The media market is huge, thus the need for a media review market.
This is our little contribution to that field.

Pretty & Nice - Golden Rules for Golden People (2013)
I've been meaning to post something about this band over the last week, but never got the chance to.
I was suggested this band Pretty and Nice by a new friend on Rateyourmusic.com who I've been suggesting music back and forth with.
He recommended this band to me after I was telling him about Apes and Androids. And I follow that to an extent, but actually there music reminds me more of sElf actually than Apes and Androids.
sElf and The New Pornographers, with a bit of a Post-Punk element sort of in the AandA's or Bloc Party vein at times. And I'm referring to just on this newest record of theirs Golden Rules For Golden People which was released in 2013.
They're also on Equal Vision Records, the same label The Dear Hunter is on, which makes me wonder if they'd ever get the chance to tour with them. Perhaps it will happen as they are based now in Boston (and originally from Vermont).
Definitely one of the best new bands I've discovered of late, and in the Power-Pop or experimental Pop style. This record is consistent track-2-track with really strong energy and melodies yet still having that quirky, left-of-center experimentation to it.
I want to now check out their other records of course, which they released 2 others previously. And I imagine since this dropped in 2013, Pretty and Nice could be coming out with something new soon, like in 2016 even.
edit: they also released an EP in 2014 titled Infinitely Forever which includes a couple of tracks on this record.

The New Pornographers - Brill Bruisers (2014)
7/16/14 10:00AM
New song/video "War on the East Coast."
6/10/14 12:41PM
per Their Facebook
PREORDER
Released on August 26th.
Opening/title track below. Honestly, it's not doing a ton for me, kind of like their last record Together from 2010. You'd think nearly 5 years or whatever, would supply some time to refine and perfect some better new tunes, and I am hoping just that, because other than Together, I find their catalog pretty consistently good. Twin Cinema and Challengers probably being my favorites.
I guess we'll see. Their tour isn't coming to Minneapolis, although the last show I saw them, was frankly, not the best concert that year as it was filled with some drunken frat boys who never seemed to shut up, near where I was sitting. In other words, their not coming here, I'm not incredibly down about.
But this record, I hold slight optimism for, and am glad to see them put out some new music after the members of course have focused on their solo career and "A" gigs, so-to-speak, the past few years.

1 Brill Bruisers
2 Champions of Red Wine
3 Fantasy Fools
4 War on the East Coast
5 Backstairs
6 Marching Orders
7 Another Drug Deal of the Heart
8 Born With a Sound
9 Wide Eyes
10 Dancehall Domine
11 Spidyr
12 Hi-Rise
13 You Tell Me Where

The Orion Experience - NYC Girl
This band was recommended to me by a friend of mine on twitter/facebook/lastfm named Sara. She is responsible for some other gem suggestions like Timmy Sean and Emanuel & the Fear among others.
Well, this song "NYC Girl" is catchy as all fuck. Unfortunately it's a couple of years old, coming off an an EP from 2011. And now this band The Orion Experience seem to be doing some different things in the vein of Rocky Horror Picture Show as more of a theatrical/live performance art almost, sort of focus.Although even with the teaser and website below, and a little turnover in membership? I don't know enough about them to know exactly if they are just doing this live spectacle, or still looking to record stuff like the music on the site and trailer, or NYC Girl and the other tracks on that EP.
They are from NYC anyway, which I don't think it's much of a coincidence, so many of these electro/artsy/dramatic/theatrical groups seem to be based there. And they also formed around the time many of the others I know did in 2005. Their 1st LP Cosmic Candy is quite different though, more straight Power-Pop; kind of similar to groups like The Apples in Stereo, The New Pornographers or even Fountains of Wayne, all of which do not come from NYC ironically.
None the less, I do like this band and will try and keep tabs on them. I just wonder if their future for recording music may not be as important as this "off-broadway" show of theirs which unless it tours nationally, I doubt I'd ever be able to see.

Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record (2010)
3/9/10 12:10AM
track list added below.
source
2/19/10 10:01PM

1 World Sick
2 Chase Scene
3 Texico Bitches
4 Forced to Love
5 All to All
6 Art House Director
7 Highway Slipper Jam
8 Ungrateful Little Father
9 Meet Me in the Basement
10 Sentimental X's
11 Sweetest Kiss
12 Romance to the Grave
13 Water in Hell
14 Me and My Hand
Hear the 1st single/song "World Sick"
I like it overall. It's more melodic; however the "post-rock" sound is more subdued from hearing that. People still need to understand BSS are in fact a "Post Rock" band. They're the kind of "Post Rock" that actually is interesting. But they still have inherently some of the qualities of "Post Rock" in their sound. Why most people don't refer to them as "Post Rock" is baffling to me. But so be it. To digress..
I'm not sure with less evidence of "Post Rock" in their sound (if the rest of this record sounds like this song) if that's better or worse. Please don't become 2010's Vomit Collective guys, I know you're sohh much better than to allow the shitsters overhype and kill your quality.
original 2/1/2010 11:51PM

Pukefork Media interview with Kevin Drew (not my former classmate)
same day as "Together" from The New Pornographers, lol. BSS and The New Porno's release new albums the same day. The 2 (primarily-based) Canadian quasi indie supergroups. And frankly, the 2 proggy indie bands I associate with eachother (maybe along with The Decemberists).
When more info is available, this posting of course will be bumped.
