Their upcoming full-length album, Foolish Games, is set to be released in May 2018.

The 1st single "Heard it All Before" is there to stream (haven't listened yet of course).

More details coming, of course my Fanboy-bias is in full-force here.

But the honest to gawd truth is, I enjoy every single release they've had, to varying degrees. But the full-lengths especially are all between 3.5-5 stars. Animals was great in 2014 and Small Fame I have almost come to prefer even more.

2017's EP Walk the Other Way also I thoroughly enjoy.

Also we'll see what this one it like with their new drummer.

Bend Sinister - Animals (2014) [Early Review]

Bend Sinister Announce 'Animals' LP, Premiere New Track

1 Best of You 8:35
2 Fancy Pants 5:07
3 I Got Love 3:08
4 Better Things to Do 4:59
5 Thunder and Lightning 4:39
6 Teacher 5:09
7 Seventeen 3:32
8 You Remind Me 4:10
9 Through the Week 4:53
10 It Will Never End 4:40

Okay, here's a brand new, clean entry that allows this review to be on it's own.

"Best of You" has this great driving chorus in the first half that really kicks off the album well. And after it comes to its climax in the middle, the piano and slowly building methodical section "When the World, it brings you down. Keep your head up high, and your feet on the ground." I love the way it continues to get bigger and bigger with layers of vocals doubling, piano, percussion. It's one of those grand, majestic epic pieces, almost like Queen. Dan's use of the same vocal lines that harmonize per a different octave and how the guitar solo complements them totally soaks me in.

"Best of You" might be the best opening track the band has ever written, and even the best song. It's really perfect and I guess time will tell, but I don't imagine getting sick of it anytime soon. I love the atmosphere.

"Fancy Pants" was the 1st single/shared track a few months ago that I've enjoyed more or less since hearing it (in fact even when they played it at the show I saw last March in Chicago). Musically it contrasts with "Best of You," in a good way as it's almost like a very catchy, dancey, energetic almost cabaret pop track. The way the hook works, the use of trumpet and the gang vocals are used works so well. It's a new side to Bend Sinister, that I am totally enjoying.

"I Got Love" is maybe the 1st high energy rocker on this album. I actually was kind of hearing a little early Rush on this song. I'm referring the blues rock era of much of the 1st 2 Rush records. The bend lets loose here, really in a stripped down, riffy and call-and-and-response way. A few tracks on Small Fame had a similar element and energy, although I'm not sure any of them were quite this tight and straight forward. But like "Fancy Pants," this is another contrasting track that allows this record to change gears in a great way.

"Better Things to Do" is nice thematic ballad that sounds lyrically about a story of a 1st date. Perhaps it's sort of response to the hopeless romantic ideal. Being that trying to find love (as opposed to *having it* like the lyrics on the last track) and failing, and thinking you do have something better to do with your time.

Musically, I think the best moment(s) of this track are about 2:30 mark or so when Jason Dana has a hyper yet short drum solo and a wicked saxophone part comes in. Then it slows and starts to gradually build again in Bend Sinister fashion; the songs builds to a wonderful climax bringing back the original chorus but in a much more layered or full sounding way.

"Thunder and Lightning" is maybe the most ballsy, heavy track on this album. A little like "Quest for Love" from Small Fame, it just gets in your face. The intro I keep thinking a little bit of the opening guitar riff from Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh." But once that sets the stage, the heavy almost Jon Lord-like organ lines just cry out with energy. Dan's vocals go from call-and-response chanting with distortion "feel the thunder, feel the lightning, feel the thunder, feel the lightning" which then leads to a guitar/vocal chanting doubling.
Which is repeated with a 2nd verse and then this great instrumental bridge that is just bombastic. Jason Dana's drum work namely, just pounds.

Then this adrenaline rush of a track concludes with another out of left-field moment with a guttural voiced phrase.

"Teacher" is the 2nd track that was initially shared and definitely differed from "Fancy Pants," but also in a good way. It really does rock hard like many of the songs on this album. However, it starts out, with I keep thinking is another Led Zeppelin-like element, using a keyboard patch that almost sounds like the mellotron intro to "In the Light." Although that only lasts a short-while, and gets right into this really energetic upbeat verses. Organs and keys receiving their share of the lead in the mix. Dan Moxon's organ-sound just goes so well with Jason Dana's tight snare and cymbal work. The recipe works so well from a layering standpoint.

Then about 3-and-a-half minutes in, this almost wall of sound of keyboards come in. It's a very 70's classic rock sounding, almost like Rainbow or Supertramp who the band have cited being fans of.

Then the chorus is repeated and ends this track with a bang.

"Seventeen" continues the heavy guitar riffs from Joseph Blood and the organ and calling out vocals from Dan Moxon. At one point it sounds like Dan Moxon sings "Act Two" in one of the phrases. Some others I've managed to notice include:

"You better take the stairs"

"Someone says she is just a tease...She was only Seventeen"

The way the organ leads to this great chromatic guitar line keeps my attention throughout this track. Dan then keeps repeating "She was only Seventeen..She was only Seventeen!..She was only Seventeen!"

"You Remind Me" takes another left turn with this opening synth patch.

This is another song about meeting a girl, in an attempt or process to find romance. It kind of has that classic pop looking-for-love lyric. But it comes across as subtle, not over-the-top and sappy.

"You remind me of a girl I once knew when I was younger. Or maybe a song I heard one night while listening to the radio"

I even enjoy the little synth bridge where Dan changes up the vocal accents to work with the tempo and add harmony.

The ending of "You Remind Me" includes a segue into the next track "Through the Week" with this gentle guitar refrain and then piano. I keep hearing dredg on that part (like Catch Without Arms). Although by the time this track kicks in as almost a piano ballad, Dan's gentler tone almost harkens back to some of the vocals he did on some earlier stuff like Stories of Brothers and especially Broken City, which I totally go for.

Lyrically, like many tracks on Animals, the words are relate-able. Although it probably refers to a relationship, but on the surface, "through the week" refers to like a supply of some resource like gas or a food or something. Or just *getting* through the week.

then the guitar refrain and piano comes back with this DREAMY chanting. I actually think of The Dear Hunter a little bit there.

"It Will Never End" then closes out this record. The verse while maybe a little faster than typically, I keep thinking Billy Joel could have sung chorus.

"Keep your head up, and your feet on the ground"

"You fool yourself again..never end"?

The way they introduce that sad melody with the almost whistle-sounding key patch, and it gets repeated in multiple forms totally works. Around the 3:45 mark, the heavy synths bring it back with the drums, and then the guitar. I just love to bits. Because it's a really sad sounding, and emphasizes, in this case with repeated textures and sources. I think it's another classic case of Bend Sinister creating this beautiful interval pattern that is unforgettable yet it doesn't overstay its welcome. It almost reminds me of Marillion, specifically "Neverland" and the floating, dreamy closing track to a journey or trip of a record.

They really know how to create the intense yet concise idea at an accessible length and format. Which is why I think they really could blow up, but, I'm still a bit too wary and seen that situation disappoint far too many other times to have a ton of hope about it.

However, I do think this record not only is good enough but could likely even find more distribution than Small Fame did, that it may end up getting their name a lot more out there than it ever has before. I hope it does, however, I think at that point, I would not expect hordes of folks clamoring for their earlier music beyond Small Fame for some reason. Why I say that is I notice the folks who mention or know them, know them almost soley for Small Fame and sort of think of Small Fame as their debut record, and Animals as their sophomore record. Which of course is not true, but in a way, sort of makes sense given the changes in lineup, their 1st exposure really to the US and other parts came with Small Fame.

But if those folks do catch on and stay on, then those brilliant earlier records will be discovered, and as a fan of those, I will at least want to smile.

But with Animals, it's a different record in a lot ways. Very organ and keyboard heavy, yet it is quite diverse in terms of the kinds of songs. Is it their best? I'm not sure, it's not far from all their others, but in my biased fanboy opinion, it seems like trying to compare favorite children, etc.

But I can certainly say for 2014, it is the best or my favorite record thus far. So, it takes the top spot for now, and the dozens of records I hopefully will be taking-in will have their work cutout for them to matchup to it. And "Best of You" I certainly think is among their best tracks, which that alone I think will allow this record to have staying power for many years to come.

The 1st of many, or the last of 1? :p (it's currently still pending)

Bend Sinister - Animals (2014)..TEACHER + PREORDER/PLEDGEMUSIC

3/10/14 12:00PM

The Pledgemusic supporters have had it for a few days (and it was streaming in Canada I recall as early as last Thursday on Exclaim.ca)

But it is released tomorrow (and the Pledgemusic Campaign reached well over 100% on Friday). But finally a stream as far as I know, is available for everyone here:

On File Under: Music's Bandcamp

As for a review, I should put something in either this entry or a new entry in the next 24 hours. I just haven't had the time yet, but I have listened to it 3 times now and love pretty much all of it. It could be an Album of the Year certainly, and I suppose is now in-effect my top record for 2014 at this early stage.

Oh, and I may also include something extra with said review, but the key word is *may*.

edit: this is some kind of trailer I guess.

"Fancy Pants" is there to stream. I'll try (but of course not guarantee) to add something later today as I am on break right now at work. I can't find a Track List yet, if it was posted somewhere.

Fancy Pants of course is 1 of the tracks I recall hearing them play live last March. Good, catchy tune with a twist from what I recall.

"Animals" being the title? I'm sure has no connection to the Pink Floyd record, but if this album is even HALF as good as that record, I will not be disappointed.

Not to forget, their last album Small Fame, was an excellent proggy power/bluesy pop album from 2012.

Too bad their upcoming tour isn't hitting the US or even Winnipeg, but o well, hopefully more dates will be added soon. March 11th however, this should be 1 to look fwd to (or earlier, when a stream or a preorder download is available).

By Alex HudsonWhen Bend Sinister released their album Small Fame in the summer of 2012, it had been almost four years since their prior LP. Fans won't have to wait nearly that long until the Vancouver prog-pop band's next album, since they've announced thatAnimals will drop on March 11 via File Under: Music.

The album was recorded in San Diego with producer Joe Marlett (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age), and apparently the results find the band continuing to expand their sound and drawing on a range of genres. All of the members collaborated on lyrics, chord progressions and songwriting.

"With this album we tried to say 'yes' to everything," guitarist Joseph Blood said in a statement. "As much as possible we let go of any preconceptions over how we think we should sound as a band and just let the songs come out."

For a taste of what this sounds like, hear the jauntily bouncing, cheekily "Wonderwall"-quoting song "Fancy Pants" at the bottom of this page.

Also below, peruse the band's upcoming tour schedule. It includes a number of freshly announced Canadian dates that stretch into the spring.

Tour dates:

12/06 Vancouver, BC - Vogue Theatre
12/19 Vancouver, BC - Joe's Apartment Bar
01/25 Rossland, BC - The Flying Steamshovel (Blizzard Music Festival)
01/28 Golden, BC - The Rockwater Grill and Bar
01/29 Lethbridge, AB - The Slice
01/30 Fernie, BC - Northern Bar & Stage
01/31 Big White, BC - The Blarney Stone Irish Tavern
02/01 Kamloops, BC - The Dirty Jersey
03/20 Toronto, ON - The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern
03/21 Kingston, ON - Clark Hall Pub
03/22 Montreal, QC - Casa Del Popolo

Bend Sinister - She Don't Give It Up (live with Orchestra)

Well fuck, that was pretty breathtaking. Although I would have been curious to hear the guitar solo done in chorus on the strings. But man, this sounds awesome with the strings!

I'd love to see/hear the rest of this set. Hopefully they'll share it soon, as they shared this in the process in finishing work on their upcoming record I guess, which could be released in early 2014.

Hey everyone, we've just been getting the mixes for the new album streaming in now and were hard at work getting everything together for a release date early 2014. In the meantime check out another video we just finished of our perfomance with the VAM orchestra.

On Dec 7th Bend Sinister performed a set with the Vancouver Academy of Music Student orchestra at their winter concert. This is the second song we recorded from the 2012 album SMALL FAME.

Produced Mixed and Mastered by Alex 'Condor' Aligizakis and students at Nimbus School of Recording Arts

Bend Sinister: Quest For Love VIDEO (OMG)

OH MY GAWD this is OUT-FREAKING-RAGEOUS!

When Bend Sinister guitarist Joseph Blood got cast as an extra in an adult film, the Vancouver musician slipped a copy of his band's album Small Fame to the film's star, celebrity performer James Deen. Won over by the band's combination of classic metal beats, proggy organ melodies and singer Dan Moxon's live-wire tenor, Deen agreed to drive to the Mojave Desert with the film's director Lee Roy Myers to shoot a video for closing track "Quest for Love." In the video, Deen mugs in a Rob Halford-style leather vest and spiked bracelets as electricity flows through his body.

Bend Sinister in Chicago 3/20/13

Here;s the setlists they played from memory:

JBTV
One Shot
Hot Blooded Man
Better Things to Do
Fancy Pants
Black Magic Woman
Things Will Get Better

Underground Lounge
She Don't Give It Up
Fancy Pants
My Lady
Better Things to Do
Man of Faith and Virtue
Dr.Lee
Time Breaks Down

I'm not 100% on the Set-lists, but that's damn close if not exact. They played both new tunes "Fancy Pants" and "Better Things to Do" at both performances, and I can't forget how good both of those new tracks sounded. Especially the latter, has this tremendous outro that comes from a classic Bend Sinister twist in time and tone of the song.

But I'm not sure how long this write-up will be, but I'm sure I'll feel like it should be a lot longer given I have waited nearly 7 years to see them. And I probably mentioned half a dozen times or more about wanting to see Bend Sinister live, and doubting it would ever happen.

But the JBTV show, was at this cool, professionally set-up studio by this guy Jerry Bryant, which I'm not clear on if under the current incarnation, goes back as far as he has being doing these filmed band performances. But I guess he's done these things for 28 years in Chicago, possibly all at the same studio. On the wall are a large assortment of signed and framed plaques, photos, etc from many different Rock acts. I guess for the most part, the bands that end up playing at The House of Blues in Chicago, end up going to JBTV and doing interviews and performances to the small group of lucky fans.

Bend Sinister, were not of course at the House of Blues later last night, but it was very cool regardless. I noticed among the bands on the wall, Ours, from the Precious period I guess. The next time I see Ours/Jimmy I'll have to ask him about JBTV in Chicago. Also as I understand it, all the performances (and interviews?) are available to watch on JBTV's website  . The Bend Sinister performance from yesterday should be up there eventually, but it may be a few weeks or over a month  depending on how long it takes them to edit it.

But as it turns out, I was the only FAN who showed up for Bend Sinister (until the very end when 2 others did, but it was after they had finished playing unfortunately for those 2), so as the guys who did the camera, lights,. sound and whatnot there said, "it's like having your own private show." Which it was, but it didn't detract one-bit from it.

So, after they were done, I was going to kill time before heading over to The Underground Lounge. But the Bend Sinister guys were cool enough, to let me hang with them and ride over to the venue with them in their van. That was really fun, as they are all nice, down to earth guys. Just getting to chat with Dan Moxon meant a ton to me.

We even ate dinner over at the somewhat famous Philly-Beef sandwich restaurant "Al's" which while it was/is a fast food sandwich shop in the vein of a Subway/Jimmy John's I guess, the Hot Philly Beef sandwich was MOUTH WATERING good, I totally follow why Adam Richman of "Man vs. Food" featured it. And Dan, along with the rest of the band have been eating "90% Vegan" the last few months, including on this tour. But Dan knew about Al's and it being recommended for Chicago sandwiches, and made an exception last night.

It kind of reminded me of having dinner with the Kaddisfly guys back in 2006. Those guys, are just normal guys who happen to be awesome musicians and songwriters, and I was lucky enough to get to hangout with and have dinner like buddies. Also somewhat like the Joey Eppard experience in Rochester, MN a few weeks ago. Shooting the shit with Dan and the other guys was something I'll never forget. Maybe as much if not more than the actual performances they gave last night.

So, the show finally started, and the Underground Lounge, I might compare to a place in Minneapolis I like called "Club Underground," which I mentioned last fall in my Minnesota venue diatribe. It seems like a place that might be sort of a dive-bar type, but actually, while not amazingly nice, is a lot more intimate and non-repulsive than many other "bars" or cheap clubs I've gone to in the past.

There were 3 bands there, 1 being BS of course, another being The Runaway 5 which I was sad due to how late it got, I ended up missing. The 3rd/opening band however, Single Channel Stereo, I caught a bit of their Sound-Check which intrigued me. And then finally seeing them a bit later, they at times floored me. And dare I say, stole a little bit of Bend Sinister's thunder.

They kind of reminded me of a couple of bands who I enjoy, maybe 1st and foremost, Brice Plays Drums. With their Multi-part compositions that seem to shift well in tempo and styles in some ways. Vocal harmonies, and other parts. The keyboard arrangements and their guitarist really has great feel and knack for adding a boost to some parts. And their drummer was almost like Keith Moon at times, lol. He was playing a small kit, but incredibly animated and bombastic throughout many of their songs. Their bassist wasn't bad either, and I can't forget how much he reminded me of AJ from Hotel of the Laughing Tree with his beard and winter hat, lol.

Single Channel Stereo are on Facebook and have a Bandcamp Page Here . Although I'm pretty sure many of the songs they played last night are not on there, but some are on an EP that was released just in December it appears. I definitely am going to keep tabs on SCS and anticipate something more soon, along with hopefully seeing them live again at some point. Maybe they could get on a bill with Brice Plays Drums or The Royal Veil or another local Minnesota band I enjoy.

So, then Bend Sinister went on, and I was getting goosebumps maybe even more than at the studio earlier. Dan sort of mentioned before playing "Dr. Lee" and "Time Breaks Down" it was for me. Which was totally unexpected, but I was thrilled of course. I mean sure, I could pick out my ultimate set list and have told them about it, but I know set lists are often about what the band enjoys playing and can play. And often about music the band members currently playing live, wrote and recorded themselves. So the BROKEN CITY stuff and even the STORIES OF BROTHERS music, is older music for them.

Many of the Small Fame tunes work really well live. I'd say "My Lady" is even more badass then the studio version. And every track they did, I enjoyed.

But hopefully this won't be the last time I get to see them. I may even have to finally make a trek up to Winnipeg if their touring doesn't come to Minnesota of course. We'll see. And those new tunes may get recorded and released soon, perhaps later this year depending on their schedule. They played SXSW of course, and I hope they left a good impression like many bands do there (Local Natives, Warpaint, Cloud Cult..just from memory). Their tour takes them to Canada (including Winnipeg, lol).

Bend Sinister - Black Magic Woman LIVE (with an Orchestra)

This is phenomenal. I'd love to hear more of their tunes like this (maybe I'll mention it to the band on Wednesday, lol).

Bend Sinister - March 2013 North American Tour (Chicago 3/20)

I'll add more later hopefully. Megabus ticket on that Wednesday to Chicago is $42 roundtrip. The Township Club/Bar is 2 miles from my brother's place.

Bucket List band could finally be checked off. 7+ years of wanting to see Bend Sinister may finally end in a little less than 2 months.

12. Quest for Love

As a longtime fan of Bend Sinister, I am definitely not disappointed with this record. The songwriting is more concise and shorter overall, but at the same time, most of the songs on Small Fame have something to enjoy. And it flows pretty well, much like their last record Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers. Is it as progressive rock influenced as their other records? maybe not. I'm not sure it matters though, as Bend Sinister are now more than before, only part prog, but also a big part power-pop and classic rock among other styles. And I guess overall, for the better, as if they stayed totally progrock, I'm not sure how long they'd be around or even have as good a chance of finally catching on to a wider audience.

The biggest highlights are the opening "Rush meets Hall & Oats"-inspired number "She Don't Give it Up," "My Lady" with it's call and response vocals ("Has anybody seen my lady?..[yelling] Has anyone seen my girl!") along with a great Hammond organ part. "Hot Blooded Man" is one of the others I always look forward to, as it has this badass groove to which both the keyboards, guitar lines and vocals all help create. It changes times, has a great call-and-response type verses, and like many other great Bend Sinister tunes, it seems to shift gears rather well. I actually think it's one of those songs that I could go for it going on for twice as long as it is. I imagine when the band plays it live, they have, as it sounds like something that would go over rather well live. The high energy is impossible to ignore.

Of course the 1st track I fell in love with the most "Quest for Love" still remains the best tune, although like "Hot Blooded Man" if it were longer, it might be even greater. That being said, it is a great example of doing prog in a short/radio-length-friendly way. Sound-wise, there isn't another tune on this record, or maybe any song they've done, that it compares to. But I can't deny, it does remind me a lot of Iron Maiden among a few others. The tight guitar and keyboard lines, with Dan Moxon's almost chanty-like vocals just seem to channel that "epic" feel, idea, etc.

The drum work on this record is consistent, and by that I mean, you always notice Jason Dana. Every track pretty much, although he also has played on everything Bend Sinister's has released since Stories of Brothers. I just think his work on here stands out, and despite the fact the heart of their sound is very pop-oriented, he's both technical and tight enough to not sound like a session drummer.

I suppose one thing that is worth adding is while every other track I enjoy.

"Give it a Rest" and "Got You On My Mind" both of I knew/had heard and liked from the On My Mind EP released in March.

"Man of Faith and Virtue," is playful and includes a lead keyboard part which is sort of trademark of the Bend Sinister sound.

"Don't You Know" has a fun, upbeat, driving chorus "Don't You Know Why I'm Still in Love With You"

"One Shot" has this almost Billy Joel-like chorus to it("Big Shot"?).

"Black Magic Woman" (no, it's nothing like the Santana tune) is sort of a darker slow, bluesy ballad, that would almost fit well on a Led Zeppelin album ("Since I've Been Loving You"?).

"She Lost Her Rock and Roll" includes this big, grandiose Vocal and guitar interplay. As much as "Quest for Love" almost defines the word "epic," this tune almost could be described in that way as well, and works rather well in transition to the closing track.

The one likely skippable tune for me is "We Know Better" which I'm struggling with to like. The chorus just is bland and it gets repeated over and over. I can't help but wonder if "Things Will Get Better" off 2010's Spring Romance EP, would have gone *better* here. But I suppose given that song is older, the band might not have felt it belongs with this newer collection of songs.

All in All, this record is a top 5-10 Album Index contender, although I'd be lying if I didn't rank this record slightly below both Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers and Through the Broken City. But both of those records I love immensely, and like the new House of Fools and Ramona Falls (and Emanuel & the Fear it appears), this is by no means a disappointing record.

Now whether it finally enables them to breakthrough in America, it is up in the air. But maybe the biggest thing is for that, Dan Moxon mentioned this is their 1st album that will be receiving distribution in the US. And they plan to finally tour in the States this coming Fall (likely East Coast since they already are confirmed for the CMJ festival again, in NYC), and then hopefully at least 1 somewhat widespread tour in early to mid 2013. Because honestly, I think it is kind of Do or Die for them. This may be their "One Shot" as their song says. But at least they are finally going to get a shot. If their tour doesn't hit Minnesota, I can't see myself not traveling to Chicago or another city to finally get to see them after 6-7 years of wanting to.

Here's their latest video for "Don't You Know" and another recent video for an unreleased/b-side with the preorder "The Road Divided"

Bend Sinister - Small Fame (2012)

7/3/12 8:57AM

The whole thing is now streaming on the
Canadian Broadcasting Company's website.

Damn, if only I had seen this before I left for work, or last night. I guess I'll have to wait until late tonight to check it out. A nice 4th of July surprise, for a band whose never toured the Red, White and Blue at this point. Ironic?

Vancouver progressive rock band Bend Sinister is releasing its highly anticipated new album on July 10, and CBC Music has an exclusive stream of the album all this week. Small Fame is the band’s first full-length album since their 2008 release, Stories of Lovers, Tales of Lovers. Small Fame follows Bend Sinister’s traditional brand of progressive pop rock blended with classical melodies. The album is sure to be your summer anthem; it will carry you through the hot days of July and have you hitting replay all through August.

For the last three years, the band has been relentlessly touring and releasing music. They have released two EPs and one full-length album. The band’s songs are infused with their musical influences, such as Queen and Supertramp, but it’s their original sounds that carry the band to an artistic high. At the heart of the band is Dan Moxon, who can be seen sitting in front of a piano, behind a set of drums or annihilating a microphone. It’s Moxon’s falsetto that provides the final topping for a summer album.

Small Fame was recorded at Fader Master and Mushroom Studios in Vancouver and was produced by Shawn Cole (You Say Party, Yukon Blonde).

Bend Sinister tour dates

July 19, Vancouver, The Venue, Small Fame CD/Vinyl release show with Fields of Green and Young Pacific.

July 20: Kamloops, Cactus Jacks.

July 21: Vancouver, Khatsalano Festival.

And here's a special treat:

"A Bend in the Road", a 60-minute documentary about independent bands touring Canada, directed by Dan Moxon (Bend Sinister), Edo Van Breemen (Brasstronaut) and Nicholas Friesen (Winnipeg filmmaker)

not bad, although not catching my attention as much as "She Don't Give it Up." But it may with time and hearing it with the full record.

I took the plunge on both the Vinyl and compact disc. I suppose it would be great to purchase some t-shirts or other things as well from them, but then again, seeing them live might help.

story from exclaim.ca

When Bend Sinister announced their On My Mind EP earlier this year, they hinted that a full-length would soon be on the way. Sure enough, the Vancouver prog-pop unit just confirmed that their latest long-player is called Small Fame and that it will be out on July 10 through File Under: Music.

Like the On My Mind EP, Small Fame was recorded by producer Shawn Cole (You Say Party, Yukon Blonde) at Fader Master and Mushroom studios in Vancouver.

Two of the album's 12 songs come from the prior EP ("Give It a Rest" and "Got You on My Mind"), while the other ten tracks are new. According to a press release, these tunes give Bend Sinister a chance to "carry out their traditional brand of classic rock influenced song writing while maintaining a uniquely modern twist throughout the entire album."

Check out the opening track "She Don't Give Up" at the bottom of the page.

SPRING NEWS UPDATE
APRIL 23, 2012
hello everyone. so after taking a bit of a break thru April after our great and successful Canadian tour this march, we’re back at it! On APRIL 26th we are happy to have been invited to play a sold out PECHA KUCHA night at the vogue theatre. This is a great event where people come to give short presentations of all sorts. We are also going to be performing MAY 6TH at zulu records as part of a collaborative art project called PLAYGROUND. During the event we will be performing a rendition of our song THE ROAD DIVIDED from the latest EP with around 150 people singing and playing along. if you’d like to get more info, you have to RSVP to the event to get in, which is well worth your while, considering there is free beer! Check out the first lesson plan here:

In other news we are happy to announce that we will be releasing a full length album titled SMALL FAME, and it will come out July 10th on vinyl!!! Finally.

Nice to see, and it's coming on July 10th; although I and others I'm sure knew this was coming soon. The thing I don't quite get is I am not seeing it on their Facebook nor Twitter pages anywhere, lol. Not on File Under: Music, their record label in Canada, Facebook page either. There's a lot of stuff about tours and a song competition they are looking for votes for, but nothing about this new upcoming record, Small Fame, from what I have looked at.

Oh, well, hopefully something will show up soon. Regardless, I'm pretty jazzed about this. Of course they released a new EP just in March titled On My Mind that more info was posted in this blog here.

As always, when more info is available, this entry should be bumped and edited.
