REACT TO: Radical Research: Episode 10 GINNCORE

I want to say before getting into the Reaction-To, I am really glad they made this podcast about this style of rock music as I wish more podcasts, youtube videos, articles and discussion took place about it.

And I do enjoy both of their opinions and these discussions as I not only have checked out this one, but a few older ones (the 1 on Italian prog for example, and Ulver both were enjoyable discussion topics).

Radical Research Episode 10 Podcast Link

dismissed:

Protest the Hero-too metal/metalcore?

I could make this an extensive criticism if I wanted to and found the time, and even the fact they recorded their longest podcast at nearly 2 hours for this topic, but I will try and limit this Reaction-to as much as I can (or maybe do a 2nd? lol..more likely a spinoff and/or a podcast of my own which could go on for 2 hours as well, but I probably would burn out after no longer than 45 or 50 minutes only due to the fact I was just talking to myself for that long).

First off, I agree on the time frame for the most part, as the bands and this very hard to describe style of Rock and Pop music really came to be in the 2000's. Now semantics of course, but like words like "pretentious" and "listens"..using the term "Oughts/0ughts" is frankly poor use and rather annoying. It is only 1 level removed from "naughties/noughties/n0ughties" blech.

For the love of God, please Call the fucking decade "THE 2000's/TWO-THOUSAND's."

But of course they won't and so much media won't maybe for decades to come when they finally get it.

2nd point, "Ginncore" while they explained how the term came up per Hunter Ginn's name and they couldn't really find a good word describe these bands. I guess based on that, the style could be just called Allmediareviews-Rock or Allmediareviews-Rock for the 21st Century, lol.

It's purely arbitrary and more or less in no way describes the bands sound or even aesthetic really other than the word "core" referring to coming or having elements of Hardcore Punk Rock.

The bands also that fall-into "Ginncore" and don't? So Deftones, Glassjaw and Circa Survive do  but System of a Down and Oceansize do not? eh, okay.

I would argue being "progressive" or even having a "prog rock" sound/style/influence etc, SOAD and Oceansize find that territory A LOT MORE than those 3.

Cave In? meh, maybe. I can follow why some consider them having progressive elements, I just never could get fully into them. I recall liking either 1 of their EPs, or a few of the songs some of the Kaddisfly fans suggested. But then when I checked like Jupiter it may have been, I was a little underwhelmed. I dunno, they may be a band I could check out again and enjoy more.

I do like some of the names they brought up, the DNA having Faith No More and Jane's Addiction. And even Jeff's point about bands from the late 70's like 10cc, Crack the Sky? (I should hear more from them I guess) and some others who combined pop/power-pop with progressive and/or art rock well.

I.e. bands who weren't pure prog rock, but used it within their songwriting to be melodic and yet artsy.

Those traits didn't begin with Radiohead and Tool really..look at King's X or Jellyfish or Kevin Gilbert or XTC or Tears for Fears (even U2 in some ways), and yes, go back to the 70's, even some of the 60's to a point.

Art-Pop-Rock?

Maybe 1 good way ti describe this stuff is "Art Pop/Rock?"
and for the 2000's, call a lot of it Heavy Art Pop-Rock?

dunno.

The names they included, The Mars Volta, dredg, Three, Coheed, Fair to Midland, and Mew even who maybe a bit of an outlier among that group, all fit/make sense. However maybe not now, but later tonight, I will try and come out up with 10 or maybe even 20 others that I would consider essential among this stuff.

anticipate an EDIT?

I think 1 or 2 that totally would make sense are Oceansize and The Dear Hunter (and TREOS even). Why they didn't mention The Dear Hunter? maybe they don't like or even know them. And I suppose they also have found more attention in the 2010's (TWENTY-TENS) I guess. But this decade, they can be argued to among if not the most important band in this style (Heavy Art Pop/Rock or my term PCR=Progressive College Rock.......or PCPR= Progressive College Pop-Rock ?).

Also the lack of "Post Rock" (and "Math Rock") is surprising, but perhaps they will do another podcast about that or the umbrella of this style.

Okay, so I've selected 10-15 bands/artists of both decades this Century beyond the 6 names they included in their podcast that I consider essential (dredg, The Mars Volta, Mew, Coheed, Three and Fair to Midland).

Obviously there are many others I could include (The Decembersists, Karnivool, 22 and many more).
I guess I think of these artists as important and at least somewhat prolific other than say The River Empires

Words for Penga - Prose (2014-2015)

http://www.wordsforpenga.com/

Facebook
Twitter

Words for Penga are a relatively new progressive metal band from my home state of Minnesota. I guess they formed in Ely, MN, but have moved to the Twin Cities relatively recently.

Long story short: I happened to meet their guitarist Ben Balitch, of all places, walking my Fiancee's dog in her neighborhood. He and the woman he was with (girlfrend/fiancee/wife? unsure) were walking their dog, etc. And he made a comment on my The Reign of Kindo hoodie, etc, etc.

Anyway, so timing was pretty good as this debut album of his band Words for Penga literally was released like a week or so after I met him. And I have been slowly checking it out and probably more surprisingly, really digging a lot of it (my Minnesota biased could be included, but I really don't think it would matter where they are from actually).

Musically, Words for Penga and this debut album Prose I would describe as progressive metal of a sort. But not like Dream Theater or even that much like Between the Buried and Me who Ben mentioned they either get compared-to or lumped-in with.

I would maybe compare them to East of the Wall (something like The Apologist) and some others. Their lead singer reminds me somewhat of Daron from System of a Down when he's singing clean, although I suppose you could say he has a bit of the Grunge/Post-Grunge style in his voice, but at the same time, I am beginning to appreciate his vocals the more I hear them. And the screams also do work well, and I suppose that is one reason I thought of East of the Wall.

They use saxophone in spots, which while it seems to be becoming more common, still is rare and very much something I enjoy in Metal in the right arrangement. The beginning of the record even on "The Mouth of the Nile" has some among some other moments (I want to say the closing track "Drown" as well "This Was Icarus Drowning"..which might be a reference/reprise per a Concept?).

But I will certainly be taking this in more this year, and maybe add more here or another entry in terms of details (or a Video).

I am enjoying this enough though to maybe regard this as 2015's Brice Plays Drums or RisingSide in that it's another local band doing progressive stuff that I am surprised how good and how much I am enjoying them. And for that matter, where they will go, as this is just their debut record.

I'd love to also see them live, perhaps with another band like The Royal Veil, Nomia, Maeth among other favorites. I wonder if the members and their fans know any of those bands.

For the Imperium - Hail the Monsters (2013)

Video for "Sudden Death"..not bad, although different in some ways, as it seems the vocals are more guttural overall.

1/8/13 5:03AM
I'm pretty excited to hear this record, as their Self-Titled debut record from 2011 finished pretty high on the AllMediaReviews Index as it's a record that impressed me a ton back then, and I still enjoy playing every so often.

For those unfamiliar, For the Imperium are a Finnish experimental/avant-garde progressive Metal band who have managed to mold their own style somehow while taking a bunch of influences such as Faith No More/Mike Patton, Avenged Sevenfold, Protest the Hero, Coheed and Cambria, System of a Down, and Between the Buried and Me among others.

But I think maybe what made that debut record the most impressive is of course, the quality of the songwriting. It almost always comes back to that, and that record has it, and hopefully this one will have it as well. And as that press release reads below, the 1st single "Sudden Death" is coming on January 18th, and then the whole thing comes on March 1st, just before/within the same week I now count 3 big records being released along with Cloud Cult and Brooke Waggoner. It seems like every year March has at least 1 week where a bunch of highly anticipated albums come out, and this year, at least the 1st week of March seems to be one of those weeks.

The cover art by the way, I can't avoid thinking, looks like the Baroness (and Kvertelak?) album covers. I wonder if this is the same artist, or someone whose a fan?

All hail the new age of metal – Hail The Monsters!

Prepare for the retaliation of For the Imperium!

The new website for the band got released today. The stupendous description of the album "Hail the Monsters" is included, written by Mape Ollila (the grand old man of Finnish metal scene)

The Helsinki-based FOR THE IMPERIUM has given its metal a brand new outfit!

"Hail the Monsters", an album manufactured during the whirls of last year, is ready to be released and will see daylight on the 1st of March.

The band and the forthcoming album have already aroused active interest among the peers in the music industry through borders. It goes without saying that this spring, FOR THE IMPERIUM will pull an assortment of aces from their sleeves.

The prelude to "Hail the Monsters" will be heard on the 18th of January when FOR THE IMPERIUM will release the first single "Sudden Death". The perceptive lyrics and the astonishing video - which will be featured on Inferno Metal Magazine's website (www.inferno.fi) - inspired the band to donate all the profits acquired from the single to charity undeducted.

Commented by the band's bass player Jyri 'Käärmetukka' Helko: "We chose a group called Food Not Bombs from Helsinki because we wanted to support small local activity that actually makes a difference. Millions of people in the world are starving while staggering amounts of money are spent on rearmament. The purpose for Food Not Bombs -activities are to pay attention to this fact by giving away free food."

"Sadly, not too many bands these days dare to voice their opinions about anything. The lyrics tell us about a world where people are no longer treated as individuals, but statistics. Those who refuse to stand by silently, will be silenced."

"Hail the Monsters" will be released in Finland and Great Britain 1st of March 2013 (Warner Music Finland / Graphite Records). The remaining dates will be announced later.

Weird, even having not heard the music that is included with this trailer, it's pretty clear they are going even more political with this one. System of a Down/Serj Tankian? it almost looks like if you took the movie π and emphasized things with Gas prices in relation to the stock market (as the movie π does).

Muse, a band who I've felt for years, should be able to make a perfect record, but have yet to. Although going even more political than their last 2 records? I worry if the lyrical content could start to overshadow the actual music.

But we'll get to find out come September (or earlier). Good to finally get this info at least, as they had been quiet for awhile now.

For the Imperium - For the Imperium (2011)

3 California Girl (Born n' Raised)
4 Hero
5 Until the End
6 Die Dead
7 Working Class Heroine
8 Pike River
9 Österbotten
10 Elisa
11 Seek for Help

Wow, this caught me by surprise. This new Finnish Metal band bends genres left and right, and still manages to write songs that are catchy, energetic, tongue-in-cheek and more or less work well.

They will remind people of artists like Protest the Hero and Avenged Sevenfold among some others (System of a Down, Faith No More, Mr.Bungle, Coheed and Cambria), but at least just hearing this album a few times now, the influences are more so just that, rather than exact emulating. Their singer does seem to sound close to Mike Patton on a few of these songs, but I guess his voice in general seems to be his own, or at least not exactly like Patton's, like some other sites have suggested.

It is so late in the year, but I don't care. This could be one of those huge grower records, even in a short time, that I'll look back and think of 2011 (and maybe more likely 2012) for.

BTBAM TO RELEASE “THE PARALLAX: HYPERSLEEP DIALOGUES” ON APRIL 12
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME TO RELEASE “THE PARALLAX: HYPERSLEEP DIALOGUES” ON APRIL 12

CRITICALLY REVERED NORTH CAROLINA BAND ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN HEADLINING TOUR

Globally celebrated progressive rock / cutting-edge metal innovators BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME (aka BTBAM) will release its new album The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues on April 12, 2011 via Metal Blade Records. The three-song strong, 30 minute tour de force was recorded at Canada's Metalworks Studios and Rattlebox Studios and produced / engineered by the Grammy award–winning David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, King Crimson, Dream Theater, etc.) with BTBAM.

The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues represents BTBAM’s musical and conceptual masterwork; the record showcases both the quintet’s vivid execution and ambitious vision. The otherworldly conceptual thread linking each of the songs is mobilized around two human characters that live in different planes of existence and are separated by millions of light years, each confronted with similar personal issues. Subsequently, both characters make decisions that will change their lives, and perhaps the course of the universe, forever. Musically, the release presents aura-rich atmospheres rife with roaring volumes, corrugated rhythms and trance-inducing intricacies. Cerebral and visceral, soft and heavy, melodic and abrasive, tender and brutal, familiar and strange and taut yet sprawling and epic, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME has crafted a sound that is musically sophisticated yet primal and a disc where every new passage leads to the culmination of an epic adventure.

some stuff was posted here hence the "2.0."

I have no clue what this video has/sounds like since I'm at work right now. But I'm sure some edits/bumps could happen soon and of course when the details of this thing are posted. But as the video says, it's being released on April 12th, 2011. An early 2nd quarter release.

Interesting title fwiw.

edit: here's a few write ups. Both announcing them signing to Metal Blade Records.

Metal Blade Bio
Between the Buried and Me's storied career began back in the year 2000. Since their inception, they've released six full length albums and one live album: Between the Buried and Me (2002, Lifeforce), The Silent Circus (2003, Victory), Alaska (2005, Victory), The Anatomy Of (2006, Victory), Colors (2007, Victory), Colors Live (2008, Victory), The Great Misdirect (2009, Victory). Between the Buried and Me (BTBAM) has thrived both with their albums and through their engaging and unparalleled live show. BTBAM challenges listeners with their ever-evolving musical style, juxtaposed compositions, ultra-long songs, and deep lyrical concepts, as opposed to giving in to the lowest common denominator to try and expand their fan base. This has resulted in a fanatically loyal following and albums that consistently make it onto the myriad of top 10 lists in any year BTBAM releases an album.

The next step in BTBAM's musical journey involves a new label home in Metal Blade Records and another trek into boundary and genre defying song-writing that is their new album, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues.

The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues serves as the first installment of a two-part story. Hypersleep introduces two human characters who live in different planes of existence, separated by millions of light years. We find that each of them is confronted with similar personal issues that they need to reckon with. Both characters make decisions that will change their lives, and perhaps the course of the universe, forever. The follow up album will pick up the story with our two main characters, with the help of near light speed travel, meeting each other and realizing together their purpose in the universe.

Musically, it sounds like Between the Buried and Me. Hypersleep has elements of aggression, beauty, quirkiness, and pure cacophony. Vocalist Tommy Rogers adds, "For Hypersleep, we establish several themes which I'm sure will be revisited in the next album, which is something we really look forward to. We love to expand on simple ideas and see where they take us."

Between the Buried and Me will support The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues with headlining North American tour dates in the Spring of 2011.
press release they posted on facebook

NEXT CHAPTER IN AWARD-WINNING BAND's STORIED CAREER SET TO UNFOLD

Celebrated progressive rock / cutting-edge metal band BETWEEN THE BURIED AN ME (also BTBAM) has inked a worldwide recording deal with Metal Blade Records. The award-winning North Carolina quintet will kick off the partnership with the April release of its new album The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues.

"We are delighted in the opportunity to join the Metal Blade family," commented BTBAM guitarist Paul Waggoner. "Their commitment to heavy music over the years is inspiring and we look forward to becoming a part of the ever-growing legacy of the label. Our new release, titled "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" will hit the streets in April. We are confident that our dedicated fans will appreciate it and hopeful that we will gain the attention of some new ears as well. In closing, I'd like to reference a quote from the illustrious Joe Dirt: "Life's a garden, dig it."

Further details on The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues will be made available soon. The LP will contain the first new music from BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME since the release of 2009's The Great Misdirect, which landed at #36 on the Billboard Top 200 in its first week of release. BTBAM supported the album with a full scale North American headlining tourand live dates across Europe, Australia and Japan as well as a U.S. tour as hand-picked support for like-minded rockers Mastodon.

Check out a teaser HERE.

About BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME:

Merging unparalleled musical bravery, prodigious musicianship, flawless execution and an angular landscape of forward thinking ideas, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME reinvent the rock 'n roll idiom while pleasing their harshest critics: themselves. Joining metal's dexterity and progressive rock's psychedelic, multi-layered experimentation, BTBAM (whose name was inspired by a line of lyrics from the Counting Crows song "Ghost Train") create spine-tingling sound that contains visceral power, labyrinthine arrangement, mind-boggling melody and majestic beauty. The band has released five full-length LPs since its formation in 2000 including Between the Buried and Me (2002), The Silent Circus (2003), Alaska (2005), The Anatomy Of (2006), Colors (2007) and 2009's critically acclaimed The Great Misdirect. The group has showcased its live prowess via a slew of world headlining tours and has participated in major touring festivals including Ozzfest and the Radio Rebellion and Progressive Nation tours. Since its inception, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME has sold nearly one half million records and proven itself as a progressive rock pacesetter whose modernist clang pegs it as a paradigm to be followed and a yardstick by which other bands are measured.

In addition to Waggoner, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME features Tommy Rogers (vocals / keyboards), Dustie Waring (guitar), Blake Richardson (drums / percussion) and Dan Briggs (bass).

"daring, eclectic, and dizzying…serpentine guitar heroics…brilliance" - THE ONION

"Inspired equaly by Yes, Dream Theater and Dillinger Escape Plan, the North Carolina extreme-prog band Between the Buried and Me think nothing of combining furious death metal rhythms and complex math metal licks with neoclassical leads and airy, atmospheric interludes." – GUITAR WORLD

"This North Carolina quintet has made a career out of stirring prog, emo, jazz, electronics, and what-have-you into the metal pot...diverse would be an understatement" - STYLUS

"Between the Buried and Me have evolved into a progressive band in the truest sense of the word, an alchemic group who concoct innovative, multi-genre fusions rather than a metal outfit with experimental pretensions." – ALTERNATIVE PRESS

"Nearly 10 years and six albums in, these guys are still at the forefront…the main reason: their sheer musical talent. If you ever wondered what Dream Theater's prog-metal might sound like if they had been raised on Dillinger Escape Plan and Metallica rather than Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly, Between the Buried and Me have the answer…a jaw-dropping and cathartic sound that few bands can even manage." - CLEVELAND SCENE

"It's a half hour of music...call it what you like! glad people are as stoked about this signing as we are."

another quote from the band about it.

Okay, well I just am going to go with a couple of things. It's 30 minutes of music. Sometimes that length, or shorter is regarded as a full-length. But as evidenced by that previous entry with many videos and a few interviews, they were working on AN EXTENDED PLAY RELEASE aka an "EP."

Typically a shorter length record. And for these guys, a 30 minute album frankly, is MUCH shorter than they typically make.

It's really just semantics I suppose, but I and this blog, until it's truthfully put into stone, am still going with this being an EP, and not a full-length. Maybe the ole "Mini-album" category makes the most sense as a compromise.

And the fact is, one of the more recent quotes mentioned the band also working on another release for later in the year. So unless they are doing a System of a Down's Mesmerize/Hypnotize, Devin Townsend or Omar Rodriguez-Lopez kind of multiple-albums-the-same-year kind of thing (although back in the 60's and early 70's, bands might release an album every 6 months, but most of those albums only were 25-40 minutes long), odds are the next one will be longer and actually be considered a full-length and closer to the length LP they have released in the past.

But another thing about this news, with Metal Blade. I don't hate them, and they've been the label for many bands I enjoy/have enjoyed over the years. But the folks cheering hooray for the fact BTBAM signed with them might want to be aware of what kind of label they are. I just consider what so many of the bands on their label ended up doing. Most recently with 3. Sure, they did resign 3, but I can't forget how little promotion 3's last album received from Metal Blade.

Maybe some of that had to do with the fact Metal Blade knew 3 had signed with Road Runner even before it came out, but I was not all that impressed by their promotion of Revisions. 3 had that great momentum off the 2 Porcupine Tree tours and Progressive Nation, you'd think they would have reaped more benefits from that, but I look at the lack of help from Metal Blade as part of why they didn't entirely. But I suppose how much and how well their next album does, again via Metal Blade, may get a more accurate idea of how good of a job Metal Blade is doing for them and other artists.

And for BTBAM, Victory Records was pretty terrible. So, comparably, Metal Blade won't have to do a lot to improve upon their work. At least they likely won't get lumped in with so many of those scenester/'core bands on that label anymore. I guess we'll see. And it should be interesting to hear this record along with the next part of it that Tommy mentions in that bio.

System of a Down Reunion in 2011

B-mouth link

SYSTEM OF A DOWN's much-rumored comeback/reunion tour is expected to be announced on Monday, November 29, along with details of several European festival appearances in 2011, including the U.K.'s Download.

When asked by a fan via Twitter if there is any truth to reports that SYSTEM OF A DOWN will play next year's Download festival, SYSTEM bassist Shavo Odadjian replied, "Stay tuned."

Download festival organizer Andy Copping revealed that Download 2011 early-bird tickets will go on sale on December 3. Writing on his Twitter, Copping said, "Christmas comes early! Download 2011 early bird tickets on sale 9 a.m. Friday 3rd December 2010. There will be more Download info [on November 29]. Please…any specific questions about bands being announced, ticket prices, RIP, length of time for early birds etc. will be answered November 29."

According to the official blog of Francis Zégut, host of the show "Pop Rock Station" on the French radio station RTL2, SYSTEM OF A DOWN will perform at the Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy in Paris, France on June 6, 2011. This is expected to be one of many gigs the reunited band will play in Europe during next summer's festival season.

When asked about the possibility of a full-blown SYSTEM reunion during an August 2010 interview with The Pulse of Radio, singer Serj Tankian replied, "Shavo got married like two months ago, we were all at his wedding, and you know, we all talk, we're friends, nothing's changed, and we get offers to play shows, tours, whatever, and we discuss them once in a while. We have not made any decisions as of yet as to what we're gonna do. But when we do, it'll be quite obvious."

(A short audio clip of Serj Tankian talking to The Pulse of Radio about SYSTEM OF A DOWN's status is available at this location [Real Media].)

Meanwhile, Odadjian himself said in a recent interview with Hustler magazine that SYSTEM went on an "indefinite break" to save the band from splitting up permanently.

Odadjian explained, "We won a Grammy and we had two number one records. We were making a lot of loot [money]. Then some people within the group of four brothers started seeing things differently . . . and their actions made the reactions of others pretty unbrotherly-like."

The bass player added, "All of a sudden band members are having problems financially. . . . [and] fighting about, 'I want my style of music to be this and that.' I love them. They're my brothers, but I couldn't see my brothers digging into each other's pockets and killing each other's artistic creativity."

Odadjian said that the band members vowed to come back "when we again have the hunger and the fire in our eyes that we did when we started SYSTEM OF A DOWN."

SYSTEM OF A DOWN has been on hiatus since 2006 while its members have pursued various personal projects. Tankian released his first solo album, "Elect The Dead", in 2007 and a follow-up effort, "Imperfect Harmonies", earlier this year, while bassist Shavo Odadjian recorded with members of the WU-TANG CLAN and launched a new online music initiative. Meanwhile, guitarist Daron Malakian started a new band called SCARS ON BROADWAY, also featuring SYSTEM drummer John Dolmayan.

well, a tour is nice, a new album probably better. But I guess it's the 1st step, as it seems Serj's solo work hasn't compared too well to the SOAD music. I think it's largely due to how political it is, at least for me. I'm curious, especially with the break and what's happened since 2004-2005 politically/globally if they were to write new music as a band, how it would compare to Serj's solo work. Hopefully better, but we'll see.

If they come to Minnesota, I'm probably going. Although I still feel The Mars Volta outclassed them at XCel the 1 time I saw SOAD. Although SOAD were still good, but the Volta were better that evening.

Here's the song "Borders Are"

My thoughts are kind of impartial. On 1 hand, I am a System of a Down fan, thus I am a fan of his. However, his last solo disc Elect the Dead had some good music on it, but maybe didn't include as much humor while being a bit too political for my liking.

I will say, I wish SOAD would get back together soon, but that may still be a few years away sadly.

That all being said, that song sounds promising enough, so I certainly will check it out when it's available.
