Lock Horns: Essential Prog Metal Albums

i may add more later, but for now here's my comment.

not too surprised; Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning, maudlin of the Well and SikTh are nowhere to be found. Also Burst (whose album "Lazarus Bird" I find better than any album Mastodon ever made) and Green Carnation's "Light of Day, Day of Darkness" are sadly not even in the spectrum of this list. That being said, the list is decent, although I don't care for Tool nor most Meshuggah, but instead of 10, this list probably could have been a Top 20 or 25.

Baliset (Greg Massi ex-maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot's band)

http://www.retconrecordings.com/
Baliset on Facebook

I wanted to post something about Greg Massi's band Baliset. I have recently become pretty addicted to the podcast Greg's been making Color of Air and so it naturally came to me to check out his main/current band. Greg of course was a member of maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot in the past, and he talks and interviews previously, frequently about those projects.

Although those 2 projects were not music he wrote I guess, but more contributed Guitar parts and primarily? solos. Anyway, so Baliset is largely HIM and his own music/band (although he's not the only member).

Baliset have released 2 albums as linked/posted below. Exordium, their most recent EP from 2013 I guess is sort of a precursor to a concept album that Baliset has been working on for a few years and looks to release in the near future. The exact timing of that is a little up in the air, as Greg has talked about on his podcast, it's a matter of finishing it, including the lyrics/concept part of it.

But as far as Exordium, I enjoy it; the 3 tracks are sort of a mix of atmospheric Folk Rock/Metal with Female and Male vocals. The 1st track starts out like a pop/rock track, but a couple of minutes in, it changes mood. From quiet, transitioning to faster parts. Greg has some vocals along with his guitar parts. Vocally, he almost reminds me of the singer from Sound and Shape.

Some of the dreamy vocal harmonies and clean guitar tones used on this EP standout as much as anything. The blend of acoustic and electric guitars, works quite well, sort of showing different influences simultaneously. A little like Jethro Tull or Psychotic Waltz in a way.

And Shannon Kelly's vocals almost make me think of bands like The Gathering or Aghora I think it was, who were an  atmospheric Metal band with clean female vocals.

I also like the way samples are used. In nature, almost like field recordings samples.

A Time for Rust, the debut LP includes some very nice atmosphere and blends of styles. The use of acoustic sections into heavy, thrashy guitar leads. A sample from what sounds like Winston Churchill under some uptempo guitar work works pretty well on the opening cut "These Moments Are..."

"Black Light Moon" is a nice ballad that along some of the interlude pieces, is a nice diversion. It's a pretty simple track, that actually would probably do well on radio now, or even in the late 80's.

"Dreamflesh" is one track I am enjoying the more I hear it. It has the electric-guitar driven parts, with a soft, pretty bridge with Shannon's vocals and some acoustic guitar, until going back to some wah-wah pedal guitar echoing.

Maybe my favorite piece on this album is the closing track "The Echo Box" which like some other Baliset tracks, goes from Heavier, electric guitar led, to an acoustic section. But then around the 5:50 mark, goes quiet. A minute or 2 later, some static comes on and leads to this cool upbeat folky part. Which reminds me of some classic rock tune that I'm spacing on, Also it sounds like tablas or djembe or something being used, which I actually think of among others, Kevin Gilbert's Thud work, or even the intro to his cover of Kashmir for some reason, lol.

The guitar solo on "The Echo Box" works really well in tone, mood, mix. It's really a great way to end the album on an upbeat way."So help me disappear, help me disappear...waiting for so long, waiting for so long..All I can do is sit..and wait..to pass the time. To pass the time. To pass the tiiiiime."

Music Collection Videos: Kevin Gilbert, Apes and Androids, Jeff Buckley (28mins)

Another video, which was the other one I was thinking of initially trying to show in these. This is primarily cds. Some other rare items as well. I just wish i realized how far away some of the items I showed were to the camera.

Also the Kevin Gilbert + Madonna collaboration (he did the "cues" or some of the engineering I suspect) I didn't show (and forgot to mention) is for the Dick Tracy Original Soundtrack. It wasn't shown, but perhaps in another video.

Subterranean Masquerade - Home EP (2013 + news)

I'm incredibly excited for this. New 7" EP and plans for the band to enter the studio to record their next full-length. Will it be "In Pastille Colors"? or maybe called something else. Their debut record came out nearly 10 years ago.

Israeli/American outfit SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE, which features in its ranks Paul Kuhr of NOVEMBERS DOOM on vocals, has set "Home" as the title of its new EP, to be released in March.

Eight years after the release of SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE's acclaimed album "Suspended Animation Dreams", "Home" features two tracks: the new title cut and a cover version for THE MISSION UK's"Beyond the Pale". The effort was recorded at various studios around the world with a lineup that included drummer Mathan Shmuely ofORPHANED LAND, bassist Mike Feldman of NOVEMBERS DOOM, and Arabic orchestra, featuring violins, oud, bazuki and lyra. According to a press release, the EP contains "lots of vintage keyboards and the band's heaviest guitar parts ever."

Says SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE songwriter and mastermind Tomer Pink: "We got so excited while writing this long-due follow-up that we decided to release a two-track EP as a teaser for the album. This is gonna blow people's minds!"

"Home" was mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY,BLOODBATH, NIGHTINGALE) at Unisound studios in Örebro, Sweden.

The EP will be released only on seven-inch vinyl for now and will be available to pre-order directly from the band. It is limited to 300 copies only —100 transparent orange and 200 regular black. The artwork was created by longtime collaborator Travis Smith (OPETH, KATATONIA).

SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE plans to enter the studio later this year to record a new full-length album.

I don't think I shared/posted this ever on here. But it probably bares sharing to emphasize my interest and excitement about the return of this great band again.

It's really a tastefully composed concept record about a guy and a dream or dreams? Conceptually, I'm still not too deep into it, but musically, it is incredibly tasteful. It's like progressive folk-rock with some subtle sax and rich, soaring strings at times that leave a mark in your mind everytime you hear them. The vocals kind of minimal at times, and then maybe one of my favorite parts of this band, is how they blend the death growls with such character. You can make-out mostly everything their singer says in the harsh style. And it fits really well throughout, with the moods of each section or part of the music.

Also not to be missed, how pretty they use the female vocals in this album. They work really well on an emotional level. I'm not sure who they got as singers (in spots they are in a group, and other times it's just 1 female singer), but to hear them on a progressive death album is not something I recall hearing about too often.

I mean sure, they do remind me of groups like maudlin of the Well, Agalloch/Sculptured and even Opeth. But there is without a doubt a really unique approach to songwriting. I guess it's one example of music that successfully combines harsh with beauty. Heavy with gentle, etc. Much like bands such as motW or Pain of Salvation have done as well. But perhaps not in this specific approach. Almost like if Jethro Tull or King Crimson added some death metal to their sound. It's very organic, which is kind of rare now-a-days.

I recently purchased their previous EP "Temporary Psychotic State" which is also in the same vein. Very much foreshadows what the band would do soon after with SAD. It's only 2 tracks, "Temporary Psychotic State" and "Observation Through Metamorphosis" which clocks in about 17 minutes long. In a way,  you could attach it to SAD and it might work, as those 2 tracks are great but not nearly long enough for me. I may make it a habit of always listening to them together now in fact.

maudlin of the Well: (Limited) CD Reissues in 2012

These are being issued in limited printing (250 I guess) by Finnish label Blood Music, sometime early 2012. As much as I love buying the Vinyls, I do want these on CD as well. Plus BONUS tracks.

Maudlin of the Well - Leaving Your Body Map

Blood Music post on Facebook

Quick note to mention that we just picked up rights to re-release the long out-of-print Bath and Leaving Your Body Map in limited edition CD packages with a few extra never-before-released bonus songs.

Also, the previously never-before-released Part the Second CD.

These will come in limited runs of 250 copies only.

Proceeds from the agreement are going towards funding the final mixing stages of Kayo Dot's new album "Gamma Knife."

maudlin of the Well VINYLS: Bath+LeavingYourBodyMap+SecretSong

10/18/11 3:40PM

http://www.blood-music.com/

Friday October 21st is the Pre-Order.

Okay, that is good to know, and the pre-orders get some extra goodies. The price itself is given in British Pounds 80 and 65, which converts to about $109 and $89 US. Pretty spendy, but this is a very extensive and  a 1-time only thing. I guess after regretting not ordering the failed The Shaming of the True (Kevin Gilbert) vinyl campaign, which was to include some cool extras as well, but not this much, for basically the same price ($100), I probably see this as worth that large figure.

8/5/11 2:11PMcopy+ paste Antithetic Records post

Greetings again everyone. If you're signed up to receive the Kayo Dot newsletter, you're probably here to get an update regarding our upcoming maudlin of the Well box set release. Things have been quiet about this set recently, but trust when I say that its not for lack of progress behind the scenes. We were just waiting for the right time to divulge some more information. The time has come! Here are the details so far, with some secrets revealed, and some still in store for a later date:

-4xLP + 7" Box Set - You read correctly, the set will now be featuring a separate 7" for "The Secret Song"!
-500 sets in total, EVER. This set will not be repressed.
-High resolution scans of ALL of the original artwork have been recovered and will be used to create all new vinyl sized layouts for these albums, meticulously pieced together by Toby Driver (who hasn't seen this art in a VERY long time himself!)
-Digital download card will be included for both albums
-All audio will be remastered for the vinyl format
-These are being done as a split release (as we've stated before) between Antithetic and Blood Music out of Finland. US and CANADA buyers will purchase through the Antithetic store, the rest of the world will purchase from the Blood Music storefront. Please be certain to follow these guidelines! Any international purchase made in the Antithetic store for this item will be refunded.
-Other goodies: This is still a work in progress as we determine what is feasible to include, and how many copies will include what items. Possibilities at the moment are a poster, patch, motW shirt, guitar pick, etc. None of these are set in stone as of yet and will be announced as soon as the final decisions are made.

So as soon as we finalize these last few items and can nail down the price, we will start taking preorders for this item. Please bear in mind that this will likely be $65-70 depending on the final feature set. Since this is such a huge undertaking, we will kindly ask for your patience once your order has been placed! In order to make this a reality, we will need to sell roughly 175 sets through each store (Antithetic and Blood Music). I don't believe this is an unreasonable goal at all, considering the overwhelming response we've received regarding this set so far. We thank you for your patience thus far, and are thrilled to finally be moving this set forward!

More soon.

-Shawn

I don't know why I wouldn't order these, even though I still would go for copies of those albums on compact disc. Unfortunately their debut album My Fruit Psychobells... A Seed Combustible is not included. Perhaps they'll consider it down the road.
