DREAMS: Daniel Johns + Luke Steele (of Empire of the Sun)

So this is a new band/project with Daniel Johns of Silverchair, The Dissociatives and most recently a solo career.

I am unsure exactly how I feel about their music from hearing these 1st 2 tracks, "No One Defeats Us" certainly is catchy and energetic while being a bit electronic. And "Silence" also uses a lot of atmosphere and electronics.

I only stumbled on this per looking for information about The Dissociatives.

I guess No One Defeats Us vocally is quite different for Daniel Johns, assuming he's singing. The vocals almost remind me of some of the college rock from the 2000's. Or Capital Cities in a way.

"Silence" we hear vocals from Daniel Johns that is more familiar sounding, but still different.

I suppose this is a wait-and-see, and it is nice that he is making music regardless. The Dissociatives EP that was mentioned 3 or 4 years back from Paul Mac may never happen. And Daniel's solo record unfortunately didn't do a ton for me sadly with his Pop/Soul/R and B direction.

Empire of the Sun I know the name and the movie, but can't claim to have heard a lot of their music. If I enjoy this, I may have to look into it.

There's an interview they did when they played at Coachella, which I will check out likely tomorrow. I guess they mention something about a debut album.

Hearts Beat Loud (2018)

I saw this independent music-based movie the other night as part of Sound Unseen's presentation at the newly expanded/renovated Trylon Cinema in South Minneapolis.

Good, feel-good movie.

Synopsis (attempt):
Nick Offerman is Frank, a widowed Record Store Owner and musician and his (gay) daughter Sam, played by Kiersey Clemons is to be a Premed student halfway across the country at UCLA in the Fall (they live in NYC).

But naturally Sam has interest or talent with music, keys/synths/samples, lyrics and Vocals, kind of reluctantly.

Frank realizes he has to close his record store and find another line of work in order to find a way to pay for Sam's financially aided tuition at UCLA.

Sam and Frank write some songs together that are really good actually, but it seems like a short-lived for the short-term musical collaboration as Sam feels it's absurd she would be in a band, or even if she was, with her dad, even though they actually do know how to write good music together.

But it's not practical long term like UCLA, etc.

Misery loves company, or rather Misery creates great/beautiful art/music.

Sasha Lane's character Rose plays a good support for Sam both as a friend and romantically.  She even teaches her to ride a bike, which we find out in a subtle way, how her mom dies is related to riding a bike. Why Sam never learned to ride a bike, etc.

Ted Danson plays the owner of a little tavern/bar (I know, ironically of course per Cheers), and he helps Frank as barkeeps can, etc. His character is a lot different than Sam Malone though; instead of Women, his vice is doing dope in Woodstock, lol.

Toni Collette and Blythe Danner add more element to Frank's and to a lesser extent, Sam's situation.

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Especially in a compelling-story-about-family-and-music sort of way.

And while Animal Collective, Spoon and Tom Waits get mentioned/included in some ways, I am happy that in Frank's record store The Red Chord, we get a lot of visible coverage to The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds among maybe 1 or 2 others), and of all albums Grace Under Pressure from Rush, hehe. It's shown among a few others in 3 or 4 scenes.

Also I think "We're Not a Band" is a hilariously fun name for a band, although I'm sure there will be more than 1 band with that name that will pop-up now if they haven't already from seeing this movie.

That and the 4 songs written by Keegan Dewitt are rather good. Which reminds me of other music-based feel-good dramedy movies over the last decade: Once (2007), Begin Again (2014) and Sing Street. (2016) Which the director/writer Brett Haley mentioned at least Once as inspiration (along with movies like High Fidelity and That Thing You Do among others).

It kind of makes me wonder if these Music-Based Independent Films are a new genre of movie in the 21st Century. Sort of the heartfelt little-engines-that-could. And everyone of them has been good with good (original) songs.

Someone should make a compilation of songs from all 4 of those movies:

Once: Falling Slowly, When Your Mind's Made Up, If You Want Me, Lies

Begin Again: Lost Stars, Coming Up Roses, Tell Me if You Wanna Go Home, No One Else Like You, Like a Fool

Sing Street: Drive It Like You Stole it, The Riddle of the Model, Up, A Beautiful Sea

Hearts Beat Loud: Hearts Beat Loud, Everything Must Go, Blink (One Million Miles)

2017-2018 Midseason Albums List

I was going to wait and try and spend a few more days reviewing some of these records, but per it's already May 9th, 9 days past the Midseason mark, and the fact the 2nd half releases are already coming, I think it makes sense to finally publish, even if only 60 or 70% of these records have been taken-in well enough.

I.e. Some of these titles could go down or up quite a bit come even the 3/4-year update in a few months. Although more likely down just based on new stuff coming, etc.

But I can say with good certainty, this year seems like a more deep year than 2016-2017 already. The top 10-15 records are almost all records I would foresee listening to some if not regularly the rest of this year, but also in the years to come.

I do think it was clear when The Family Crest and Kindo dropped last month, it kind of accelerated the Year and really came up a nice back and forth between 2 records. And having listened to both quite a few times, Crest seems likely to have charged ahead by quite a bit, and may be very hard to beat come November.

Now the counter to the deeper or deep year thought is, just on the surface, there's not a length-ly list of obvious titles to expect from now until Halloween. Bend Sinister, Dream the Electric Sleep, The Sea Within, and then likely albums from Ours, Neverending White Lights, Vennart, Sculptured, Soundscape and Foals. And of course a long list of hopefuls/possibles but hardly any certainty about.

Of course there likely will be any number of records that will show up from either artists I've never heard of, or had no clue were working on a new record (The Tea Party? Arch/ Matheos? The Gathering? Menomena? Opus Dai? Gatherer? etc etc.....unfortunately the likes of dredg I wouldn't expect until 2019 unless a single or possibly an EP).

Podcast and/or Video should be coming soon (hopefully), including the 2nd half anticipation of course.

Phil Collins - 2018 North American Tour (incl Minneapolis!)

I've never seen him nor Gabriel (nor Rutherford nor Banks actually, only Hackett), and I would assume he won't do much if any Genesis, and if at all, it likely would be the 80's stuff (Invisible Touch).

But I would be up for just seeing him once, even if he isn't playing drums.

And oddly, the wife does enjoy his solo and some of the 80's Genesis stuff namely, so she would be up for going.

And honestly, if the tix are 100+, it will feel more worthwhile to see him than spend that much for Janelle Monae actually, right now. This may be the only chance I ever get to see him, so why not spend a bit more if necessary? I know he's not really a bucket list name for me, but Genesis if they were together certainly are. Gabriel solo too, but he hasn't come back to Minnesota since 2002 and I was in Atlanta seeing Pain of Salvation that very night unfortunately.

Looking forward to October 21st.  Will he be wearing a Minnesota Northstars Jersey again?

Umbrellaman - Volcano Beach [EP] (2018)

This is an entry about a new EP that was released about a month ago from Portland band/project Umbrellaman.

Umbrellaman includes Dan Fury who many know with his involvement with Kaddisfly and Water and Bodies. And more recently Madam Officer among other projects.

Dan I guess mixed this EP and plays bass. Although now looking at the credits again, Chris Ruff from Kaddisfly actually recorded/produced it.

And another Kaddisfly connection being Aaron Tollefson is also a member, playing guitar and contributing vocals.

Musically? Umbrellaman remind me of Foals a bit or even Rare Futures/Happy Body Slow Brain in the sort of wavy atmospheric rock.

4 tracks, which I enjoy more or less all of them to an extent. I'm curious to see what Umbrellaman do next, but certainly it's nice to hear something new from some of the Kaddisfly camp members again.

Great melancholy tune! and great video. One of my favorites from Offerings certainly.

Not sure, but the memory of the guy in the flannel might be Kyle Morton of Typhoon.

Videos: CDs and Vinyl (April 2018)

Neither of these videos are short (16 and 19? minutes), but I covered a good amount of ground. I can say, there is an EDIT function in the software I'm using on this laptop, which it's more of a "trim' on the beginning or end of the videos unfortunately. But it may hold some hope for editing these in the future.

No clipping on the laptop-filmed video, so the RSD video with Joyce may have been per my volume levels or how close we were.

I am starting to think the laptop may be the way to go unless I am literally out-and-about filming. It just works better at this point and even the quality of the video seems better.

Oh and I need to actually write a Grimus-featured history entry I think per this video. Not HUGE I don't think, but just an overview like I did in the video.

Kai Danzberg - Pop-Up Radio (2017-2018)

So per Jellyfish and most recently Beck's band, Roger Joseph Manning's post on Facebook about this guy

Imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery, so w that in mind...thank u Kai Danzberg

I discovered the video below, and despite the blatant references, as a Jellyfish, Beatles, Pink Floyd fan, etc, it kind of hit home. And it does sound like a JF track.

So naturally I went to check out the album the track "Welcome to the Show" comes from, Pop-Up Radio, which was released on January 1, 2018.

So Kai Danzberg's music, at least on this song is rather power-pop-ish. I couldn't help but be reminded of Jellyfish or even the likes of Bend Sinister and Timmy Sean in some ways.

This guy I guess is from Germany, and this is his debut album I guess. Although he put out an EP titled Unacceptable last September which is catchy, but also has a New Jack Swing element to it. And he mentions Michael Jackson among the music he's inspired by, Which I actually hear a bit of sElf in the stuff on there.

At any case, I'm going to try and check this whole album out more (I've listened to maybe 2/3 of it, but there wasn't much time at work today = new job, etc), but it's great hear someone new doing proggy Power-Pop.

And that video: I wonder how he did it/how much time, money, etc it took.

Marillion Top 5 Albums

I'm sort of throwing this out here as I actually have never ranked all the studio albums from Marillion, my favorite band. And not even a top 5. Although I have written some extensive things about many of their albums, including some on this list.

I guess if I am a savant about any 1 band with an extensive catalog, that I don't find too many others champion their knowledge about, it is Marillion.

Granted I hardly consider myself their biggest fan in the world nor try and compete (even as silly as it seems to those who do). I approach artists and music like a music-listening buffet, rather than obsess over having, knowing the most about 1 artist. I am more into enjoying a boatload of artists, but not being their biggest fan, but just being a fan/somewhat big-fan.

But the 1 or 2 exceptions is Marillion (and Kevin Gilbert) I like think of myself. Mind you, I still have no interest to know the most, own the most, or win at being the most dedicated/obsessed fan of.

So that being said, I'm posting this initial list for now of a Top 5 (and all of their albums I rate at 5-stars), with the intention of making a podcast and/or videos about either all of their albums individually or maybe 1 long podcast, including every single proper studio album (and maybe an EP or 2).

2000's vs 2010's: Coming

This is just a mention, vague announcement about a couple of lists I've been thinking about, and just comparing them.

I think that is largely per we are now almost finished on the Calendar with the 2010's, lol. And so the whole Calendar-based glance at the decade-worth of something, in this case, music artists, and progressive rock namely, is close to assessing, at least during-the-time.

In other words, with only 19 months or whatever left in the 2010's, the artists that define the 2010's are close to being noted, listed, etc. Again, at least during-the-2010's that I'm aware of.

So the topic and list in this entry I'm thinking I want to update soon.

I mean my intention is certainly sometime in late 2019 or early-mid 2020, do a Top 50 or maybe 100 albums of the 2010's, but given how that isn't that far away, I'm already interested in posting a list not only about ARTISTS from the 2010's and then comparing the ARTISTS of the 2000's.

How do the 2010's fully compare to the 2000's?

What is the difference in sound/influence, etc?

Now I can mention, I started an entry a little while ago just listing Artists and what decade-we-think-of-them-for, which maybe that is more of what this upcoming entry will be. But after I started doing it, I ended up just putting artists from every decade of the history of Rock music, at least from the 60's-2010's.

VIDEOS: Record Store Day 2018

Record Store Day 2018 Videos.

The 1st 3 are just short clips, the 3rd one, a bit longer taken at WHOLE Foods. I wish I would have taken more clips, but the memory in my camera low, so it probably would have required time for me to delete some stuff, etc. Even the battery I think was low (I hardly prepared for it).

The 4th video is Joyce and I showing our purchases, and telling anecdotes, and opinions.

45 or 46 MINUTES, lol. Not intended, although I knew it wasn't going to be short.

Truth be though it was a lot for Joyce, rightfully so. I showed mine and told some stories and opinions. But as I mentioned, I'll hopefully be making another video showing and talking more about the ones I bought plus a few others too of course. At the Storage Space.

Hopefully time allowing.

But I won't blame anyone for either taking time to watch the 4th video (or fast-fwding). I did list the items shown in order (I need to learn how the timestamps are put up so easily for some. I'm sure it shouldn't take all that much time, but I don't have time to try and figure it out right now, lol).

I post an entry like this every year or maybe 2-4 times a year, etc.

So I'm not sure if I'll bump this, or just post a few more of these over the next 3-6 mos.

The intention is to EDIT it and bump it; not *STICKIE* it per I don't desire to have 1 entry stuck at the top.

At any case, as the news, announcements, and speculation for new albums come up, this list will have more titles.

If any of the names get bumped up to be released before Halloween, obviously it'll be removed/posted likely separately. But given it's October 15th, the odds of that are not too high.
