OT: What We Left Behind Star Trek Deep Space 9 Documentary

Deep Space 9, what I have considered my favorite television show of all-time.

This Documentary was in the works from Showrunner Ira Steven Behr for many years.

I caught it a couple of weeks ago for a special 1-night Cinema screening, and meant to write up a review soon after, but haven't found the time until now.

On the Documentary itself:

Pretty thorough and long (2.5 hours I recall).

A lot of interviews including all the leading Cast. Avery Brooks who plays Sisko was in there, and there was some time talking about him, however for my money given he is the Lead character in the show, I would have liked more. And I plan to pickup the DVD which I'm sure has a lot of extra footage and interviews, with him included.

Not much with Max Grodénchik and some of the other regular guest stars on the show. Although there was a lot with Andrew Robinson who played Garak at least. But people like Salome Jens, Rosalind Chao, Louise Fletcher, Ken Marshall (Eddington), and even say Mark Allen Shepherd (Morn).

But the reunion(s) and meeting with the Writers (aka Writers Room) was fun. Ronald D. Moore, Robert Hewitt Wolfe and some others including Ira Steven Behr, creating on-the-fly for like 1 or 2 days, a hypothetical 8th Season. And they adapted the premise/ideas to STORYBOARDS, was pretty cool.

And seeing the High Definition footage and on the Big Screen added a lot. The clarity and detail does make a lot of difference, so much so, i am with many fans in that to see the whole show remastered and released in this would be something I would pay for.

Now the explanation, especially Post-Credits, explained how much of a chore it was to EDIT so many specific clips to make montages from those original tapes. And I highly applaud those who did all that work (countless hours I imagine). Also those who contributed to the Crowd Sourced campaign for all those extra details and work I applaud.

So, this did mean a lot to me because Star Trek Deep Space 9 means so much to me. Why?

Here's the story (however long or short this might get).

I grew up as a Sports Nerd, but a Nerd none-the-less in a lot of ways. And I always liked Star Wars. But Star Trek? I watched The Original Series, from memory, when I was at my Grandma's and I recall not liking it all that much. The Spock character I remember being scared of, or at least not liking. I thought he was bad or evil and he was stronger than everyone, which I suppose he was.

And I remember when The Next Generation came out, but I rarely watched it. I got the impression TNG was for dorks, and I didn't see myself as a "Trekkie."

So after High School I ended up being even more of a Night Owl than I was in HS, staying up late listening to Sports Radio, playing Sega and for a brief period, Playstation games (like 95% Sports games at that point).

But in being a Night Owl and renting movies and watching some late night TV and/or what I had taped while I was gone during the evening per I worked 2nd Shift hours for awhile there.

What became the local UPN and now FOX affiliate carried both new episodes of DS9 and the previous season episodes, LATE-AT-NIGHT, including on Saturdays 3-hours/episodes. So I stumbled upon it 1 night I recall March or maybe February of 1997. I forget, it might have been earlier than that. But I remember the Spring of 1997 I was totally won over by DS9.

Why? I think a lot of it had to do with how IT WASN'T LIKE STAR TREK. It explored more normal, everyday human(oid) issues. It felt in some ways like seeing human life 350+ or whatever years in the future.

Also I was definitely going through an uneasy time with life. I had stopped going to college and had a job that was supposed to last for many months, that did from September/October 1996, but one day in early April I recall they called me off that job. I was a contract or temp, but it was supposed to be for maybe a year or more and they might hire me on. But for reasons I can best explain as a struggle I had and honestly still have and likely always will have, caught up with me I think.

So, DS9 was like therapy or an escape. It really gave me something to latch onto and not be sad about my current life situation.

And the characters were really well written. Very down-to-earth in a lot of ways. I suppose 2 characters most, the Jadxia Dax character. For one, Terry Farrell was and still is extremely beautiful. But I also found her portrayal of Dax both nerdy/geeky but also warm, kind, and welcoming. She just came across often as someone you loved her presence and felt like seeing and hearing her talk, you felt good. Often better than before that happened.

The other one I find is Odo. Partially given the Changeling species was really cool. The ability to change form was in some ways the kind of Scifi stuff I found fascinating. That and his character, with being an outsider and kind of having his own agenda I really related to in a lot of ways. And like Terry Farrell, I found in many episodes as the series went on, Rene's portrayal was very sympathetic. I at times almost felt more for his position than the Federation's.

So, there's a ton more I could get into about this show and the characters and why it became my favorite television show of all-time, but that may have to be saved for another entry.

"The Visitor" episode though I should include as that 1 episode may have been the biggest 1 to bring me in. I was in tears after seeing it. "The Jake Episode"..both Cirroc Lofton and Tony Todd were so good in that episode. It's so heartbreaking, yet it still ends on a happy note in a lot of ways.

Also the fact being a DS9 fan got me into Star Trek as-a-whole. I enjoy TOS a lot more now and TNG. I like Voyager and even Enterprise, especially since seeing the reruns on H and I.
And also Scifi (television) in general.

Discovery?..nope, but I totally dig The Orville which basically is Star Trek, unlike Discovery which is totally not Star Trek.

So, I may or may not do more on DS9 soon. or even consider start writing about some of my other favorite TV shows. I put DS9 on top, but I kind of place a few others near it; Cheers, Beavis, Psych, Gilmore Girls and some others.

When I enjoy TV, I almost love it as much if  not more than Music. Like movies as well, which is why I would like to start writing about entertainment outside of music (Sports? the Minnesota Twins for example are 36-16 and playing out-of-their-minds right now) in the near future, especially given I finally found 1 million hits.

I suppose at the point I pickup the DVD maybe I'll do another entry on this and maybe DS9 (I could probably do a handful more, including something more about the Babylon 5 comparison thing which was not really brought up, but maybe it will be in the DVD?)

As I've written probably a few times, Deep Space 9 is my favorite television show of all-time (ahead of Cheers, Beavis, Gilmore Girls and Psych among others).

There's a long-winded explanation,/story etc that I'm not going to type out right now, but perhaps soon.

But given that, this is a REALLY BIG DEAL to me.

I suppose 2 questions off the top of my head about it:

1) Will the Jadxia Dax/Terry Farrell leaving/contract/Becker thing be explained and afterthoughts, etc from her and the whole cast and crew (and fans). Because while I still enjoyed the 7th season, like many, when she left (spoilers..killed off), the show lost a little something. I liked Nicole DeBoer, especially given the circumstances, but o what could have been had she just stayed for the last season. And I liked Becker and her in it, and Danson (Cheers), but it wasn't DS9.

2) Babylon 5. Unlikely, but the whole drama with JMS and similarities, would be nice to be discussed finally in detail.

edit: also apparently it's not Kosher in this Babylon 5 Facebook Group, lol as I shared it and wrote "OT" and it was deleted and my posting access has been removed for 24 hours, lol.
ANAL, and there has been discussion in the past in that group about DS9, but some people are a bit too sensitive, lol. I don't feel too bad as the same Admin has locked a bunch of other not-directly-related topics in that group.

I love B5, but really? the admin in that group and I have noticed some of their fans are uptight as hell. It wasn't SPAM in the least, and in many ways related along with something those fans would likely want to know about/see (and might not before the 13th).

3) Movie, ending, etc..obviously. An 8th season?

but yeah, maybe I'll try and find the time to write-up my whole story with DS9 and the Spring of 1997 sometime soon. Maybe around when May 13th when I see the documentary.

COMING SOON: Monkees Album Release Dates (comparing them with The Beatles, Beach Boys...)

It likely won't take days or all that many hours, but after seeing the common quote from media interviewing some of The Monkees, talking about how they outsold The Beatles and BB's (or The Rolling Stones?) combined.

It makes me want to look back at release dates of The Monkees albums and when certain Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones..maybe Hendrix and The Who (and Pink Floyd and Zeppelin perhaps)

Also some of the British Invasion and West Coast Psych/Jam bands. CSNY for example per Peter Tork's friendship with Stephen Stills.

I know the Monkees guys went over to England when The Beatles were making Sgt.Peppers, so the thought might be, what was the latest Monkees album out at that time?

I also may try and look at TV Air Dates with the likes of Star Trek (TOS) and maybe Batman as those are 2 shows The Monkees show sort of get associated with. I think some of the scenes were shot at the  same studio, and the same production company? etc.

I may even check out the ole tviv.org with TV Lineups when the show aired.

The Monkees - A Better World

Ever since learning of Peter Tork's death the other day I and maybe even moreso my wife thought of him and THIS SONG.

See, my Monkees-lifer wife felt that THIS song "A Better World" was actually the best or her favorite track from the much praised Good Times! from 2016.

And it seems to receive very little to no love or attention!

It's really wonderful. The string arrangement, the sort of sad, cynical and in some way optimistic way it sounds and the lyrics specifically.

And so in thinking about Peter, this tune does not seem to leave my head.

but I may be siding with my wife now.

This is such a haunting, sad, beautiful tune.

And Peter never performed it live, I don't think. Not with The Monkees anyway, maybe at 1 of those solo shows he did in 2016 or 2017? I'd have to look it up.

It is kind of haunting me now..like his or his brother Nick's feeling about food and Global Food supplies. Why are people starving when there's more than enough food to go around.

It reminds me of "Earth Song" from Michael Jackson or a conversation I had with Johan Hallgren of Pain of Salvation in 2002 or 2004 at ProgPower USA.

In this song, it seems we are in a "Better World" and like Star Trek alludes to, starvation and famine are gone. A thing of the distant past, etc.

"Joytown" from Kevin Gilbert also comes to mind. Sort of a dream/fantasy utopia in some ways.

Rest in Peace Peter. Hopefully this song will reach even just more Monkees fans now posthumously.
I'm sure now you are living in this "Better World."

Maybe your brother Nick will at least be around to see that.

Scifi Movies/TV/Stories involving Artificial Intelligence and Evolved/Advanced Breeding

This is a work-in-progress/Incomplete list of Movies, Television and other examples in Media of enhanced humans or technology.

I made this with the stuff I've been taking-in over the last 6 months or so involving robots, androids and genetically evolved or advanced humans in Scifi.

I.e. I had some stuff like Logan's Run, Blade Runner and Westworld which I had never seen before, and coming across more about someone like Philip K Dick and his life story. How many things in Hollywood were based-on if not at least largely inspired by his work.

There are a couple of documentaries on YouTube, but I guess they aren't great. Hollywood or some independent filmmaker needs to make a quality documentary or Biopic about him.

Anyway, I'm about to start watching Westworld from HBO, Season 1, after having seen the original movie and sequel Futureworld finally (the new James Franco thing looks awful btw).

I may try and make some kind of Video or Podcast review of Westworld and its umbrella. I don't foresee being able to find Beyond Westworld sadly though as it was short-lived (3 episodes).

50 Years Ago Today: Hey Hey We're the MONKEES!

Like Star Trek last Thursday September 8th, Today is the 50th Anniversary of the Premiere Episode of The Monkees Television series.

I honestly didn't realize Star Trek and The Monkees premiered the exact same year and even within 1-week.

More talk about the 50th Anniversary of the Premiere/Pilot should be happening, but is it? it doesn't seem so much, despite the excellent new album. And not like Star Trek even last week.

Today is MONKEES DAY. Social Media should be flooded with it. I guess I'll be curious to see if it eventually starts trending within the next couple days at least.

Confirming reports that first surfaced last summer, MTV announced today that Beavis and Butt-head is returning with new episodes. Mike Judge is back as the main creative force, and of course, the voice of the title characters, who were last seen in a cameo in Jackass 3D.

EW.com reports that MTV made the announcement at their Upfront presentation in New York today. The network hasn't revealed yet when the new episodes will debut.

Wow. I have about a "bazillion" (as they say on the show) thoughts, or potential thoughts about this. Let's see how much I can cover here.

a) This is one of my favorite television shows or any kind of humor/entertainment of any kind to exist. So, for that fact, this is a REALLY big deal.

b) I have often wondered what the show would be like now. Technology, the internet, cellphones, ipods, I mean in the 14 years since it went off the air, a lot has changed. Technology, the music industry, reality shows. There's a WEALTH of pop-culture resources to use in an updated version of the show, now in 2011.

c) Could this hurt or taint the legacy of the show? I would hope not, but part of me is a little worried about this.

d) Is this a sign of desperation on Mike Judge's part? I would hope not, but part of me can't avoid asking that question. Why now? the economy? lack of success/jobs for his other work?

e) I have never, I don't believe, had something this significant in terms of my entertainment interests, return like this. TV movies/specials, or even feature films I suppose. But it's a bit like if Cheers came back now. Or in a looser sense, for people who loved the original Star Trek, when The Next Generation and Deep Space 9 came in. Or Galactica more recently.

e2) and along those lines. Could this taint the originals legacy? As long as they have Mike Judge doing most of the work he did on the original, I have hope. Although, part of me wonders if Judge himself will be able to hit on as many cylinders now, so many years later, like he did with the original show. I mean look at The Simpsons now? case in point.

So, those points all in mind, to say this is something that I'm excited about would be true. This almost feels like in 2006-2009 anticipation and then realization of the Soundscape album coming out. Huge levels of nostalgia. I think the nostalgia factor may allow this to work, at least to a point, no matter how good or not-as-good it actually is.

Hehe.

Now, maybe a Deep Space 9 movie/mini-series/reunion will happen too. That actually might top this for me, if that's possible. Or Freaks and Geeks as well.

Jeremiah (TV Show)

So after approximately 6 weeks of airing 4 episodes every Thursday, The Scifi Channel finished airing every episode of this show this past week. Albeit edited given the fact it originally aired on Showtime with nudity and profanity among some other non-censored elements.

My history with this show. I was/am a J Michael Straczynski fan of course with Babylon 5, one of the best Scifi or any kind of dramas on television over the last 2 decades. After that, he went on to start, but then get screwed over by TNT with the Gary Cole B5 spin-off show "Crusade." Which did air 13 episodes in the summer of 1999. I liked "Crusade" and have always felt it was a shame it was not picked-up by SCIFI or another network; but actually that Summer of 1999 I knew off the bat it was done sadly. So in a way it was like watching a Mini-series.

Fast-Fwd. Towards the end of Star Trek Voyager's run, the next ST franchise was talked about. And what ended up being the largely disappointing Rick Berman created "Enterprise," could have, and frankly SHOULD HAVE been JMS's next project. Maybe the failure of "Crusade" impacted that, but more likely, Paramount was still in bed with Berman, and JMS's pitch, much like it was turned down nearly a decade earlier, wasn't given much chance as I have read. Of course the whole Babylon 5/Deep Space 9 story many know about. The paralells, etc. I will just say that was certainly 1 case of when I'm glad they didn't give JMS the greenlight, since as a result, instead of having 1 classic Scifi show, we got 2. And DS9 also I will always trace back to my 1st real love of Scifi and Star Trek.

So, what I presume went down, JMS had this show "Jeremiah" which is somewhat loosely based on a comic-book series by a Belgian writer named Herman Huppen. A deadly plague known as "The Big Death" has wiped most adult humans, and the kids have had to grow up in the post-apocalyptic world. 90210's Luke Perry and The Cosby Show's Malcolm Jamal-Warner star.

I rented the 1st disc from Netflix a few years ago, but never got around to renting the rest of the 1st season, nor the 2nd season of course. The premise sounded interesting. Reasonable cast. And maybe best, it was from JMS.

Now finally having finished watching both seasons, I will say it was certainly one of the better Scifi shows to come out this decade. I really liked the adventures and uncertainities they explored about how the world was, rebuilding it, and starting-over. The 2nd season wasn't as good as the 1st, but they did add Sean Astin, which interestingly was maybe at his peak of stardom just following the huge exposure he got with the LOTR movies. His character towards the end of the show references humans re-setting of some kind. It's 16 years since the "Big Death" and now that the kids from then are old enough, they are going in a similar struggle as a race.

They also added another character the 2nd season in Libby, who has a connection to Jeremiah working with his dad at "Valhalla Sector." Not to spoil it entirely, but her character of course has more than one side, and she ends up connecting with Jeremiah when they meet through her dad at the beginning of Season 2. What transpires later with her and her work and life with Jeremiah isn't fully explained unfortunately. Bad enough her character does not stay throughout the whole season, but I really wished they'd told more about her background with coming to Valhalla Sector and everything else that led her to do what she did.

Overall, this show definitely stands out among stories I have read/seen about post-apocalyptic worlds. That idea, when done well, is an appealing story idea in Scifi and all fiction really. Although "Children of Men" sadly could have been done well in a similar way, but unfortunately I didn't feel it succeeded. The dark tone, and in-your-face war and violence kind of killed that movie among some other reasons. However, getting to experience this show and it's story, I have renewed faith that it can be created in a beneficial and entertaining way in Hollywood.

Put it up along side the likes of great short-lived shows like Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Freaks and Geeks, Brimstone, etc.

The biggest thing now I think is, it still leaves me wondering if/when JMS will get a chance to do another show like this. Just scanning his credits on imdb, it looks like he's doing a bunch of work in films now, which makes me curious. Judd Apatow's path became that in fact, maybe he noticed and is following suit. I still could go for him directing an episode of Lost, perhaps Battlestar Galactica (the show that reminds me most of B5 since B5 ended), and course someday still Star Trek. Hopefully Jeremiah can be another piece to add to why he should have those opportunities if he so desires them at some point.

FANBOYS: New Star Wars Parody

Free Enterprise was a cult favorite of many William Shatner and Scifi junkies like myself. A funny and somewhat biographical film about two average guys who were very into Science Fiction and movies. The film was well written, funny, and maybe best of all, it didn't take itself too seriously. It also came out before people knew who Eric McCormack was and WILL AND GRACE had aired.

A sequel to FREE ENTERPRISE had been talked about and posted on imdb many years ago, and it looked like it may finally happen about 18 months ago with the end nearing for WILL AND GRACE and some other factors. However, it never did, or has not yet. And even it's sad to say just recently, the listing on imdb was removed. Hopefully it will comeback at some point.

So William Shatner does not have that coming up, but for those looking for something vaguely similar, he appears in the upcoming 2007 comedy "Fanboys."

Along with VERONICA MARS star Kristen Bell , STAR WARS, and some other notable hollywood cameos (Carrie Fisher, Christopher McDonald) this new film could be one to remember looking for in 2007. From the trailer it seems like it could be using the mocking humor that exists in the rivalry between Star Wars and Star Trek fans. And just the plain geek-mocking that can be done really well in the right context with Science Fiction fans.

FE 2 may or may not happen, but FANBOYS atleast potentially, could makeup for those down about no plans of a FREE ENTERPRISE sequel.
