Opeth - Sorceress (2015-2016)

8/1/16 9:30PM

Title track. Not bad overall,..the outro works well and is somewhat heavy. But the growls are gone of course. I would go for Opeth having some guests to growl if Mikael just can't. But I sense it's more that he doesn't want to include them in the writing of the music and vocals in general.

2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, OPETH. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike. Today, OPETH announces their 12th album, »Sorceress«, will be released onSeptember 30th and have unveiled the artwork and track list for their imminent masterpiece.

OPETH’s new album, »Sorceress«, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band’s imprint labelModerbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Ã…kerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener 'Persephone' to 'The Wilde Flowers' and 'Strange Brew' to the album’s counterpart title tracks 'Sorceress' and 'Sorceress II', OPETH’s twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly.

”The new album »Sorceress« is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Ã…kerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”

For »Sorceress«, OPETH returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from Queen, Rush and Judas Priest, where the Swedes had tracked »Pale Communion« in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The band spent 12 days recording at the countryside venue among its serene and inspiring surroundings. The result is nothing short of a powerful and intriguing record that will add yet another layer to the band’s celebrated career.

OPETH will return to Europe this November for a spectacular headline tour.

I'm looking forward to it, but at the same time, not expecting a ton of course, like their last couple of albums.,

Also interesting they sign to Nuclear Blast, Roadrunner wasn't working out? not shocked though.

As for the title, not a Fates Warning reference, but if it somehow was...

details should be bumped of course. Not sure on the release season/year per if it ends up coming out in November.

Warner Music DOWNSIZES Roadrunner Records

link

another link

It seems that when it comes to the rock & metal world, almost all the big stories of 2012 have been sad ones, such as the news of Jim Marshalls passing or the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012. This news however really takes the proverbial biscuit, as the incredibly sad news has reached us this afternoon that Roadrunner Records‘ UK offices are to close in a few weeks time, with cutbacks being reported across the label worldwide. At the time of writing this there have been rumours that the German and Canadian Roadrunner offices are also set to close, and we will confirm or correct this as soon as we can get confirmation one way or the other.

Update – We can confirm that the Canadian offices are also being shut down, and we think all the offices apart from the US office have been scheduled to close down, again further updates when we can confirm this.

Rocksins’ have worked with the team at Roadrunner UK almost from day one of the site starting and they’ve always been nothing but friendly and hugely helpful to us so we would like to send our love and sympathy to the entire team, safe in the knowledge that they are among the very best in the business at what they do so hopefully they’ll all move to success elsewhere.

Needless to say, this is a huge blow for the rock & metal industry across all of Europe. More news on this subject as soon as we get it here at Rocksins.

Second Update – Billboard.biz are reporting that Roadrunner UK will actually continue to exist in some form, as will the Canadian office. The only office to be closed entirely is the Dutch office in the Netherlands. Whether this is accurate or not remains to be seen, as everyone Rocksins’ knows in the UK office has been made redundant, and the head of Roadrunner Canada Rose Slanic earlier tweeted saying today was her last day in the job after seven years. Various members of the US team have also been laid off, but this does not including their digital director Jeremy Rosen (who runs the US Roadrunner twitter account at @rrusa) as we have confirmed with him first hand via twitter that he’s still employed). We’re pleased Jeremy still has a job, we just wish a few of his British colleagues did too. We will of course continue to update this story as new developments become available.

Sucks, but it is the nature of the industry. Warner Music buys them out given how successful RR had become, then they get rid of most of the staff that made them successful to begin with. Yeah, makes PERFECT sense of course.

How this impacts bands like Rush, Dream Theater or even a newer band like Gojira remains to be seen, but I would not be incredibly optimistic if I were them.

Maybe all music, including Metal needs to just be sold via places like Bandcamp. That in theory could be the best solution, however, that isn't going to happen for many years still.

The corporate vampires still hold enough cards.

Update with the track list:

Hey all,

We have finally done it... we made THE album we've been working towards for our entire career. Yes, it did take some time, but works of this magnitude often do. "The Ghost You Gave To Me" is our most epic recording yet. It is a perfect blend of our unique brand of musicality, potent melody and lyrical innovation. We have pushed our own envelope beyond formulaic composition and into a realm where songs have a life of their own... Unpredictable twists and turns, striking imagery and passionate precision combine to make each song a journey in and of itself. This record is alive....
We'll keep you posted as far as the release date, it will be some time this fall. For now, here is the track list....

from the latest Joey Eppard/3 Newsletter (4/5/11)

The mixes are finished, song order established... Still working on the artwork and such but at this point we are looking at a September release... We're really psyched with the record! Album title came down to "React" or "The Ghost you Gave to Me"... after a little research we're going with the latter. As THE most difficult band to search out on the internet we decided that we're better off with an Album title that will actually come up in the search engines!

sounds good. September and the 4th Quarter is looking to be, as it often is, rather busy and deep. Artwork, track list, yep..in the coming weeks/months.

From Three's latest newsletter.

Hey All...

Good News!!!! Four songs are officially mixed for the new "3" record. Everything sounds great and its a pleasure to reunite with Mike Birnbaum and Chris Bittner of Applehead Studio's . This is the team that recorded and produced our first record "Paint By Number" back in 1998 and also produced and recorded Coheed & Cambria's first three albums. We'll be back at it next week to hopefully knock out a couple more mixes. Then its time to finish up the remaining tunes and mix them in march. Good things do take time, and we believe this record will be more than worth the wait...

Meanwhile we'll be making our return to the Bearsville Theater on February 25th. Expect some more sneak peeks at whats to come from the new album... Spread the word!

Also this Saturday will be a musical double feature in Woodstock; at 7:30 a solo set by Joey Eppard at the Varga Gallery followed by a performance of E-G-O at Harmony Cafe starting at 9:30pm.

Sounds like good progress is being made. When it gets done and is released? My guess would be July/August-ish depending how much promotion and other stuff is required. Interesting how they are working with the guy who they worked with on Paint By Number and who worked with Coheed on their 1st 3 records.

Also not to forget, this album, really goes back a few years given the target in 2009 was to release Revisions and not one but possibly 2 other records that year alone. But everything that went down with being dropped by Roadrunner Records, and then being re-signed by Metal Blade Records obviously impacted those not coming out in '09 or even last year I suppose.

Also, I'd love to see them live again supporting it. Hopefully in Minnesota again.
