The long-awaited sixth album is about to be reality in a matter of months. The previous album, No More Stories, was released in August 2009 and before that the gaps between albums have always been 2-4 years. The next yet-untitled album was originally rumoured to come out sooner, but we know now that this approximately four-and-a-half-year gap will, in fact, be the longest for Mew.

So far. Pre-production phase is coming to its end and recording will begin in Copenhagen next month. This will be the first time that Mew are going in and out of the studio and playing live shows in-between (in June and August). For this album Mew will be collaborating with many talented people, but Michael Beinhorn is the main producer. The aforementioned producer was the guy behind And the Glass Handed Kites which many consider to be Mew’s best-sounding album. It is mixed very low, as we know, and playing it in a night club forces the DJ to go easy on the bass level. Whether this album will contain big rock anthems or not, we’ll just have to wait to see. Previously Beinhorn has also produced albums for Aerosmith, Marilyn Manson, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Korn among many many others.

A something we have up the sleeve
For you
Now growing bigger and faster
And too big to handle
Not just a sleeve thing anymore
We will care for it but it can live with you now

All though still work in progress, the song which holds the working title Klassen (The Class) - was the show stopper many nights at this summers festivals. You can now watch a TV recording of Klassen live from this years Roskilde Festival exclusively at our Mewsite.com - See you there!

Post on Facebook from Friday October 5th

hey all you over the worlds we are now ready to meet you at mewsite.com with news on the new mew all participants in the film are made of music B

If you sign up to their mailing list, there's 5+ minute video showing Mew in Sicily this past Summer writing (and possible recording?) new music. Although, the music in the video is mostly acoustic, which I'm a little torn about. On one hand it's Mew, so the odds of it being distinct, melodic, dreamy, surreal, etc are high no matter. But if it is all-acoustic, it may be a change in sound still.

Maybe they've been listening to a lot of folky acoustic stuff of late? Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel or something? All just guessing, but given it doesn't seem it'll come by the end of 2012, its release year seems more likely 2013 now.

Toria

I discovered this Latvian group a few years ago. They're 1 of the more interesting heavy Post Rock groups I ever came across. Maybe what stood most from memory, from that 3-song demo was how they used SAMPLES. Only a few other "Post" bands have used them well, or even used them at all in fact.

But I also recall just the MOOD and dynamics, which is common in "post" bands, but they seemed to do it better than most of the other groups, especially recently.

But like many bands as obscure as they are, I wondered what they were up to like a year later, and came to understand they had ended/broken up.

But I got a message on facebook the other day from them linking to their Bandcamp with these 2 new tunes that came out earlier this year. The 1st one, "Snow Crystals" is more textured, "Re:Toria" is more riffy.

Good to see they are still making music and they posted most recently on FB:

August 26th is a fixed date for us to get back in studio and to finish our debut album. Can't wait! What about You, pals?

Lol. I guess when google likes your blog, this stuff happens. This is maybe 4th or 5th occasion in the last couple of years that I notice the traffic going through the roof (I recall The Mars Volta topic was another such posting that found for many days, 4-digits), and I scratch my head why. People are looking for download links to albums? yeah, probably the majority of them are. But otherwise, there's still a lot more traffic than this place probably deserves.

And maybe the worst part about seeing those numbers, is I haven't actually been able to do much actual writing. Let alone my music-listening sabbatical, which I feel pretty down about day-in and day-out. It's a priorities thing. I want to keep my job, and learn my new job. And all this music that I have had no time to listen to is taking a back seat. And maybe the worst part is, I'm unclear when this sabbatical of sorts will end. At least at work. But I guess maybe my perspective is at least changing, if not improving.

Music to many is trivial entertainment. To myself, up until the last few years, and especially the last few months, it seemed like a much more important thing. But paying my bills and doing something new and different I guess has lent myself to understanding there are more things to hold important besides how many bands and albums I can find every year. And even being a pro-bono amateur reporter of sorts for a niche music fanbase (or at least pretending to be one. I'm sure plenty of people just enjoy laughing at how obsessed I can come across to be about posting/updating/announcing stuff about bands only 25 people on the internet care about).

Kimbra - They Don't Care About Us (MJ cover live at Rock in Rio)

This is pretty sweet, arranging and dressing the part like the Michael Jackson song's original tradition.

Timmy Sean and the Celebrities - East Coast Girls [EP] (2013)

Given more or less everything this guy does seems to do, ends up being quite good with his last solo record, Sir Video and some of his other projects like Luzer and the Mahoney Brothers, I'm pretty excited to hear this (when/how much sadly, is an entirely different story).

Songs From and Inspired by Noisewater from 2010 is/was an awesome layered/orchestral power pop record. Anything in that same vein (or better) should be welcome to my and many others ears.

Coming on September 24th.

and at least before this gets reported/pulled:

Grammy.com? lol, I guess getting a nomination allows one to be an Alum for stuff like streaming new songs on their website.

As far as the song itself, it's pretty good. Not incredible, but nice. I like the 80's Kevin(Giraffe)/Keith Emerson keyboard texture Jordan uses towards the back end. It's a bit of a ballad, but one with a little more to it I guess compared to many Dream Theater ballads.

LaBrie and Petrucci give a synopsis of each track:

Slightly OT:

I also just thought of something this evening about Self-Titled albums, that may seem a little over-thinking, but. eh, what the fuck.

Hypothetically, if I were to release a Self-Titled album of some kind, while being in a band (or solo artist for that matter) like Dream Theater, with a pretty sizable catalog from the past.

I might include either a short clip or reference to many if not each album in the discography. Or maybe better, at least try and write a song/songs that in some way, if not totally, are like songs from many if not each of the past records.

Because in 1 way, that would sort of fit the "Self Titled" idea (or as a concept?), as like a micro-cosm of the history of the band's/artist's music.

I wonder if it's been done before. It would hardly be surprising.

8/5/13 12:00PM

I haven't heard it yet, but for those who can stream, here's the new/1st single "The Enemy Inside"..most of the comments are saying it's good but similar to a lot of the stuff from Black Clouds and Systematic Chaos. And there's a very Megadeth-like riff in it.

Also it was pointed out many times how on the last few records, the 1st single and the 1 that is more directed towards the Metal side, ended up being among if not the worst songs on the records, so how good or bad this song is probably doesn't mean a whole lot at this point.

7/18/13 4:25PM

Preview Part 2 (see Parts 1 and 3 below), and some Indonesian Entertainment TV show did a story on them, although I didn't check, but unless there's an accurate subtitling available, I can't understand nearly everything outside of the band's name and "progressive metal" that they say.

7/10/13 6:05PM-7/11/13 5:50AM

Here's "In the Studio Part 3." Part 2? hopefully I'll track that 1 down later. Sounds more or less par for the course from JP's comments. But then again, this is their Self-Titled album anyway.

Roadrunner Records Link

I'm not really caring a ton about the cover art. The track list as well, although the song titles are sort of prog-metal predictable, sadly. "Sleep Paralysis" I'd love to believe was influenced by dredg (El Cielo), but I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with it.

More comments in due time hopefully.

DREAM THEATER UNVEILS MILESTONE NEW ALBUM;
GRAMMY®-NOMINATED ROCK ICONS TO RELEASE
FIRST-EVER SELF-TITLED COLLECTION;
WORLD TOUR TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON;
“DREAM THEATER” ARRIVES ON SEPTEMBER 24TH

Roadrunner Records has announced the eagerly anticipated new album from the legendary Dream Theater. “DREAM THEATER” – the first self-titled collection in the GRAMMY®-nominated band’s nearly three decade career – arrives at last on September 24th.

“DREAM THEATER” was recorded at Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove, New York, with founding guitarist John Petrucci producing and studio luminary Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush) engineering and mixing. The album marks a brilliant new chapter for the always adventurous band, their first to have been written and recorded with drummer Mike Mangini wholly integrated into the creative process from the start.

“I see every new album as an opportunity to start over,” says Petrucci. “To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We’re incredibly excited about ‘DREAM THEATER’ and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”

“DREAM THEATER” will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180 Gram Vinyl Double LP, and a Limited Edition Box Set. Pre-orders are scheduled to get underway sometime in July at the Roadrunner Records Webstore.

“DREAM THEATER” follows 2011’s acclaimed “A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS.” That album – highlighted by “On The Backs Of Angels,” which earned the iconic band its first ever GRAMMY® Award nomination (in the “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” category) – proved one of Dream Theater’s most successful, making top 10 chart debuts in 14 countries, including our own Billboard 200. “A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS” was hailed for its ambition, complexity, and sheer melodic power, with Japan’s influential BURRN! naming it as the year’s “Best Album.”

Furthermore, the special edition CD/DVD set of “A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS” included “The Spirit Carries On” – a 60-minute movie documenting Dream Theater’s drummer auditions, which resulted in the addition of the gifted Mangini. The challenge spurred Dream Theater to extraordinary artistic heights on “A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS” and the epic world tour that followed. Long known as one of hard rock’s most powerful live acts, the recalibrated band hit the road hard in celebration of the acclaimed album, a 15-month trek which saw sold out headline shows in 35 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, Central America, and South America.

With total sales exceeding 10 million albums and DVDs worldwide, Dream Theater have long stood among the upper echelon of hard rock giants. Albums such as 1992’s RIAA gold-certified classic “IMAGES & WORDS” (featuring the breakthrough top 10 single, “Pull Me Under”) have earned the Long Island-based band countless accolades for their visionary synthesis of melodic power and virtuosic experimentation, including being named as one of Rolling Stone’s top 10 “Best Prog Rock Bands of All time.”

Since uniting with Roadrunner in 2007, Dream Theater has unleashed a series of remarkable albums, each work revealing stunning new musical facets and creative avenues. 2009’s “BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS” proved a milestone, debuting at #6 on the Billboard 200 – the band’s highest album chart debut to date.

Dream Theater will tour in support of “DREAM THEATER” – full details will be announced soon. For up-to-the-minute news and information, please visitwww.dreamtheater.net/tourdates.

Dream Theater is: John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), James LaBrie (vocals), Jordan Rudess (keyboards and continuum) and Mike Mangini (drums).

1st source I've seen
http://www.rocking.gr/news/Titlos-kai-imerominia-kukloforias-gia-to-neo-album-twn-Dream-Theater/16408/

roughly translated I guess:

"Dream Theater" was recorded at Cove City Studios in New York, produced by the guitarist and founding member of the group John Petrucci, and engineered by the famous Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush). Τhis album marks a new chapter in the band's history, since it is the first where drummer Mike Mangini was involved completely and from the beginning in the creative process.

«I see each album as an opportunity for a new beginning» says Petrucci. «Building or improving in a direction that has evolved over time, or enter in completely new territory. This is the first self-titled album of our career and i can't think of something that states a musical and creative identity in a better way than this. We have completely explored all those elements that makes us unique, like the intensity and the cinematic atmosphere. We are excited with “Dream Theater” and can't wait for everyone to hear it.»

"Dream Theater" will be available in many different editions, including a regular and special 2CD edition, 180gram double vinyl and a limited box set. Preorders will start in the next month via the  Webstore of Roadrunner Records.

September 24th, Road Runner Records. They are also releasing a new live record in November I guess, which for some reason releasing a new live album after a new studio album, knowing none of the music from the new studio will be inlcuded on the live album seems weird.

And of course the band did no demo-ing or even testing of this music live, which is status quo I suppose, but I've felt for over a decade, is at least part of the reason their albums have come out at the quality they have.

But so be it, I am still rather curious.

When more info comes, it'll be edited in (maybe later today even).

Put Down the Muffin - New Album (1st in 8 years)

9/13/13 7:25PM
1st song "Ten Pin" which is pretty sweet. Diggin the keyboard lead.

As far as the Kickstarter, they need a little under $2600, in just under 3 weeks. It seems doable, as long as they keep sharing the link/info.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pdtm/help-fund-a-new-put-down-the-muffin-album

1st album in 8 years. Not enough time to go in-depth, but PDtM were/are a great Minnesota-based instrumental I recall? jazz-fusion/prog band. They've sort of been on a hiatus for many years, but never really broke up officially.

I never saw them live, but meant to, namely in 2007 or 2008 the same evening I saw Dean Magraw's great band 8-Head play a reunion show at The Cedar Cultural Center. The 8-Head show was so good, I couldn't bring myself to leave during the set break to go see PDtM.

But maybe with this new album, a show or 2 will happen as well (maybe at The Artist Quarter?), and I will finally get to see them unlike that show conflict many years ago.

Also it might be worth adding, great Minnesota prog bands Between Two Skies and Bubblemath might take note of this campaign and it may serve as motivation to finally release their long-awaited next records. One can think/hope.

OT: Minnesota Blogger Conference Sat 10/12 Concordia University

9/12/13 9:17AM
Go Here

if interested/curious, for the 1st round of Free Tickets as I just did.

8/15/13 11:52AM
http://mnbloggerconference.com/2013/08/15/2013-minnesota-blogger-conference-to-be-held-oct-12-at-concordia-university/

I probably will go as I am at least a bit curious about these sort of things. I guess I can come up with a list of 5-10 best questions I wish to raise, namely about how the music media in Minnesota and music listeners/fans have basically never cited/mentioned/referred to my blog, which baffles me. But perhaps it won't baffle me so much after checking this thing out.

Also just from a schedule standpoint, this is happening the day after the Between the Buried and Me/The Faceless show at The Varsity Theater.

The specific time of it I don't see anywhere there, but I would guess it'll be a late morning/early afternoon thing.

edit:

Could "dops to" be referred to other blog/sites? I guess from the standpoint of *being first* and talking about a band or news story rumor, perhaps not directly.

But what I'm unclear about is not so much if other places are talking about stuff I did before them, but why aren't they even talking about some of the stuff I do at all. I suppose both.

But at least indirectly, like 3rd or 4th degree, I could have a claim of dops to for bands like Warpaint and Local Natives (and even Gotye and Kimbra in Minnesota at least). But as I've said, even if there were more obvious proof, those local music media sources would never cite me anyway, which in my mind would be "dops to" at least.

Fates Warning - Darkness in a Different Light (2013)

9/11/13 12:00PM

"I Am." No idea wtf happened to that Firefly link below, but I just re-embedded it.

8/20/13 11:38AM

Firefly.

the track from the podcast was "Into the Black" by the way (I didn't listen long enough to hear it mentioned).

quote link

Vocalist Ray Alder tells Classic Rock: “Firefly is very personal to me in more ways than one.

“After I’d written the melody I knew immediately what the title was going to be, as well as the subject. I’m pretty sure we’ve all felt this way at one time or another: that sometimes things just don’t work out the way you think they would, but that’s okay, it’s part of life, and we move on.

“Ironically, I was outside the studio one night while recording it, and there they were – fireflies floating through the trees in the forest. I hadn’t seen a single firefly for at least 15 years so I took it as a sign. A sign of what, I don’t know; but very ironic nonetheless…”

 8/17/13 12:24PM
Go to 26 minutes and 30 seconds of this podcast to hear a new song "Into the Black"

I did last check it out last and thought it was good, but not like it blew me away or anything.

I noticed also at least 1 review, which is fine they sent out promos, but I always wonder how they decide that kind of stuff. Likely the reviewers and podcasts like that one are totally in bed with Insideout (posting/.playing ads and whatnot). In other words, something I don't love the idea doing, but still wouldn't mind being approached about anyway (I have always felt ads are a nuisance and something that would detract me as a reader, thus why I never have, but could have put them up).

Anyway, hopefully more streams, videos and whatnot will come soon enough.

8/13/13 4:50PM

I want to retire from Preorders (mainly because they never seem to arrive on-time, let alone early, lol), however, I'm a bigger fan of this band, than most. Plus, $11 is well, only $11 I guess.

FATES WARNING – Reveal new album title, artwork and release date; Announce tourdates!

U.S. Progressive Metal pioneers FATES WARNING have finally returned with their first studio album release in about a decade! Entitled “Darkness In A Different Light”, the album will be released on September 30th, 2013 in Europe and October 1st, 2013 in North America via InsideOutMusic.

“Darkness In A Different Light” is FATES WARNING’s first album of new material since the release of “FWX” in 2004 and also marks the first release for the band’s stellar current line-up of Ray Alder (vocals), Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti (guitars), Joey Vera (bass) and Bobby Jarzombek (drums).

The album was produced by Matheos and mixed by long time FATES WARNING engineer Phil Magnotti, while mastering was handled by Maor Appelbaum at Maor Appelbaum Mastering, California.
The (above pictured) artwork for the album was designed by Conte di San Pietro.

FATES WARNING vocalist Ray Alder checked in with a comment as follows:

"Darkness in a Different Light" is the result of almost two years of very hard work from everyone in the band.
I believe that this line-up is the best that Fates has ever had, and I also think that it comes through in the music on this album. It's been almost nine years since our last studio album and I couldn't be more proud of what we've accomplished here.
We are looking very much forward to playing some new songs for our fans who have stuck by us over all these years. We plan on touring as much as possible for "Darkness in a Different Light" and hopefully we'll hit a few places we've never been...

Indeed, FATES WARNING already have headlining touring runs confirmed for October in Europe and November/December in North America, with further live activity to follow in 2014.
See http://fateswarning.com/ for the complete list of tour dates.

Fanboy-excitement of course. I've said it many times, but I'd love for them to bring back Terry Brown to work with Ray Alder on his vocal lines, but that seems pretty unlikely anytime soon with anything Ray or Jim Matheos related.

But, 1 more of the 5 2013 Blue Chip albums is now happening (The Reign of Kindo already did of course).  The 1st FW LP since FWX. For some reason, I wonder if this record will sound much if anything like FWX; mainly because the stuff Jim has done since (and Ray for that matter), hasn't been so much like FWX.

Track list, samples, streams, etc all I imagine will be coming in the coming days/weeks. Also a bit ironic how it drops the same week as the new Dream Theater album.

Also I think I posted some stuff about the tour dates they are doing this fall, but the link above, Google or a search in here should provide that.

(it's all we have anymore!)  There are a couple of cool items that are unique to this pre order.  A circular poster, flask, bath robe, and some tee designs that will only be printed here.  Check em out if you care.
Lastly, and possibly most important.  We have an exclusive stream of the first song off our new album over at Metal Sucks.  It's called Clarity - and we truly hope you spin it a bunch and like it.  (not in the FB sense of the phrase.  we just hope you dig it).
You can, and will, or wont, LISTEN TO IT HERE
As you may find out, we have finally broken the streak of having 10 songs on an album.  This album also runs a little longer than anything in the past.  This is either good news, or the worst news one can hear.  So from all of us at pth, it's either "you're welcome" or "sorry".
We still have more in the works, so stay tuned for more updates....and pupdates, if you're patient.

I'll listen and I recall supporting their Indiegogo, but I guess this is kind of a make or break for them for me. I really only find Kezia the only record that I care to listen to now. Fortress has some good tracks on it, and Scurrilous as well, but neither was really close to as good as that debut record of theirs.
I'd love to hear a comeback album though, but if they don't bring back the acoustic sections (like on Kezia) and involve Jadea more (like on Kezia), I'm skeptical. But who knows. Perhaps all that money the fans gave  improved/inspired this record more than it would have normally/been. Also the production; avoiding tambourine-toned compression on the splash and crash cymbals would be nice.

We are proud to announce the official release date of our new album will be October 29th. It's called "Volition" and contains a couple of blazin' bangers we hope some / most of you will enjoy! We will be peacing on a North American tour beginning of November which will be announced shortly. Stay tuned for tracklisting, artwork, and all that other crap bands usually release come album time.

The Dear Hunter - Shouting at the Rain (Video)

Nice video. For some reason, I thought I read from Casey or someone else with the band, the story/style/approach was inspired by Where the Wild Things Are . But I don't recall when that may have been, if it was. But the theme of this video does remind me of that story among others anyway.
There's a short interview as well here per mtv.com

3rd/New single "Primetime (ft Miguel)." Ballad. Not bad, but also not something I imagine will stand out on this record.

8/13/13 4:41PM

Wow, a double fucking album! I was a little wary about this record, and am still slightly compared to the ArchAndroid, but man, the way it looks both in concept/ambition and potential storytelling again, I'm now a little more optimistic about it.

According to NME, the Miguel track, "Prime Time," will feature a sample of the indie-rock godfathers, The Pixie's, classic "Where Is My Mind?"
We have a feeling this album is gunna push a lot of boundaries and bend a lot of genres. After all, this is the electric lady who adores talking about cyborgs almost as much as (and maybe more than) music!

This is apparently the cover art. I also noticed on Wikipedia, she is covering "I Want You Back" from the Jackson 5 as an exclusive bonus track with the Target store release.

New official video for "Dance Apocalyptic."

iTunes Preorder

no embed of course. I never get why it isn't embed-able since it'll probably be ripped onto Youtube within a few hours anyway.

Cool, catchy tune anyway. Can't wait to hear the whole thing in the coming months.

Stream "Dance Apocalyptic"

edit: the official video teaser below confirms the video for this song will be released on Tuesday July 2nd.

Instragram Video announcing this album is coming on September 10th, 2013

embed? I can't find it.

I can share what I have seen on Wikipedia

Prince and Miguel will be among the other guests, besides Erykah Badu on the 1st single.

Some song titles mentioned below:
-Q.U.E.E.N. (feat. Erykah Badu)
-Dorothy Dandridge Eyes
-Dance Apocalyptic
-Victory
-Primetime (feat. Miguel?)

Monáe's first single from The Electric Lady, "Q.U.E.E.N.", which features Erykah Badu, premiered on SoundCloud and made available for download purchase at the Itunes Store on April 23, 2013."Q.U.E.E.N" garnered 31,000 digital sales according to Nielsen Soundscan with the accompanying music video gaining four million Youtube views within its first week of release. Thematically, 'Electric Lady' will continue the utopian cyborg concepts of its predecessors, while presenting itself in more plainspoken, personal territory in addition to experimenting with genres beyond conventional Funk and Soul such as Jazz ("Dorothy Dandridge Eyes"), Pop-Punk ("Dance Apocalyptic"), Gospel ("Victory") and woozy, sensual vocal ballads ("Primetime", slated to be a duet with Miguel). The album will so far feature confirmed guest appearances by Prince and the aforementioned Miguel with production from previous collaborator Deep Cotton (a psychedelic punk act) and Roman GianArthur (a soul music composer), and is targeted for a September release date

11/5/12 1:45AM

In June 2012, Monáe performed two new songs, "Electric Lady" and "Dorothy Dandridge Eyes" — from her upcoming sophomore studio album, The Electric Lady — at Toronto's Jazz Festival.[24][25] In July 2012, for the second year in a row, she appeared at the renowned North Sea Jazz Festival in Europe as well as in the 46th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on the 14th.

Take the above source for what it's worth, being Wikipedia. Here's a couple of videos of the 2 songs mentioned about the album, live.

Certainly this album The Electric Lady, whenever it does come out (hopefully in 2013) is pretty high on my anticipation list. I doubt, but what if the name had some connection to either Jimi Hendrix or The Electric Ladyland studios.

Also a cool note I discovered over the weekend about Janelle in this link about Hidden songs the 8th track "Neon Gumbo" from The Archandroid (Suite II and III), when played backwards, sounds like a sequel to "Many Moons," from her debut EP Metropolis Suite I . "Many Moons" by the way, I have come to totally love, and find it as good if not better than anything off The Archandroid. There's even a cool short film/video of it.

The Crooked Fiddle Band - Moving Pieces of the Sea (2013)

released October 1st.. Rather odd, almost creepy cover. I honestly have not kept up with the details about this album until seeing some posts last week about this. Very cool this album comes out in less than 1 month!
Which hopefully will be at a point I will be listening to music at work more regularly, lol.
