What if KEVIN GILBERT was still alive? (2.0)

I made these 2 videos yesterday to remember and revist this topic of the video I made "What if Kevin Gilbert was still alive? (2015) , and went further with it. The actual notes/script was fun to, especially with this 2nd part. I truly believe he could have written music based on that article in The New Yorker, that Gemini believes was titled "The Polymath." Which definitely has a bit of a Walter Mitty element to it.

I suppose I could try putting up the notes about each song, but not yet as I need to get going right now.

I do have some things in the works of course that I haven't posted in here. Last entry was in February. Been using Gemini to empty my head in recent months. Joyce's birthday and Record Store Day. Of course the Video Blogs on YouTube have been an equivalent. I do have a size-able update to my Vinyl CDs and Graphic Novels to show, that I should soon.

I also have a lot of writing to do in Joyce's substack. And the plans for the Podcast, the new Instagram page, etc. Hopefully soon...

When The Shaming of the True Multi-Disc comes?..maybe next fall?..i hope so.

Life's Failures

I feel like I should have a sign on my head and back that states.

I  have 

Sports: The thing I loved the most as a kid. I dreamed of being a Major League Baseball player. I later felt like I wanted to be a Sports Writer, Journalist and even Radio show host. None of that ever happened. I wasn't a great athlete, but was okay. I played Soccer and Basketball in High School, but never was a starter on the Varsity. I maybe peaked when I was in Junior High. I drank coffee in and 8th and 9th grade which may have stunted my growth.

I felt like I knew more about Sports History and Statistics than most if not all my peers. But ultimately it didn't matter. I didn't want to work in some small town and have to do the "Who, What, Where, and Why" way of writing. I wanted to do and write MY OWN WAY. But that ultimately was never going to work. 

College: I went to a College Prep High School and like most there and my peers, was expected to go on and earn a degree and get a professional job. Well, I spent 1 year away from home at a 4-Year State College that was had a LD program. However the person who ran it, left when I started. The LD program was limited and beyond that lack of help, being depressed and struggling to be motivated in some of my classes, I failed out. I did well in some classes like English and a Government class. But my Pre-Calc math class and the Geoology class got me bad. Too much homework and the grading oin a curve didn't work for me. I also had a class the 2nd semester that I didn't attend for many weeks, I got too far behind in, and I also couldn't drop. I might have been able speak to the professor, but it was too late. 

So, I failed out and owed money from a loan. So I left the College, went on to a CC and worked. I did okay at the CC, even got an internship at a radio station, but even that was sort of limited and I didn't impress them enough for them to want me to continue. Cutting tape, gathering sound, faxing newspapers at a sports station. The interns going into that field likely had to start and be in a small town for many years to have a shot. Plus it didnt pay a lot and was competitive.

I decided to pass. I would have liked to have done radio, HOW I WOULD WANT TO DO IT. And not going to work in the middle of nowhere and living miserably.

Radio: I volunteered at KFAI while working a FT job. I wanted to play the music I loved for more people. I subbed many times and volunteered at station events. Applied for like 10+ shows in 3 years, and wasn't picked by their Program Committee once. A lot of the shows were either Midnight-2AM or 2-5/6AM. I was a Night Owl, but ultimately those hours were still challenging from a schedule and sleep cycle.

I doubt I would have kept that weekly gig for many years if 1 of those shows was given to me mostly due to the hours. But the fact I wasn't selected once out of like 10 times still has me view this as a failure. I should have been picked. But I wasn't. 

But I also believed and actually still believe, I should have had and still have a chance to do a radio show playing progressive rock and my other favorite things at a reasonable hour. 6pm-10pm? or A morning or afternoon on a weekend. But it may never happen given how a lot of these radio stations are run.

I also pursued internet radio, but that got to be a failure before it even started. Too many others doing it, having to pay royalties and needing permission from the artists and labels. Blah Blah Blah. TOO MANY HOOPS TO JUMP THROUGH.

The same can be added to Podcasts (which I in a small maybe non-failure way, I may have figured out a workaround).

And of course I played a song I shouldn't have on KFAI and had to go away until I returned where I met Joyce which was a Success at least in that way.

Blogging: I kept a livejournal and then this blog for over 20 years between the 2. This blog has reached some, but it still is undeground and talks about things no other blogs really talk about. Social Media though I feel could be in some ways, what could see it as a Failure. 

It wasn't cited on Twitter and Facebook like it should have been. The limited subscribers given how much content and time has been put into it suggests that. Is it fair? no. Is it a Vanity thing for myself? yes, but I still see that to some degree as a partial failure. By comparing it to other music media sites and people, it is a HUGE FAILURE. 

To me, so many of those people who write about music are boring and my content is better. MUCH BETTER. Is it due to lack of an editor or the grammatical errors? In my HEART I don't believe so. It's not about perfection, it's about COMMUNICATION. If I was PAID TO WRITE IN HERE. Franly, a LIVE-ABLE WAGE, the editing and grammar would be more prioritized.

However, I would still have the LAST SAY and still be the editor myself. That is how I feel comfortable writing. If I take a writing class, I may have to give in and compromise that, but just on for what I do IN HERE, THIS IS MY SPACE TO WRITE. It is 100% driven by MY OWN approach. Thus, I don't like being edited or having my words changed by someone else. Even if grammatically they may be better.

I want this place to be 100% ME and I own it. I know many great, successful writers and bloggers have ediors. That is where I feel I stand out in a good way to me. Me Myself and I (I know it's self-centered/selfish in that way).

YouTube: Started in 2014 with very little expectations. 812 videos and 478 subscribers later. Failure? uh huh. So many other people have done it with in much less effort and time and had way more success. Why I still think it's destined to go on a long hiatus at some point. Is it fair? no. The algorithm, not being female, not spamming people and trying to force-feed the algorithm my channel. YouTube hates my channel. In some ways the polar opposite of this blog or was with Google.

I figured 1 Million Hits in like 11 years in this blog with this same name? that alone should have warranted 1000 subscribers. People sometimes watch but don't sign-in and subscribe. Joyce did that very thing. Stupid fucking algorithm.

The videos go 30-50 minutes often? yes. It's unedited and a podcast. Why should that matter? people have shitty attention spans? Or I'm just not good at it. I'm boring or not engaging enough for people. I know I talk about obscure, unknown bands in there. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT. But even with that much obscurity, it still should have found more subscribers. Some of the most boring, wastes of time on YouTube have a ton more of a following. People are impatient and don't care. They really don't. People who know my channel also don't care to help. Should they? well, if they cared, yes. But they don't care, or care enough. 

So yes, it's a Failure.

Music: Getting and being an expert in progressive rock, Getting bands like dredg, Kaddisfly, Small Leaks Sink Ships, sElf, Pepe Deluxe...all these bands that way more people should know and like, DON'T. And Kevin Gilbert..same story. From a numbers standpoint, no they don't care and don't give a shit. It's only a small number of individual people who have ever reached out to me and cited me. And for those, I totally appreciate it. But, it should be more. Frankly, WAY MORE. Even in some cases when I review something or talk about a band or artist 1st, am I cited?..no. Not very often. It's not fair, but regardless, it's a failure for the most part.

It's still a failure if the goal is to be credited as being 1st to the punch or even helping out that little band out.

Psych: Myself along with my friend John did a podcast, that was low-fidelity and not setup with RSS. Or most importantly, not really acknowledged by the people involved with the show. FAILURE for sure. 

And the show itself is not referenced or talked about as much as it should. Other shows, sitcoms and things are more so.

CON: I tried doing things at CONvergence and even MarsCON. Like a room with sync-ing movies with albums. Or even being able to use another guy's room to do that. It never happened. Complete failure. That may have been the whole great-idea-on-paper that wasn't practical. Paying ROYALTIES and then all the babblinng on in the busy areas in the hotel killed most of it. It sucks. Too Much Money and work

Sorry, but I didn't have the time and money to invest my whole year into planning a weekend like that. Too many Hoops to jump through, Having to register over a year ahead of time, pay for passes and then the other fees, Getting a room in a good location where people will find it. Blah Blah Blah 

No, and the social aspect of CON sort of went downhill anyway. Too clique-ish and people got offended easily...sorry, but it didn't work. But, thus a FAILURE.

Job/Work/Career: To be included later or elsewhere

Marriage/Relationships: Before I met Joyce, my longest relationship was like 1 month, lol. Women never approached me. Finding a woman into my interests was super rare and challenging. Now with Joyce, it was not identical interests and passions either, but somehow it didn't matter for her and me. We made it work But I can't say my goal of finding a woman who loved my music or other things was a major success with Joyce. But the relationship and love was. Except now, she is gone. So, it was not a Failure for how long it lasted, but it wasn't a lifelong success, not due to any fault of my own. 

Should I have bugged her to go get a physical? yes. Survivors guilt now.Joyce was strong willed and super stubborn, so I was trying to keep the peace, But did I FAIL her in that sense? maybe. Her Fate with her health may not have been much better had I. So, it wasn't necessarily a failure for what I could have done. However comparing it to so many others I know who have or may have lifelong relationshis and marriages?..yeah sadly, even my marriage of almost 9 years and 14+ year relationship still feels like a failure.

But I was born with a health condition when I was an infant, and I may not have not survived it. I'm not sure, so in that sense I am a success by still being here at this point, if I want to look at it that way. Had I not survived, I wouldn't have tried to do all this stuff though.

I may publish a book some day, or actually feel like I received more gratification from the things in my life I (have tried) to do. But that remains to happen or be seen. I am trying my best to keep going, But to deny that a lot of these things I hoped for 1 result, did not find that result at this point, is something I can't deny I believe.

But what is the common denominator with all of this stuff? ..ME

Bots and YouTube...

 I didn't fully realize, but the more I think about it, the lost views and the gained and lost subscribers I see on my YouTube channel are due to Bots.

Bots watch and sub, and then unsub. They get flagged by YouTube.

And when I get new subscribers and don't see who it is, there;s a good chance it's a Bot.

Lovely..blech.

Another reason my plans at 1000 videos make sense...

But of course many views are from non-subs of course, lol.

Music Release History Radio Show/Podcast and PLAYLISTS (immediately) Update

The plan is looking to be:

YouTube: likely on Pause at or around 1000 videos barring something changing to focus on this in the short and maybe long term. Shorts and.or TikTok on the other hand may be still done. This likely will be sometime in 2026 or 2027..maybe 2028 even. It mostly depends on when I hit 1000 videos 

Instead of 20 Songs and 3 hours..it'll likely be more like by decade

60's: 5 songs 

70's: 5 or possibly up to 10 songs

80's: 5 or possibly up to 10 songs

90's: 10 songs or possibly more

2000's: 10 or maybe closer to 20 songs

2010's: 10 or maybe closer to 20 songs

2020's: 10 or maybe closer to 20 songs

Windows of time:

Selecting 1 month that includes songs from releases released in January along with the releases from the previous month and the following month. Aka a 'Season" and a part of the season that, that month is. So the following months are considered:

January: Early Winter (+December and February)

February: Mid Winter (+January and March)

March: Late Winter (+February and April)

April: Early Spring (+March and May)

May: Mid Spring (+April and June)

June: Late Spring (+May and July)

July: Early Summer (+June and August)

August: Mid Summer (+July and September)

September: Late Summer (+August and October)

October: Early Fall (+September and November)

November: Mid Fall (+October and December)

December: Late Fall (+November and January)

So January (Early Winter) would include songs from December and February,
February (Mid Winter) would include songs from January and March, etc

And the songs chosen are intended to be nearly all from the information I have on the release Date or Month.

Playlists and then a podcast at some point? Initially, a Playlist and I may do a writeup (or script per say). The hope would be if the time is allowed, to record an actual Podcast where I get to play historical DJ and put it up on Substack or Mixcloud. Clips? well..not ideally, but that may find a way to get around copyright concerns (and Mixcloud or Substack vs YouTube, Spotify, etc).

And the Radio Station name (or Podcast even) may be called KAMR or WAMR
(AMR = All Media Reviews, K or W being common for the 1st Letter in a Radio Station depending on location based on where they are broadcasting from relative to being East or West of the Mississippi River I guess).

Doing the same Month/Season multiple times? yes because some albums/releases will not necessarily be included due to the song/time limit. So going back to a month/season would make sense depending on how committed I get. It may be several years though before the same month/season is done again.

Research? while I've done a lot, there's still a lot to do of course. I estimated, it's approximately 720 Months/Seasons going back to 1965 through the present. I will do as much as I can, but also may do some on the fly aka I have many of them in order and listed, but will miss some, and then go back at some point. Hence that among other reasons to plan to do the same Month/Season again eventually.

So, this was kind of fun/funny to do, of course on of all days, today.

And the subject just crossed my mind, today should be an annual day to listen to that Fair to Midland tune.

But, I've been meaning to write something more about Social Media, specifically YouTube. The etiquette and maybe a few other housekeeping items,

When someone sees your channel or a video you post, especially in the case where they themselves have a channel of their own. They may subscribe and leave comments and like. If they are a YouTuber themselves, they know part of what is beneficial is to comment and like.

But I just know there's plenty of YouTubers and even just people on the different Social Media platforms that do not do this. It's mostly just a 1-WAY STREET.

They want you to watch their videos (or just follow or like their posts on other socials), subscribe, like and comment. But it does seem others like myself have to almost blatantly spell it out to gain their attention to even be aware of my channel or socials. And even if I do that, they may subscribe and maybe they will comment and like (if watch) 1 or 2 videos or for like a week or 2.

And in many cases, they don't even do that.

Unless they see your channel (or Social Media account) as more impressive or bigger and something that if others are giving you attention, than they may as well.

But when you don't have the large numbers of subscribers or followers, they don't necessarily.

That is PLAYING THE FAVORITES.

It's selifish, or lazy, or judgemental, or just kind of passive-agressive.

Social Media and it seems a lot of YouTube should be A GIVE AND TAKE.

I scratch your back, and you scratch mine. 

But if you don't have "status" to be appealing enough to them (1000 or even way more subscribers), it really doesn't seem to matter how many times you like, comment and even pass their videos along (and how much detail your comment has), they still don't give a shit enough about YOUR channel to follow-suit.

I mean I will confess, there are people who have subscribed to my channel who I check out their own channel and I don't subscribe. But almost all of those cases, either the content on their channel doesn't appeal to me (and is next to nothing like my content), or their content is very limited anyway.

But I'd say at least 3/4 of the time someone subscribes to me, and I look at their YouTube page and they include something I remotely can relate to or enjoy, I will subscribe.

And I would say I do make an effort to leave them comments on topics I can comment about.

But there are several channels I comment on, or did comment on, pretty detailed and somewhat regularly, who have yet to ever leave even 1 comment on any of my 776 Videos. And even in some cases, the subject matter (mostly music and Prog), they have made videos themselves about. And in at least 1 or 2 examples, I noticed said music (band/album), done after I talked about it.

In other words, they are mooching off my work, my channel, etc, and yet I've never seen them once admit or acknowledge that. It's like it would kill them to do so, because they don't like to admit that a smaller channel actually introduced them to something.

I mean it could be that they just don't like to give credit to other channels. I can only half understand that per the whole idea of  "well, if I shout out this channel, well then I have to shout every other channel" chore. And then they'll forget people.

But, that doesn't change the fact they are finding something and telling YouTube about it, and not being fully honest how they found it. Maybe the *how* shouldn't really matter? I just see it as lazy if not practicing being a favorites player.

You know, and it does extend beyond YouTube. Go back to twitter and 89.3. I was talking about Local Natives and Warpaint long before most there, and yet never even once got any kind of due. It's lame, unfair, and something that I will never consider justified. But its happened and will continue to happen.

I would even say, many channels and Social Media I continue to comment-to or like on, that I guess I don't expect as much from given my feeling about the people. But I'm not certain how long or consistent I will continue to do that just based on the fact they don't reciprocate back to me. Not enough.

It really should be a GIVE and TAKE. But so many people, some I do have closer relationships with and want to help them out as much as I can genuinely, I don't think see using YouTube and Social Media that way.

They don't see it like a Social Contract to be using and trying to promote their own content. They see it as, ok, here's my video or post, please like it and share it, etc. But thanks for doing that, however the thought never crossed my mind to do the same for you who chimed in.

Maybe it's a lack of time? I dunno, but at some point, I have to draw a line and just say, sorry, I can't anymore. I have done that with some. But I also feel like given I'm at 776 Videos. Once I hit 1000 Videos, I may just to do a HIATUS for at least long form videos until I hit 1000 Subscribers.

No exceptions. 

Sorry, I've made 1000 videos, I deserve 1000 subscribers. And until that happens, my focus may be other outlets like this and the Substack. I might do Shorts or TikTok as I've mentioned. Or I may do an audio and/or video podcast. Mixcloud, Soundcloud, or just on Substack even. Unsure.

I mean it's 224 videos away, so that is probably over a year, maybe 2. And that may be enough videos and time to finish some of these projects I've done, I dunno.

But at least my feeling is given the lack of GIVE-AND-TAKE and reception/attention/recognition for my YouTube channel, if I put the time and effort into making 1000 fucking videos, I should be able to at least get 1000 subscribers as well. (probably way more actually, but I'm trying to be as realistic as possible).

When You Feel Like Your Taste is in No Man's Land

Been feeling this way for ages, but maybe more so relatively recently.

Bands I love, champion and try to promote, just don't do much or get a comparison that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Pepe Deluxe is a big one. I get it, they are inspired by and similar to some of these genre-blending artists that are only appealing to a certain demographic.

Mr. Bungle of course. Thrash Metal meets Ska and Pop with even some quasi-rapping? and older styles (50's/60's lounge?) and Soundtracks.

Pepe Deluxe don't fit all of that exactly, but the DJ element and quirky style just doesn't work for many including progressive rock fans. Why? well, for one, many progressive rock fans are much like pop fans, rap fans, metal fans, etc..their tastes and open-mindedness and patience isn't all that high.

They like their prog a certain way, it has to have certain things, otherwise, no thanks.

Small Leaks Sink Ships, similarly, I find them brilliant and unique sounding. Their vocals are kind of odd and quirky, but not over the top weird. And the songs have a lot to discover. But progressive rock fans, even people who enjoy "indie" etc stuff, don't find them impressive and immediately engaging.

It's like so many of these music fans have short attention spans, so even if they might like their music with time, they'll never give their music enough time to know.

I suppose I am guilty of that somewhat as time is a valued commodity, and honestly, I am much more attached to Talk Radio and podcasts/YouTube than even investing a certain number of hours with many albums I have yet to hear or hear enough times.

But it doesn't change the frustration and just apathetic feeling about others liking music I love if it's not well known enough.

Even Bend Sinister. They are hardly super niche sounding, but, they're from Canada and they channel Classic Rock too much for some people. Maybe it's just there's too many other bands and albums for them to compete with, i dunno.

I really do want to try and make those shorts with clips for Facebook and Instagram and maybe TikTok. Although I don't think TikTok has the ability to add from a music database like Instagram and Facebook does. 

I wish there was a way to access the database of song clips online. And I sadly have concluded, it's only available on a Phone of course. So, what I likely will want to do is some combination of shooting a brief clip or image of my physical copies on my Phone and then upload it via the phone. I just am skeptical if a lot of super obscure music is available on there like Distrails or Brice Plays Drums or something. Maybe a lot of them are. A lot of Kevin Gilbert's music of course is not, but Toy Matinee and Thud are at least.

But finding a long if not complete list of the database of clips Instagram and Facebook have I don't know if is available. It might be worth posing to somewhere on Reddit actually.

Because I sort of envision doing like a Short/Story of a Song of the Day or Song from an Album of the Day at least. or more ideally, 5 great songs from 2005, etc and then include a pic or video showing the 5 albums (vinyl or cds likely) and then it plays a clip from all 5 in the short. Aka a REEL of course.

Ideally, that would work, but I'm thinking more practically, it'll just have to be 1 song from 1 album or just 1 song per clip. But if it works, so be it. Beggars can't be choosers.

Afa as all the Projects..MPAR Calendars..my immediate plan is to do 2008 and then 2009, likely 2 videos for each year given the length. And then take a break. 

I will then likely go back to the CD's A-Z.

And maybe, just maybe I will also start the Movies of the Year.

The Kevin Gilbert Shaming Tracks series will be anticipated. Massive deal, but a super labor of love much like the Thud Tracks. It will all be contingent on when the Shaming Multi-Disc arrives.

Yes, 2024 AOTY video is coming, probably next week. And there's a laundry list of albums that will be MIA.

And a 2025 Preview video. Unsure if the Calendars will be done again or at least as often. Maybe just QUARTERLY + anticipation (which felt like a lot of REHASH doing this year at times)

And the thing I proposed towards the end of the Prog Corner's Sunday stream last week of a Top Albums of the 2020's So Far now that we are 5 full years-into the decade,

I'll make a video for that, and if someone else doesn't do 1, I should create a topic on the DTF and maybe Reddit for it.

I can say though, my belief for years now, 2000's > 2010's > 2020's

And there's a big gap between the 2010's and 2020's. Granted, it's only 5 years in for the 2020's and we have 5 more years left. And of course there's a lot of 2020's albums I have yet to hear, that I may in the next 5 years+ anyway. But no, as of right now for my taste, the 2020's is a big dip in depth. I'd love to be wrong or off, but the 2020's could for me, very likely be the lightest decade for favorites and great albums since the 1960's actually. But we'll see in fairness. At the end of 2029 or in 2030 2031, I may not feel that way.

The Social part of YouTube continues to kind of get to me as well (FP's). 423 Subscribers and I make those epic MPAR and AOTY videos and barely anyone watches them. They still have value to me, even just for dictation. But it goes back to is YouTube fully worth my time and effort? 

I do still want to make a MPAR doc or doc series. Voiceover and using stock footage or pics, but you know instead of having the ambition of doing 5 year periods and whatnot. I should try and just make 1 video that just scratches the surface. Maybe talk about 5 albums only. Or maybe 10.

And I sadly MUST write a script for it.

But it's something that to put on expectations from a time frame standpoint is maybe not best. It could be made in a year, it could 10 or more years. I suppose if I actually didn't need to work. You know, the day I reach retirement in 19 years or whatever, I could at that point in 2044 or whatever, give the needed time to actually be able to create 1 given my lack of work hours obligation.

That's also assuming I'm alive and not suffering physically too much to be able to.

I dunno, maybe the Calendars and like a Playlist. Then maybe Ranking Videos actually. But if I do them, I guess I would limit them to a Top 10+ HM's maybe. Maybe that'll be it and maybe I go back to just writing about MPAR instead.

That was my original plan anyway. And maybe it's just in this fucking blog. No book deal, etc. Just in here for now. I dunno.

I just feel Modern progressive Art (and Atmospheric) Rock deserves a documented story, and I'm 1 of like 3 or 4 people who could tell it. And I would like it to be done and then out there to be discovered by current and future music listeners, 20, 50 even 100+ years from now. And if I don't do it soon, it may never be done (or it'll be done by someone in a few decades who was not around when it was happening).

Also I wish I could curate my own radio station. It may seem kind of silly, but i could sort of do a fantasy/fictional Playlist. Spotify and/or YouTube I suppose. I dunno, maybe Internet Radio could be in my future at some point like my friend Rai on Wild Dogs Radio. That fantasy of a Station that throughout every week, would play songs from a different year around the clock. Every hour, a different year, the following year, etc. Hypothetical, but it would be neat.

 So I finished this series on my YouTube channel last week. Finished sharing the last video yesterday on Social Media.

And while time can tell how far it reaches, the numbers as of right now tell the story.

I'm pretty proud of this, having analyzed and given somewhat thoroughly every track in depth for Thud, an album I do love. I mean it is from Kevin Gilbert who is a super unknown name, but still people at least seek his music out on YouTube (even though most of it is not there right now).

I just feel like what James Bickers said about things going right under people's noses. Thud is a great record that a lot more people should know it, including so many of these other versions. But as of right now, they would have find a download somewhere or buy them from the Estate..or on ebay or discogs or whatever.

But they should. I dunno, there's not much more I can do. And I will look to do this again I think at the point the Shaming Multi-Disc comes out.

People want to sleep on brilliance and great content..their loss I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh and the View Count numbers are not correct as I have given evidence of how YouTube's new-ish algorithm removes views.
