new album Archive and even that Long Distance Calling album I just posted above, this OSI album likely will become an afterthought. I wasn't expecting it to be great, but still hoped I'd be wrong. O well, people have different tastes for good reason I guess.

At least I will get to see Jim with Fates Warning in September at the 10th (Anniversary) ProgPower USA Festival. Even without Mark Zonder. Jim should be doing the Jim Matheos music I love I imagine.

note: I mean to write up a big TV entry soon. Mainly involving the passing of a lot of recent shows. And some thoughts about some good new ones. In due time. It's been a never-ending intake of music of late as to why, among others factors, it hasn't happened. Plus, I mean to wait until after the final show is done to put it together, which will be in a week or 2.
