Pain of Salvation - Top 10-40 Songs (Better than IN THE PASSING LIGHT OF DAY)

I am going to post this, and likely won't do a ton of editing later, but this is a list of Favorite Songs from Pain of Salvation, in a vaguely ranked order (the top 5-10 are more solid, 11-40  could probably be interchanged, plus I'm likely forgetting some songs I do love, but have not listened to in over a decade).

But this was inspired largely from some discussion on the dreamtheaterforums and also more or less since In the Passing Light of Day was released in 2017 and the reverence and praise for the 15-minute closing track that I fail to hear the genius behind, especially just comparing it to so many other songs they (Daniel Gildenlow) has written and recorded.

The below list is both a Favorite Tracks list and I don't think it's a stretch to say every single one of these songs are better, or in some cases  A LOT BETTER AND MORE MEMORABLE OR GOOSE-BUMP WORTHY (or at least include moments that are), than the title track to In the Passing Light of Day).

Is In the Passing Light of Day a bad song? no. It has a decent chorus. The lyrics I can follow the sympathy and and relate-ability to. But for me, and many others, how much I love a song can come down to is how much I enjoy it MUSICALLY.

ItPLoD DRAGS to me and fails to have any HUGE MAGICAL MOMENT that so many of the tunes below have. Even just the chorus, while not bad, is done at such a slow tempo, it doesn't include as strong of an ear worm as many of the below tracks have.

I would say, unless hearing it more and changing my take, the title track may be the most overrated song Pain of Salvation's fans have ever put onto a high pedestal.

King of Loss for example, back in the day was, and I'll admit I initially only thought it was okay, but I had kind of a Led Zeppelin-Bring it on Home moment with it a year or 2 after buying The Perfect Element I, and realize how incredible it was. The Strings and climax just blew me away.

Plus I kind of feel the lyrics get too dreary and bleak, the music doesn't include enough of a contrast with beauty (melancholy) that allows me to enjoy them. Sure, it's about the hard/harsh reality Daniel was going through with the I'm sure what seemed like never ending mincing-pain from the effects of Flesh Eating Bacteria eating away at his body. But from an ART standpoint, the music and words didn't bring me the "oh my god " moments that many other songs and sections of songs do.

It's just dreary, bleak, etc. Kind of like going to a Hospital and seeing a loved one suffer. There's no enjoyment or even comic relief often. It's only something you want to do and get over with.

It reminds me of Doom or Drone Metal. There's not enough sound in it to grab onto. The best part is when it's over, etc.

The Sea Within - The Sea Within (2017-2018)

So this is 1 of the latest so-called "Super Groups" that is among progressive rock musicians.

The Self-Titled album drops on June 22nd. And per the write-up below, they are going to tour, but not with Daniel Gildenlow unfortunately. Casey McPherson of Flying Colors+Alpha Rev is going to fill-in.

I am quite curious about this, although per it sounds like it was driven largely by Roine, I wonder how much this will resemble The Flower Kings.

Gildenlow and Brislin's songwriting, assuming they did a good amount of it, may help my feeling about it. But it's a wait-and-see I guess.

Also adding some of the guests like Jon Anderson and Steve Hackett might help, although they may be just token-cameos.

"Art Rock" might suggest it's less about chops, and more about mood and atmosphere. But who knows.

Roine Stolt - Guitar, Vocals? (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, The Tangent, Anderson/Stolt)
Jonas Reingold - Bass (The Flower Kings)
Daniel Gildenlow - Guitar, Vocals (Pain of Salvation, Transatlantic)
Tom Brislin - keys (Spiraling, Solo, Yes, Renaissance,  Meatloaf)
Marco Minneman - Drums, Vocals (The Artistocrats, Steven Wilson, Necrophagist)

The Sea Within – the new art-rock collective comprising of Roine Stolt (Transatlantic, The Flower Kings), Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Jonas Reingold (Steve Hackett, The Flower Kings, Karmakanic, The Tangent), Tom Brislin Music (Yes Symphonic, Renaissance, Spiraling, Deborah Harry) & Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson, UK, Joe Satriani) – have announced that their debut self-titled album will be released 22nd June 2018.
Let's get one thing straight from the start. The Sea Within is more of an amalgamation of some serious talents, than a regular “supergroup”. These musicians have come together to create a unique album. Guitarist/vocalist Roine Stolt, bassist Jonas Reingold, keyboard player/vocalist Tom Brislin, drummer/vocalist Marco Minnemann and vocalist/guitarist Daniel Gildenlöw have a vast reservoir of experience. Look at the portmanteau of artists with who they've worked: The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Jon Anderson, Steven Wilson,The Aristocrats, Joe Satriani, Yes, Steve Hackett, Renaissance, Pain Of Salvation, Deborah Harry, Meatloaf, Karmakanic … that of itself tells you this is something very special.
“I suppose it all began to take shape in the autumn of 2016,” explains Stolt. “I had a chat with Thomas Waber, the boss at InsideOut Music, about the idea of putting together a new band. I wanted to move in a fresh direction with new collaborations. So Thomas gave me the ‘go ahead’ to seek musicians for a new project.”First on-board was The Flower Kings bass player Jonas Reingold.- “He is a long time bandmate and friend and we were also very keen to get keyboardist Tom (Brislin) involved - after seeing his synth pyrotechnics with legends Yes ‘Symphonic’ and with Camel. Then we have been a fans of ‘Aristocrats’ drummer Marco for a long time; I first heard of him 15 years ago and he is a brilliant drummer, unique energy. Then when we discussed ideas for singers, Daniel's name came up, he has such a great range and dynamic voice and we've worked together on and off over the years.” Also added later to the bands line-up for live shows was vocalist & guitarist Casey McPherson of ‘Flying Colors’ & ‘Alpha Rev’, who also sings a couple of songs on the album.
The entire recording situation took about six months, and the band also have some very special guests featured on the album.“We have got Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater playing piano on one song. The legendary Jon Anderson sings on another track, while 'wind ace' Rob Townsend, who plays saxophone and flute with Steve Hackett, is also on the record. Each of them brings a different flavour to the music.”

The Sea Within as a music collective have plans to perform live, and will make their stage debut at 'Night Of The Prog' in Loreley, Germany which happens from July 13-15 and will bring special guests for that evening. “As far as I am concerned, we will try do as much touring as possible. We have a great band, great label and our agent Rob Palmen on-board. We have great artwork by Marcela Bolivar, all looks bright. However Daniel will not be able to join us for touring now, as he has commitments with main band Pain Of Salvation. With Casey taking the vocal spot, now with us live, we can go out on the road and play this album and beyond and grow as a band. We have so much to offer musically, on record and on stage and I am sure we will develop a lot over the next few years. But 'The Sea Within' album is a great start. I am excited for everyone to hear what we have done and am now thrilled to start working on the songs for the live show.”
The album will be available as a special edition 2CD digipak, gatefold 2LP vinyl + 2CD & as digital download. You can find the full track listing below:

The Sea Within: New Project ft Gildenlow, Minnemnann, Stolt

http://www.insideoutmusic.com/newsdetailed.aspx?IdNews=22127&IdCompany=8

Project release date of the yet untitled debut album from The Sea Within is Spring 2018 as the writeup there/shared below.

New project or "Super Group" of sorts that includes Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation, Roine Stolt and Jonas Reingold from The Flower Kings, Marco Minneman (Steven Wilson, The Aristocrats among many others), Tom Brislin (Yes, Renaissance, Spiraling)..

I will certainly check this album out, but with a little bit of caution per Daniel Gildenlow worked with The Flower Kings in the past and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't something I have returned to much, even among TFK's work.

I really hope this album doesn't sound much like The Flower Kings, but if it does, well, I won't be surprised. Why I am not highly anticipating it at this point. Maybe once a clip or 2 or single/video comes, my mind may change. I do hope Daniel does a lot of the lead vocals, which could make a different potentially for me.

The Sea Within – a new art-rock group formed by Roine Stolt (Transatlantic, The Flower Kings), Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Jonas Reingold (The Flower Kings, Karmakanic, The Tangent), Tom Brislin (Renaissance, Spiraling, Yes Symphonic, Deborah Harry) & Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson, UK, Joe Satriani) – have announced they will release their as-yet-untitled debut album in Spring 2018.

Roine Stolt comments on how the project came together: “I think all it started as a suggestion from the record company - putting together a new band, starting fresh, seeing if collective writing could spawn a unique style. Call it a supergroup if you want - I think we can handle that.”

The members recently entered Livingston Studios in London to begin recording the basic tracks, and found an instant chemistry in the way they worked together. “Going into the studio in London was taking a great risk as we had not been in the same room together beforehand.” Roine continues: “We had just sent demos around and didn’t really know if we could make great music together, but we managed to track almost 2 hours of new music, a mix of collective ideas. We also had a lot of great ‘off-time’, sharing laughs and stories in local pubs – that part is important.”

Currently the members are putting the finishing touches on their debut album, and of the music’s direction Roine says: “There are elements of prog, pop, art-rock and many cinematic elements. I suppose the music comes from within our collective memories of all that we love as far as sounds, visions and poetry. We hope that discovering the music will be a journey for the open-minded fan - something as fresh and uncertain and unfolding as it is for us.”

The Sea Within has also announced their first confirmed live date, taking to the stage at Night of the Prog Festival 2018 at Loreley, Germany on the weekend of 13-15th July 2018 alongside Camel, Big Big Train, Riverside & more. Tickets are available now here:
http://www.nightoftheprogfestival.com/en/home-2/

Drawing on their collective experience from across the rock and prog spectrum, The Sea Within sees them coming together to craft new music that sees them all leaving their respective comfort zones and challenging themselves.

Pain of Salvation News: Staffing Changes

So a lot of this stuff has gone down over the last 24+ hours (been kind of preoccupied with a showing of my apartment = many hours of cleaning required)

-Ragnar Zolberg unfortunately is not with Pain of Salvation anymore.

-Johan Hallgren is now back with Pain of Salvation.

The below accounts and comments on Facebook I always take with a grain of salt (no pun intended).

I want to believe this is for the best for both parties. The part about the money and songwriting credits, I guess on the surface is hard to see Daniel in the best light. But I want to believe Daniel and Ragnar just agreed to disagree unfortunately.

Ragnar showed on their new album In the Passing Light of Day, he is a talented singer/musician and songwriter, and with that, it hurts losing him. He in a lot of ways infused new life and interest in Pain of Salvation.

On the other hand, now learning of Johan Hallgren returning, I can't help but be happy to see. Longtime member and part of their "classic" lineup per say; I guess losing Ragnar, Johan Hallgren is as good a replacement out there.

But it does seem like a Soap Opera. Revolving door per say, almost like Yes in a way.

In the mean time, it will be interesting to see what Ragnar does going forward and of course what the next Pain of Salvation album may be like.

I quit Pain of Salvation in 2013 after having been in the band for 1 year only. It was nothing like what I had expected and I had come to understand why some members before me had also left. At that time Roger stepped in and did the acoustic tour in which he did a very good job!
About one year later I was asked to do one more gig, prognation at sea, I agreed. When I showed up for rehearsals Daniel had been hospitalised and asked me to fill in his shoes for the show, after he got better he asked me to join the band again and write the next album with him. I love to make albums so I decided to stick around a little longer.
Recently, with our album In the Passing Light of Day the band has been doing considerably better. An album which Daniel and I wrote together during a 2 year time period and I also lent some of my previous compositions to it. With a lot of dedication, sacrifices and help from various people we managed to go from almost being dropped from the record label to selling a descent amount of albums and playing to sold out shows. Something that I am very proud of and obviously very grateful for the love shown to us by the kind people attending our shows.
I have had a great time with my friends Gustaf Hielm, Daniel Karlsson and Léo Margarit. I am going to miss hanging out with them as much, they are the biggest reason I managed to stay all this time. <3 font="" nbsp="">
As it turned out, everybody worked on the album as a team, but as soon as our album was finished last year, the band leader started acting in a very similar manner as what we have been seeing of the band Ghost recently. It was clear that this was not “our" album anymore, but his. I got payed a small amount of 1000 euros for my work for those 2 years, that did not even cover my travel expenses.
Although PoS have now been doing quite good business wise, being in this band has been bad business from the beginning and has cost way more than what I’ve had in return, both mentally and economically. Minimum wage is not to be expected when you play to sold out shows and full venues at our standards. Neither is pessimism and criticism after almost every gig.
I have spoken my mind about all of this while still doing what I could to keep a professional relation towards everything, after all it is also my music that we have been playing and I have wanted everything to go as smoothly as possible despite the unjust treatment I have faced.
Instead of making amends, offering better salary or even giving credit where it’s due I was instead asked by Daniel to leave the band yesterday.
I am happy for everything I have learned in the recent years and the people I have gotten to know through this adventure and I am also very happy to be moving on. One thing that I have learned and think should be kept in mind is: Never take credit for others peoples work, that’s just not nice and extremely disrespectful.

A Message from Daniel Gildenlow
FB
After a few years of working together with Ragnar, I feel that we have come to a point where it is necessary to part ways. It feels very sad, because we are losing a great vocalist and stage personality in Ragnar. It felt great writing the new album together with him, and I am very thankful for that time. We all are. But with time it has become clear that his true place is not in this band. Musically, it has worked very well, but there are so many other variables that need to click in order to make a band strong and stable.
We are not going into a period of uncertainty, but one of deliberate change and strength. We have a great record label and a great management/booking company that have both told us that they understand our decision, and that they back us up and support us fully through this. All scheduled shows will happen as planned. How? Well, we are happy to announce that, starting today, Johan Hallgren will be returning to the band as a full member again, and we will go full throttle ahead through this. We are very happy about seeing him back onboard, and we are sure you will accept him back with open arms, as will we.
One thing that we are looking forward to a lot is the regained possibility to meet up and rehearse more often, which is one of the main reasons why I started playing music in the first place: to have that small and devoted tribe, standing in a sweaty rehearing room, sharing a stupid dream. And then making it come true.
So, a new chapter in the life of Pain of Salvation, and yet not. We hurt, we heal, we rise. And we keep delivering, that is a promise. We hope for your love and support through this. We want to thank Ragnar for the good years together with us, and wish him all the luck with his future endeavours. And again, we warmly welcome Johan Hallgren back to our family!
Peace,
Daniel and Pain of Salvation
What the band members and Johan himself has to say about his return to the band:
Johan Hallgren:
“Already when I quit the band, I felt that I really wanted to come back. This feels fun as hell, and I will go into this with full force – hook, line and sinker. I have promised myself to supersede everyone’s expectations of my return. This is something I know well, and I am damn good at it. And more than that, I have really missed them all – it’s a wonderful gang!”
Daniel D2 Karlsson:
“I am very happy to see Johan back – I actually feel quite exalted. Johan is a wonderful human being with a warm heart, and he’s got a fantastic charisma as a musician. I am convinced our fans will welcome him with a warm embrace.”
Léo Margarit:

“It’s great that Johan is back – a good friend. I am certain the fans will be very happy, he was a beloved band member, and many were sad to see him go. It will be very fun to play with him again!”

A message from Johan Hallgren
The guys in the band said some really kind things about me so I thought I would return the favor!
D2! First time I met him he was just a little kid about 11 years old and look at him now! He is handsome and a humble super musician who can switch between bass and keys in an instant! He is also a midi-wizard, sound engineer, light tech and so much more! Love to spend some time with him!
Leo! What can I say! Love the guy and everything about him! I don't think I need to mention his musical qualities! Seems like he was born through a drumroll singing!
Gustaf! Have had some sporadic contact with him over the last 25 years! Humorous guy and a killer musician! He is also a beast on bass but you already knew that!
Daniel! Sometimes he is a mystery to me! How can such an intellectual person go through hell sometimes squeezing out the last drop of blood in every musical and artistic insight! If he would be into economics he probably be a billionaire! Instead he beats himself almost to death to bring Pos forward giving everything he's got! But mostly he is just that loving, funny, person who is a close friend that always inspires me to be better on and off stage!
I've seen some pretty harsh posts out there about him during this member transition! Cut him some slack he is a human being! If the intentions was to hurt him, you did! Now we have two persons hurt! Let them heal and have two awesome bands out there! Johan

Mike Portnoy's SF - This Dying Soul (w/Daniel Gildenlow)

There;s been a lot about Cruise to the Edge 2017 the last few days, and Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress band revelead, playing the 12-step 5-song suite, etc.

This is the 1 that had me the most curious given it was Daniel Gildenlow singing.

Ted Leonard of Spock's Beard and Enchant also sang "The Root of All Evil"

the band is members of Haken and Eric Gillette which I guess I'm happy for the Haken fans and for Mike obviously to finally play this. Not being into Haken (and honestly, just not following their massive appeal), I guess I can't find myself obsessed over the fact they are in this band of his,

That being said and this performance, etc there will be a bunch of other events for this band to play the 12-step Suite over a number of months in 2017, so I suppose I can take the CTTE debut with a grain of salt.

Kind of wonder if Daniel Gildenlow and Ted Leonard will be available for those other dates, but if so, all the better as far as consistency, etc.

On a side/related note, Eddie Trunk's radio show has been enjoyable to check out from Cruise to the Edge. A lot of nice interviews and discussion.

Also 1 other thing, in checking some of the other clips out, there's 1 of Liquid Tension Experiment's song "Paradigm Shift" and it occurred to me while listening to it, that it has a very similar riff/rhythm to the King's X song "Moanjam"..which is odd how that I never noticed that before. And it makes me want to see like Ty Tabor and/or Dug join Mike and maybe Tony Levin sometime and play a mashup.

Or maybe Umphrey's McGee could, if they never do? lol.

Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day (2016-2017)

1/4/17 9:50AM

The video for Reasons is finally not country-restricted.

I can say I've heard a version of the new album and am liking this, but not probably as much as many reviews have suggested.

But as I just posted on Social Media, I finally noted which Cloud Cult "Sleepwalker"  has some eerie similarities to 1 of the tracks on this album. Almost now to the point, I hear the Gang-vocal chorus in it every time I play that track from this new Pain of Salvation album.

Also another track mentions "cutting to the bone" which reminds me of the Oceansize track "Meredith" and that lyric "cut you to the bone"

12/23/16 9:04AM

New song "Reasons," which I enjoy the vocals. The guitars seem doomy/dissonant, but I guess work with the song and may grow on me. Pretty lame that the YouTube video is restricted right now, but there are ways around that of course.

Apparently, VEVO.com doesn't allow embedding at this time which is lame.

Regardless, new track and video from the album. I'm luke warm about it. It's kind of slow/slow-tempo. But I do like the last couple of minutes.

edit: it got put back up on YouTube, and also it seems it's a remake of 1 of Ragnar's band old song.

Meaningless - Pain Of Salvation

11/10/16 9:55AM
Track list, and cover art? The post doesn't confirm the cover art, but it may be.

I react to the epics especially "On a Tuesday" being 10+ mins and the 15+ title track. It looks a bit like both classics, TPE and Remedy Lane in that sense.

Inspiration from Daniel's experience with flesh eating bacteria (per the link/text below from I/O music)

We'll see/hear soon enough.

Inside Out Music's Facebook

Swedish progressive rock/metal innovators Pain of Salvation have announced the worldwide release of their long-awaited new studio album ‘In the Passing Light of Day’ for Friday the 13th of January, 2017 via their longtime label partners InsideOutMusic.
Working together with acclaimed producer Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, etc.) at Dugout Studio in Sweden, the band have crafted an album that sees them returning to their much praised heavier sound, featuring the syncopated rhythms, glorious melodies, and intensely personal themes that Pain of Salvation fans have long loved about the band.
Inextricably linked to the near fatal illness that band-leader Daniel Gildenlöw spent much of the first half of 2014 recovering from, the album is an altogether darker and more impassioned journey. Taking the hospital bed as a narrative hub, the lyrical and musical themes touch on all the conflicting feelings that run through a person’s mind when presented with the prospect of death and the passing of life.
The album will be available as a special edition 2CD Mediabook (including expanded 48-pages booklet, several in-depth texts by conceptual author Daniel Gildenlöw, demo material & band commentary tracks), standard jewelcase CD, gatefold 180g 2LP vinyl plus album on CD as bonus & digital download.

9/30/16 9:23AM

Coming out on January 13th, 2017.

4/22/16 9:47AM

Not a ton of details save for the cover and whatever Daniel is referring to in June. But per a lot of updates and that short window of time, the details should come soon. What is Daniel talking about? the obvious guess is a new video or maybe new website. Perhaps interactive, or something. Maybe some novelty item associated with this new album of theirs?

a tour? I guess we'll learn soon enough.

Good to get some good news amongst all the Prince stuff the past 24 hours. I certainly am interested in this new album, even if my passion for PoS hasn't been really high for almost 10 years.

I probably should/and will make a Random Artist Feature about them soon, perhaps sooner per this news.

Facebook

There is some interesting news coming up in the next few days. I'm not the one to shower our fans with news about every little thing we do, since I don't... well, since I simply don't enjoy that social direction. So, in the last months we have simply worked on the new album, which is turning out absolutely awesome! The album title (which I know you have been waiting for and speculated about) is:
In the Passing Light of Day
However, we have also prepared another little surprise release for you all, scheduled for June. I can't wait to see how this will be received, but I have a feeling it will be very appreciated. 😀
Anyway, that about that for now, keep your eyes and ears open and you'll get more intel on the surprise release and the new album in the next coming days.
Wet kisses!
/Daniel
