AMR Podcast #9: 1st Quarter Albums + Anticipated Update

Kind of a crammed update to the List and Anticipated to a point. I do like that I have done this, this early. Just need to commit to it for the other 3 quarters.

I didn't realize the month when talking about BTBAM and The Decemberists, but o well. I did correct it.

LDC new album is really good, so I would not be surprised to see it finish in my top 10. But that list is really vague in order, Come May, I likely will have something more accurate. Although right now, I can't stop listening to Dirt Poor Robins, which I can anticipate a separate video/podcast coming about them anyway.

Long Distance Calling - Boundless
The Gloomcatcher - Blade in the Belfry [EP]
Typhoon - Offerings
Galactic Cowboys - Long Way Back to the Moon
Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs
In Vain - Currents
The Dear Hunter - All is as All Should Be [EP]
The Faceless - In Becoming a Ghost
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pacifisticuffs
Greg Herriges / StellaRoma - Revel and Ritual
Esperanza Spalding - Exposure (+Undeveloped)
U2 - Songs of Experience
Cloud Cult - The Great Alone (OST, instrumental)
Nicholas Krygovich - In an Open Field
Field Music - Open Here

Umphrey's McGee - it's not us

+ a lot of anticipated albums and artists.

The Decemberists - I'll Be Your Girl (2017-2018)

New album coming on March 16th from The Decemberists. Like Between the Buried and Me, I honestly don't have a ton of expectations for this, but I will still check it out, The 1st single "Severed," tomorrow at work. Some comments are saying it's electronic. A bit like Josh Rouse's new music, and a big departure, which could be a good thing.

That thing Offa Rex that Colin Meloy did last year had intrigue, but ultimately didn't do a ton for me other than the 1st single.

And the tour dates below include St.Paul April 6th, but unless I love this thing, I can't be all that aggressive to see them again. I mean I might, but it seems the concert calendar keeps filling up and budgets, especially with needing to look for a new place to live, have to factor in with a lot of these (and I'm seeing Michael Nesmith next week in Hollywood, lol).

Offa Rex - The Queen of Hearts (2016-2017) [The Decemberists + Olivia Chaney]

7/13/17 12:00PM
Stream

its been up there for a week now, but I haven't checked it out yet. Should be soon. Reviews have not been amazing for it though, which like the new Planetarium project from Sufjan Stevens and co, I hold with a grain of salt.

6/1/17 12:25AM

Saw this new video of "Blackleg Miner" on the Drowned in Sound message board.  Will give it a go later. I must say, this project/album has me a fair amount more intrigued than I would ever have expected.

This album could be a sleeper for the end of the year.

in the vein of a 60's and 70's British Psych/Folk Revival, which doesn't sound like they are branching out incredibly, sans for using Olivia's vocals I suppose. The "Queen of Hearts" interpretation is nice though.

The Harpsichord on it does add something. I guess given my lack of love for their last couple of albums, this could be a welcome diversion.

“The Chimney That Wasn’t Stuffed With The Bodies Of Murdered Women”
“A List Of People Who Have Never Drowned”

“Society Is Functioning Pretty Well (Here In The Past Where We Live)”
“We Have Enough Food This Winter”
“Just An Ordinary Riverboat Captain Who’s Only Had Consensual Sex”
“Margaret, A Woman Who Is Alive And Reasonably Content”

Good to see this information surface, I do recall know that they were going to comeback soon as when I met Colin Meloy at the book signing he and his wife did back in 2012 in Roseville, MN he mentioned that they would be working on new music soon. Some of that may have been contigent on the timing of how well Jenny Conlees health was doing (she was being treated for Breast Cancer from memory).

More to post/update in due time.

The Decemberists - The King Is Dead (2011) (1.0)

official site

Colin Meloy's twitter

And our new record is called . . .

(Can i get a drum roll, please?) 1:09 PM Nov 2nd via web

THE KING IS DEAD -- out January 18th, 2011!

Track list

1 Don't Carry It All
2 Calamity Song
3 Rise to Me
4 Rox in the Box
5 January Hymn
6 Down by the Water
7 All Arise!
8 June Hymn
9 This Is Why We Fight
10 Dear Avery

new song kind of like R.E.M. as 1 post on rym suggested. Maybe they're abandoning the prog thing? guess we'll see. The Hazards of Love sadly didn't live up to the hopes/hype ultimately. I hope this one resembles The Crane Wife more so.

The Decemberists - Hazards of Love (2009)

Some very early impressions (ot hopefully added/elaborated on soon).

The Decemberists - Hazards of Love

Well, even given the transcode and a big LACK OF HEARING THE SEGUES LIKE THEY ARE INTENDED TO BE HEARD (with annoying gaps)..I'm still already highly impressed by this. It's like they took what they were doing on THE CRANE WIFE and blew it up into a full-on Concept album or Rock Opera. A handful of tunes or *movements* are sung by female vocalists to voice characters..1 being "Margaret" I guess. SO the biggest thing is taking this whole thing in as a large work, rather than individual songs really. Seems like it's gonna be 1 that'll be the ole greater-than-the-sum-of-it's-parts.

Man 1 piece had a total Deep Purple section..and the theme in "The Wanting Comes in Waves" (and maybe even moreso, the REPRISE for it) almost sounds like something The Dear Hunter would write.

It's 17 tracks and may seem like a bit much to get through, but I'm just suspecting it'll be worth giving this thing some extensive time and see where it goes. It may not have any piece as great as "The Island," but still it very well could be their best work to date.

And it also could be their most accessible to any progressive rock fan.
