Not a lot new to say about this song it self which I'll be honest, is okay, but not 1 I ever was attached to necessarily on the 2012 re-release of Vows. Although beyond this information about Brian Jacobs and David Tobias of Apes and Androids co-writing this tune, Greg Kurstin of The Bird and the Bee also worked on a lot of the tunes that the (inferior) 2012 re-release included. Although I have always loved the tune "Sally Can I See You" which Kurstin worked on.

Kimbra @ The Cedar Cultural Center 2/5/18
Well this was my 4th time seeing Kimbra live, 3rd headlining, and while all of the other times she had a full band with drums, last night at The Cedar, it was just her with a bunch synths, a guitarist with another keyboard or 2 and maybe an Electric Drum or 2? and a bassist also with likely more than 1 keyboard.
Kimbra for the 1st time in a long while, played some guitar on a couple select, stripped down tunes (the Prince cover during the Encore and "Past Love" which she said the album version is much different).
But let's get down to brass tax here.
1) I love Kimbra, her music, her personality at least on stage, in interviews, videos she's done, and for the most part on her email list, AMA's and Social Media. But, now seeing her live for a 4th time and trying-to and yet failing again to get to meet her after the show, tell her how much I love her music and maybe ask 1 or 2 questions, in person. Maybe get a photo or something. NO DICE again.
Which basically tells me at of all places, the Cedar Cultural Center, she doesn't come out, at least not initially.
At this point, she is in a lot of ways taking the Ian Anderson approach. Or I suppose Michael Nesmith and Neil Peart.
Seems highly like-able and cool when you're a fan in those platforms, but it doesn't seem she's all that into interacting with her fans outside of that.
I guess I respect that, many celebrities have that identical or similar mentality and approach.
But it just hit me last night, to not ever expect to meet her really.
Steven Wilson for some reason has also come across a little like that as well.
The only thing I would say is, if I didn't need to get home to sleep, so I can leave for work the next day at 6:40AM, I might have tried to wait as long as possible.
And with last night or with the other shows, I did wait, but I suppose maybe not long enough.
But the message I get is, even if I were to wait, there's a reason why she didn't come out nor come out those other times right away, or even within 20 minutes.
She doesn't want to hang out with the fans, at least in that context, at this point.
Kimbra is pretty young, so who knows if she will maintain or increase that approach like Peart or Ian Anderson. I recall James LaBrie was like that in the early days with Dream Theater, and then he opened up.
Or of course, the Michael Nesmith and even Mayer Hawthorne approach now in that she'll do a VIP and/or Meet-and-Greet, which I guess depending on the price (and if it includes SEATING) I might do. But I still wish that wouldn't necessarily be the only way.
But I'm now going to have to come to accept that.

Standing show + me and the wife =/= good.
We even tried to arrive later (knowing the potential standing time could be many hours), but when I played some of 1 of the openers "King" for the wife, she was a bit too curious to skip them.But as it turned out, we probably would have been okay with that. They were nice, but had a bit of a samey style among all their songs. The Smooth synth and vocal harmonies-Neo-Soul with pretty much every song being in the mid-tempo. The wife did appreciate them quoting DeBarge at least. And props to them with a Grammy and playing Super Bowl Live. And that 2 of them were from South Minneapolis originally. I kind of wondered if they may have known Janelle Monae per they are likely close in age and Janelle actually lived in Eagan, MN when she was growing up for a period of time.
But no, like 95% of the shows at The Cedar I have seen were seated. Now as it turned out, there were seats, like when the wife and I saw The Bird and the Bee, but they were way off to the side, and we arrived too late to give up out acquired spots anyway, to even try looking.
But it wasn't great for either of our knees or backs to stand for nearly 3 hours.
We stood for Nesmith at The Troubadour, but it wasn't as long, and it was only him and his band. No down time, nor any opener.
I will add though the other opener Arc Iris I kind of liked, and may be checking out their music soon.
3) With Kimbra's setup, and playing 9 songs from Primal Heart, some of course having never heard, and then the other 2 new ones Sweet Relief and Hi Def Distant Romance, it was a night of new and unfamiliar music, which overall I still liked but for the wife, didn't even go as far.
And it was highly electronic. A lot of keys and textures. The videos behind her did help at least.
Even the arrangements of Settle Down and Two Way Street threw me and the wife off a bit, although I still enjoyed them. I do wish she would still include the VOCAL CHANTING SOLO in TWO WAY STREET, per it is the greatest moment of that tune. Even in another arrangement or on a keyboard or guitar or something. But last night? I don't think she did it.
As a big positive though, Black Sky sounded really good; better than the videos I checked out of it a few months back.
And then Everybody Knows. Holy shit, this song is fan-fucking-tastic!
I re-listened to it again yesterday at work, and it hit me how well arranged and melodic it is. Definitely the biggest winner on Primal Heart among the songs I've heard, which including the live ones last night, is most of it.
of course Hi Def Distant Romance is 1 of many new songs that won't be on Primal Heart, that Kimbra said in an email, will be coming leading-up to Primal Heart's release (and maybe throughout 2018?, I forget). I.e. she has a lot of music she's made that won't be on the album beyond HDDR.
St.Vincent at The Walker in 2012 and Imogen Heap: That is kind of what she was doing in a lot of ways with the keys and stripped down ensemble. I wonder if part of that is cost to pay musicians to tour?
The new album titled "Primal Heart" she talked about being inspired by a trip to Ethiopia I recall and seeing the primal? way they live. Which I was thinking the new album would be more stripped down and have more acoustic instruments and DRUMS. Like lots of them.
I am now thinking this album is taking the electronic side to some songs from Golden Echo, and making an album with even more of it. I mean she even worked with Skrillex on Top of the World.
The thing though I am keeping in mind is in that AMA she did on Reddit, I think she mentioned how this new album will not necessarily be the way she records down the road.
But the chances of a Vows part 2 ever happening seem unlikely, which I get. Artists don't want to repeat themselves, etc. But I guess it is the whole self-ish artist to experiment and try new things constantly, which I applaud her, but I can't be sure if I will ever love as much as her earlier work as-a-whole.
I did say in my 2011 Albums of the Year that i don't know if she ever will be able to top Vows, but that was more of just HOW GOOD it was.
That all being said, it was a fun show, very energetic, highly electronic/ with HEAVY synths. And pretty good consistent energy. And the crowd loved her for the most part. It was almost sold out, which I kind of wonder if The Cedar might be too small for her at this point. Unsure she'd play like The Palace Theatre or Skyway or something if she headlines again, but we'll see.
The Prince tribute was nice, a little predictable, but still very much appreciated. And cool to hear a deeper track like "Call My Name."
I do know I will not plan to stand for long lengths, especially with the wife, and not expect to try and meet her again. I.e. no waiting around afterwards, which is probably for the best anyway.

Kimbra - 90's Music on David Letterman 11/7/14
Saw her last week in Minneapolis, some of the new tracks are better live. Her band is pretty boss. I agree with some of the comments on there in that 'Miracle" or even "Nobody But You" probably would have been more accessible, but then again, I felt the same way about "Cameo Lover" as a lead single instead of "Settle Down."
But I applaud her in these situations in not compromising. Some of the other comments say if you don't get or care for this song, than you may not as well get or care for her, even though there may be other songs you may like if you heard them.
She's directing her music to more open-minded/liberal-minded listeners in some ways I suppose.
i.e. if you don't like it, she doesn't need you, lol..in a matter of speaking.
But yeah, her band is badass.
I also could add, I ran into Josh Rheault formerly of The Receiving End of Sirens and The Dear Hunter and now the great jangly Power-Pop band Mercies (and Mercies have a new album coming in January from what he told me). Josh does tech/stage work for Kimbra, at least on this tour. I wonder if Josh has had the chance to share any of his music with her (beyond TDH, which she knows). She probably would like Mercies anyway.

Kimbra - Come Into My Head (Official Video)
slick looking, she's a patient at a psychiatric ward of some kind. Not bad, although admittedly, if she's going to do videos for the new songs, "Sally I Can See You" would make the most sense to me.
Perhaps something to mention if I get the chance to chat with her next month at the show in Minneapolis.

Kimbra interview: Writing/Ben Wienman (TDEP) collaboration?
good interview with some information about her upcoming plans. She is going to be writing (and maybe demoing?) some new music soon in Montreal, Ca of all places with producer Damian Taylor, who also remixed "Two Way Street" which can be streamed here.
She mentions some possible collaborations, which among them, Ben Wienman of The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Kimbra talks about US version of Vows?..a little

that post on Facebook mentioning the new songs on the US version of Vows, as this video shows, are only vaguely and briefly mentioned at the beginning. And I think most importantly, there is no explanation for the reason behind the such dramatic track list difference.
Maybe I haven't posted it yet in here, but I should now. The 2012 American release of Vows I'm pretty certain is inferior to the 2011 original Australian/New Zealand release. Primarily for 2 reasons.
1) the track list difference. Not so much due to the new songs being poor, as they are not really. But not including many tracks that made the 2011 original release work. And THE FLOW does not work for the new version as well, as a result. "Withdraw" "Wandering Limbs" "Call Me" "Limbo" and even the ending hidden track "Somebody Please" are a big reason why that version is great.
2) the mix is a bit too hot, not only on the new songs, but the original tracks sound slightly more compressed.
I will say, the live "Plain Gold Ring" on the US version is an improvement, but not enough.
Now, I'm making no mistake, both versions of Vows are great, and the US version is still not a bad record. And I am glad there are a number of new tracks, especially "Sally I Can See You," do add some to this re-release. But I wish she had just released this version with the original track listing and MIXES, and then just included many if not all of the new songs as Bonus Tracks or on a 2nd CD.
But I do wonder if the record label pushed her into how the US version came out. It would be nice to have someone ask more specifically about that in DETAIL. But this video piece, while nice, does not really.

Kimbra - Settle Down on Jimmy Kimmel Live
Jeez, I had NO CLUE she was appearing on there, although it makes sense given Vows dropped this week in the States and her Foster the People support tour begins soon (or already has?).
This kind of exposure may finally open the flood gates. Her last.fm listeners are at 66,000 right now, let's see where they are in a couple of weeks.
also this video I saw like a month or more ago, and never got around to sharing. It's her from 2002 (10 years ago). Amazing, you could tell already then how into analyzing song structure and arrangements she was.

"Something in the Way You Are" I don't believe is a cover of The Reign of Kindo tune "Something in the Way That You Are" but if it was, I'd be awfully curious about it.
The new tracks she's been playing live "Come Into My Head" is there, but "Samaritan" is not there. Maybe she never got around to recording it? I dunno, but it's a good tune, and I hope it eventually comes out on another release.

Kimbra - The Build Up Video/Vows out May 22nd

We are excited to announce that Vows will be released on May 22, 2012 and features several brand new songs in addition to tracks from the platinum- certified Australian edition of the album. New Kimbra interview
The US release of Vows it sounds like will drop this Summer in the US. With some extra tracks/a different track listing. Some include The Mars Volta's drummer Deanoni Parks in fact.
The article mentions her opening for Foster the People this Summer. The date of course in Minneapolis (I'm assuming it's the only date) is on June 22nd, when I'll be in Chicago, lol.
Murphy's Fucking Law. O well, paying the outrageous Target Center price for tickets would seem a bit of waste since I couldn't give two shits about Foster the People, especially paying $50 or even $100 or more just to see Kimbra play for 30 minutes.
Still, murphy's law, like The Dear Hunter show the day after in St Paul which I will miss. Marillion is a priority, as the last time I saw them, I'd never heard of Kimbra nor The Dear Hunter.

That haunting cameo appearance in Gotye’s multi-platinum smash hit Somebody That I Used To Know has got to be the best career move Kimbra ever made for herself. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter has just been invited to tour the US in support of the man of the moment himself, Gotye.
The nationwide run kicks off in late March and will see the pair embark on a 14-show stint through the States, not too long after their highly coveted slot on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show goes to air.
Kimbra is also locked in to perform at the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, TX prior to the spring tour.
Originally from New Zealand, Kimbra Johnson has been spinning her jazz-inflected pop magic since the age of 14. She first made her mark on the Australian scene with debut album Vows, which spawned three hit singles, platinum status and won an ARIA Award for Best Female Artist.
But it was her arresting vocals on the chart-topping Gotye track that has propelled her onto the international stage. The video clip forSomebody That I Used To Know currently enjoys over 54 million views and is climbing the US radio charts at enviable speed.

First Ave should try and move this show to THEIR MAIN ROOM now, even more so. I know there's another show on April 4th, an arttist named Lucero. But perhaps they could have an ALL-AGES SHOW start around 5PM and have enough time to still get the Lucero show in. There's MORE THAN ENOUGH DEMAND for the tickets. If by some miracle it happens, those douche-scalpers better not pull off this same bogarting shit again.

Kimbra - Cameo Lover ([Disco-like] Remix)/Article
I just noticed Kimbra post a link to this article on twitter which includes this "Cameo Lover" remix by someone named Shook. It's kind of odd remix, in that it makes the song sound like a disco tune. I'm not sure if it's good or bad really.
Also the article is from "New Philadelphia" which makes me curious if that's a city/area of NZ or Australia. But what it talks about, her song "Good Intent" showing up on the popular-yet-long-since-jumping-the-shark Drama series Grey's Anatomy. And the curiosity about how the American music industry will appreciate her and her album Vows when it gets released in the States this year.
I just wish these people would stop comparing her to Florence and the Machine. She sounds really nothing like them. But I suppose it's just the token easy comparison because they have nothing else as well known to compare her to. Except Imogen Heap or Janelle Monáe ?..but of course it doesn't happen.

I've been wanting to write something about her, pretty much when I started listening and then sharing the video for Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" a couple of weeks ago. And I finally got to hear this debut LP from her this week and am still digesting much of it. But if I manage to add to this entry at some point, I'm just going to give some initial thoughts.
Kimbra (or Kimbra Johnson) is a new, young singer/songwriter from New Zealand (edit: I guess I assumed she was from Australia. Then again, Gotye is originally from Belgium, lol..so nationalities can easily be mistaken).. And there's been much anticipation for this debut album of hers I guess, for even many years. I suppose in many ways, she does remind me of among others, 2010's great discovery artist in Janelle Monáe. But also the style of her music on this album does share things in common with Ms. Monáe. The genre blending, passion, and soulfulness in her vocals especially. The depth and flow of this record. And maybe most of all, she doesn't really come across as another pop-diva (which is what I initially pegged Janelle as). A few other names that I'll admit I'm reminded of that come to mind might be Imogen Heap or St.Vincent in a way as well. Heap perhaps in the use of textures.
Specific songs? I don't skip any track at this point, but perhaps the last 3 tracks "Wandering Limbs" "Withdraw" and "The Build Up/Somebody Please" have stood out the most. "Wandering Limbs" features a male singer named Sam Lawrence, who'll I can't deny, I thought was Daniel Johns from Silverchair/Dissociatives. I suppose like Kimbra in the Gotye song, maybe I should inquire about his music as well.
But this is definitely an album I anticipate listening to a fair amount over the next few weeks or more, as I keep enjoying more things about it. Very much of an album-lover's album, like The Archandroid and some others. And while I am still enjoying Gotye's new record Making Mirrors, I guess I can already say right now, this is at least a bit better. Although I'd be surprised if I'll find any 1 song as good as "Somebody I Used to Know."
