Capital Cities - Solarize (2017-2018)

8/10/18
Nice cover art. This seems to be a mix of the recent singles which are all great, and the Swimming Pool Summer EP which I also like a lot of. And it looks like 5 new tracks.

Epic record, unsure though if this will be the standard or most thought-of version. And I ain't touching the entry on rateyourmusic per I would think the plan is to release this in some physical formats (maybe some info/sites show it, but I haven't seen it yet). Vinyl, cd, etc.

FB

Our new song "Space" is out now and our new album "Solarize" drops Friday August 10th.

It seems these 6 tracks will be included:

Vowels
My Name is Mars
Venus and River
Just Say When (I always think of the Fair to Midland track when seeing this title)
Levitate
Space

Will any of the tracks from the Swimming Pool Summer EP be on Solarize? unlikely.

I do find it odd that it comes out next Friday, and yet there's no cover art or an official track list yet. Or even press releases or blogs with reviews, etc. I suppose in some ways I am glad as I am pretty sick and tired of so many of these other sites getting "early reviews" access for really no justified reason over even this blog of mine.

Also the fact 5 or 6 of the tracks are already available in some ways sucks since not that many of the tracks will be new. On the other hand, every track they've released recently is excellent. "Venus and River" maybe being my favorite.

Also no Spencer Ludwig I'll presume, which is unfortunate, but I'm sure it's for the best. There still is trumpet though which matters.

Anyway, I'll have to bump+edit this entry of course when that stuff shows up of course (maybe this weekend).

Capital Cities - Venus & River [1B] (2018)

Great new banging tune!

Capital Cities are pretty consistent. Catchy, melodic, memorable. The use of horns or horn textures always seem to work with their music.

When their next full-length is coming? I dunno. But they keep making great singles that I wonder if it's not too far away.

The Swimming Pool Summer EP from 2017 was rather good, and the singles "Vowels" and "My Name is Mars" also carried the same melodic, catchy, upbeat vibe.

I keep thinking about River Phoenix and his movies when hearing this. I love how they use 80's references in their songs, or just have an 80's vibe at times.

Capital Cities - My Name is Mars [1B]

Pretty nice tune and lyric video.

No trumpet and no Spencer Ludwig though, but that seems to be the case with many of their new tunes.

on a side note, I've been having quite the difficult evening with my and wife's dog Coco having to go into emergency surgery (and the cost of course being through the roof), but I can now say the surgery went okay and she should make a full recovery. So this new track does help ease my mood and stress (sadness), so no matter how much I love this tune, maybe it'll hold that amount of huge SENTIMENTAL VALUE to me now.

Love Little Puppy! Long Live Little Puppy Coco!!!!!!!!

Capital Cities - Vowels [1B] (2016)

Nice synthy new track from Capital Cities.

I can't help but think of the Muzzy El, Grande Vowels video which I saw in High School but in SPANISH class, and the version was en Espanol. That specific Spanish version I'm failing to find but the English one is similar enough.

Hopefully their next full-length is coming soon as well.

The Aston Shuffle - Never Take It Away feat. Mayer Hawthorne [Single] (2014)

Great uplifting tune! Never heard of this group The Aston Shuffle, but this song is niice

I wonder if it was this, that Mayer was in the studio working on like a month ago? perhaps, although it doesn't change the fact he has a lot of music that was written and recorded I recall, that hasn't been released yet.

But as for The Aston Shuffle, maybe I need to hear more from them? Maybe they'll be 2014's synthy/dancey breakthrough group like Capital Cities was in 2013?

From the forthcoming album "Photographs", out March 28th.
Pre-order now and receive this and 3 other tracks pre-release.

Capital Cities - "Breathe" (Pink Floyd cover ft. Tupac Shakur)

This is actually pretty sweet. I know there are many who may enjoy Capital Cities that are Pink Floyd fans who probably would cringe at hearing Tupac on the same remix/mashup/cover but whatevah.

Capital Cities are a great new group, and this interpretation is nice, and I can't even claim to be a fan of Tupac really (although I don't hate him, I barely know his music; I know him more from some of the movies he was in actually).

Capital Cities @ Myth Maplewood, MN 11/21/13 / In a Tidal Wave of Mystery (2013)

I meant to, and should share what I tried to post on Facebook earlier today about this band.

I probably saw one of if not the most jaw-dropping, yet still unknown band to me, last night in electronic/trumpet infused LA ensemble Capital Cities who played at Myth somewhat out-staging I'd say Fitz & The Tantrums . I was so impressed, I purchased Capital Cities debut record "In a Tidal Wave of Mystery" on cd (for myself) and on vinyl for my gf .

In looking at some of their background online, I was pleasantly surprised to learn Sebu Simonian is 1 of the main contributors. Sebu, I know from his being a member of the great mid-2000's melodic pop/rock group Aviatic, who I haven't really thought about in many years. But given he was with Aviatic, I'm not so surprised to see him in another highly talented and engaging band.

Fans of Chromeo namely, would probably enjoy them. They even did a very cool synthy version of the Bee Gees "Staying Alive" and then going into an outro of all people, Weezer? "If You Want to Destroy My Sweater" LOL. It was hilarious.

They really did blow me and my girlfriend away. Even if I found they kind of came across as partially like a Chromeo with a New Orleans-jazz flare with the trumpet. I can't help of even think a bit about Mutemath and namely some of the jazzy stuff with the trumpet on their 2nd LP Armistice (namely the remixed/extended jazzy version).

But when it came down to it, they had great energy, played to the crowd well, the visuals with sunglasses and lights. I even grew to enjoy some of the pre-recorded/tracked synthesizer rhythms.

So, I have now listened to their debut LP In a Tidal Wave of Mystery once, and it's pretty good. The songs vary enough to have me wanting to go back to them. The smooth and moody nature still works. Maybe not quite as well on an energy level, but at least from a songwriting level.

Tracks like "Farrah Fawcett Hair," "Love Away," "I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo," "Chatreuse," and "Kangaroo Court" stand out all in different ways. From samples, to pop culture references, to dance-able sections. This record features a lot of different elements to enjoy.Even the opening track "Safe and Sound" I'll admit to liking, even if it sounds somewhat mall-pop like, with it being mostly synth and gang-vocal centric.

I would say this band is almost like 1-part Chomeo, 1-part Daft Punk, 1-part Mutemath, 1-part Apes and Androids, 1-part Fitz and the Tantrums, 1-part Mayer Hawthorne even, and a bunch of parts which they kind of have of their own. I suppose that is 1 reason why I am intrigued not only enjoying this album more, but where they may go next sound-wise. I mean if you cover the Bee Gees and Weezer within the same cover/synthy interpretation, that does show you bring in a lot of different influences.

I must say, their trumpet player, Spencer Ludwig stood out a ton at the show. He was very charismatic. His parts do shine a lot on here, but he's maybe not included on as much of this record as I'd prefer. But perhaps he may be more so in what they do next.

But for now, these guys are another new band that I'm really enjoying, both this album and of course seeing live. I only would wonder if/when they come back, will they have the big visual setup, and sound dynamics, depending on the venue. I.e. if they played at the Triple Rock or Entry, it may not be quite as *big* sounding/seeming as it was at Myth last night. Oddly, 1 of the best shows I've seen there, especially not being a huge fan of that place.
