The media market is huge, thus the need for a media review market.
This is our little contribution to that field.

PROG Awards and PROG Magazine Video [Part 1?]
So to follow up my sharing of the stream of the 5th Annual PROG awards from a few days ago, I have meant to make an actual video about PROG Magazine and the Awards show.
And truth be, I didn't have down a laundry list of names to bring up on a dime like I would, which is why I may actually make another video or 2 about this hyperbole soon.
That being said, the jist of my rant is in there and supports my feelings about PROG magazine and the Awards.
Perhaps on the next 1, I will try and include some props aka the magazines, etc.

I dig the video/1st single below "We Are." The jury will still be out with this record until I hear it with headphones as the songs from Sound Awake sounded great per radio streams, and then the terrible mix from the cymbals was noticed with headphones and my opinion totally changed about those songs and the album.
But beyond that issue, I can't help but be rather jazzed to hear this album. Cool cover art fwiw.
July 19th is when it drops down under. North America?

For those who don't know, Density Records are part of the Workhorse

friends of Team Vool for a while. We hung with them at one of our LA

to sign with a label whose back catalogue you want to steal! Here's
hoping we are good for some freebies now...
You can pre-order the Deluxe (CD version) of Asymmetry in North America from the Workhorse Music webstore here. The
pre-order includes the 90-minute live DVD 'Live at the Forum' featuring
a full concert from The Forum in Melbourne, Australia.

With over 250,000 albums sold to date across their acclaimed 2005 debut, Themata, and 2009’s ground breaking follow-up, Sound Awake, Karnivool established themselves as one of the most vital forces in progressive modern music. Now a major international draw, appearing at festivals such as The Big Day Out, Sonisphere (France), Download (UK), SXSW (US) and Hurricane (Germany), and gaining high praise from international press titans such as Rolling Stone, Billboard Magazine, Kerrang! and Rocksound, Karnivool have belied expectation again with album number three, the brazen and introspective, Asymmetry.
This expansive new work was designed in the band’s Perth studio over two years, before in late 2012, the Karnivool caravan headed across the continent to bunker down with legendary producer, Nick DiDia (Rage Against The Machine, Mastodon) at Byron Bay’s Studios 301

New single "Lodestar"..par for the course. and the official video:
Tour coming with Closure in Moscow and Sleep Parade. I'm not a fan of either (think they both sound too derivative), but some of the DLC fans probably are.

6/27/13 9:30PM
Release date August 9th with the 1st single "Lodestar" in less than a week.
Mildly intrigued. This Is the Warning had some outstanding tracks like "The Drum," but it also had some minor issues like a samey-ness at points and compression of the cymbals at points.
Along with Asymmetry from Karnivool, this is among the anticipated from down under this year. Especially with the present state of Fair to Midland.
UNFD is proud to announce the release of Dead Letter Circus‘ second album “The Catalyst Fire” on Friday 9 August. The first taste of music from the record will be lead single “Lodestar”, which will be premiered on triple j‘s “Drive With The Doctor” on Thursday 4 July at 4pm. “Lodestar” will be available exclusively through iTunes the following day.
View a trailer for the album now at the UNFD YouTube Channel.
“The Catalyst Fire” is the follow up to Dead Letter Circus’ hit debut album “This Is The Warning”, which was released in 2010. “This Is The Warning” peaked on the ARIA Charts and was certified as a Gold record earlier this year. It was nominated for an ARIA Award and was voted as one of the triple j Hottest 100 Album of All Time, and catapulted the Brisbane five piece to the forefront of the Australian Rock world.
Dead Letter Circus have spent the last nine months writing and recording “The Catalyst Fire” with long-term producer and collaborator Forrester Savell. Comprising of 11 tracks, the album marks a clear progression of the traditional DLC sound, while retaining the energy and intensity they are known and loved for.
Wednesday 3 July will see the launch of a brand new Facebook App titled “Project Dead Letter: The Inner Circle”. The App, which was developed by UNFD, will deliver fans a piece of quality content related to the album every day, for the 45 days leading up to the release. The app will be free of charge, and each video, music download and image related to the project will be made available on desktop, tablet and mobile versions of the project.
Also launching on July 3 will be a series of different pre-order offers for fans. The UNFD store [store.weareunified.com] will have different bundle options including merchandise and vinyl packages to cater to all kinds of super fans. Each bundle is strictly limited.
JB Hi-Fi online [jbhifionline.com.au] will have exclusive signed copies of the album, while iTunes will have a pre-order with a bonus acoustic version of a track taken from the album.

This is just a heads up as they have an album that I have heard will be coming out this Summer or early Fall. August I recall being 1 of the projected months.
And they just posted this on Facebook.

Warpaint: New song + Bees (Live)
Well, like the Karnivool videos below, this is another Youtube video, with suspect quality. Although it sounds better than those 2 Karnivool videos, it's still a little hard to gauge how this song may be ultimately.
But, as a Warpaint fan like many, it's worth checking out.

Karnivool - 2 new live tracks
I honestly can't really determine a ton about these live videos, but I guess they are both new tunes. The compression and clipping of course, like a lot of live videos on Youtube, really detioriates to how good they may or may not be.
But, that being said, I know there's a ton of Karnivool fans online that are anxious as hell to hear anything from them, regardless of quality. And they may not necessarily remember they are playing live now, to check Youtube for videos just yet.

Gotye - Making Mirrors (2011)
In just reading a topic on 1 forum I go to regularly, I noticed a lot of discussion about this song "Somebody I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra) and this guy, who goes by the solo moniker Gotye. Which I want-to, and may always pronounced "Got-ya" but I guess it's pronounced "Gore-ti-yeah" lol.
Today I checked out Gore-tih-yeah's last album from 2006 Like Drawing Blood and liked a fair amount of it. Although I'm not sure how much he plays, and what is sampled or programmed. Namely the drums. But regardless, many good tunes on it, some instrumentals and cool sound clips from things. Almost reminding me of artists like DJ Shadow or even Stateless a bit. But also music like Peter Gabriel (an obvious, almost blatant comparison), Imogen Heap and maybe even George Michael on one or two tracks.
So, now as I'm home on a Friday afternoon, I'm checking out this new record of his, which I may not find to be as good as his last record, but I'm so new to his music, that's pretty unclear right now.
But I can say, that single is receiving a lot of praise, and frankly, for good reason. The lyrics and vocal lines especially are ear-worm worthy, and relate-able. It may end up as one of the best songs of 2011.
oh and also Karnivool, of all bands, covered one of his songs off Like Drawing Blood, "The Only Way" clipping cymbals and all. Not all that surprising though, given Ian Kenny of Karnivool also is in the more pop-oriented band Birds of Tokyo.

Fair to Midland - Arrows and Anchors (2011) (1.0)
7/11/11 12:30AM
here's the shitty web stream
I suppose for those who don't read the board religiously (who may only find this blog, which as I've said before, is rather scary and frightening to me, but 80-90% of those finding this blog I suspect are only looking for a leak/link which they won't find of course), it's worth passing along.
I could have a lot to say about this, good and/or bad. But as I posted on twitter, my fears and now just acceptance of the production issues with it sound true from it. No matter, I shall be purchasing a copy at Cheapo on Tuesday (along with the new Yes album, and cost-free thankfully, thanks to the gf's bday gift).
no matter how good or bad it is, i am excited about my 10th time seeing them in concert in Minnesota on Saturday July 16th. Despite the sauna at Station 4 and not spending the evening with my best friend on his bday (we'll be hanging during the day at least).
5/31/11 8:14PM
Samples of every song including the Bonus track "Pour the coal to Er"
Or someone needed to webrip them and throw them up on Youtube of course.
I'm gonna be brutally honest here. And this is a BROKEN RECORD of course since I've been suffering/saying/noticing etc yadayadayada this since 2008. Here's what I posted on the Fans forum a bit ago.
CLIPPING FROM COMPRESSED SPLASH AND CRASH CYMBALS.
So many modern rock and metal albums have to varying degrees, this problem, that can stand out like nails on a chalkboard for me.
I sincerely hope (pray) the frequent cymbals clipping evidence on many of these is purely a result of the Compression from the mp3's. I.e. the final LOSSLESS versions, the tambourine-toned cymbals will be scarcely heard if at all.
I REALLY hope this album doesn't turn out like Karnivool's SOUND AWAKE.
But the jury is still out, as compressed samples from Amazon could quite possibly have something to do with that. However, the clipping is darn clear on the mp3 download of Amaraillo, so I'm not sure how much these clips on Amazon actually could have to do with it, which worries me :x
So, my prediction now, is the production at least on a percentage of this record, will hurt if not entirely ruin a number of these songs for me. O well, glad I'm aware of that now instead of when I 1st, 2nd, 3rd time hearing it.
But to say its Album of the Year chances has dropped a lot would be an understatement. So be it, I can't do anything about it now. I'm sure there will be a lot of music on it I'll love regardless. There was on Sound Awake as well, it still didn't avoid the Turkey Blog territory in 2009 though. I guess the jury will be deciding more of this stuff soon as the drop date is not much more than a month away. I'm skeptical many if anyone else will share the same issue with the cymbals as I do, like many didn't/haven't with Sound Awake of course.

Musical Chairs: nice added guitar solo, but not so nice tambourine-toned cymbals in spots. I'm hoping it's due to compression of the stream and now how the finished product will sound.

article
there's supposedly some video that confirms the release date of June 7th (same day as the The Dear Hunter The Color Spectrum EPs and Battles album Gloss Drop).
I'd love to find a link to said video, and when I finally do, I'll have to add it here. But this was announced last Friday I guess. I saw their post about the album titles that didn't make it, but it took me going to their fans forum to finally see it posted/confirmed officially, lol. Can you say CRYPTIC?
Well, regardless, the title is nice to be shorter. That article/interview with Darroh has me curious how different some of these songs will sound, even from the live versions. "Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow" in particular, they stress about.
But as far as the songs on it, 11 of these titles below, in all likelihood will be on it. here are are the bolded tunes in a playlist (assuming it's still up)
"Pour the Coal to 'Er"
"Bright Bulbs and Sharp Tools"
"A Loophole in Limbo"

Musical Chairs: nice added guitar solo, but not so nice tambourine-toned cymbals in spots. I'm hoping it's due to compression of the stream and now how the finished product will sound.

there's supposedly some video that confirms the release date of June 7th (same day as the The Dear Hunter The Color Spectrum EPs and Battles album Gloss Drop).
"Musical Chairs"
"Rikki Tikki Tavi"
"Uh-Oh"
"Coppertank Island"
"Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow"
"Bravo Sierra"
"The Greener Grass"
"The Dead Sea"
"Golden Parachutes"
"Whiskey"

Karnivool Live from "Moshcam" 6/25/2009
Watch Metro Theatre and other great gigs on Moshcam.
I haven't watched this yet, but it's a high quality recording I guess of a show from June 25th, 2009. Not long after the release of Sound Awake. 90 minutes or so?
All the people on the forums and message boards who have gone apeshit over Sound Awake should probably see this. Too bad I don't post on a lot of them anymore; but they should be able to find this here instead hopefully.

I guess it's worth passing along, even though I've posted before on his forum and/or here how his taste and mine have definitely gone in opposite directions overall, compared to 10, even 5 years ago. But, a few names on each I can claim to share. Karnivool maybe being one surprise. As I posted in that thread
it's amazing, I'd guess I saw more people check out Karnivool this year, more than any other year. Yet, in 2007 when Themata got distribution in the States, and last year when Sound Awake was originally released, I probably had to bump some topics (including other forums besides this one) 3, 4, 5 times just to get a response. Part of that could be the fact they played at SXSW and got more promotion in the US and Europe this year, and did more touring, more than any other.
I mean other than the 2 live shows I saw, I really didn't take-in much about them this year, but seemingly dozens if not 100's of people on the forums have caught on to them. It's too bad for me, as I still can't listen to Sound Awake all the way through. But 2011 there's supposed to be a new album coming, so hopefully myself and others interest will be carried over to when that record is released.
But the thing is, Mike never said A WORD about Fair to Midland that I recall. And Karnivool, outside of Australia and maybe New Zealand, are still not as big as FtM. But that's random luck I guess. The forum is probably not how Mike got introduced to Karnivool, but even if it was, he'll probably never admit to it. I just think more or less anyone whose a 'Vool fan has got to at least know/know-of Fair to Midland, if not regard them as close-to-as-good if not better.
Maybe in 2011, when the new FtM record finally comes, Mike and some others will catch-on more visibly, like the way the 'Vool did this year.
As far as the rest, namely not having a clue who this band Alpha Rev are, I'm curious about.

Fair to Midland + Karnivool 4/12/10 Maplewood, MN
It's too bloody late to really write up something in depth. Also this pathetic situation I can't get out of my head at this moment.

there are more trigger-happy asshole c's than I realized.
c: "how much have you had to drink?"
a:"nothing"
5mins later
c: "How much have you had to drink?"
a: "I've had nothing to drink. I'm sober"
c:"well your driving is horrendous. You might want to ride a bicycle"
a lot more to it, but the whole situation seemed unreal, comical, yet almost something just out of bad odds. It's hardly over though.
The 'Vool floored me pretty much live. Most of the Sound Awake songs they did really do work even better live. I suppose "New Day" still ends up dragging like the album version, but otherwise.
Setlist:
Simple Boy
Goliath
Cote
Set Fire to the Hive
All I Know
New Day
Roquefort
Themata
Themata they really bring out well live. Quite epic.

My 8th concert seeing Fair to Midland in 4 years in Minnesota (and they hail from Dallas, TX, 850 miles South of St.Paul) Fair to Midland always seem to change or add new things to their shows. Sometimes subtle, sometimes just new versions or variations.
setlist:
Walls of Jericho
Uh-Oh (new)
Kyla Cries Cologne
Upgrade^Brigade
Rikki Tikki Tavi (new)
Musical Chairs (new)
1 or 2 of these 3 new songs
-A Loophole in Limbo
-Bright Bulbs and Sharp Tools
-Mines (name may have more to it)
Seafarer's Knot
Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes
Dance of the Manatee
encore
April Fools and Eggmen
also very cool to learn. Fair to Midland are I guess now able, via the record label they are still with, Serjical Strike Records, receive distribution for their new releases from Rocket Science Distribution. So that is great to know and what it also means if all goes well:
a) the band hits the studio in or around September
b) the new album is released in January or (relatively) early 2011.
i only say this with vague words because me, and most music/entertainment fans know how easily this stuff can get delayed or pushed back. But it's been so long and the band have a ton of material, I would think they want to release something pretty soon. Who knows, maybe a single or ep in November or maybe that in January and the album is in March/April/May 2011.

Karnivool: US Tour March or April 2010?
they are already confirmed to play at South by Southwest in Austin, TX in March. Given the trek from down under (and the new album) a US tour would make a lot of sense.

Karnivool - All I Know (video)
new video. Nicely shot. What the video exactly means, I guess I *don't exactly know. Someone named Chris shot it. Suppose going over to the 'Vool forum I could find out who exactly that is.
edit: Chris Frey who also shot the "Set Fire to the Hive" video earlier this year.
The song, well in my whole *revisiting* phase now for the 2009 Index/Race, Sound Awake does probably deserve some of that. I'd be surprised if my feeling about it changes a ton, but I'd love to be wrong. This new video, for it's metaphors and whatnot, didn't hurt.
