The Sea Within - The Sea Within (2017-2018)

So this is 1 of the latest so-called "Super Groups" that is among progressive rock musicians.

The Self-Titled album drops on June 22nd. And per the write-up below, they are going to tour, but not with Daniel Gildenlow unfortunately. Casey McPherson of Flying Colors+Alpha Rev is going to fill-in.

I am quite curious about this, although per it sounds like it was driven largely by Roine, I wonder how much this will resemble The Flower Kings.

Gildenlow and Brislin's songwriting, assuming they did a good amount of it, may help my feeling about it. But it's a wait-and-see I guess.

Also adding some of the guests like Jon Anderson and Steve Hackett might help, although they may be just token-cameos.

"Art Rock" might suggest it's less about chops, and more about mood and atmosphere. But who knows.

Roine Stolt - Guitar, Vocals? (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, The Tangent, Anderson/Stolt)
Jonas Reingold - Bass (The Flower Kings)
Daniel Gildenlow - Guitar, Vocals (Pain of Salvation, Transatlantic)
Tom Brislin - keys (Spiraling, Solo, Yes, Renaissance,  Meatloaf)
Marco Minneman - Drums, Vocals (The Artistocrats, Steven Wilson, Necrophagist)

The Sea Within – the new art-rock collective comprising of Roine Stolt (Transatlantic, The Flower Kings), Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Jonas Reingold (Steve Hackett, The Flower Kings, Karmakanic, The Tangent), Tom Brislin Music (Yes Symphonic, Renaissance, Spiraling, Deborah Harry) & Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson, UK, Joe Satriani) – have announced that their debut self-titled album will be released 22nd June 2018.
Let's get one thing straight from the start. The Sea Within is more of an amalgamation of some serious talents, than a regular “supergroup”. These musicians have come together to create a unique album. Guitarist/vocalist Roine Stolt, bassist Jonas Reingold, keyboard player/vocalist Tom Brislin, drummer/vocalist Marco Minnemann and vocalist/guitarist Daniel Gildenlöw have a vast reservoir of experience. Look at the portmanteau of artists with who they've worked: The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Jon Anderson, Steven Wilson,The Aristocrats, Joe Satriani, Yes, Steve Hackett, Renaissance, Pain Of Salvation, Deborah Harry, Meatloaf, Karmakanic … that of itself tells you this is something very special.
“I suppose it all began to take shape in the autumn of 2016,” explains Stolt. “I had a chat with Thomas Waber, the boss at InsideOut Music, about the idea of putting together a new band. I wanted to move in a fresh direction with new collaborations. So Thomas gave me the ‘go ahead’ to seek musicians for a new project.”First on-board was The Flower Kings bass player Jonas Reingold.- “He is a long time bandmate and friend and we were also very keen to get keyboardist Tom (Brislin) involved - after seeing his synth pyrotechnics with legends Yes ‘Symphonic’ and with Camel. Then we have been a fans of ‘Aristocrats’ drummer Marco for a long time; I first heard of him 15 years ago and he is a brilliant drummer, unique energy. Then when we discussed ideas for singers, Daniel's name came up, he has such a great range and dynamic voice and we've worked together on and off over the years.” Also added later to the bands line-up for live shows was vocalist & guitarist Casey McPherson of ‘Flying Colors’ & ‘Alpha Rev’, who also sings a couple of songs on the album.
The entire recording situation took about six months, and the band also have some very special guests featured on the album.“We have got Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater playing piano on one song. The legendary Jon Anderson sings on another track, while 'wind ace' Rob Townsend, who plays saxophone and flute with Steve Hackett, is also on the record. Each of them brings a different flavour to the music.”

The Sea Within as a music collective have plans to perform live, and will make their stage debut at 'Night Of The Prog' in Loreley, Germany which happens from July 13-15 and will bring special guests for that evening. “As far as I am concerned, we will try do as much touring as possible. We have a great band, great label and our agent Rob Palmen on-board. We have great artwork by Marcela Bolivar, all looks bright. However Daniel will not be able to join us for touring now, as he has commitments with main band Pain Of Salvation. With Casey taking the vocal spot, now with us live, we can go out on the road and play this album and beyond and grow as a band. We have so much to offer musically, on record and on stage and I am sure we will develop a lot over the next few years. But 'The Sea Within' album is a great start. I am excited for everyone to hear what we have done and am now thrilled to start working on the songs for the live show.”
The album will be available as a special edition 2CD digipak, gatefold 2LP vinyl + 2CD & as digital download. You can find the full track listing below:

Gleb Kolyadin - Gleb Kolyadin (2017-2018)

This is the Self-Titled debut album from Gleb Kolyadin of iamthemorning. It features Steve Hogarth of Marillion, Gavin Harrison, and Jordan Rudess among other guests.

I'll say, a lot of albums "feature" guests and are often side or solo projects from bands I often find are better than the side or solo projects. But with some of the names and trailer, I am pretty curious about this. It's kind of a win-win in that if it's great, like better than I'd expect, it'll be something I will be into this current year. And if it's not, I am still looking forward to the next iamthemorning album, etc.

Release date is February 23rd, the preorder links are found in the description from KScope below.

The debut self titled solo album from the virtuoso Iamthemorning pianist, feat. Steve Hogarth (Marillion), Gavin Harrison (King Crimson), Nick Beggs (Steven Wilson), Mick Moss (Antimatter) and Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater). Pre-order your copy for 23rd Feb - http://found.ee/GLEB_KOLYADIN_ALBUM "The Best of Days" features the instantly recognisable vocals from Marillion’s Steve Hogarth, on the collaboration Steve comments "Gleb is a beautiful pianist and a great musician. I was invited to collaborate on his new solo album and my mind was made up as soon as I heard the music." Gleb Kolyadin is an emotive exploration of self-identity; a story of two parts with interweaving leitmotifs. The album's central concept weaves through an elaborate tonal and thematic structure, built around the extraordinary rhythm section of Gavin Harrison and Nick Beggs, which is accented at its focal points by guest appearances from Steve Hogarth, Jordan Rudess, Mick Moss and Theo Travis. “Gleb is an extremely rare talent as a pianist and as a composer. His compositions are very inspiring as he breaks new ground on the instrument." Gavin Harrison (King Crimson / Porcupine Tree) The album is a collaborative piece with each musician recording their own parts separately, starting with Gleb recording himself on grand piano in Moscow Winter-Spring 2017 at the famed Mosfilm studio. The album was mixed and engineered by Vlad Avy, who also previously worked on the two Iamthemorning records. Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress @ PPUSA 2017

Go to 8:40.

Happy for MP and PPUSA. Although I thought it was planned that the whole 12-Step Suite will be played at Cruise to the Edge for Portnoy's 50th Birthday Bash, etc.

I guess the roster of musicians and what kind of set list they'll play beyond the 12-Step Suite I'd be curious about.

But not much chance I'll be going, even despite my wedding long gone, etc. It's more of a $ thing and there's a number of other trips with the soon to be wife, that I'd foresee being more in my cards.

But for those who do go, this should be cool to witness, just as Cruise to the Edge, and the stuff this weekend. At least some friends have streamed some of the stuff on FB, so I kind of feel like I'm there in a way.

Also kind of ironic all those years talking about ProgPower USA on Mike'a forum, and now he's finally going to be playing there. He I guess is attending the festival, mainly for Fates Warning with John Arch going on as I type this out.

I do wonder if any of the Dream Theater guys will consider showing up. Jordan I wonder about as I thought I recall Portnoy mentioning being in some good relations/communication with Jordan.

Jon Anderson band: Jordan Rudess, Jean-Luc Ponty + others

I'm just passing this along, but don't have a ton to write about it at this point. With Jordan and Ponty and that rhythm section, the odds of this sounding jazz-fusiony seem high. An odd mix, with a drummer who played with Michael Jackson even.

I hope this will end up being not so much one of those super groups on paper people salivate over, but doesn't really translate to WRITING GOOD SONGS, JAMS,ETC. But I guess with that in mind, it'll certainly be worth looking forward to. This article says it's being recorded in May, so it may even get released by the end of 2014. We'll see.

This group LIVE might be more intriguing certainly.

http://somethingelsereviews.com/2014/03/23/very-very-funky-slightly-sort-of-cosmic-guys-ex-yes-man-jon-anderson-puts-finishing-touches-on-new-band/

Jon Anderson, who has principally toured as a solo act since leaving Yes in 2004, is building a new band around the former Mahavishnu Orchestra violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. Now, he’s ready to talk about the rest of the lineup.
“We got in touch with [Dream Theater stalwart] Jordan Rudess, who is really a ridiculous piano and keyboard player and a really great rhythm-section players,” Anderson tells Aspen Public Radio. “You’ve got Rayford [Griffin] on drums, and Baron [Browne] on bass. These are very, very funky, slightly sort of cosmic guys. Everybody seems to be on the same sort of planet, which is kind of nice.”
Griffin has worked as a sideman over the years with Ponty, Stanley Clarke and Michael Jackson, among others. Browne has also collaborated with Ponty before, as well as Billy Cobham, Steve Smith’s Vital Information and Brian McKnight.
Anderson says he met Ponty when “he played on a track that I did with a friend of mine, Michael Lewis — who introduced my to Jean-Luc.” Anderson adds that they hope to begin recording in May and June. “We’ll just see what comes,” he says. “We’ve already written some music together via the internet, which is a great modern studio. We’re sort of on the way.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that he’ll be mounting the kind of globe-trotting tours that his former band became known for over the years. “It’s not something that I miss at all,” Anderson says. “I’m just starting up with a new band this summer, and we’re going to do some recording for next year. If it happens, I will be very happy. But it’s not the reason why you make music.”

David Bowie - The Next Day (2013)

2/26/13 9:22AM

This is the new/2nd video (and single?) from this record "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)"

rather provocative and gender-bending with  Bowie and Tilda Swinton featured . I guess Tilda has been likened often to how Bowie looked especially in the 70's. (not sure if this is NSFW, as I had to stop it out of concern).

The song itself I heard on 89.3 this morning and I'm liking it a fair amount more than "Where Are We Now?"
which may raise the optimism for this record a little more being as good a song as this new song/single is.

1/8/13 5:59AM
http://www.davidbowie.com/news

This album drops on March 11th. The 1st video/single is below. Not a bad tune, namely how it picks up towards the end. More to add later, but I guess Tony Levin played on this album which is noteworthy.

I guess I'll add just briefly my 2 cents about this/Bowie. I never was hugely into him, until about 10 years ago when a co-worker at my old job burned me a bunch of his records. And at that point, I realized how diverse he was, including a period of his music could be described as prog. I'm referring to mainly the Ziggy Stardust period, and from an album like Hunky Dory, the string arrangements drew me to some of his songs, namely "Life On Mars?" Rick Wakeman even played with Bowie, although not on Ziggy Stardust (as many think of). It was the fact he had the 2 offers at once, 1 to join Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders band, and the other was Yes. Whether he chose the right band, who knows. It can be argued either way, but the fact is, he did play with Bowie and his impact is noticed on a lot of those early Bowie records.

And I enjoyed parts of more or less every record this coworker burned for me, but I can't say any one specifically ever stood out over others, although I'll admit to not spending great amounts of time with them. I do recall of his 2 most recent records, I enjoyed Heathen much more than Reality. I remember Heathen being more consistent, more energetic, and layered (and heavy even?). Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, even made an appearance on it.

So, I am not expecting a ton with this album, but, if resembles Heathen more than Reality, that would be my preference at this point. And having Tony Levin on it can't hurt.

I'm not sure if the way the image below is, with the title like that, is the actual cover, or the image on his website without his name and the title is. But I'll go with the 1 below for now.

Dream Theater at the 2012 Grammys

Awkward interview, and of course it didn't air even on the E! Network's Red Carpet coverage. That was rather funny when the woman interviewing them asked who they were looking forward to seeing tonight, lol. I'm sure she had never even heard of Dream Theater until 5 minutes before that interview. And her reaction to a...whoa..a 9-minute song? NO WAY! lol thanks

Dave Grohl: I guess I don't have anything against him as a person, but I still think the Foo Fighters are very overrated.

Brief story with Dave Grohl saying "I FEEL BAD FOR DREAM THEATER"

Will Dream Theater ever get nominated again? I'm gonna guess no, but perhaps their odds are better now than in any years in the past. I do feel slightly bad for Portnoy, even though he's probably been over it a zillion times in his head, and now that it's over, he's probably a bit relieved.

I also can't help but think of Kevin Gilbert and the other Tuesday Music Club Members who appeared at the Grammy's in 1995 when their music won on Sheryl Crow's debut record Tuesday Night Music Club. I wonder if the camera showed Kevin and others when Crow went up to accept the award. They had to get mentioned of course. I might pay money if someone had a video copy of that Grammy Awards just to see it. I've always wanted to. But were Dream Theater shown in the crowd anywhere? I didn't see them, but go figure.

Jordan Rudess and James LaBrie "Space Dye Vest" (live)

A lot of fans, especially of the Kevin Moore albums with DT, and Kevin in general (and Awake) have been wanting to hear this song played live for ages.

However, my reaction to this where are the Samples? Floating Synths during the climax? sure it's Jordan's interpretation, but I can't help but be pining to hear Gabriela Kulka's interpretation instead, which I just put on and again for the 1st time in many years and remember why I loved her version of this song maybe as much as the original.

GK sdv by AllMR2

I'm curious if Dream Theater will pull it out live as a band, and if Jordan will continue to play it that way. Namely without samples and synths, and adding a little bit of his own jazzy phrasing. Honestly, I almost saw him as Rick Wakeman playing it like that. And while that's his thing, the song itself doesn't seem to call for that. Whereas in Gabriela Kulka's version there, she totally captured the passion, emotion and feel about what the song is about, at least to me. Those sad harmonies, the subtle feel and pace of the piano parts, and the overall dreaminess is on hers. On this new live version with James, I'm not really sensing it.
