There has been talk that PROG and the other magazines they published, could get picked up by another firm, which adds optimism.

As much as I have issues with PROG magazine and the conglomerate of Team Rock and the Classic Rock Magazine Umbrella, it is sad to see this happen.

I guess I have a few thoughts about this:

1) Their magazines, at least it seemed, including PROG were published at a HIGH COST. Color paper, including compact discs, artwork done up, etc, I can't help but wonder if these people were having to be laid off, could the magazine been made FOR LESS or even having LESS ADS if it wasn't so demanding of the material and style it was made in?

I mean I'm hardly someone whose an expert in Business, but that just is 1 perception in just how their magazines were manufactured. Paying so many people, etc.

2) I guess along that same thinking, their comeback could be that like newspapers, Magazines are sadly somewhat of a dying industry. The 3-dimensional kind anyway, and they may say they had to publish something more colorful and glitzy just to garner enough sales. Which would lead back to the Online stuff anyway.

3) The Price. Their prices, at least in North America were always too much for my thinking for what it included. $15 + tax, etc. But apparently that may not have been enough? lol.

Which makes me wonder what the future of that firm is and anything involving any of their magazines from the past. Maybe online only? I know you can buy them for your Tablet/Ipad, etc. Maybe doing that could be more cost-effective?

Also I wonder WHY they did this now and not say, AFTER X-MAS?

And if they cease to exist and be printed or even be online, what will the people laid do? Maybe something new will startup?

At least you do still have people like myself, altprogcore, The Prog Report, That Drummer Guy, etc still covering the world of progressive rock without financial demands. But if somehow something new pops up within a year or 2, and it's online, I would again say I would love to in some way contribute if they would have me.

And the PROG and Classic Rock Awards, I imagine will not happen again barring some kind of financial help from people (a Pledgemusic campaign?) Maybe they could be held On Cruise to Edge every February/March? That would be my suggestion anyway. Maybe renamed them the Cruise to the Edge Awards or something.

And while the lists from both of these sites aren't terrible, they are hardly reflective of my favorites nor most of the huge Yes fans favorites. Team Rock which has the "prog" contingent given they publish PROG magazine, did not include anything from Relayer,  yet they include 2 songs from the album that followed it Going for the One. Wakeman-bias?

Blah Blah 2010 Album Index Babblefest pt 1

This is one of hopefully 2 lengthly tangents/diatribes/diarrhea's-of-the-mouth/babblefest's that I made talking about albums on the 2010 Album Index. This 1st one mostly talks about the records on this entry which was the best/top 15 or so.

I'm not sure if the 2nd part will go as long as that 1st one, but we'll see. I shall say, because I have too much time on my hands, am too much in love with the sound of my own voice, and frankly, would like to do these kinds of things/recordings/podcasts on a more regular basis. I'm hoping to make them more than once-a-year or whatever. Hopefully with a friend or 2 as well.

Genesis gets into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in 2010)

Congratulations to the 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees!
Today, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges as its 2010 artist inductees. Also being inducted this year as individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award will be David Geffen and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Elle Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell. The ceremony will take place on March 15, 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and will air live on Fuse, Madison Square Garden’s national music television network, as part of the three-year broadcast deal between the Foundation and Fuse.

“We are very happy to present this year’s inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as they represent a great cross-section of artists that define the broad spectrum and history of rock and roll and people that have contributed immeasurably to our business” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President & CEO Joel Peresman.

The 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performer inductees were chosen by over 500 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twenty-five years after their first recording is released.

All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Through approaches as creative and diverse as the music itself, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum
tells the story of rock music with its exhibits, education programs and Library and Archives, which will open to the public in downtown Cleveland in late 2010.

Presenters and performers at the induction will be announced at a later date. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be televised live on Fuse; more information can be found at fuse.tv.

Surprising? certainly. As a Genesis fan, especially the Peter Gabriel work, I won't deny I am happy to see this. Even as much of a joke the Rock Hall in Cleveland is (or has been). Perhaps some of the people voting either a) changed. b) or wised-up finally.

The real evidence will be now having Genesis in there, Yes, Rush, The Moody Blues, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, ELP, even Kansas could follow.

I can't help but think about Kevin Gilbert right now. As huge fan of the Gabriel period, he'd probably be proud, even though I'm sure he felt/would-feel the Rock hall is/has-been as much of a joke as many others like myself.

Deep Purple, Kiss and many others The Ramones? etc should be in there as well. But with Black Sabbath getting in a few years ago it may-have (Metallica) finally changed a bit of the limits of that embarrassing instituition. So as Sabbath did with Metal, Genesis may do with progressive rock. Who knows, maybe Dream Theater and Marillion will find their way in there someday (Marillion would be even more shocking. Porcupine Tree would probably manage to get in 1st, yet arguably PT owe a bit to Marillion certainly).

I'm not sure why I should really care, but I guess it's the never-say-never. If things finally happen, it does change your feeling a bit. But on the other hand, if Gabriel and Phil Collins get in soon-after this, but it's 10 years from now and Rush and Yes aren't in, the feeling about that place and the doors this may open will probably just go away. Because frankly, Genesis were largely more commercially successful than any other "prog" bands save for Pink Floyd. Rush I Suppose is close in some ways, especially in recent years with tv, movie and talk show appearances and references. But Genesis were stadium-worthy back in the late 70's, and just Phil Collins himself probably became bigger than Rush or Genesis alone with his Disney soundtracks and #1 singles.

Plus as I just read Mike Rutherford mention in an interview shying away from the p-word; Genesis to me have always had a different aesthetic than other "prog" bands. It was never about chops with them. They wrote some longer songs, certainly, but they had more of a Beatles-approach to extended songs. It wasn't about chops, but transitioning moods and odd/non-traditional melodies. Theatrical-sense. You could actually call Genesis, mainly with Gabriel "Theatrical-rock" in a way. And to compare that to Dream Theater or Rush even, the emphasis wasn't as much about playing their instruments, but telling a (sophisticated) story.

So in that sense, Genesis were more like Floyd than the musicianship that prog is often thought-of.

Still, to have them finally get in says something. Let's hope it says even more for some of those deserving acts in that signficiant but largely-ignored (and laughed-at) genre.

I wonder what they'll play, or if Peter, Steve, and especially Phil will BE ABLE to play? a Gabriel-reunion from this is really a silly notion, but I'm sure some press will speculate about it.

Peter: I'm looking forward to checking out "Scratch My Back," the new orchestral covers album coming in February; however if this doesn't influence a reunion with the guys, perhaps it will at least give more evidence that the long-awaited I/O record actually will become more than just a name for a possible future album. It only has been 7+ years since Up, lol.

March: Bands, Prog Rock info, Concert Calendar

The new U2 album "No Line on the Horizon" I like. About 6 or 7 tracks especially I think work well. Not an AotY candidate or anything, but it's a nice change to being more experimental. Change in production and textures. I dig the piano and strings among others. The new single "Get On Your Boots" however, is probably the worst song on it, lol.

Doves hitting The Varsity Theater in May makes the upcoming concert plate a bit more frequent in April and May.

Classic Rock (magazine) Presents: PROG

I'm definitely curious about this new magazine, as I have enjoyed Classic Rock Magazine's special "Prog" issues in the past. So it appears they're going to try to do a semi-regular publication on it.

CLASSIC ROCK PRESENTS PROG

The already burgeoning prog rock scene receives another welcome boost with the announcement of the imminent arrival of Classic Rock Presents Prog, a new quarterly journal of progressive music that's set to offer prog rock fans a wealth of coverage of their favourite bands, artists and music.

Issue one sets out its stall by covering true giants of the genre like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes and ELP all the way through to modern day protagonists such as Dream Theater, Coheed & Cambria, Queensrcyhe and Porcupine Tree. New acts such as The Reasoning, Frost* and Demians find themselves nestling alongside established prog heroes like Marillion, Rush and Asia.

Packed with exclusive interviews, news and reviews, the whole spectrum of astounding sounds and amazing music gets the Classic Rock treatment in March. Issue One hits the news stands March 25. It's a date you don't want to miss.

Archive's new album is called "Controlling Crowds" and is listed to be released on March 30th.





The 1st single "Bullets" (youtube link above) I definitely like and am looking forward to this album a lot more than I expected. "Lights" from 2006 was okay, but not of the quality of "Noise" and "You All Look the Same to Me."

Fields album "Hollow Mountains" I've seen 2 release dates listed being March 2nd and March 9th. And of course "March." But with no track-list nor artwork, and some mention on their last.fm page about it's status and the band lacking a record label I guess, it's release date/time is really uncertain.

Kiss Kiss, Local Natives, even dredg to a point, kind of are (or were) in a similar spot. Local Natives at least, last night on the NBC show "Chuck" had 1 of their new songs "Airplanes" played for a short while in the background. Being a Street Team member and genuine hugely optimistic fan of theirs, my jaw literally dropped to the floor hearing that. The point being, they are a fucking great band, and more people should and I gotta believe will like them. Many of those Fleet Foxes ass-kissers (among others..Panda Bear, Animal Collective, Miracle Fortess even) are gonna find out when they get the exposure they deserve. They're just too damn good not to.

Water & Bodies began recording last week, what is I guess to be a 7-song EP that likely will be released digitally. CD and/or Vinyl as well, most likely available through their website and @ Concerts directly from the band. I'm extremely excited to hear these songs recorded after hearing samples live the past few months. I realize this is not Kaddisfly but it may be something even better for all anyone knows. And maybe best, going directly through them, it'll be available rather soon. Like perhaps by April or even earlier.

Soundscape's "Grave New World" I will be hearing in the coming weeks. It's been a 10-year wait, but I am without question overjoyed to finally get to hear it. Expect some kind of in-depth review on this blog among other spots soon after. My s/n on many sites isn't "Soundcape(MN)" for nothing of course :P. "Discovery" is a life-changing record for myself anyway. If GNW is even 1/10 of that, it'll be an AotY contender (to be honest, it already is).

dredg's new album "The Pariah, The Parrot, the Delusion" is coming out on May 19th (same day as the US release of OSI, wow!)

Mew's new album is expected in June.

King's X are headlining 3 Rivers Progressive Rock Festival I guess. Honestly, this is pretty surprising. Maybe it's a $ thing or I'm totally off on their current approach live. I would never expect them to play a "Prog" festival. But then again, many years ago Porcupine Tree did as well. Hopefully they'll do some more touring in 2009 and comeback to Minneapolis, a place they used to never skip (I saw them 10 times from 1996 to 2005 for example).

Muse new album to have a heavy Classical music influence?

Muse's new studio album could see them move away from their traditional rock sound to create a more "orchestral", classical offering.

Frontman Matt Bellamy said: "There's some really brilliant songs coming out, some of our best material I think."

The follow-up to 2006's Black Holes And Revelations is expected later this year coinciding with an Autumn tour.

Last month, the Devon band picked up the NME award for best live band for the second year in a row.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Bellamy revealed the record's sound could see the band abandoning their traditional rock leanings completely. We'll be knocking on Classic FM's door, you know

"A symphonic album has turned up here, like a full collaboration with an orchestra," he said.

"There's definitely a few things on the album which are segueing into each other and it's all very orchestral, but that could take over the album, so it could actually be kind of classical act basically, and move away from rock all together.

"We'll be knocking on Classic FM's door, you know?"
