Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2016 Nominations: Plus Comment: v. 2016

10/8/15 2:42PM

Here's a clip of 1 of the people involved with the Hall talking about the nominees and the voting process. He says "pioneered" the fan vote 2 years ago. 60 million fan-votes were made last year, and they want to top that this year.

The guy interviewing him failed to ask or point out how those 60 million votes made online from fans only factor in as 1 BALLOT, out of the 800+ ballots that are comprised of a lot of past inductees as he explains.

That's .00125% or 1/800th of the vote approximately.

60,000,000 submissions vs the other 799+ people who are inductees whose 1-ballot vote gets the same amount of say as the 60 million submissions, get the same .00125%.

60 million fans = 1
1 inductee = 1

Really fair and accurate, lol.

I suppose 1 argument against a larger percentage being given to the fans vote is, I'm sure thousands if not 10's of thousands of those "Fan-votes" factored into that 1 ballot result are done by the same fans multiple times, if not 100's (how much time do many of them have? some may get up every day and put in a vote at the same time for the 2 months the Voting remains open until December 9th).

Maybe if the Fans Ballot factored into a larger percentage, in order to prevent a fair amount of FLOODING, by the same fan/fanbase, perhaps a smaller voting period of time could be limited to say 1 or 2 weeks instead of 2-months. And they'd require the fans to sign up to an email list, and that email could only be used to vote once. However, I'm sure there would still be flooding and people voting plenty more times. But it would at least likely reduce the flooding.

But, that still doesn't address the lack of the percentage the FAN VOTE is given. I saw something earlier about Deep Purple received the 2nd most votes in the FAN VOTE in 2013, yet obviously 4 others got in ahead of them, despite the tens of millions of FANS who felt they were the 2nd most deserving act on the ballot.

The other thing that should be addressed is the NOMINATION PROCESS.

http://www.futurerocklegends.com/Nominating_Committee.php

that link shows the list of people who have been on the committee, and for 2015, it shows 41 names. That's good to know, but like the VOTING PROCESS, the NOMINATING PROCESS is still highly arbitrary and not fully representative of everyone's taste. Beyond the voting, the FANS should have some involvement in whose actually nominated each year.

Either that, or some involvement on whose on that Committee. It almost could be done like a political election.  Take 40 or 50, or fuck that, let's say 100 People to this committee, and have at least half or more of them turned over every year. Have some kind of Term Limit on how long someone can be on the committee. And once their term is over, they can't return to run for the committee for at least a couple of years.

Yes, Deep Purple and Chicago among the 15 nominees for the 2016 Rock Hall Class.

5 of which I recall, get in.

My prediction: Deep Purple will finally get in. Unfortunately Yes and Chicago may not with the likes of NWA and their biopic, Janet Jackson and Nine Inch Nails on the ballot. But I'd love to be wrong.

Steve Miller Band may get in, The Cars and Cheap Trick. I dunno if both Chaka Khan and Janet Jackson will both get in, even though I would not argue, they both belong in. And of course Chic again gets nominated, 1 of these years they may finally get in. It would be nice, just so their annual nomination slot can go to someone else.

The Smiths may get in, for the College Rock hipsters vote.

But I also want to share a comment I tried to make a little over a week ago on a blog which has some people that almost do Rock Hall annual predictions like Fantasy Football or Oscar Pools.

I tried to post this comment, but it has yet to actual be published and allowed there (not sure if the blog owner never saw it, or just doesn't feel it should be allowed to be public at this point).

But as I have said a handful of times from memory in here and on social media and message boards in recent years. The Rock Hall and its voting + inducting process, while it seems to be changing a little bit with some prog and metal finally showing up, really could use a more dramatic change in the process of who decides and HOW MANY artists get in every year.

per
https://northumbriancountdown.wordpress.com/2015/09/14/rock-hall-prediction-round-up-class-of-2016-edition

have you and the others ever done some research into how/when and what it could take to dramatically change the process? I've come to conclude, the Rock Hall process could really do for a format change.

instead of 10-15 nominees every year, double that and have 20-30. And induct at least 10-15 every year.

And a percentage of that is designated as a "veterans committee" thing like The Baseball HOF does.  Have 5 nominations every year that have to have been eligible for at least say 20 years, and at least 2 get in every year.

The Fans vote is worth a lot more than the 1 out of 800 or whatever it is now. Have the voting process both for the Nominations and the Inductees be decided

-1/3 Fans
-1/3 Recording Artists/Music Industry People
-1/3 Music Media.

Like the Baseball HOF, the MLB Allstar Game (Starting Lineup) Ballot is setup this way, and at least on the surface it does seem to be a more accurate representation, than it was long before when it was just decided only by the Media.

While all of this may seem dramatically different, and it may also come across as "letting everyone in" and lowering some kind of standards for whose in and whose not in; the fact is, with so many newly eligible artists each year along with so many artists passed over so many years/decades and then dying, not then possibly able to be present for a recognition of their life's work. A larger roster being included at least could help those causes, along with possibly even the joke-perception the Rock Hall gets (and Jan Wenner and Friends exclusive club mentality).

I suppose it's baby steps, with a few years ago adding the 1 online Fan vote, a bit like the long desired NCAA Football Division I playoff system, but I hope the changes can continue to be changed and modified.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (short videos)

Here's some short little clips I shot during Joyce and my trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night in Cleveland as part of a private party with a boatload of desserts for the Archive Conference she is attending this week/weekend here in Cleveland.

We only had a couple of hours, so that is partly why they aren't longer I suppose, and I was trying to conserve battery and space in my camera.

I took a lot more pics which are on my personal Facebook page, and I imagine are not visible to those aren't friends with me on there.

But I'll try and share per uploading onto Photobucket I guess.

here's 1 (Janelle Monae's jacket and shoes).

 photo DSC01048_zpsuiymiqsf.jpg

As far as the Rock Hall itself, maybe not now, but perhaps in the next week or less, I may give a bit of a review about it, having now finally seen it, etc.

1 other note of course that I took a photo that's on Facebook, 2 Kevin Glbert connections are there, 1 being a LYRIC sheet for the Sheryl Crow song "No One Said It Would Be East" (which the title makes me think of the Cloud Cult song, which has absolutely no connection I don't believe).

And the fact there was a Herb Ritts exhibit featured there last night/currently, since of course Kevin or Johnny Virgil  mentions Herb Ritts in the song "Certifiable #1 Smash" which I'll admit to never having heard his name before then. But the Madonna connection with Ritts and Kevin's work with Madonna on the Dick Tracy soundtrack along with the Toy Matinee song "Queen of Misery" kind of follows how Kevin could have known about Ritts directly (if not also knowing the videos he made with her among many others).

Rush: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction (Entry 1?)

1-story they are featured.
http://ultimateclassicrock.com/rush-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-induction/

I watched a boatload of Rush videos last night on Youtube (and am hardly done yet!, lol), but I have yet to see these. I still say, having Dave Grohl induct them (as opposed to many other, more obvious artists they influenced or more entertaining even like Jack Black or Stephen Colbert, would have been better.

But that being said, I am looking forward to watching these and other videos. The HBO broadcast:

1) why is it on HBO? most people, including I'm sure a ton of Rush and other RandRHOF inductees, don't have HBO. I would hope it'll be streamable online soon after it airs on their exclusive/overly-expensive channel.

2) Why is it not airing until 1-month later? Talk about not living in the moment.

Some comments on mp.com suggested it'll be poorly edited, which it may, but you figure, given it IS HBO, it wouldn't have to be.

Rush inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

12/13/12 12:35AM

I just stumbled upon an interesting website http://futurerocklegends.com
Here's just a few things they provided about this year's Inductees

http://www.futurerocklegends.com/blog.php#unique-entry-id-288

The good, the bad and the ugly of the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee announcement:

The Good:

  • Quincy Jones was finally inducted into the Rock Hall. Whatever history there may or may not have been between Jones and the Rock Hall was set aside to do the right thing.
  • Public Enemy getting inducted on the first ballot. It may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, but the Rock Hall sometimes whiffs on these no-brainers.
  • Rush getting its first nomination and promptly getting ushered into the Hall of Fame, like they should have been there all along.
  • The death of the blackball. Will the inductions of Rush and Jones, and the nomination of Deep Purple, put to rest all of the conspiracy theories about a blacklist?
  • No back door inductions. The Rock Hall shouldn’t get credit for not doing something absurd, but we should at least acknowledge that all of the inductees are in their proper categories this year.
  • Keeping the induction ceremonies open to the public. Let’s hope this is a permanent change and that New York will get an induction ceremony at Madison Square Garden next year.
  • Involving Flea in the induction announcement. It’s a great idea to make a bigger deal out of the Hall of Fame induction process by including enthusiastic Hall of Famers like Flea.
  • The predictions. Maybe the Rock Hall is getting a little more predictable, but fellow Rock Hall expert, Tom Lane, nailed all six performer inductees back on October 25th.
  • Amazing. Our predictions are here.

The Bad:

  • The snubs. Let’s face it, the Rock Hall could have easily inducted 12 of the 15 nominees. It’s great that the Rock Hall is now inducting six performers instead of the usual five, but the back log of snubbed artists keeps getting longer and longer.
  • The ballot rules. Why does the Rock Hall let its Voting Committee only vote for five names when there are going to be six inductees?
  • The Rock Hall completely neglected the Early Influence and Musical Excellence categories this year. This is puzzling, since there are still plenty of deserving candidates.
  • Speaking of Early Influences, the Rock Hall still hasn’t set up a “Veteran’s Committee” or “Pioneer’s Committee” to properly address the pre-Elvis era. This should be a no-brainer for the Hall of Fame since no one would be opposed to this. There likely won’t be a live stream available of the induction ceremony since HBO holds the rights to the edited broadcast. The Rock Hall was ahead of the curve on this back in 2007, but they have given in to their broadcast partners.

The Ugly:

  • The comments on the Rock Hall’s Facebook posts.
  • The Rock Hall’s handling of the announcement press event. No live video of the announcement? Are you serious?
  • Rolling Stone infuriating every other publication by jumping the gun on the announcement embargo.
  • The official fan poll. Joel Peresman announced that there were over 500,000 votes from the public, but that only counted as a single ballot among the 600 cast (or is it 500?).
  • The 50% “rule.” The Rock Hall still has on its website that inductees are required to appear on at least 50% of the ballots to be inducted. This is demonstrably false. Like any other year, there are things to criticize about the inductees, but on the whole, this year will be seen as a positive step for the Rock Hall.

The list of "Snubs" is quite interesting, as it's kind of a summary of a lot of the artists that have been eligible, and how often they even got nominated. Many artists have been eligible for well into 2 decades and still have not even been nominated once.

edit: I still mean to elaborate on this either in this entry, or another. Time of course, that elusive thing. Hopefully either tonight or maybe tomorrow sometime. I will quickly add, I for some reason think Jethro Tull is the next prog band that will get in. Why I say that is they were more accepted by the masses and hipsters than Yes for some reason. They won a Grammy and just don't receive the wank stereotype that Yes (and ELP even more so) receive, thus more people will probably vote for them. But to me, other than Purple and some other early/heavy Psych/Prog, YES is the obvious next name that should get in.

Anyway, hopefully more soon about that.

Rush, Heart, Public Enemy, Randy Newman, Donna Summer, Quincy Jones and Albert King. No Deep Purple or Procol Harum (or NWA for that matter). I'll add more later, mainly about PROG and the Rock Hall, sort of updating the Genesis post from a few years ago. But in the mean time..

.

http://www.vita.mn/crawl/172669701.html?page=all

Why not for the rest: Sorry Rush fans (some of whom already begrudge me), but those musical wizards haven't cast their spell on rock outside of their fanatical fanbase. Kraftwerk’s influence is cultish, and its albums are generally overrated. Joan Jett and Heart are among’s rock’s greatest heroines but were otherwise not all that pioneering or unforgettable musically. The Butterfield Blues Band also did not brand much original music nor was it a major presence. The Marvelletes and Procol Harum are B-listers at best.

hey Chris Riemenschneider, care to eat some crow?

Rush and Deep Purple on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame BALLOT

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH (WHICH MAY NOT BE A WHOLE LOT):

1 story

Go Here to VOTE

from Rush's Facebook

"We are honored to be among the nominees for this year's Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. We are especially thrilled for the many, many dedicated RUSH fans to whom this nomination is so very important." – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart

Go here at 3:11 of the video above.

Not a ton to say other than the fact the stories about how Rush (and others) are not in, or should have been in eons ago, should be funny to read leading up to knowing the results. I suppose even if they don't get in this year, they may get nominated again due to the fact they are finally nominated this year.

The whole opening up the Flood Gates for progressive rock bands to finally get in (as I posted here December of 2009) when thinking about when Genesis finally got in a few years ago, still may be far-fetched. But if Rush and Deep Purple do get in, Jethro Tull, Yes, ELP and even King Crimson may find their way on to the ballot soon after. The members of those groups being alive to attend if they got in may be an entirely different story (see Jon Lord).

I might vote for both Public Enemy and NWA, but I suppose by voting for them, it is like a vote against Purple and Rush.
