vinyl update.
I need to elaborate on some of these, in a new video soon hopefully.
22 - You Are Creating: Limb 1
Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
Peter Gabriel - Up
Eddie Money - Nothing to Lose
Linda Rondstadt - Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind
Painted in Exile - The Ordeal (Vinyl)
Painted in Exile - The Ordeal - (CD)
King's X - Dogman

The media market is huge, thus the need for a media review market.
This is our little contribution to that field.

Ideology - Ideology (2015-2016)
This is a long-awaited debut album from this local Minnesota Progressive Metal band whose drummer, Charlie Engen, I've known and seen do these amazing performances at recitals the last few years.
Musically, this is very much in the vein of what I've been hoping to get from Painted in Exile or even like Native Construct last year. Progressive extreme Metal, with well-thought-out, flowing compositions that showcase chops and melody.
Between the Buried and Me fans very likely will love this.
I'll try and add more in here and/or YouTube, etc among other spots soon. But I'm really happy for Charlie and these guys for finally getting this released.
And they should play a show with other local bands like Gracepoint perhaps? Brice Plays Drums or any other of the excellent progressive bands in my hometown.

Painted in Exile: Indiegogo
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/painted-in-exile-new-full-length-album-2016--3#/
The video more or less explains everything. I am still optimistic about what this band will do, even after everything that's happened with lineup changes (member's leaving, and returning in the case of their singer Rob Richards) and just how many years its been since I first got into them, 2009?
I can't help though think about Native Construct and how they got signed to Metal Blade records, and this band has been around longer I recall, but were not signed to them nor a label like Summerian or Relapse.
But maybe putting this album out how they will could be for the best.
I'll try and bump this as their progress on the campaign happens.

Painted in Exile - Return of Singer/Demo Clip/New Album in 2016
7/26/15 10:39PM
As that says, their new singer is actually their original singer now returned. and the debut album is coming in 2016.
Facebook
Everyone, please welcome our original vocalist Rob Richards back into Painted In Exile! We are finally in a place where we feel the six of us couldn't possibly make this band a reality without one another and our bond is stronger than ever. Everyone, show Rob a warm welcome and enjoy this demo clip of one of our new tracks. The new album is coming in 2016!
12/17/14 5:12AM
This is pretty sweet, so given how long it's been since anything came from these guys, in some ways, it was worth that wait. 2009's Revitalized EP to be specific.
They don't have a permanent singer I guess still, which has a lot to do with how long it has taken. They also lost their keyboardist and found a new one if I recall.
At any case. It's available at whatever price you want on their Bandcamp linked below.

Native Construct - Quiet World (2014-2015)
I'm unclear how good this album is/will be as it's not released yet anyway, dropping next Tuesday April 21st I noticed.
But the video below with "Mute" definitely holds some optimism. Props to a friend of mine named Jason on Facebook and Mike Portnoy's forum for recommending this song/band to me.
This is a 3-piece band as the info below shows, comprised of musicians who met at Berklee College of Music. Style-wise, it is progressive metal, that I suppose isn't exactly reinventing the wheel, but I do like the textures and symphonic elements. This doesn't sound like progressive metal trying to be Dream Theater really, but more just highly influenced by Between the Buried and Me and perhaps Mr.Bungle and some others (both are mentioned in the comments and some other places online).
I guess I hear this track "Mute" as sounding rather refined and the use of strings working quite well. In just checking out the 1 track on their Bandcamp Page from 2012 (embedded at the bottom), they clearly have an interest in using textures and strings? (even if they are just programmed). That along with composition could allow my feelings about this band stand out among so many "prog metal" bands who may be heavily influenced by BTBAM (or Dream Theater I suppose).
I guess if there's a band who I am most reminded of in that using that influence and doing cool thins with it, it'd probably be Painted in Exile, who, after that great EP in the late 2000's, have been rather quiet (1 new track recently), so perhaps Native Construct will bring that kind of thing in more quantity (at least they are signed to Metal Blade).
PiE and I suppose I am reminded a little of that newest The Contortionist album/style.
Perhaps Native Construct could do a tour with either Painted in Exile or more likely, The Contortionist?
I guess we'll see, but this album should be something cool to look forward to next week, post-Record Store Day even.

Native Construct is the product of collaboration between several students that began in 2011 at the storied Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Fueled by a desire to breathe new life into the modern metal genre, Native Construct artfully blends a wide spectrum of compositional influences, ranging from classical all the way to prog metal and musical theatre. The result is a wonderfully unique sonic texture, made up of extended-range guitars, theatrical vocals, and a full complement of symphonic instrumentation. Guitarist and composer Myles Yang's passion for innovation, coupled with his extensive academic study of arranging and compositional techniques, makes Native Construct a truly distinctive up-and-coming metal act.
In 2014, the band's music caught the ear of Brian Slagel at Metal Blade Records, and led to a recording contract and a worldwide release of the band's debut album, Quiet World. The album promises to be a rich, vibrant, and aurally engaging musical experience. While following a musically programmatic approach to its storytelling, the album demonstrates a fascinating unification of numerous musical styles and provides an emotional journey through the vast and imaginative world Native Construct have envisioned.
Quiet World was largely self-produced and written between 2011 and 2013 in between the individual band members' studies at the Berklee College of Music. What began as jam sessions simply for fun eventually turned into a full-fledged musical endeavor. All tracking and programming was done at the band's home studios in Boston, MA, with the exception of vocals, which were recorded with Jamie King at The Basement Studios in Winston-Salem, NC. The album was mixed by Rich Mouser at The Mouse House Studio in Los Angeles, CA, and mastered by Jamie King.
A brief listen to Quiet World is enough to make it apparent that there is a concept, here. Though it's best to let the band explain the album in their own words: "Quiet World is about a guy who loves a girl. The guy is a bit of an odd and eccentric person - an outcast. He's also a mute, and a little unstable, as it turns out. The girl doesn't return his feelings, but he can't bring himself to let go. As his unrequited passion for her devolves into obsession and eventual resentment, his mind begins to slip further and further away. He convinces himself that he can't be loved because of his condition and abnormalities. So he decides to create for himself a new, fantastic world of which he has complete control - a world where there are no oddballs or outcasts. A world where everyone is surrounded by people who are just like themselves: a much quieter world.
"It's at this point that the first track of the album, "Mute," begins. And it turns out that many of the subjects of his new world are not as content living this way as he is. In the second track we see a new character, the Archon, rise up and unite his people in the clouds with the once distant people in the sea. He leads an opposition to "Sinister Silence," as the people come to call him. The rest of the album unfolds with events within the "Quiet World" and manifestations of the enduring struggle between the Archon and Sinister Silence. The lone exception is track number four, "Your Familiar Face," which steps out of this world for a moment to give a closer look at the events prior to the first track and the tragedy of Sinister Silence."
What is impressive about Native Construct is not necessarily an involved concept on a debut record, it's that they wrote, produced, and recorded the album while balancing school work and on a college student budget. It's the epitome of "self produced." And what Native Construct wants fans to know is that "the composition process for this album was intensely meticulous from top to bottom. Each note, each lyric, each twist and each turn were arrived at with the utmost care. As such, we were able to weave rich, often subtle layers of meaning into the music and text. We're very excited for you all to experience the result of our efforts!"

Painted In Exile News
This update video kind of explains where they are at and why they have been so quiet the last couple of years with news.
1). Their vocalist left, which could be an enormous blow. But the jury is still out on what their music will sound like with a different singer, and even this upcoming single with "guest vocalists."
2) They have members that live in different parts of the East Coast it appears, which explains how stagnant or slow their progress has been to even just write new music.
3) This new single is coming, I thought they said this Spring, so at the very least, that is something to anticipate.
4) sound-wise, it seems they may have changed/change. Beyond even losing their singer. I guess as long as they avoid some of the recent Metal cliches of Djent and Deathcore, or even the standard Math or Post Metal elements, and include more than enough of the jazzy and technical stuff (prog), the other stuff including any Rap, I very likely could enjoy still.
That all being said, I am kind of less enthusiastic about them given the amount of time and now with the lineup changes. I suppose they could totally win me over again like they did when first hearing them in 2009 or 2010 with the Revitalized EP. But I was just thinking how their debut album should have come out by now, or really a couple of years ago. And the fact it didn't even get fully recorded (or even written?), just makes me skeptical that Painted In Exile's opportunity to make a big splash may have came and now be gone.
But, without anything to listen to still, the jury is still out. I just am not expecting amazing things from them after all that's happened. But I certainly want to pay attention when they do put out new music, including this new single.
But hopefully they do find a singer and bassist soon, and even find the means to limit if cut out the long distance collaborating if possible. Although it reminds me of some bands like Fates Warning or even Dream Theater to a small degree with James living in Canada (Subterranean Masquerade also comes to mind, Blackfield as well, although given their distance, that may contributed to where they ended up ultimately).

Media Addicts RIP
http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10151318406178584&id=70826293583
Hello world. Media Addicts plays its FINAL show tomorrow night (12/19) at the Artists' Quarter in St. Paul. It is a send-off to our dear friend Billy G.- guitarist for Media Addicts, as he will be moving to a bigger pond down the road (L.A.) in the coming months. Eric Miller, our original drummer, has also moved on to bigger and better things, whose part will be played by the great Jendeen Forberg. FYI, the first set will be an open jazz set with guests of Billy's choosing, then Media Addicts will hit immediately following. Again, this is your last chance to see this great band. Music starts @ 9pm
I can't be really all that surprised by this given I knew their drummer was leaving with his wife back to Montana anyway, after speaking with him at their CD Release show a few months ago. And one key member goes, it's never easy to replace them (why I am a little worried about The Book of Right On as well unfortunately..see Painted in Exile and some others whose progress has slowed since losing a band member).
And with Billy also going, I don't see how they are still a band, at least for now. Maybe a reunion will happen at some point. O well, damn.
I might add, here's another example of a far too talented and interesting group that NOBODY caught on to, save for some of the people in town who follow the Jazz scene. And I will fully confess I am guilty of not catching on to them early enough, as it really took til about 9 months ago where I fully got into them. I had their cd Elsewhere for a few years, and even saw it at KFAI, but I really wished I had seen them more often live and knew that album while they were still around.
I imagine there is these guys music, in whatever form, that may come in the future. Maybe David (sax) and Brent (bass) could form a new group? or maybe they could hook up with Mike Linden and JP from The Super Pilots who also are kind of not at a full-strength now here in Minnesota? IT'S WISHFUL THINKING I'll admit, but if the world somehow worked magic like I'd like, that maybe could happen.
Anyway, I shall attend their final show tomorrow night and maybe get a little more insight into what future they all may have music or otherwise. And of course I will continue to enjoy both Elsewhere and their latest Autonomy, which finished rather high on my 2012 Index.
I will add though, I should credit my girlfriend with situations like these, as she's not crazy about getting attached to BANDS/GROUPS but instead SOLO ARTISTS. That way, this stuff is unlikely to occur.

Painted In Exile - TBA (2011) (2.0)
Facebook announcement
bandcamp page
This is a teaser/trailer of sorts, that they announced they would be putting up on "Pi Day" (3/14/11).
And the title of this full-length debut record, I'm not clear on, but wonder based on that, if it could be a Self-Titled record.
I like what I hear, even 1 of the clips reminds me of the crazy technical band Brain Drill a bit. The rap section, the acoustic clip, the varied vocal styles, etc. There's still a lot of reason for optimism for this.
However, they need to be able to actually release it in some format of course (digitally via bandcamp? or maybe a label like Summerian would sign them?). That hasn't actually been announced at this point that I know/or have read.
Also the fact they are even allowing fans (or hoping they will?) pay $1.49 to download it from their bandcamp page raises an eyebrow.
Also the fact 2 of the members left the band recently raises another red flag.
But I am still rather optimistic about this album and their future, as they are one-of if not the most promising progressive extreme metal bands right now (along with What's Left of Her and a few others).

Painted In Exile - Revitalized (Official Video)
The build up was sort of a big deal for this video, and for what it is, it's not bad. Nothing amazingly surreal or breathtaking visually, but good enough from an editing and video story-telling standpoint along with just seeing the band in action I guess.
It's cool to see a 9+ minute video for once. I'm not sure how many bands have ever made a video that long. Most cases if it's for a longer song, of course the song is edited down for the video.
The girls meet up, and shoot up with heroin or some other drug, the 1 appears to die..or does she?
Now that this thing has been released, etc the next thing we hear from Painted In Exile will be about the plans for 2011 and their debut record. But for now, it's nice to finally check this thing out, that they seemed to work pretty hard on this Fall.

Painted in Exile - TBA (2011 projected) (1.0)
Just a bit of an update from them
Painted In Exile is currently working very hard on writing our upcoming full length CD so please excuse us if we seem a little hush. We are making sure this is going to surpass anything we've ever written and cover every ground that we didn't get to on Revitalized. We're a much more mature band now so the new music wi...ll also rub off that way. The Revitalized music video will be released this fall! - Painted In Exile
for some reason I scanned that over just a bit ago and thought it meant the ALBUM was coming this fall. No, as I thought THE 1ST TIME I read it, A MUSIC VIDEO is coming this fall. This album? if they manage to find a way to release it, my guess would be sometime next Spring. April/May-ish, maybe a bit earlier.
When ever it does manage to come out, certainly I have big hopes for it. The music industry and the Metal scene needs more bands like these guys. Although, I gotta keep my guard up a bit given I've seen many bands with promising eps, put out a full-length that doesn't fulfill that promise overall. But I guess I can't help not consider that happening to these guys. Their last EP is so good, it almost reminds me more of Everything Everything or Pure Reason Revolution a few years ago. They do too many things well to fall into that trap, at least for a debut record.

Painted in Exile - "Distanced by Dissonance" (live)
different/extended arrangement of this song, that I guess they've now added some to. This band continues to impress me a ton. Debut lp should be in 2011, if not sometime late in 2010.
