I just went through and created 1 of several Playlists among the 610 Videos on the YouTube Channel.

I would guess more than half of the videos in this playlist I shared in here, but so be it. It's a 1-stop shop and it's for the most part in chronological order.

edit: I just reordered them to be in full chronological order.

If I felt like it and had the time, I could try editing clips from these into like a 30-45 minute documentary, but who knows I would find it worth doing.

A lot of the videos I did when I started doing YouTube were just these; showing vinyl and from Record Store Day specifically per it was an easy, obvious thing to film.

The clips with Coco our dog and John are probably most of what I get out of these. The stories, sure, we had some adventures and anecdotes to pass along in the whole Record Store Day experience. It might have been interesting to even had filmed them when Joyce and I started going together in 2011, or even further back with the 1st few years. Per, I have gone every single year since 2008. Those early years it was more about getting free food, lol and schwag. Maybe seeing some celebrity there or whatever.

I dunno, the people involved with RSD should chronicle the history in a doc. Maybe around the 20th in 2027?..it would be especially cool if it were done just locally from Minnesota history for myself just for nostalgia.

I suppose I could have even posted about it back in 2008, 2009, 2010, etc..I know I wrote about Record stores back then, but I'd have to look it up in here to remember.

edit: Some reports are saying that his death could have been a SUICIDE. I truly hope not.

Just 52, sheesh. About the same age as George Michael just a few months ago.

I guess I can just add.

1) I never was that much of a fan of Soundgarden, but I remember the cook at Southview Country Club who I would talk to about music in the kitchen in the mid 90's told me I might really like their album Superunknown. I never really checked it out, only knew "Black Hole Sun" etc. But among the Grunge bands, I probably could/should have liked Soundgarden the most. They have/had the biggest Led Zeppelin influence.

And his voice, while screechy/scrawny sounding if that makes any sense, actually wasn't bad. Much better than Cobain or even Eddie Vedder (or Layne Staley from Alice in Chains).

2) Of course I probably relayed the story once or twice in here, but I want to say it was at Record Store Day in 2010. Either 2009 or 2010 he showed up at The Electric Fetus. I saw him and just had to ask "Do You Know who Kevin Gilbert is?" and his reply was "Yeah, I do. So what?" Which I didn't exactly take to be all that polite, but whatevs.

3). His brother Peter Cornell is also a musician/singer and fronted the somewhat short-lived late 90's/early 2000's prog band from Nashville, TN? Somnambulist. For what that is worth, whether Chris Cornell would have ever cared to admit it, he did have some progressive rock ties in that way. And I guess Peter has released some of his own solo music since.

Somnambulist were actually scheduled to play at Nearfest in 2001? but canceled unfortunately.


At any case, this is sad to see. Chris was a friend, fan and big supporter of Jeff Buckley and his music, I noticed especially after he passed away. Chris and Brad Pitt basically. Odd and almost ironic too for me given like Prince I did sort of meet him, although among 100's of others at Record Store at the Electric Fetus, but it does weird me out a little bit about another brush with fame dies in as many years.

edit: Also Soundgarden were fans and friends-with of course King's X. Influenced by them, etc. Which I've said it many times, Soundgarden, AIC and especially Nirvana and Pearl Jam saw success where King's X did not unfortunately.

This video came out, overall pretty well. A lot of stuff about The Monkees stuff of course. We didn't tell every angle to our story of course, namely the change in plans before hand about going to multiple stores simultaneously, etc. And how we went to Whole Foods on Snelling for brunch. Along with more about Joyce's dog Coco's health concerns.

And as I mentioned, I shot a bunch of short clips during the day that I will try and edit-together if the Premierie Elements software doesn't require 8 hours to create/make/save, etc.

I still though mean to pickup a copy of Peregrine from The Appleseed Cast and that Hello Kitty Picture Hello World disc for Joyce. I saw them both on ebay, although the auctions may be over now, but there were multiple copies of both.

And it wouldn't shock me to see them at other stores down the road (like the Sigur Ros album was from a past RSD I recall).

My head/arm was cutoff unfortunately, but this stuff is a work-in-progress anyway given this is the 1st time I've tried making a video with my gf.

Students at McNally Smith cover DT's "Octavarium"

I just wanted to pass this along for among others, fans of Dream Theater and progressive rock, especially in Minnesota. I'm not certain if all of the players covering this Dream Theater piece are students at McNally Smith, but at least Joel Thielman is given the way the video is labeled.

Good cover. Not that there aren't plenty of other well made, even more original interpretations of this piece on Youtube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, etc out there, as I'm sure there are. But I guess other than the fact the performance is quite good, and I'm sure it required a good deal of time and practicing together.

But the fact it is a group of MINNESOTA MUSICIANS COVERING DREAM THEATER, should say something about PROG ROCK BEING AN INTEREST IN MINNESOTA. Not only to fans, but upcoming, aspiring musicians.

It would be nice if the savants over at 89.3 or even KSJN or Radio K might be aware of this. Even the other obvious local hipster resources like Citypages and The Electric Fetus. Now the Fetus have carried some Dream Theater in the past, but featured them? I doubt much. Like would they even consider trying to have the guys do an in-store for the show in April? somehow I doubt they are on the top of their in-store request list.

I even know someone who works at both the Fetus and McNally Smith actually. I wonder what their thought of a group of students covering a 23-minute progressive rock piece for their recital?

But those issues aside, this is another example of some musicians from my hometown who dig progressive rock and Dream Theater, and may hold hope for more of this kind of (original) music being played, and hopefully written and recorded down the road. I seem to recall the Media Addicts (RIP) members attended and graduated? from McNally Smith as well.

Valid Criticism: 89.3 The Current

MPR’s The Current Plays the Same Old Tune

This a good article, as well as THIS (http://www.crookedsaws.com/2013/04/15/what-happened-with-the-current/ ) about sad reality of what 89.3 is (and to an extent WHAT IT COULD BE, BUT IS NOT). I have written many times about this in my blog (allmediareviews.blogspot.com ..just search "89.3" among other tags). I might think, like Pitchfork hypocrisy with Metal, it may actually take someone The Current likes and RESPECTS TO CALL THEM OUT for them to actually change and at least come close to what they could be.

The 1st thing I think they could and should do though is get rid of the snob-ish impression and influence they seem to narcissistically force down the music community in this town's throat.

Not that I would go out of my way to find these kinds of articles on a regular basis. And I'll reiterate/admit, after the Music Meeting a few months ago, hating on 89.3, maybe mostly the people involved, I sort of feel has lost much of it's steam/fire to me.

But, the articles I just found, are probably still worth adding to the support of the lack of interest in their station. Probably in their influence on the music community in town here (along with Citypages, First Ave and even The Electric Fetus a bit..the local music hipster monopoly, and how they have sort of hijacked venues I used to love like The Varsity Theater and The Cedar Cultural Center to an extent).

But here's what I put up on Facebook after my gf shared it earlier. I do side with her about 1 little thing, being the shot at Fountains of Wayne. Not that I love them, but they are not as indicative of the problem with 89.3's playlist and countless others.

But I may have to get in touch or become acquainted with Matt Peiken and Opine Season in some way. I don't think he mentioned there about still being involved with KFAI, but perhaps I could still be in contact with him per the station.

this post I made on mp.com is probably worth sharing again. Not that the Varsity Theater really has any concern about it, but it doesn't change the fact something should be able to be done about it, and it likely never will.

I really LOATHE the way some of these concerts, the ticket sales get BOGARTED by the SCALPERS and all the tickets are sold out in 10 Minutes, and then soon after put up on sites like Stubhub.com for 2, 3 or as much as 6 or 7 times the cost.

The Venues don't seem to care since they are still selling out their shows.

It happened last year for the Gotye shows (in Minneapolis among other towns), and it just happened with Fitz & the Tantrums. The venue, The Varsity Theater, usually sells some tickets via their sister club, The Loring Pasta Bar. But they decided to make the Fitz & the Tantrums concert on June 17th, an ALL-INTERNET sale show. Tickets went on sale on the Ticketfly.com link to their site, and they were totally SOLD OUT in 10 MINUTES. I find this out on Saturday when trying to buy tickets in person at both The Loring Pasta Bar and another Ticket outlet, the record store, The Electric Fetus. I then check Stubhub.com and find 82 different tickets being sold on that site for the show ranging in prices from $72-$155 PER TICKET, which were sold on TICKETFLY for $25-$35.

Something should be done about this unfair system for selling tickets. But other than Presales, I'm not sure what. SCALPERS have gotten away with this BS for decades, and it never seems to end.

Dear 89.3, Radio K and others..

I am a volunteer at KFAI, I know about pledge drives. But I guess I can't help but still raise the question when hearing your drives on the air.

How often do they play my favorite musician of all-time, Kevin Gilbert?
How often do they play my favorite band of all-time Marillion?
How often do they play one of my favorite bands of the last 5 years, The Dear Hunter?

The same might be asked of Citypages, The Electric Fetus, both the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press music sections, even Vita.mn to a lesser degree. Did Citypages include much about the upcoming Kimbra headlining show that is SOLD OUT at The Varsity Theater? no, not really. They found Mike Snow to be more significant of a concert to feature next Tuesday. Why? I'm not sure, but perhaps because he's playing at First Ave?

Amoeba Records interviews Doctor Who

Nice interview! I imagine it was convenient to do when Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were appearing at Comic-Con in July. Sadly, I have not seen more than 1st part of the Series 6 Premiere thus far, and didn't even know there'd be a *spoiler* in this interview revealed.

But so be it. Having finally watched the Psych Season 6 episode Dual Spires tonight, and being completely caught-up with that show (and now really, even more wanting to watch/revisit Twin Peaks, given that episodes cast and obvious theme), I am kind of wanting to catch-up on Doctor Who. Funny too, as the two stars agree on the band "The Who" given the name of the show, lol.

Now, if only Cheapo or The Electric Fetus could bring those two, or any other television series stars in for a similar kind of appearance or interview. But we don't have anything as big as San Diego's Comic-Con I suppose.
