Kai Danzberg - Pop-Up Radio (2017-2018)

So per Jellyfish and most recently Beck's band, Roger Joseph Manning's post on Facebook about this guy

I discovered the video below, and despite the blatant references, as a Jellyfish, Beatles, Pink Floyd fan, etc, it kind of hit home. And it does sound like a JF track.

So naturally I went to check out the album the track "Welcome to the Show" comes from, Pop-Up Radio, which was released on January 1, 2018.

So Kai Danzberg's music, at least on this song is rather power-pop-ish. I couldn't help but be reminded of Jellyfish or even the likes of Bend Sinister and Timmy Sean in some ways.

This guy I guess is from Germany, and this is his debut album I guess. Although he put out an EP titled Unacceptable last September which is catchy, but also has a New Jack Swing element to it. And he mentions Michael Jackson among the music he's inspired by, Which I actually hear a bit of sElf in the stuff on there.

At any case, I'm going to try and check this whole album out more (I've listened to maybe 2/3 of it, but there wasn't much time at work today = new job, etc), but it's great hear someone new doing proggy Power-Pop.

And that video: I wonder how he did it/how much time, money, etc it took.

Tom Brislin - Hurry Up and Smell the Roses (2012)

This is Tom Brislin's solo debut album, that I had no idea was even a thing. I knew he was in a band called Spiraling who once played at CalProg I think in the 2000's (2004? 2003? I forget when).

Anyway, this album is to be honest, A LOT BETTER THAN I EXPECTED.

Tom I know from playing with both Yes and Renaissance as a hired gun live, and I guess he played with Meatloaf and some others.

And he's friends with of all people, Timmy Sean.

But the songwriting on this album is really well composed. Melodic, dreamy, emotional, but not cheesy or even overtly poppy. It's the right mix. Almost like Death Cab for Cutie with Tom Brislin singing, and I not only can tolerate his voice but actually LIKE IT way more than Ben Gibbard.

Why I found out about this now? that new project The Sea Within with Daniel Gildenlow the Flower Kings guys and Marco Minneman he's involved with, I read a comment talking about his solo music being pretty good. And whoever mentioned that, were definitely on the mark.

I now want to re-check out Spiraling I suppose.

I am a Back to the Future fan like many, but I can't claim to be this into the movies as some of the people at this party.

The cover is good though, not straying all that much from the original arrangement, yet you can still tell it's Sir Video and Timmy Sean.

After several false starts, we are FINALLY officially launching Sir Video this summer! We'll have news on our debut live show and some details on the full-length album soon, but we really wanted to share some music with you ASAP. So without further ado, we're very excited to announce the first official release from Sir Video, the 7-track "Light Years EP" available on 7.7.14!

Interesting of the 3 2013 singles: "On an On," "Do What You Wanna," and "Never Knew,"... "Never Knew" and "Do What You Wanna" made it onto this. I am of course looking forward to this, as the title track is pretty sweet and available stream and download with the pre-order as the write-up says, which comes out on July 7th.

I am curious if the full-length record may come later this year or next year. Or, maybe this continues the trend of a kind of cost-efficient/time-efficient releases of singles and EPs.

Sir Video - TBA (2014)

Excellent new vocoder-driven track!

Sir Video have posted about finishing up the MIXING of their new album recently on Facebook, and finally the other day this was posted. I also love the fact they mention Tom Brislin is involved, yes the same Tom Brislin who played with Yes and more recently being a member of Renaissance.

But of course I know Tom also has his own band named Spiraling who just checking, have 9 records of ORIGINAL music (3 live, 6 studio it appears), and their style of music is maybe closer to Sir Video or Timmy Sean's music, than say Yes or Renaissance.

How Timmy knows Tom Brislin is a little unclear. Tom is from New Jersey, Timmy if I'm not mistaken has always hailed from the Southern California/LA area. Maybe at CalProg they met? (Spiraling despite not being prog really, played that festival 1 year and maybe Timmy attended?), or maybe Timmy spent time in NJ or Tom in LA?...it's a bit curious anyway, how they'd know eachother.

But as far as this album, it drops in July according to Sir Video's facebook, and the 3 singles from last year were terrific; I would anticipate more of the same kind of quality as this new single and those 2013 ones.

Timmy Sean and the Celebrities - East Coast Girls [EP] (2013)

Given more or less everything this guy does seems to do, ends up being quite good with his last solo record, Sir Video and some of his other projects like Luzer and the Mahoney Brothers, I'm pretty excited to hear this (when/how much sadly, is an entirely different story).

Songs From and Inspired by Noisewater from 2010 is/was an awesome layered/orchestral power pop record. Anything in that same vein (or better) should be welcome to my and many others ears.

The Orion Experience - NYC Girl

This band was recommended to me by a friend of mine on twitter/facebook/lastfm named Sara. She is responsible for some other gem suggestions like Timmy Sean and Emanuel & the Fear among others.



Well, this song "NYC Girl" is catchy as all fuck. Unfortunately it's a couple of years old, coming off an an EP from 2011. And now this band The Orion Experience seem to be doing some different things in the vein of Rocky Horror Picture Show as more of a theatrical/live performance art almost, sort of focus.Although even with the teaser and website below, and a little turnover in membership? I don't know enough about them to know exactly if they are just doing this live spectacle, or still looking to record stuff like the music on the site and trailer, or NYC Girl and the other tracks on that EP.

They are from NYC anyway, which I don't think it's much of a coincidence, so many of these electro/artsy/dramatic/theatrical groups seem to be based there. And they also formed around the time many of the others I know did in 2005. Their 1st LP Cosmic Candy is quite different though, more straight Power-Pop; kind of similar to groups like The Apples in Stereo, The New Pornographers or even Fountains of Wayne, all of which do not come from NYC ironically.

None the less, I do like this band and will try and keep tabs on them. I just wonder if their future for recording music may not be as important as this "off-broadway" show of theirs which unless it tours nationally, I doubt I'd ever be able to see.

Bleu - To Hell With You (2013)...and earlier?

I wishlisted 1 of Bleu's records on rym back in November, but I forget if I ever checked any of it out. I may have, or I'm getting mixed up with another layered/busy/ power-pop artist that I was suggested for my love of Jellyfish among others.

And I am now reminded that Bleu also was part of L.E.O. which included JF's Andy Sturmer, back in 2006.

He does seem or remind me a ton of Andy in that trailer video.

The comments are rather critical of the album on that blog posting, which it's odd how the songs on Youtube, at least the official videos, don't really seem overly catchy, but more singer/songwriter-like. Whereas these new tracks and that trailer do more so. I'm sort of getting a Timmy Sean vibe to some elements of them.

I want to not only check out this new record of Bleu's soon, but also find the best/catchiest tracks in his back catalog. And also all the other projects he's done, which includes producing and other bands, 1 named The Major Labels I guess.

I am THRILLED to announce that I have signed with Lowe Records to not only release the debut Sir Video LP in 2011, but also to release the first album from my brand new band TIMMY SEAN & THE CELEBRITIES, East Coast Girls And West Coast Dreams ("Like" us here:)! While Sir Video will be slimming down to a duo consisting of John Tiedemann & myself, Timmy Sean & The Celebrities will be a huge line-up of powerhouse musicians including John on drums, Michael J. Roxx on guitar, Frankie Pedano on keys and vocals, and a rotating cast of charlatans on bass, guitar, keys & horns including Chris LeFevre (TheChristie Lenée project, The Mahoney Brothers), Dan "Sally" Salyerds (LUZER), and more!

Whereas my debut solo album "Songs From & Inspired By Noisewater" gave a home for all of my Brian Wilson/Jon Brion/Jeff Lynne inspired material, Sir Video has become a perfect outlet for my love of dance and pop music. Unfortunately this has left a void for my biggest love of straight-ahead guitar-driven Weezeresque/Fountains Of Waynesque/Cheap Trickesque powerpop rock 'n roll that was such a big part of my life for so long with LUZER. Enter Timmy Sean & The Celebrities stage left...

Not only do I have a full-album worth of material ready to go for Timmy Sean & The Celebrities, but I decided that my initial decision to not perform anything from "Noisewater" live was...well...no fun. So beginning with a very-special-soon-to-be-announced event in April, I will be debuting my new band live and performing material from both the upcoming Celebrities record, as well as never-before-performed-live tracks from my 2010 debut solo LP!

Recording for both projects will commence in 18 days in South Carolina with multi-platinum producer (and all around swell guy) Kenny Gioia at the helm, followed by that previously mentioned very special live event for our North East friends and fans in April.

FINALLY, we will then soon after be packing up our guitars and toys (and toy guitars) and FINALLY relocating to our new label's small hometown of Los Angeles, CA!

The guys and I are beyond excited for ALL OF THIS, and would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the one and only Mr. Mike Lowe for making every bit of this happen!

So, this sounds like something to keep up on. Timmy's 2010 solo debut album Songs From & Inspired By Noisewater I honestly only listened to the last 6 weeks of the year, but it quickly bacame one of my favorites, placing pretty high on the 2010 Index.

But from this posting, Timmy has 2 records coming this year, this one, and another from this band Sir Video. What I'm curious about is, how the Celebrities record will differ from the Sir Video one, and both from his debut record from last year. Sir Video might be more singer/songwriter and the Celebrities more layered. My guess is the Celebrities album will resemble more of the Beach Boys/Queen kind of stuff I loved on the record from last year. But I'm looking forward to hearing both of these albums.

There's some samples (demos) already up here, and they have a sampler called The Free Three I guess for a show the Celebrities are doing in April.
