REVERE - Rest in Peace

So British Band Revere have finally called it a day.
They sent me a package with some stuff from their last campaign which included a signed Setlist from a concert in 2015, and then a signed copy of their latest release, Man of Atom.

And for that I want to thank Revere for sure.

Stephen Ellis specifically as he included a nice note, thanking me in the package.

(I'll try and show it on YouTube hopefully soon)

This news of their ending while is sad, I guess I can't be highly surprised by save for the fact they've been a band for so many years (15) and yet have always been particular on how often and what they release. But many of their peers retired long before them (Pure Reason Revolution, Oceansize namely), so it was odd how they managed to stay afloat longer. I suppose a band like Archive or Biffy Clyro still are thankfully, although at least with Biffy, they did gain a large following in recent years, so that makes some sense.

I guess I've grown to see them as a live band who only recorded material when it was fully ready to record (and they had the funds of course). Why they have a limited body of work, even though they were a band for 15 years. 4 EP's, many singles and 2 full-lengths.

But their full-length albums, Hey! Selim and My Mirror / Your Target I enjoy both certainly. Their style of chamber/baroque pop/rock I always have liked and thought of with some of the other artists in the last 10-15 years using that kind of instrumentation and approach to creating music.

It is a little sad that I never got to see them live, but they are from across the pond, and while they seemed to gain a following over there, the US and North America, it was mostly blogs like my own here that found them on their radar.

So the story goes.

Hopefully the members will have future musical work to check out down the line, but until then, we do have a new video off Man of Atom, "Sonder" done by Ryan Pearce aka Man of Atom
to check out.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce our  decision for  REVERE to call it a day. After more than 15 years together, and as many lineup changes, we feel the time has come for us to focus on other musical projects.
We feel immensely proud of what we've achieved in more than 15 years together as a band, leaving behind two albums, a handful of EPs and a large collection of singles. This has also been done without any major support from a record label (although we must give shoutouts to Albino, Gift Of The Gab and V2). We were often asked why we were still together and the truth was that we just enjoyed writing and playing music together. We felt that what we were doing was a little bit different and exciting and enough of you agreed with us to keep us going. Thank you for that! Your support has meant everything to us!

Behind the scenes, we especially want to thank Dave Jewerén Moore whose brilliant production skills and endless patience helped mould us into the band we eventually became. Also Ryan Pearce, whose visuals and music videos added further layers of meaning and excitement to our live shows. It is fitting that our last video, for Sonder, was also made by Ryan and is a video we are especially proud of.

Archive - The False Foundation (2015-2016)

I haven't checked this one out just yet, but with another calendar year, and another Archive album coming, there's no questioning how prolific they are. I checked an interview with Steven Wilson per YouTube the other day and he mentioned how up until the early 90's, artists would always release at least 1 album a year. So it's not that weird. Kevin Gilbert used to say the same thing. A professional musician should be able to spend 12 months writing/recording etc to release an album (10 songs I recall he mentioned).

That being the case, the best thing Archive has done in recent years, I think was Axiom and Controlling Crowds before that. I did enjoy Restriction from 2015 as well, although the whole electronic/industrial thing I think maybe is a work in progress for them, in that I am waiting for them to put out something better. Although CC is 1 of my favorite records of the last 5-10 years certainly.

The video below for "Driving in Nails" and the Preorder for the October 7th release is linked on their site.

Archive - Restriction (2014-2015)

12/1/14 6:25PM

Archive released the soundtrack LP Axiom last Summer, so to see them put something else out soon just caught me by surprise. Although, the Axiom soundtrack wasn't incredibly long, and they tend to write and record a lot of stuff in spurts, hence the 3 or 4 versions of Controlling Crowds?

I should be checking out those 3 early shared tracks below sometime this evening (haven't yet, gf is playing a marathon of her/my new favorite YouTube channel Swoozie per a sample from a WatchMojo list).

But certainly I am excited to hear this record, which is released on January 12th.

Archive - Axiom [Album + Film] (2014)

5/26/15 9:38PM

Here's what I posted on Facebook a bit ago.

This new Archive record "Axiom" is really good. Wonderful atmosphere with the textures and heavy ambience. I think I already enjoy it more than their last LP. I want to find a way to see the film even more now.

Archive have impressed me again with this new Soundtrack/LP of theirs "Axiom". These guys continue to do great work and the music world have next to no idea who they are (for better or for worse).
I just hope I can find a way to see the film this soundtrack is for at some point.

Great record.  Not long, but long enough. The 10-minute instrumental track may be one of the best pieces the band has ever made. It's like Sigur Ros or something, in that it creates this mood that I could listen to for a lot long than the main theme goes for.

Is it an album of the year candidate? unlikely, but given this year has been pretty spotty, this record may find it's way pretty high on my year end write-up.

http://archiveofficial.com/

I didn't realize they had this coming, and coming so soon, although Archive are somewhat prolific, so it doesn't seem so surprising. This seems obviously, more in the soundtrack vein than anything else, and dark thematically. Regardless, it's a new Archive record and even a film that I'd like to check out if possible (given it's International, who knows how easily it'll be made available and when i.e...I could be sitting here a year or 2 from now and not been able to see it).

They just shared the video for "Distorted Angels" below, and there's a trailer of sorts on their website linked above.

May 12th is the release date per that website listed below.

edit: 1 of the trailers is also linked below.

We are delighted to be able to share with you the tracklisting and cover artwork for our next album Axiom. In contrast to previous albums Axiom consists of one continuous 40-minute piece of music that evolves through seven tracks:

“Distorted Angels”
“Axiom”
“Baptism”
“Transmission Data Terminate”
“The Noise of Flames Crashing”
“Shiver”
“Axiom (Reprise)”.

“Recording the bells at Greenwich church certainly set the ball rolling to what became Axiom,” recalls Darius.
“I'm not a hundred per cent sure what I had in mind when I decided we should record the bells, but I just felt it would be important somehow in the genesis of the new record. The music came first; the album was written seamlessly, with one idea falling into another, one singer falling into another. It's a musical journey with a clear beginning and end, but you can certainly pull out six parts that could be distinguished as songs."

The central theme of the bells was the starting point in creating ‘Axiom The Film’. NYSU director Jesus Hernandez:
“We saw our role as composers of a kind of visual soundtrack for the music. Our challenge was to translate the band's script into images”

'Axiom' the film will receive it's world premier at the London Sundance Film Festival on Friday 25th April. General tickets, which include the film screening and admission to our Brooklyn Bowl gig, go on-sale at 9am tomorrow and can be purchased here:
http://www.sundance-london.com/

We will then perform the album live to accompany the film at a one-off worldwide exclusive performance at the London Roundhouse on 29th May. This will be our biggest UK show to date, following sold-out shows in the capital last year at Heaven and KOKO, so make sure you are there to share this event with us.
http://www.gigsandtours.com/event/archive/roundhouse/750745

The film will also be shown in 5.1 surround sound in select cinemas across Europe to coincide with the album’s release. Both album and film will be released worldwide on the band’s own Dangervisit label (through PIAS/Cooperative Music) on 12th May.

The Age of Rockets - Adults (2013)

7/8/13 6:18PM

I got it as a download today given I pledged $25 or more to the Kickstarter. CDs will be coming later to the $100 Kickstarters and I guess even later (like 2014?) for the standard version.

But here's the breakdown. I sort of understand why he shared the Tracklist so long ago (2012?) . In a way, it's like what Archive or Biffy Clyro have done (among many others) where they release demos and other songs/other version of songs. The new Ours album I guess very well could be including more version like this.

But, this was intentional. What I'm struggling a bit with is how I want to listen to this. Initially I'll probably just play the 3 "versions" as they are, and then maybe highlight specific versions of each track and try and then combine them on a CDR. I say that, as I am a little challenged compared to most people, including who The Age of Rockets intended this album's experiment to be for, as in FOR AN MP3 PLAYER/PLAYLIST to be played either at random between all 3 versions, or just a mixing and matching AMONG ALL 30 OF THE TRACKS AMONGST ALL 3 VERSIONS.

But unless I use a 3-cd changer and hit random, which I don't foresee unless I'm at my girlfriend's who has 1 or in her car, I am likely going to have to CUSTOM MAKE my own versions/order of the tracks.

Which I guess is sort of 1-of if not the whole point of this experiment.

Now, the music itself or course needs to hold up and justify it, and I think it may, but it's funny how this is a format or listening to music that in some ways, actually DOES REQUIRE you to listen carefully.

But that should be at least part of the fun of it.

The Record is done. It will be out September 1st (my birthday) Kickstarter kickers will get it this week.

sadly we won't ever play again and this is the last record. We managed to do 3 records and never have a release party!

Good News and Bad, but not surprising news.

It took nearly 4 years, but this sucker is finally coming out. Bittersweet I suppose.

If I have 1 regret, I was looking at my Kickstarter contribution, I gave $25.

A digital download of the entire 30 track album as soon as it's finished. You will be one of the first people to receive the album. Probably about a month before it goes up on itunes! Also the name and link on our website!

But it appears in order to have received the physical CD(s), I would have to have contributed $100, lol. Now I remember why I didn't.

I guess if in some way, this album is released in physical form to the public, I may have to purchase a copy for an affordable rate ($30 or $40 perhaps?). I asked them on Facebook about the format, so hopefully that'll be more clear soon.

3/27/12 3:33AM

I was holding off posting this until more of the final details went public, but I suppose it doesn't make much difference at this point. Here's the cover art that is now public. And the track list for the 1st CD is below. Hopefully more details will come soon, namely a release date (or a Kickstarter pledge email download/mail-out date)

I do know, in all likelihood, this album will be the last The Age of Rockets record, for many years if ever. But regardless, if this album is amazing, it will hopefully be worth it.

facebook announcement

As I think I posted in earlier entries, this 30-track, 3-cd concept record is coming, and for those who pledged to their kickstarter for this album and perhaps the pre-order, they should be receiving an email download link sometime around X-Mas.

In the mean time, I would definitely recommend hearing some of the clips Andrew Furtal has shared on their tumblr page which have totally intrigued me, maybe even more than their previous records.

The only thing to be a little down about is what Andrew posted on facebook the other day

Losing my mind working on the new record. I will be very surprised if I have another Age of Rockets record in me after this.

which I honestly don't blame him and the large amount of time and work that he has had to put into this album/project I would think once its done, he and the band will want to take a long break from recording. But then again, time can recharge/replenish and change your mindset.

5/24/12 2:10PM

Pretty excited for this as Controlling Crowds was awesome, and a great comeback of sorts back in 2009. The Orchestra inclusion adds intrigue among other things just reading that write up from their facebook page.

August 27th for the LP, and July 2nd for the EP. Great these guys are still active compared to say their UK college-prog contemporaries like Oceansize and Pure Reason Revolution.

ARCHIVE are set to return with the epic and beautiful new album With Us Until You’re Dead.

Produced by longtime collaborator Jerome Devoise, the album will be released on the band's own Dangervisit Records on 27th August 2012.
Part-orchestral, part-electronic, part-soulful, part-progressive and wholly emotion-soaked, the album is a cinematic and restlessly inventive landscape.

Talking about the new album Darius said “We've always written songs that focused on social and political issues but for this album I really wanted the songs to be more personal - love songs basically. But coming at the subject matter in that non-formatted Archive way.”

“I grew up a massive Otis Redding fan and I wanted to bring some of that soulfulness to the songs, but at the same time to make them twisted and experimental.”

First taster from the album comes in the form of the 'Wiped Out / Violently EP' released on July 2nd. Featuring remixes from the likes of Man Without Country, Sei A and Rosko John, the EP will be released on 12" and download formats.

'Violently' (“one of the darkest and most powerful songs we've ever done” Darius reckons) features new vocalist Holly Martin and comes with a suitably dark promo video directed by legendary graphic designer Brian Cannon who created album covers for Oasis and The Verve amongst others.

Archive - Controlling Crowds (2009)

bumped 10/16/09 7:32AM

Controlling Crowds Part IV

1 Pills
2 Lines
3 The Empty Bottle
4 Remove
5 Come On Get High
6 Thought Conditioning
7 The Feeling Of Losing Everything
8 Blood In Numbers
9 To The End
10 Pictures
11 Lunar Bender

mostly new songs. I need to revisit CC's again just to get an idea if it should remain as high on my 2009 Albums Index as it is. But adding this is something to consider I suppose. A stream is nice, but hopefully this will leak soon too. Street Date is soon (if not already) but a US release of it or ANY other of Archive's albums is puzzling.

link to buy it on their official site.

original 3/28/09 2:35PM

the whole thing can be streamed on their myspace right now:
http://myspace.com/archiveuk

I'd recommend this album as it reminds me at times of Woven's "Designer Codes" album from last year. It often seems like a 76minute soundtrack like DC's was. It's more of a departure from some of Archive's work in the past like "You All Look the Same to Me" and "Noise." There's isn't as much prog rock, and more trip-hop. But the songs are still there, and it consistently keeps your attention, that it doesn't seem as long as the 1hour and change it clocks in at.

Here's my notes I wrote down the other day (sorry for the caps)

1 Controlling Crowds - "I'm sick of the controlling crowds, here they come"
2 Bullets1st single. Catchy.
3 Words on Signs - "There's no-bod-dee here for me right now-ow-ow"
4 Danger Visit - "so much writing on the wall" 10x's...sweet bass-line..nice effects on the pedals and repeated vocal-choruses "sing along, sing along, sing along, sing it"
5 Quiet Time - hip-hop..ambient wall-of-sound almost like Marillion..great build of energy
6 Collapse Collide - sad melody reminds me of Neverending White Lights..female vox..GREAT WALL-OF-SOUND AMBIENCE THAT BUILDS..GREAT ATMOSPHERE
7 Clones - NICE GUITAR RIFF/SYNTH COMBO W/ DISTORTION GOING IN AND OUT
8 Bastardised Ink - hip-hop..LIKE THE RHYTHM ON THE SYNTHS..VOX ARE BORDERLINE SINGING
9 Kings of Speed - ANOTHER NICE PIECE THAT BUILDS TEXTURALLY AND W/ LAYERS..ELECTRONIC DRUMS? OR DRUM MACHINE?..SOME BELLS AT THE END
10 Whore - FEMALE VOX..PIANO..NICE HUMMING IN THE OUTRO
11 Chaos - GREAT VOCAL HARMONIES W/ PIANO..THEN STRINGS LATER..EPIC BALLAD
12 Raised to the Ground - HIP-HOP..NICE TEXTURES AND DISTORTION WITH THE SYNTHS..FAT SYNTHS..REMINDS ME OF DJ SHADOW
13 Funeral - MOODY ENDING PIECE

A LOT OF THIS ALBUM SOUNDS LIKE REMIXES

82/100 and 5th place currently on the '09 AotY race.

March: Bands, Prog Rock info, Concert Calendar

The new U2 album "No Line on the Horizon" I like. About 6 or 7 tracks especially I think work well. Not an AotY candidate or anything, but it's a nice change to being more experimental. Change in production and textures. I dig the piano and strings among others. The new single "Get On Your Boots" however, is probably the worst song on it, lol.

Doves hitting The Varsity Theater in May makes the upcoming concert plate a bit more frequent in April and May.

March:
20th Bridge Over Troubled Water
30th Bloc Party @ First Ave (maybe)

April
5th Fair to Midland (The Rock)
10th dredg (Varsity)

29th Mastodon (The Fine Line)

May
3rd Leonard Cohen (Orpheum Theater) time/$ permitting
15th Protest the Hero (Station 4)
28th Doves (Varsity)

I'm sure I'm missing a few dates.

Classic Rock (magazine) Presents: PROG

I'm definitely curious about this new magazine, as I have enjoyed Classic Rock Magazine's special "Prog" issues in the past. So it appears they're going to try to do a semi-regular publication on it.

CLASSIC ROCK PRESENTS PROG

The already burgeoning prog rock scene receives another welcome boost with the announcement of the imminent arrival of Classic Rock Presents Prog, a new quarterly journal of progressive music that's set to offer prog rock fans a wealth of coverage of their favourite bands, artists and music.

Issue one sets out its stall by covering true giants of the genre like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes and ELP all the way through to modern day protagonists such as Dream Theater, Coheed & Cambria, Queensrcyhe and Porcupine Tree. New acts such as The Reasoning, Frost* and Demians find themselves nestling alongside established prog heroes like Marillion, Rush and Asia.

Packed with exclusive interviews, news and reviews, the whole spectrum of astounding sounds and amazing music gets the Classic Rock treatment in March. Issue One hits the news stands March 25. It's a date you don't want to miss.

Oceansize's Australian Tour

I guess supporting Cog is a big reason how they are able to afford it.

Thu 4/06/2009 NSW Fremantle Metro
Fri 5/06/2009 SA Adelaide The Gov
Sat 6/06/2009 VIC Melbourne Hi Fi
Sun 7/06/2009 VIC Melbourne Hi Fi

Thu 11/06/2009 QLD Brisbane Hi Fi H
Fri 12/06/2009 NSW Newcastle Panthers
Sat 13/06/2009 NSW Sydney Selinas

my curiosity is, if they can afford that, perhaps they could afford something similar soon in the US.

Archive's new album is called "Controlling Crowds" and is listed to be released on March 30th.

The 1st single "Bullets" (youtube link above) I definitely like and am looking forward to this album a lot more than I expected. "Lights" from 2006 was okay, but not of the quality of "Noise" and "You All Look the Same to Me."

Fields album "Hollow Mountains" I've seen 2 release dates listed being March 2nd and March 9th. And of course "March." But with no track-list nor artwork, and some mention on their last.fm page about it's status and the band lacking a record label I guess, it's release date/time is really uncertain.

Kiss Kiss, Local Natives, even dredg to a point, kind of are (or were) in a similar spot. Local Natives at least, last night on the NBC show "Chuck" had 1 of their new songs "Airplanes" played for a short while in the background. Being a Street Team member and genuine hugely optimistic fan of theirs, my jaw literally dropped to the floor hearing that. The point being, they are a fucking great band, and more people should and I gotta believe will like them. Many of those Fleet Foxes ass-kissers (among others..Panda Bear, Animal Collective, Miracle Fortess even) are gonna find out when they get the exposure they deserve. They're just too damn good not to.

Water & Bodies began recording last week, what is I guess to be a 7-song EP that likely will be released digitally. CD and/or Vinyl as well, most likely available through their website and @ Concerts directly from the band. I'm extremely excited to hear these songs recorded after hearing samples live the past few months. I realize this is not Kaddisfly but it may be something even better for all anyone knows. And maybe best, going directly through them, it'll be available rather soon. Like perhaps by April or even earlier.

Soundscape's "Grave New World" I will be hearing in the coming weeks. It's been a 10-year wait, but I am without question overjoyed to finally get to hear it. Expect some kind of in-depth review on this blog among other spots soon after. My s/n on many sites isn't "Soundcape(MN)" for nothing of course :P. "Discovery" is a life-changing record for myself anyway. If GNW is even 1/10 of that, it'll be an AotY contender (to be honest, it already is).

dredg's new album "The Pariah, The Parrot, the Delusion" is coming out on May 19th (same day as the US release of OSI, wow!)

cover art:

Mew's new album is expected in June.

King's X are headlining 3 Rivers Progressive Rock Festival I guess. Honestly, this is pretty surprising. Maybe it's a $ thing or I'm totally off on their current approach live. I would never expect them to play a "Prog" festival. But then again, many years ago Porcupine Tree did as well. Hopefully they'll do some more touring in 2009 and comeback to Minneapolis, a place they used to never skip (I saw them 10 times from 1996 to 2005 for example).

Muse new album to have a heavy Classical music influence?

bbc article

By Georgie Rogers
6 Music News reporter

The band have their own recording studios at Lake Como in Italy
Muse's new studio album could see them move away from their traditional rock sound to create a more "orchestral", classical offering.

Frontman Matt Bellamy said: "There's some really brilliant songs coming out, some of our best material I think."

The follow-up to 2006's Black Holes And Revelations is expected later this year coinciding with an Autumn tour.

Last month, the Devon band picked up the NME award for best live band for the second year in a row.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Bellamy revealed the record's sound could see the band abandoning their traditional rock leanings completely. We'll be knocking on Classic FM's door, you know

Muse frontman, Matt Bellamy

"A symphonic album has turned up here, like a full collaboration with an orchestra," he said.

"There's definitely a few things on the album which are segueing into each other and it's all very orchestral, but that could take over the album, so it could actually be kind of classical act basically, and move away from rock all together.

"We'll be knocking on Classic FM's door, you know?"
