Bend Sinister - Small Fame (2012)

7/3/12 8:57AM

The whole thing is now streaming on the
Canadian Broadcasting Company's website.

Damn, if only I had seen this before I left for work, or last night. I guess I'll have to wait until late tonight to check it out. A nice 4th of July surprise, for a band whose never toured the Red, White and Blue at this point. Ironic?

Vancouver progressive rock band Bend Sinister is releasing its highly anticipated new album on July 10, and CBC Music has an exclusive stream of the album all this week. Small Fame is the band’s first full-length album since their 2008 release, Stories of Lovers, Tales of Lovers. Small Fame follows Bend Sinister’s traditional brand of progressive pop rock blended with classical melodies. The album is sure to be your summer anthem; it will carry you through the hot days of July and have you hitting replay all through August.

For the last three years, the band has been relentlessly touring and releasing music. They have released two EPs and one full-length album. The band’s songs are infused with their musical influences, such as Queen and Supertramp, but it’s their original sounds that carry the band to an artistic high. At the heart of the band is Dan Moxon, who can be seen sitting in front of a piano, behind a set of drums or annihilating a microphone. It’s Moxon’s falsetto that provides the final topping for a summer album.

Small Fame was recorded at Fader Master and Mushroom Studios in Vancouver and was produced by Shawn Cole (You Say Party, Yukon Blonde).

Bend Sinister tour dates

July 19, Vancouver, The Venue, Small Fame CD/Vinyl release show with Fields of Green and Young Pacific.

July 20: Kamloops, Cactus Jacks.

July 21: Vancouver, Khatsalano Festival.

And here's a special treat:

"A Bend in the Road", a 60-minute documentary about independent bands touring Canada, directed by Dan Moxon (Bend Sinister), Edo Van Breemen (Brasstronaut) and Nicholas Friesen (Winnipeg filmmaker)

not bad, although not catching my attention as much as "She Don't Give it Up." But it may with time and hearing it with the full record.

I took the plunge on both the Vinyl and compact disc. I suppose it would be great to purchase some t-shirts or other things as well from them, but then again, seeing them live might help.

story from exclaim.ca

When Bend Sinister announced their On My Mind EP earlier this year, they hinted that a full-length would soon be on the way. Sure enough, the Vancouver prog-pop unit just confirmed that their latest long-player is called Small Fame and that it will be out on July 10 through File Under: Music.

Like the On My Mind EP, Small Fame was recorded by producer Shawn Cole (You Say Party, Yukon Blonde) at Fader Master and Mushroom studios in Vancouver.

Two of the album's 12 songs come from the prior EP ("Give It a Rest" and "Got You on My Mind"), while the other ten tracks are new. According to a press release, these tunes give Bend Sinister a chance to "carry out their traditional brand of classic rock influenced song writing while maintaining a uniquely modern twist throughout the entire album."

Check out the opening track "She Don't Give Up" at the bottom of the page.

SPRING NEWS UPDATE
APRIL 23, 2012
hello everyone. so after taking a bit of a break thru April after our great and successful Canadian tour this march, we’re back at it! On APRIL 26th we are happy to have been invited to play a sold out PECHA KUCHA night at the vogue theatre. This is a great event where people come to give short presentations of all sorts. We are also going to be performing MAY 6TH at zulu records as part of a collaborative art project called PLAYGROUND. During the event we will be performing a rendition of our song THE ROAD DIVIDED from the latest EP with around 150 people singing and playing along. if you’d like to get more info, you have to RSVP to the event to get in, which is well worth your while, considering there is free beer! Check out the first lesson plan here:

In other news we are happy to announce that we will be releasing a full length album titled SMALL FAME, and it will come out July 10th on vinyl!!! Finally.

Nice to see, and it's coming on July 10th; although I and others I'm sure knew this was coming soon. The thing I don't quite get is I am not seeing it on their Facebook nor Twitter pages anywhere, lol. Not on File Under: Music, their record label in Canada, Facebook page either. There's a lot of stuff about tours and a song competition they are looking for votes for, but nothing about this new upcoming record, Small Fame, from what I have looked at.

Oh, well, hopefully something will show up soon. Regardless, I'm pretty jazzed about this. Of course they released a new EP just in March titled On My Mind that more info was posted in this blog here.

As always, when more info is available, this entry should be bumped and edited.
